life update: finished my first week back at school and honestly it was okay. most of it was good except for my math teacher giving us three or four times the amount of work we had last year and my food tech class being the breeding ground for bullying. genuinely need to transfer out of food tech so i’ll try talk to my teacher next week. i started taking psychology this year and it’s been so fun so far. we’ve been talking about our brain preserving thoughts and stuff which is cool. as long as i can catch up in math and get out of food tech i think i will be okay.

So I listened to this (truly awful) song yesterday, where the chorus was 'I was never taught what laws there are!' and it detailed all the other things that the singer thinks they should have taught him in school, but now I keep thinking about shoddy, lacking elements of the school system here in Wales and one thing I keep going back to is food technology.
Food technology was taught from Year 7 onwards (11-12 years old). In my experience, the first year (at least) is spent following pretty simple recipes. You kind of move through making little rice krispie cakes, to making a Victoria sponge, and then a basic chicken curry. Despite the fact that you had to provide the ingredients yourself, which must have been rough on the kids with minimal financial resources or family support, it doesn't assume much prior knowledge as there are clearly written recipes and a teacher to help in the lesson.
My beef with it is, after a couple of years of this, it turns into a module about food marketing. I remember clearly spending a whole academic year looking at how brands market their product (not in a critical way, just in a 'how to' sense), picking a demographic, coming up with a slogan and packaging for a yoghurt, and not once making the yoghurt in question.
It really winds me up that there was this golden opportunity to teach kids some basic meals and they swapped it out for that bollocks. We could have talked about balanced diets, how to plan a week's shop, made some cheap and cheerful meals which are healthy and accessible enough to feed a family, how to cook rice, how to boil an egg, SOMETHING that would at least equip young people with the tools they need to feed themselves at home.
The food marketing shit did nothing. If we critiqued food labels and asked questions like 'hmmm, is this brand really as healthy as they say if their product is actually loaded with sugar? What makes something 'unhealthy' anyway?' that would be one thing, but no.
What was the point of that? I will add that this was all before GCSE so it's not like you are talking to kids who have an expressed interest in food. However, every single person in that room will need to eat.
Anyway, I'm really interested in what happens in other countries, and indeed whether the UK has bucked up a bit. Were you EVER taught how to cook ANYTHING while at school or was that left up to you to work out?
