Listen listen. You’ve probably heard of Finduilas/Nienor and maybe you’ve heard of Nellas/Nienor. I’m proud to introduce Finduilas/Nienor/Nellas.
Timelines don’t matter when you have two immortal elves. They [spins wheel] save Elurín and Eluréd and raise them before [spins wheel] Finduilas becomes Gil-galad.
This is coherent and definitely not me throwing darts at a board labeled ‘fun silm AUs’

For the @silmarillionwritersguild Jubilee > Potluck Bingo > Elleth's Femslash & Lyrics board > column B, five exact drabbles. CW: possible incest (not explicit) + shamefully literal interpretation of prompts.
I've left signs but you take no notice
Míriel will not return, will not stand in the flesh before Indis again. Not to shame her, as her son is wont to do, for having taken her place in Finwë’s house; nor to speak her love.
Only the thousand treacheries of thread and fabric remain: a tear in Indis’s favourite gown, and the pricking of her needle against her thumb, the blooming of blood on linen, and a red blotch in the shape of Míriel’s profile; the sudden snagging of a ribbon around Indis’s wrist, tightening to a bond; the soft, caressing tangling of her sheets about her thighs.
Say that the wind won't change on us
Nienor climbs first, bare feet braced against the trunk, swift and bold, and Nellas climbs after her, eyes flitting ever upwards. Soon Nienor sits astride a bough, head drawn back in delight, braided hair gold against the grey sky. Wind blows, and leaves rustle loudly. Nienor draws Nellas to sit close beside her.
‘You must not forget this,’ says Nellas, leaning into her warmth.
‘O Elves whose memory is ever living!’ says Nienor, laughing. Pressing a kiss to Nellas’s mouth, she says: ‘But I shan’t.’
Perhaps not - and yet her brother did, thinks Nellas; and leaves scatter in the wind.
If I was Atlantis and you were the sea
She loathes it, loves it; then, at sixteen, she sees it for the first time.
It is wide, grey, bleak; some day all Númenor shall be hers, but not this. It comes lapping at her feet, a cold-tongued hound; she yells in affront, rips up a sheaf - sceptre, whip - of marram grass, lashes the sea. ‘Thief!’ Of a father’s presence, a mother’s happiness.
A wave comes, foam-tipped, and enfolds her. It is so cold she cannot breathe, then so warm between her legs she grows weak-kneed. In the water there is a woman’s face, grey-green, hair-wreathed; it laughs at her.
When we die we will die with our arms unbound
Another might have listened to the worm’s lies, gone hunting after phantoms.
But she is Húrin’s daughter, axe-wielding, a captain of Nargothrond. She runs back to where captives are being led away. Finduilas is among them, in chains; so she leaps, runs the harder.
They meet in the midst of battle. When they kiss, open-mouthed and harsh, their teeth clash and Nienor tastes blood - Finduilas’s, her own. It makes no difference; the Orcs are too many. Finduilas, now freed, hefts an Orkish spear; Nienor lifts her axe. They shall not live long now - but side by side, at the last.
Now three of us here lie
Summer, then autumn, falling to coldness all of a sudden, to frost upon the leaves and on the grass of a morning. To Aerin it feels too early still to light fires, a waste of wood. Instead the three of them share a bed, under heaps of blankets. They speak little; Morwen is ever more silent, and already Rían’s eyes stray ever northwards.
Still they draw together. Their hands entwine; sometimes their limbs. Morwen’s fingers are firm on Aerin’s wrist as she guides her down; Rían’s breath hot and damp against her neck. Stolen warmth, as an east wind blows.

I have very little interest in Túrin as a character, but I DO adore all the tragic women he interacted with and think they deserve sapphic happy ending fix-it AUs. So! You’ve heard of Finduilas/Nienor (excellent ship) and also of Morwen/Aerin (wonderful and heartbreaking ship) but may I please introduce you to my newest rarepair, Lalaith/Nellas?
“oh op Lalaith died when she was three—” shut up shut up shut up she’s alive to ME ok

Elements of Morgoth’s Curse on Húrin’s Family
There’s a lot of things going on in the Narn i Hîn Húrin, so I wanted to lay out what I think are the different elements of Morgoth’s curse. There’s a lot of aspects, from the things he does directly (send forces to capture Amon Rudh, send Glaurung to Nargothrond), supernatural bad luck (Túrin killing Beleg), and things that I read as more subtle negative influences.
First, I think the curse broadly influences both Túrin and everyone around him to be on their worst behaviour. It can’t make anyone do anything, it can’t override free will, but it can encourage bad behaviour and bad decisions. We’ve got one statement directly pointing to this, from Mablung to Saeros when the latter deliberately antagonizes Túrin and gets a jug thrown at his face for his trouble: “I think that some shadow of the North has reached out to touch us tonight. Take heed, lest you do the will of Morgoth in your pride, and remember than you are of the Eldar.”
My inclination is to think that Mablung has percieved correctly here, amd that Morgoth is doing everything he can to get Túrin out of Doriath, where Morgoth’s power to harm him is limited. This influence encourages Saeros’ hostility, Túrin’s revenge, and Túrin’s hasty decision to leave Doriath and refuse to explain his actions.
There are a lot of things that I read this way - Túrin’s stubbornness, his preying on civilians and travellers during his early days with the outlaws, the outlaws’ striking cruelty towards Beleg, Androg’s behaviour, Mîm’s resentments and later betrayal, Túrin’s arrogance and hostility towards dissent in Nargothrond, and even Morwen and Nienor’s determination to leave Doriath and go with the scouting mission to Nargothrond are all things chosen by the characters themselves, but in the above context it’s easy to suspect a subtle temptation underlying them. And the cruelty of the influence on the family of Húrin, in particular, is that the influence is driving, I think, a tragedy specifically directed at operating through hamartia - a virtue that becomes a vice in excess - to turn courage into recklessness and stubborn determination into obstinance.
Once Túrin leaves Doriath, the curse begins to work in some more direct ways. One subtle implication of the Narn is that Morgoth is clouding Túrin’s good memories of Doriath so that he will not return.
Coming suddenly out of his thought he said to Beleg: “The elf-maiden whom you named: I owe her well for her timely witness; yet I cannot recall her. Why did she watch my ways?”
Then Beleg looked stragely at him. “Why indeed?” he said. “Túrin, have you lived always with your heart and half your mind far away? You walked with Nellas in the woods of Doriath, when you were a boy.”
“That was long ago,” said Túrin. “Or so my childhood now seems, and a mist is over it - save the memory of my father’s house in Dor-lómin. But why should I have walked with an elf-maiden?”
A third way, and probably the most dramatic one, in which the curse works is as a very powerful bad-luck charm. Túrin accidentally killing Beleg, Túrin finding Nienor unconscious and naked on the burial mound of Finduilas, and possibly even the love triangle between Finduilas, Gwindor, and Túrin.
These three elements of the curse can operate whether Morgoth knows where Túrin is or not (the Narn does mention Morgoth loses track of him from time to time, until Túrin’s determination for open war periodically reveals him again).
And then the fourth element is Morgoth acting directly - sending forces after Túrin on Amon Rudh, sending Glaurung to Nargothrond, having Glauring hypnotize first Túrin and then Nienor, sending Glaurung to Brethil. I almost wonder if Morgoth at this point infuses some part of his spirit into Glaurung; prior to this the dragon seems like a large and dangerous, but basically animal-like monster, whereas in the Narn he’s intelligent, manipulative, and malicious.
And there are others things where it’s hard to tell what aspect of the curse is at work, but connections seem more than coincidental. Saeros taunt Túrin about the women of Dor-lómin “running like beasts clad only in their hair”; Nienor, enchanted by Glaurung, runs, “flying like a deer among the trees with her hair streaming in the wind of her speed” and tears off her clothing. Saeros leaps to his death at a chasm of a river; so, later, does Nienor (at Caben-en-Aras, the Deer’s Leap). The wording, the recurrence if the word ‘deer’, indicates that Tolkien intended us to make this connection, but what does that mean?
It seems to easy to claim that Morgoth had it all planned out from the start, from Saeros to Nienor; there are far too many twists and turns in Túrin’s story for it to seem plausible that Morgoth could orchestrate it that precisely, from start to finish. He’s got to be playing things by ear and adapting to circumstances at least a bit. But the Saeros parallel could suggest Morgoth had the general endgame (Túrin and Nienor marrying each other unknowingly) in mind from the start, and was waiting for the right moment when the family were in geographical proximity and outside the protection of Doriath.
EDIT: On the “painful dramatic ironies” front, I forgot to mention Túrin loving Finduilas ‘as a sister’ because she reminds him of the women of the House of Hador, and then falling in love with his actual sister in part because she connects with his memories of / guilt about Finduilas.

It would be very sad if I had to leave out one of my top ten.
This took forever!! Thank you for reading!
Bonus internet points will be awarded to anyone who actually tries this exercise before voting.
Assume you need to get the spelling at least somewhat close, and if a character has multiple names, only one counts. Also, if a character doesn't have a canonical name, I'm sorry, but "that guy's wife" doesn't count.
For reference, if you can name the 9 members of the Fellowship, the eponymous Hobbit and his 13 dwarf buddies, 3 prominent women, and the guy who runs the Rivendell B&B, that's 27 characters right there. And you probably also know the name of a dragon.
For further reference, Tolkien Gateway has 637 (!!) pages dedicated to Third Age characters. (Don't click that link until you've voted, of course)
Edit: Your humble pollmaker gave this a try, and got as far as 73 before deciding she was too tired to keep trying to remember dwarf and Silm names. If you also want to share (and don't mind people being incredulous at your having forgot ____), pastebin allows you to paste text and share it for free. :)

crocordile said to vinyatar: if i'm not too late! "I love you, they said. I love you" for anyone of húrin's family
i waffled over whom to draw from hurin’s family, settled on all of them, and ended up with this casually formatted photo set of turin being prepped for his dagorath duel by (most) everyone who loved him. waking up from the dead and then fighting morgoth takes a lot of encouragement

Note
I thought the point of Gwindor bringing up Finduilas as standing between Túrin and his doom was just that if Túrin marries Finduilas then he can't later marry Níniel, thus avoiding one of the worst results of the curse.
Possibly! But I think it's more than just avoiding the worst case scenario, I think it's actively the best case scenario
The reason I'm so very attached to it is specifically this
‘A Man you seem in stature, and indeed more than many already,’ Thingol answered; ‘but nonetheless you have not come to the fullness of your manhood that shall be. Until that is achieved, you should be patient, testing and training your strength. Then, maybe, you can remember your kin; but there is little hope that one Man alone can do more against the Dark Lord than to aid the Elf-lords in their defence, as long as that may last.’
Then Túrin said: ‘Beren my kinsman did more.’ ‘Beren, and Lúthien,’ said Melian. ‘But you are over-bold to speak so to the father of Lúthien. Not so high is your destiny, I think, Túrin son of Morwen, though greatness is in you, and your fate is twined with that of the Elven-folk, for good or for ill. Beware of yourself, lest it be ill.’
Nellas and Finduilas also both remark on the similarities between Turin and Beren, with Nellas saying not everybody would be able to see it. Which makes me think Finduilas is genuinely onto something, rather than just... wishfully thinking of a man who married an elf.
Anyway, before Luthien, Beren is fighting Morgoth in a way not too dissimilar to Turin. Besides, in terms of inheriting broken houses, Beren and Turin are pretty much the same, though of course with the houses of Beor and Hador respectively. There's a parallel there.
Now, I'm not suggesting Turin would personally walk into Angband and live, and Melian straight up says that's not his fate, but I do think he might've been able to accomplish more if he had Finduilas. Of course, Finduilas isn't half-Maia either, so there's also that to account for. But in my mind (and I'm fully aware that I may be wrong) there seems to be something going on here beyond just making Turin unavailable for Nienor.
Now, I don't actually like Turin and Finduilas marrying, because I much prefer them as friends, but historically, men who marry up in Tolkien (assuming Finduilas counts as "up" which Tolkien would probably say she does) tend to have a better shot at life than even men who marry non-sister wives of the save social standing.
I think Turin's fate as it is is twined with that of the Elven-folk very much for ill, but perhaps the thing Tolkien might've been trying to get at is that if he married Finduilas, it'd be for good. How? I don't know. Like I said, it doesn't even appeal to me (give me BROTPs or give me death), but if I'm just following the patterns Tolkien's stories seem to follow, that does seem to be a strong possibility? Maybe even just... Continuing the Hadorian bloodline, Peredhel version, which of course Tuor also does, but maybe since the Hadorians are the First House they're supposed to have more Peredhil than the Beorians? Or maybe it's about having Arafinwean Peredhil running around? I don't know, but it feels significant (but full disclaimer, I haven't read this book in a decade, so I'm going off my impressions from when I'd read it, so I may be saying nonsense here)

It’s soothing to organize fic ideas for public eyes, so here’s a list of mine in order of imminence of publication/completeness-of-ideas:
MDZS/CQL
In Progress:
Wen Qing/Li Xiaofan, for Novy
Future Ambitions:
Implied NHS/JGY, Terrible Threesome, from LXC’s POV - messy aftermath of NMJ’s death
WWX/MXY shared consciousness incense burner-induced dreamscape sex
Commentary on WWX’s derealization, in dialogue with LWJ
Wangxian kink, LWJ POV, LWJ’s stone-related insecurites (possibly will overlap with the previous point in a general “post-canon wangxian feeling their way with each other”)
Vaguely Formed Free-Floating Ideas:
WWX/NHS post-canon in Qinghe, antagonistic flirting
WWX teaching in Lotus Pier, sexy Wangxian epistolary exchange
Some sort of take on JGY/QS
SQX/HX dark dubcon captivity fic (because this ship needs more nastiness)
SILM
In Progress:
Finrod/Curufin and possessive gift giving
Nienor fic (feat. interaction with Aerin and Nellas)
Future Ambitions:
Nienor/Finduilas AU, possibly with a side of Nienor/Brandir - everyone in Brethil

003 | Túrin??
Thank you anon!
How I feel about this character: God. On the one hand: he’s an idiot. On the other hand, the odds were stacked against him and arguably he was cursed to always make the Worst Possible Decisions. I’m especially attached to the description in Children of Hurin as Turin as a smol child, partly I guess because it reminds me a lot of myself? I love how sincere he was and how much he loved his baby sister and aaaaa. I wish Turin had listened to his boyfriend more but I guess he was metaphysically compelled to Not do that
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Beleg, Mim, Gwindor, Finduilas, Celebrimbor... that’s everyone I can think of who I ship with him in a Nice way.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Turin+Nellas friendship is really cute ALSO TURIN+SADOR OH NO.... oh no so cute...
Oh and of course there’s Turin and Nienor. Which. I would love the way she was calmer and happier around him if it had STAYED PLATONIC but of course that’s the whole tragic point.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t know that I have any!
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: gee idk I sure wish he HADNT MARRIED HIS SISTER
my het ship: Turin/Finduilas I guess? I’m not super passionate about this but it is a het ship which is more than I’m usually able to come up with lmao
my fem/slash ship: all... the other ships? Honestly it’s a funny thing about this ask meme that it has you list all the people you ship with the character and then later has you pick out One (1) Het Ship and One (1) Slash Ship, like... why.
my OTP: Turin/Beleg!
my OT3: Turin/Beleg/Gwindor, or Turin/Gwindor/Finduilas, or Turin/Beleg/Mim in a Happy Mim AU.... polyamory is great
my cross over ship: I’m really bad at having crossover ships sorryy
my kink: things-other-than-sibling-incest
a head cannon fact: he was pretty well versed in Doriath Politics and elfbusiness, being Thingol’s sort-of adopted son and everything
my gender bend: fem!turin has a scruffy ponytail and it’s very cute
Thanks again!! I hope this was satisfactory!

If someone's already asked you for the silm, and if it's not redundant, children of húrin? :)
the character I least understand: PROBS TÚRIN despite having thought about him a lot. ‘understand’ might not be the word, it’s more like even with a basic grasp of his mindset, a lot of it feels foreign to me.
interactions I enjoyed the most: morwen and hurin chatting about in-laws, hurin and morgoth also chatting about in-laws, turin collating a single conversation together from morwen and sador’s non-answers, turin talking to nellas while under the impression she is his imaginary friend, NELLAS AND THINGOL AT TURIN’S TRIAL, mim and turin with: fun third wheel: mim’s son’s ghost, beleg showing up looking like a fat huggable polar bear idk, turin killing beleg and gwindor’s reaction shot, GWINDOR LEADING TURIN TO IVRIN, gwindor yelling at orodreth, finduilas thinking “But Turin was not like Beren!” while staring at turin, gwindor yelling at turin while dying—‘for ill though my life was, you have brought death to me with your violence.’ + ‘patience will break at the last’—nienor vs morwen round 1, nienor vs glaurung round 1, nienor’s insensate husk vs mablung round 1, niniel vs brandir round 1, hunthor/dorlas/turin extremely brief roadtrip, niniel vs brandir round 2, NIENOR VS GLAURUNG ROUND 2. everything from when turin wakes up to his death? is that an interaction? a chemical interaction. MORWEN AND HURIN CHATTING ABOUT IN-LAWS (their son and their daughter are also their son-in-law and their daughter-in-law)
the character who scares me the most: ….turin… lovingly daunted
the character who is mostly like me: hmm, in a weird way i feel like this is hurin although i have no defense for it
hottest looks character: nienor or oldwen, regular morwen is the love of my life but oldwen is 👌👀🔥
one thing I dislike about my fave character: uhhhh fuck, who even is it. hurin: i hate that he kills mim.
one thing I like about my hated character: morgoth has some great lines and also i like how calmly he delivers his flat comebacks, like a five year old. “You lie” / “You shall see and you shall confess that I do not lie.” thanks morgs
a quote or scene that haunts me: “Farewell, O twice beloved! A Turin Turambar turun’ ambartanen: master of doom by doom mastered! O happy to be dead!”
a death that left me indifferent: androg
a character I wish died but didn’t: WHO IS EVEN LEFT
my ship that never sailed: ‘finduilas and gwindor escape the fall of nargothrond together a la merry and pippin, date treebeard’

y'know i've been thinking about this and i think
jason blossom = saeros (first death, big sad)
cheryl blossom = nellas (goes a little coocoo bananas due to jason/saeros' death)
toni topaz = nienor (unfortunate kiss w/ jughead/túrin but she's dating cheryl/nellas now so it's fine now i guess)
jughead = túrin (connected to jason/saeros' death tangentially (accident by túrin, fp for jughead); big emo, dAmAgEd, joins a gang, eventually leads the gang, only wears black/grey)
betty = beleg (runs away from Good Girl™ status to support jughead/túrin, hAs A dArK sIdE (i JuSt MiGhT hAvE tO pUnIsH yOu vs like being a feared warrior who kills orcs regularly idk. also the serpent queen is a warrior queen so))
archie = finduilas (Nice Guy™ energy, cinnamon roll, leadership qualities, idk finduilas can probably play guitar if she wants, big bff energy w/ jughead/túrin, F I N N I E K I N S)
fred andrews = orodreth (Nice Guy™ except orodreth is useless and freddiekins is not)
veronica = gwindor (used to be a pawn of hiram/morgoth but is getting their shit together for archie/finduilas)
reggie = brandir (just kinda there to be shoved around, kinda sad, doing his best)
hiram lodge = morgoth (evil)
black hood = glaurung (serial killer, homewrecker, nice)
or honestly maybe kevin=finduilas bc sheriff keller was actually useless/incompetent lol 😜☕ and that's the tea sis!!! also I'm only 4 episodes into s3 so this might be off lol
Túrin is Jughead, the Gaurwaith are the Southside Serpents, and Beleg is Betty. fuck
