and here we have some more black metal which I swear is something I'm not obsessed with and don't post about too much. this one's got an eastern esoteric sort of theme going on with a bit of instrumentals and melodies to match. links at bottom of post!

Winterfylleth album launch!
A couple of weeks ago I found out that Winterfylleth, a band I love, were doing an album launch party at a record shop about 20 miles from where I live. This shop is one of only a few in the UK that specialises in heavy metal, skewed towards the more extreme end of things. They also sell books, candles, and weird art. They're called Dark Earth Records and I'd highly recommend them to anyone in the Northwest of the UK who enjoys this kind of music.
I've never been to an event like this before, but it was really cool - three members of the band were there and I managed to chat with all of them and not say anything too dumb, and not only did I get their new album signed, but also the shop was selling their previous release on vinyl so I got that and got it signed too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, one guy did intentionally sign over his own face 😆
The reason why I only got the CD of the new one is because I already had the vinyl on pre order before I even found out about this event, and it hadn't been delivered yet so I couldn't take it with me.
Here's me standing in the shop with weird mutant baby artwork behind me.
Tumblr media
And my friend who went with me. She's not very familiar with the band, though their music was being played in the shop and she said she really likes it and will now definitely look them up. I bought her an early Behemoth record as its her birthday soon.

The three guys standing behind her are the band members!

𝖂𝖔𝖓𝖌𝖗𝖆𝖛𝖊𝖓 𝕱𝖏𝖊𝖑𝖑𝖙𝖗𝖔𝖓𝖊𝖓 26 𝖉𝖊 𝖏𝖚𝖓𝖎𝖔 𝖉𝖊 1995

Album Review: Panopticon - Kentucky (2012)
Panopticon is a band I've known for a long time but never gotten into. Coming from Kentucky, and later Minnesota, they play a very different style of folk-black metal than I'm used to, and as a Certified Appalachian Resident, I'm sick of bluegrass anyway and wanna hear some black metal! however, this album did the whole bluegrass/folk black metal thing very well, and it has super sick themes being based around coal miners.
Tumblr media
I wanna start by talking about the guitars. Guitar is the focus of the metal parts on this album, and they play some BLISTERING atmoblack riffs, kind of in the same vein as Drudkh but actually good. They simultaneously sound very melancholy, at times almost bittersweet, and epic and soaring. The riffing pulls me in hard, and the guitar tone is fantastic too. Very large and roomy, with a good amount of distortion. There are also some really cool solos and lead melodies, which is an impressive feat because VERY few black metal bands can pull that off.
Tumblr media
The bass is audible and at times plays melodies of its own, separate from the guitar. It adds worlds of depth and thickness to the sound of the album and is played so competently it makes me want to cry. Austin Lunn is a GOD on every instrument he plays here.
Tumblr media
The drumming is exceptional on this release. Pounding, driving beats give the black metal sections a LOT of energy, with good amounts of variation without sounding too chaotic. The drumming all feels intentional and inspired, not like they just decided "oh, lets play a blast beat the whole song" (though I do like when bands do that sometimes), it's a higher level of songwriting than on most black metal I enjoy. The drums also have a great mix, fitting in at a pretty perfect level, without overpowering anything or being drowned out.
Tumblr media
Speaking of which, the production on this album is FANTASTIC. I'm a raw black metal girlie, so most of what I listen to sounds like 2 dumpsters fucking in an alleyway while an industrial air conditioner hums away next to them and it's all being recorded on a nokia from 2001, but the production on this album, while incredibly clean and totally not "kvlt" at all, suits it perfectly. It still sounds raw and emotive, but it's crystal clear and lets you truly appreciate all of the genius instrumentation
Tumblr media
On a different note, the vocals are also fucking great here. Even the cleans! I usually can't stand clean vocals in black metal but they're great here! To be fair, it's largely because they're only really during the folk parts (with a couple exceptions) but even then. they sound great. During the black metal sections, Lunn is a BEAST, with some earsplitting, throat-shredding screeches full of emotion and passion. But during the folk sections, he nearly brings me to tears with bleak, sorrowful anticapitalist bluegrass dirges. The vocals and lyrics are perfect for the sound/feel of the album.
Tumblr media
Speaking of which, the atmosphere MAKES this album. It was so immersive that on my first listenthrough, I felt myself completely wrapped in the world Austin Lunn creates with this piece of art, embroiled in the lives of the coal miners. The music of the album already has the coal-mining, exploited worker atmosphere, but interspersing the music with speech clips about coal-mining drives it home even further. This album entrances you.
Tumblr media
Overall, this is a MASTERPIECE of atmospheric folk black metal. This is a deep and sorrowful work, played and written exceptionally well. This is lightning in a bottle. I will 100% be checking out more Panopticon.
10/10

Agalloch
Today is a good day. I was randomly searching up some bands on various social media, and discovered that one of my favourites of all time, Agalloch, who disbanded in 2016, reformed last year to play some live shows.
No doubt because of this they've also reissued a couple of old albums. I now have this gorgeous limited edition vinyl on preorder.
Tumblr media
As well as this shirt, and a patch for my jacket. Those lyrics on the back of the shirt 💜
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you've never listened to Agalloch before, I would highly recommend them. They kinda fall under the black metal umbrella, but not really, kinda fall under folk but not really, kinda under atmospheric/shoegaze but not really.
No-one else sounds like this, its just magical. Listen to them. This track may (arguably) be the best they've ever done.
