50 Plays of Forest Shuffle…

…and my strategy has evolved from tree spam to something more consistently competitive!!

My journey with this game’s been a long one. At first I was sticking to a tree spam strategy, which did get me a good amount of wins in a row early on in September, but the more I played, the stronger my opponents got.

By late September and early October, I was forced to readjust my strategy—and I think I finally have. I’m synchronizing deer and trees with things like birds and hares + foxes. I’m winning about half the time again, and have scored a solid 22 wins at the game now. The highest I’ve ever scored was somewhere in the 300s. The highest I’ve ever seen has been 400s+.

I just need to test out if I can score that high again now that I’ve readjusted my strategies. My recent wins have been narrow ones and in the 100s-200s range. I’ve tested out hares + foxes and birds alongside trees and deer and their predators like I wanted, but now I’m curious about bats and butterflies. I wonder how high I can score while incorporating those. I wonder how far those can get me before I have to rely on deer and trees again.

It’s an engaging game, I’ll tell you that, and I like the theme of you building up a forest and adding other flora and fauna to your tree cards. I’m interested in playing this irl, but the game on BGA has spoiled me—it counts up your points for you, which I imagine gets a bit unruly irl just with how many points you end up having to tally at the end of the game!

Definitely can see myself playing this one a bunch more times, and maybe one day owning it. Who knows. It won’t release to retail as far as I know until November, so I have time to debate whether I want to own it sooner rather than later.

Highly recommend trying this one out on BGA. You won’t regret learning to play this game!

after 200 hours in the game here are my final opinions

What's up, fellow Sonic music enthusiasts! Shuffle is not a soundtrack we get to hear everyday, so let's pluck a tune and give it a listen!

This is another mellow track, and takes the forest theme quite seriously. It shares roots with the Mystic Ruins theme, with the drum tones and pan flute melody. We get a strange reverse drum beat in the middle that adds some tension and dissonance amongst the otherwise gentle track. We've got chorused guitars and related instruments in both ears, a simple, but evocative melody, and even some marimba slipped in there. I think the bridge/breakdown section might take this off the "easy listening" playlist for me, but it's definitely got some good ideas!

I got my oracle deck a bit ago but forgot to post a pic or 2 of them! (Also some ramblings under read more!)

Of course these 2 are my favorites but all the cards are so pretty :'3 I really love the little details in the cards, like on the satyr's art there's grapes, goblets, vines, and an aulos! And the satyr themself is so pretty :'3 I love this artist's style!

And Xenagos' art is just as pretty >:'3 I love his pose and the entire vibe of the art, it feels like this is deep in the forest in Skola Valley and it has a bit of an ominous but welcoming vibe, like you stumbled onto a revel wandering in the forest and he's welcoming you into the revel but! Watch out!

Also the card meaning for him "Breaking Free" is so fitting and I love it :'3 (and the satyr's "Trust Your Heart" is also just as lovely and fitting!!)

(Sorry the Nylea is a bit blurry :'v) I also love how the mono coloured god cards have stars and lines making them into constellations! And a personal bit I like specifically in Nylea's art is the forest in the background, she is the Goddess of nature but the forest for some reason in the background reminds me of my old childhood home a bit <:3 (when I was little we lived pretty much in the forest and the trees in the background remind me of when I'd look at the mountains and just see a sea of trees and green)

All the cards are super pretty and I love all the details in all of them uwu I'm honestly so happy I got to grab these cards :'3

Bit of a "going against the grain" warrior cats opinion here, but I actually like playing around with who goes to StarClan or the Dark Forest. Partly cause uhhh don't really like the ultra christianity here, don't really like discussing who "deserves" a peaceful afterlife. Especially since canon literally says that cats aren't allowed out of the Dark Forest once they're in.

But ignoring that and looking at the StarClan trials and who is allowed in StarClan, it's fun to pick out like. Where bias would come in, yeah, but just... what this society allows and just how unfair and cruel it can be. Like, they let Mudclaw in despite trying to assassinate Onestar... cause he was "just acting in the clan's best interest at the end of the day". He didn't TECHNICALLY break any rules since he failed to kill him, right? He just wanted to protect his borders. That's what a warrior is supposed to do!

Frecklewish, on the other hand, was unlucky enough to get StarClan's wrath. They wouldn't dare put a medic or a leader in there, not unless they were "born evil", despite doing worse than she did. They wanted at least one scapegoat for "letting Mapleshade loose". And her witnessing the kits' deaths was an easy excuse to lock her in the Dark Forest, putting all the guilt on her.

It's not black and white, "StarClan is good, Dark Forest is bad". In reality, both places are corrupt. They are tools used to control the warriors and play with fate.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 23rd July 2024.  As usual, we will start playing shorter games from 7.30pm as people arrive, until 8pm when we will start something a little longer.  The pub is doing food, and the table is booked from 6.30pm for those that would like to eat first.
