INCREDIBLE FLOOR

Daniel Ricciardo photographed at the wheel of a 1972 Alfa Romeo T33 at the Targa Florio | December 2014 | Jim Krantz
The Targa Florio, a legendary road race in Sicily that was first run in 1906, is renowned for its breathtakingly narrow roads winding through towns and mountains, making it both exhilarating and perilous. With his Sicilian heritage, Ricciardo embraced the challenge of racing the course in the very car that Helmut Marko once drove to set a lap record.

Daniel’s father talking about the Targa Florio and it’s connection with the Ricciardo family’s love for motorsport:
Joe was born in Sicily and credited the Italian island with planting the seeds of his family’s love affair with racing. “They used to have this huge race called the Targa Florio that was really big and famous from the 1920s right up to the mid-70s,” he said. “I was too young to remember but my dad tells me my grandfather used to put me on his shoulders and walk me down the hill to watch the cars as they came through. I think motorsport is in our DNA.”
+ Daniel on driving around his grandfather’s hometown:
“I would like to say … hey, I went racing around the streets where you [his grandfather] grew up. I passed your house, drifting … sideways, and I left some rubber just outside your front door.”

Born in 1889, Maria Antonietta Avanzo loved cars since she was a child, and after her divorce she was able to focus fully on racing. Living in Rome, Maria Antonietta had a long correspondence with Gabriele d'Annunzio and charmed the high society of the time - but most importantly, she raced. She wore her elegant clothes and high heels when racing, but she was a forced to be reckoned with, When the Automobile Club in Milan started to accept women, in 1920, she joined immediately and took part in several races in Italy and abroad. A fun episode happened during the Targa Florio in Sicily: a local mafia boss offered to protect her and she accepted, unfamiliar with what it entailed. And sure enough, the mafia men would bring herds of sheep and big rocks on the road to create obstacles for the other drivers to help her. She still had to retire due to a mechanical issue… caused by sabotage! Her teammate had replaced a carburettor of her Alfa ES Sport with a defective one, and there was nothing that she could do. For history's sake, the mafia boss didn't manage to get his hands on the infamous teammate, a young man named Enzo Ferrari. While traveling to Denmark, she watched a race around lake Garda - or rather, that was the original plan, as one of the teams found itself short of a driver. They initially refused her, saying that they "wanted all cars to reach the finish line", but had no choice to pick her. She would finish 7th overall, and 3rd in her cathegory behind Tazio Nuvolari, who struggled a lot against her. There are many interesting stories that could be told about her, but perhaps the most famous one is this: once when she raced in Denmark her car caught fire and she simply drove through the beach into the sea to quench the flames. Her passion for speed never stopped: when she was over 70, she would still drive at full throttle. At the question "how fast do you go?" she would reply "if my car can go at 180 km/h, then i go at 180 km/h." She died at 88, after having fought for women's right to race and having become a symbol of the feminist movement.

Porsche 718 RSK ‘Lucybelle III’
The Porsche 718 RSK had the difficult mission of replacing the legendary Spyder Type 550. It was more modern and aerodynamic than the 550, sported a new headlight design and was powered by a four-cylinder boxer engine that delivered 162 hp. The highlight of this car is that it debuted in 1958 at the 12 Hours of Sebring, winning in its category. He did the same at Le Mans. Although his most important achievement came in 1959, winning the Targa Florio, not only in his class but in the entire race.
The 718 RSK took the racing world by storm upon its introduction in 1958, immediately winning its class at the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Le Mans. What would really cement its legacy, though, was a 1-2-3 finish at the Targa Florio in Sicily the next year. This particular example was first bought by American race car drive and Le Mans winner Ed Hugus in 1959. He would paint it in the traditional American racing colors of white and blue, name it Lucybelle III after his business partner’s wife.

Starting at the Targa
Here is one of the favorites about to start the famous Targa Florio, this being the 44th Targa, in the town of Cerda in Sicily on May 8,1960. This car is a Maserati T61 entered by the American Camoradi USA team with full backing from Maserati, including their famed mechanic Guerino Bertocchi, which is to be driven by Umberto Maglioli (seen in the car here) and Targa specialist Nino Vaccarella.…

The Targa Florio was an open road endurance automobile race held in the mountains of Sicily, Italy near the island's capital of Palermo. Founded in 1906, it was the oldest sports car racing event, part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973.
