In the thematic logic of the story, Silver’s position in the forest is not Flint post-Thomas (raging and weeping), and its not Flint post-Miranda (ruined) he’s something similar to but also quite different from McGraw in London. McGraw and Silver (+ some other characters, notably Max) have in common an obviously learned & persistent cynicism about the world, but it seems (or its implied, wrt Silver) that they didn’t arrive at that way of seeing in the same way. I think Flint has largely moved through and out of that cynicism by S4; he still wields it tactically against the Empire (its vital in that sense) but he does not (or at least tries not to, at Madi’s urging as well) direct it towards his allies. Silver is stuck in that cynicism. Whether permanently, by design, or owing in part to the timeline of the story (“Do you really imagine a few weeks of this will make much of a difference? Am I not what I am at this point?”). He can’t be talked out of it or loved out of it or seen through it. Really the forest scene is somewhat akin to McGraw pulling a gun on an amaglamation of Thomas and Miranda (Madi is off screen, but he is pulling a gun on her too. And himself). Hey isn’t it funny Silver accuses Flint of killing everyone he loves through his proximity to them. Imagine if Flint actually pulled a gun on them. Ridiculous show.

It is this quality of being multinamed and nameless that enables him to survive. By contrast, almost all the warriors of The Iliad yearn to have a name and a story that lasts forever. Their many names and titles, as sons and brothers and comrades and fathers and rulers, are essential to their identities, their connections with one another, and their fame after death. They fear, above all, being humiliated (cursed with a negative name), or forgotten and nameless. The lists and catalogs of names are essential to the poem’s own work, of memorializing and mourning the dead. Once the bodies return to dust, these syllables are all that remain.

Billy is more sympathetic when you connect the fact that Flint “took” his surrogate father from him, with Flint “taking” Silver from him (literally overnight), with Silver “taking” the rest of his brothers from him and essentially booting him from the house (even though Silver asks him to come back after the beating. Lol.). Abandoned bitch. His siblings said “This guy has bad vibes I think? Dadmombossking eldritch horror said so. He should go to hell.” And they were right in a way. He did have bad vibes. He is going to hell. But I guess this is what happens when one can’t figure out that gay people are real in time. And that leaving Silver alone with Flint for an hour let alone for months while imbuing Silver’s name with mythic ur-pirate powers just to provide a counterweight to Flint’s gay tyrant hegemony was a catastrophic mistake with no way back. Billy being one of the only prominent characters in the show without a romantic/sexual relationship also comes across as a choice in light of this (not saying it was.) Brotherbestie was being seduced from 303 onwards and Billy got no clue wotss going on. He can perceive Silver and Madi’s relationship just fine it seems but Flint is out of the question to him as someone Silver could possibly grow to love. In part because Flint is the father-killer as far as Billy is concerned. But Silver apparently loves father-killers when the father in question is Empire. Wow is that a type or something?
