how they glitter in the sky
There’s only so much emotion anyone can fit in their bodies before they burst or spill or fall apart, dissolve in a flood of feelings they can’t control. Felix refuses to lose himself to his traitorous heart: at eight years old, he’s too old to miss his mama the way that he does. Too bad he can’t help it.
He climbs onto the bus with a scowl and a friend he doesn’t want, and the wheels of the bus spin forward. Luckily for Felix, do the wheels of fate and time.
Happy @felixmonth, y’all!
The biggest travesty of the day was that it was sunny. Where was the rain when he needed it?! Maybe then the buses would’ve been late, or canceled if the rain was bad enough, and he wouldn’t be forced to go to this stupid summer camp, like some sort of recalcitrant child. Which he wasn’t, obviously.
If Felix was being honest, the real travesty was the way his mama drove off after dropping him off at the curb, like saying a proper goodbye the way the parents were doing would be wasted on him. The real travesty was the way he stood off to the side with bags he could barely wield and no one to hug before leaving for the whole summer, only to start third grade immediately after coming back. The real travesty was moving from London a week ago and then immediately getting shipped off to summer camp like everything was okay and normal, like he wouldn’t miss London worse when he didn’t even have his mama to make him feel like home.
Fine. Whatever. Felix could sulk just fine in the sun, anyways.
Felix clambered onto the sturdier of his two bags and settled in for a good pout, finding a comfortable scowl and slouching in that sweet, satisfying kind of way. It almost made him feel okay about being there. This was comfortable, familiar. Safe. A kind of uninterruptible alone that he could handle.
“Hi!!! I’m Marinette, what’s your name?!”
Felix almost fell off his luggage.
Specifically, he tilted back, windmilling his arms wildly and kicking his feet out in an attempt to stay upright before this girl all decked out in pink grabbed his hand and pulled him forward. Felix wanted to be angry at that too, the way she handled his weight so effortlessly, and for a moment he started wrestling his anger into submission before realizing his mama wasn’t around to stop him. So instead he leaned into the anger, deepening his scowl, glaring at the girl instead of answering.
“Um, I’m… this is my first year at camp! I’m… I don’t know anyone else going, so… do you want to be friends? You seem new to the area, I’ve never seen you before! Did you just move here? Where’d you move from? Moving seems pretty cool. I’d like to see the world, y’know? Um. Sorry, what’s your name again?”
“No.” Felix was almost excited to try out the new growl-grumble combo he’d been practicing. It seemed to be less effective than he had hoped, though. All he got was wide eyes and a barely-there flinch before this Marinette girl barrelled on.
“Um, no? What do you mean no?”
“I don’t want to be your friend.”
“...oh.” She managed to pause for a whole second, which Felix found impressive at this point. “Do you… still want to sit together? We don’t have to be friends if you don’t want. We can just sit together! I’ll even be quiet, I promise.” At that, she grinned widely, enough for Felix to see her gap teeth. In a valiant attempt to avoid getting flustered, he grabbed his bags and pushed past her.
Or rather, tried to. He’d forgotten how unwieldy they were and his mama wasn’t around to help anymore. Crud! His dramatic exit was ruined.
...oh no. Worse, it was co-opted!! Marinette had grabbed one of his bags (the bigger one, he noted), and was deftly maneuvering it behind him like it was no trouble. She grinned at him again, softer this time but no less genuine, almost shy with the way she ducked behind her bangs.
Right when Felix was contemplating smiling back (or at least dropping his scowl), a cheery counselor bounced up in front of the group of kids clustered around their parents’ legs and started calling names. Apparently, seats were assigned. Of course they were. And of course Felix was stuck in the back, right next to this girl.
“Looks like we ended up sitting together anyways! That’s a pretty funny coincidence, huh! I’m sorry if I’ve been talking too much. You seem like a pretty quiet person, so maybe we can just sit here together and watch the scenery?” Felix wasn’t the brightest at reading emotion, but even he could tell that her smile was getting strained, like holding it up without any support was starting to weigh on her. He wanted to feel bad, or to apologize, but he was so tired. Felix was so done with feeling guilty, and apologizing, and trying to shove his anger into a box to keep himself public-appropriate. No one here was going to tell him he had to be good. No one here could. If his mama didn’t care enough to stick around long enough to tell him how to behave, no one else did, and no one else could make him.
So instead he darkened his glare and crossed his arms, and let all the rage from the last few months bleed into his scowl.
“I don’t want to do anything with you.”
Marinette flinched back, smile slipping off her features. Felix could see her heart sinking in her eyes and resolutely pushed any residual guilt away.
He refused to acknowledge the part of him hoping desperately that she’d keep trying anyways. He refused to acknowledge the dagger in his gut when she didn’t.
She turned away from him to face the window, pulling her legs up onto the seat and curling them under her dress, with just the tips of her stockings peeking out from the skirt of her dress. She watched the city lights glitter on the horizon as they drove further away, watched sunlight filter through treetops and catch on pollen like fairies dancing as the forest got thicker. She didn’t look back at him the whole bus ride there.
Halfway through the trip, the effort of keeping his anger alive finally chewed through the little energy Felix had left and he nodded off. It wasn’t until the bus slowed and the chatter of children rose to a raucous roar that he blinked awake and realized what had happened.
He had fallen asleep on her shoulder.
...and she hadn’t said a word.
Felix hated to admit it but it was the best sleep he’d gotten since he first learned about the move. It felt like the rest was a balm over his anger and pain and hurt, like he was finally able to let it all go and exist in the world around him for once instead of being lashed against the walls of his own mind.
Noticing that he was awake, Marinette slipped off the seat and made her way to the front of the bus, pausing when he hadn’t even moved yet.
“...it’s fine if you don’t want to be my friend, Felix. I’m sorry I pushed you so much. I just… thought it would be… nice. For once…” She trailed off, and then shook herself back to her train of thought. “For what it’s worth, if you still want, I’m happy to be your friend whenever you’re ready. If you ever want to be, I mean.”

Felinette Month 2020 - Day 5: Shenanigans
Time for another of the great @felinettenovember prompts! This one took most of my spare time from work, so hopefully I can pound out the day 6 prompt quicker and finish a few more tonight!
Approximately 1300 words
Felix starting at school instead of Adrien but he’s somewhere in between their personalities here. Marinette has the best kind of ally <3
When Felix Agreste started at Francoise Dupont, Chloe tried to buddy up with him, despite the two being rivals in their personal lives. Felix believed Chloe was a spoiled brat and Chloe was convinced that he was a pompous moron. However Chloe knew that being on his bad side at school would result in her own misery. Her belief that their relationship could be compartmentalized and no feelings from the other areas would seep in was ultimately her school undoing.
Marinette noticed the whispers and bowed heads when shuffling into class that first day. Usually they would stick to themselves, leaving her to Chloe, as the favorite victim. Today was different. A few of the students started waving her over and opened their huddle slightly to grant her entrance.
"What's going on?" Marinette hesitantly asked.
"Chloe’s with a new boy today!" Mylene quickly told her.
"He was wearing a vest! What a loser!" Kim chortled. Alex high five him.
"Do you think he's going to be just as bad as her?" Marinette’s heart sank. Another new bully and she stopped fully listening.
"He looks like that fashion model that's all over!"
"Oh! The Ice King! Yeah!"
"Do you think they're dating?" Rose, always thinking of love. Marinette almost felt like smiling at her comment. If only this was a group of friends talking about another starting to date, rather than her tormentor teaming up with another one.
"Well she was hanging off his arm!"
Marinette just mumbled that they'd have to wait and see before turning to walk back to her usual seat. An unknown girl was standing at the front near Bustier’s desk, surveying the classroom and its occupants. Marinette gave a weak smile and moved to sit down but the girl stopped her as she was about to sit.
"Oh girl! Don't sit there. It looks like someone stuck some gum on the bench and it'd suck if you ruined your outfit!" Marinette’s breath hitched. She hadn't realized how tense she was in anticipation of the day.
"Thanks… um--"
"Alya" she supplied with an extended hand and a genuine smile.
"Thanks Alya," Marinette felt herself unwinding slightly and smiled as she accepted the hand shake. Maybe she would have a new friend! As long as Chloe doesn't force her away too… The pair quickly looked around to find something to pry the gum off, after Marinette insisted she sits there every year. Just as they were bending down to take it off, a hand clamped on Marinette’s shoulder, staying her hand.
"What are you doing?" a blond boy hissed near her ear as Marinette jolted then whirled around, nearly falling back onto the gum. In the same moment, Alya's eyes shot up, sending daggers his way as she straightened from her leaned position dabbing water onto the gum in hopes of rehydrating it and loosening the dried grip on the seat.
"This is my seat!" Marinette bit back and then, after a quick study of the boy in front of her, narrowed her eyes. "You and Chloe planned this didn't you?" Her index finger shot out to poke his shoulder to emphasize the you's, all while leaning forward with the other hand planted firmly on her hip. He raised an eyebrow but otherwise kept the same mildly annoyed expression and didn't move away as she invaded his space.
"Accusing someone without any evidence. Very childish. I would never willingly cooperate with a spoiled brat like her, for your information. Actually, I was under the impression that this seat was the witch's," Felix tilted his head and raised the other eyebrow in a manner that declared the ball was in her court.
Marinette nearly hissed back that he was wrong. Then she took a deep breath and stepped back to gain composure again. Turning back to continue clearing the gum, she spoke as gently as she could manage in her aggravation, "It isn't and now you know."
"It is good to know. Thank you for the information," Felix had a shadow of a smile at his perceived victory, before turning towards the front and schooling his face into a smug smile instead. He sat at the seat directly in front of Marinette’s, back straight as a board, and waited for classes to begin. The gum was successfully removed and nobody in the class admitted to knowing who put it there. Felix’s proclaimed dislike of Chloe did little to sway most of the class, though Nino attempted to strike up conversation with him and was dismissed quickly. Instead of leaving entirely, Nino leaned on the desk Marinette and Alya claimed and started chatting with them.
Chloe entered with a swift and dramatic strut, bringing a hush over the room all while making a show of fawning over the boy, Felix as Marinette learned. He ignored her with an expression somewhere between distaste and indifference, much to the confusion of those that were still convinced the two were a couple.
She tried to make a fuss about sitting together but Felix rejected the offer saying that his new friend ("shoot what was his name") already claimed that seat. With an sly smile he informed her that she'd have to settle for sitting somewhere else, perhaps she'd like to sit across the aisle from him? Instead of simply accepting, Chloe warily had Sabrina sit there first to ensure it was comfortable enough for her, eying Felix the entire time. Satisfied when nothing happened, she accepted his suggestion.
Classes proceeded smoothly until lunch. As Chloe got up to leave, Felix managed to snag her purse strap on the edge of a desk, causing it to tip upside down. Chloe shrieked at Sabrina to pick up her stuff and threw a fit about the state of her possessions. Felix quickly ducked out of his chair to help Sabrina pack each item back into Chloe's purse, however in the class' shock, they missed him switch her powder foundation with one from his pocket. With the mess quickly cleared, the students put the strangeness of Felix’s behavior out of mind and went to lunch.
The small incident was forgotten until midway through the afternoon. Chloe had decided it was time to start her usual mocking of Dupain-Cheng and pulled out her foundation to touch up her nose for dramatic effect. As she was not paying her usual attention to the makeup itself, she missed the extremely bright coral tone, rather than her usual light tan powder, and proceeded to pat it into her face. Felix bit back a smile and stared at her with mock concern. Nino was the first to laugh while everyone else watched with a mixture of awe and confusion. Chloe's head snapped towards him, giving the others a clearer view of her makeup mishap. Slowly the rest of the class started to laugh, Chloe's head whipping between them as she insisted they stop. Bustier tried to quiet them to no avail. Felix just sat back and enjoyed the chaos. Marinette noticed his reaction (or lack thereof), and tried to catch his attention with a light tap on his seat using her foot. He turned halfway in his seat and looked at her from the corner of his eye. She mouthed "you?" and he gave the smallest shrug. She shook her head a little and looked away with a small smile and flush to her cheeks.
Every prank Felix pulled over the weeks was harmless and directed only at Chloe, with the exception of Marinette’s birthday, when a confetti gun was rigged to go off above her seat when someone sat down. Marinette’s personal favorite was the glitter bomb in Chloe's locker, though she wouldn't admit to any previous knowledge. Maybe she just liked the Cheshire Cat grin Felix wore when he caught her glancing at him afterwards.

Felix July Prompts 2020
Felix Month prompts for this July 2020 are finally settled and ready to be released! Below is the list of prompts by day: we decided to release the list before the calendar is ready to maximize time for creators to prepare.
You’ll notice that the prompts are organized by Weekly Themes, which is a new addition to this year. All the prompts for that week are related to the theme and the moderators of Felix Month made an effort to create prompts that either told a story across the week or lead easily into each other. We’re hoping that having weekly themes helps take the pressure off for any creators who don’t feel up to doing 31 daily prompts-- while you might choose to just fill your favorite prompts, you can also choose to write stories based on the 4 weekly themes, and we’re hoping that gives everyone more options to choose from. Please don’t feel beholden to the weekly theme!! If a prompt takes you in a different direction, we’d love to see where your muse takes you!!
With no further ado, the prompts!!!

100 follower special event✨✨
Tumblr media
Hello babies🌸🌸( tis the name I have dubbed thee)!
First and foremost I would like to thank you for liking my content enough to actually follow, let alone having me reach 100 followers. I hope you keep enjoying my content in the future and keep on supporting me. I make it my mission to make sure that everyone reading my work feels loved, included and happy. That is one of the main reasons I always try to write gender neutral stories and refrain from describing physical features unless requested. I hope that in the future I am able to write for female characters as well to broaden my demographic. I hope you know that I love each an every one of guys very much.
This is the post for my 100 follower special. It took some time to figure out exactly what I wanted to do since I really wanted to something special for you all. I hope you guys enjoy this special event and bear with me since this is my first time doing this. When the event is over I’ll upload a google form that I’d appreciate if you filled out so that I know what to change when I hopefully hit another milestone.
The event will be held from the day this is posted and will continue for the whole month. Which means 4th - 31st August 2020 according to the CEST time zone. I will no longer take request starting from 11:30 pm on the 31st, seeing as I most likely won’t be able to produce something I’m proud of while on a time crunch. I probably will close it early if there aren’t that many requests since I start school in a week and have many important exams. That’s why my requests are currently closed. Everything that has to do with the special will be tagged with #100 special. My guidelines still apply during the event.
If you would like to be added to a taglist for a specific group, person, anime, character, for questions only, prompts only or everything just send me an ask or a dm :)
BTW I started writing this post at like 5:30 pm and finished at 2:12 am. ngl I wasn’t writing between 8 and 10 pm since I was busy helping my parents. That’s still a long time tho...
When the event is done:
I will link this in my masterlist.
Every prompt that is written will have a list of names next to it. Every name will be a link to the post.
I will edit the layout of this post so that my legend, that I add to every masterlist to symbolize what kind of post it is, will be there.

A YEAR IN REVIEW: 2019.
Tumblr media
Oh wow it’s two hours to midnight. I’m about to enter my fifteenth year of existence and second decade turn I’ve been alive to witness. Guess it’s time for my first annual year in review of fanfiction <3
WORD COUNT:
This year in total I wrote 150,065 words! Not even including the fanfictions I wrote for other fandoms throughout the year. This was all in a few months too. Damn, can’t wait to see where 2020 takes me if this is my writing prowess now.
The Breakdown:
Bloodlines took the cake at 71,593 words. Makes sense, I wrote that first and actually had it going a bit before I got the idea for Shadow of the Sith. It’s not obsolete just yet, but is currently on hiatus. Still one of my most written for projects. Means I’d been working on that since August. Startinglingly, the latest chapter was in October. That means that whole endeavor took two months to write 71.5k.
Shadow of the Sith is close behind at 47,995 words. With how I went from writing 2k word chapters to the latest being 7k words, it’s valid how the number jumps so much chapter-to-chapter. This one I’ve been working on since early November, and the most recent one was added today. That’s a month and some days worth of writing 48k words guys :0.
The Heritage prompts roll in at 15,657 words. I posted rather sporadically for this because most ended up being abandoned oneshots while I worked on Bloodlines and later, Shadow of the Sith. Still, it’s nothing to sneeze at and I’m rather proud of the work I put in.
The Made of Star Dust universe is at a haughty 11,777. Given this was written long before I’d even gotten the privelege to play Shadow of Revan, so some stuff is inaccurate but other than that a very ambitious project that I intend to pick up at some point. For now, it remains on hiatus.
The oneshots round us out at 3,043. This includes Hierarchy for the time being because it consists of a Khaak/Lana oneshot and that’s it. Not disappointed here, and I’m rather happy it even reached that.
NEW THINGS I TRIED.
I tried Star Wars the Old Republic out again, and obviously I flourished here. The community is so kind and compassionate, not to mention inspiring. I tried out the Jedi Consular storyline, fell asleep halfway through, and then my Consular was the Barsen’thor.
Oh you mean writing wise.
I definitely extended my writing. My word counts shot up this year from 500 words in 2018 to 8k words just a week or so ago. I’ve improved my storytelling to include characters and personalities I’ve never encompassed before. Took my hand at writing more romance, and successfully.
I visited the TrollHunters fandom for a period of time and rather enjoyed it, I have one 8k fic going on it’s fourth month on hiatus on my AO3 page. I joined my first actual hate for a show and that materialized in Voltron: Legendary Defender.
I joined AO3. Didn’t find immediate success but I found some of my favorite authors there. My account is here: euphoria_starrs.
I joined tumblr for the first time. Had never experienced it before but now it’s my main media. Other than the problematic side of tumblr, I like the people here.
FAVORITE THING I WROTE THIS YEAR.
Definitely Shadow of the Sith. I accomplished so much with it already and it’s not even near done but people enjoy it, and it’s been one of the biggest succesful endeavors I’ve ever done. Thanks for taking time to read it guys <3
FAVORITE FIC I READ THIS YEAR.
*Takes a deep breath* Well here we go I guess.
@cavalier-life‘s Collateral Damages. It’s so artfully written, and for a ship I definitely didn’t think I’d grow to love as much as I do now. The characterization is beautiful, and the conflicts are real and believable. I adore Selirah with my whole heart, thank so much for writing it! Have definitely binged chapters repeatedly until the words are swimming on the page at two in the morning.
@cinlat‘s...whole library. Particularily Howl In the Night (I intend to get to reading Heart on a Trigger, just haven’t had the time yet) because of the untouched territory it delves into. I love the way you handled the story, and it’s truly heartbreaking at the end. Your oneshots are to die for as well. But Our Own pulled at my heartstrings. I’d lie if I didn’t say I was rooting for Nahir the whole time.
@melissagt‘s Not Afraid Anymore. I think I already commented on it but I’ll do it again. Yet another ship I didn’t think I’d sail but as I got deeper and deeper into Andronikos, Theron and Lelu’s relationship I just let the sail go. I love the story and how they get accustomed to each other and just how gritty it is. I definitely stayed up late at night to finish reading it.
@lumielles‘s Guilt By Association, Outlander Day and Need a Minute. I haven’t had the time to read much more of Idan’s story, but Aramys and Theron break my heart with every oneshot and story of yours I read. I love it because it’s so tasteful, and absolutely bittersweet at the best of times. I look forward to learning more about this family :)
@greencrusader13‘s All Were Innocent Once. I adore this story because it was one of the first ones I read in the fandom, and it was beautiful. Cirak and Tyar are such three-dimensional characters, and I can’t wait to learn more about the others present.
Any others I found but for those who don’t have tumblr accounts can be found on my Fic Recs Page. Flirting With Desire (Sirius Ordo), and Someone To Fight For (Bamfbugboy) always tear at my heartstrings whenever I read them. If ya’ll like to cry, here they are.
WRITING GOALS FOR 2020.
1. Definitely finish Shadow of the Sith. Mellena and Theron’s story desperately needs to be told, and I will go down with this ship! There are a bunch of other characters worthy of their chapters in here as well, and I really want to write for Knights. Just have to get through Shadow of Revan and Ziost and we’re in the clear.
2. Start Shan. You guys are so infatuated with this post that I figure it deserves to be written. I was going to anyways, but goddamn ya’ll are still reposting it so I’ll see if I can do the plot justice. Currently, the PC is a sith inquisitor named Liv but that could change soon.
3. Finish Bloodlines? I’m not sure if anyone’s particularily enjoying it, but I started it so I’ll finish it. I think. Maybe.
4. Start love interest specific stories. I tend to meander into whole stories of a bunch of OCs and their love interests (see: Bloodlines/Shadow of the Sith), but in 2020 I think I’ll try to appeal to smaller fanbases with certain stories. I’m looking at writing a Mandalorian-centric Ba’shira/Torian fic, a slight rewrite of the Trooper story for Hakiojkl/Aric, a Sith-centric one for Lana/Khaak, a shorter one for a currently unnamed female Sith Warrior/Pierce, shorter one for a currently unnamed female Sith Inquisitor/Andronikos, short one for Bisauur/Zenith and a short one for Naji/Felix. Maybe one for Koth, but goddamn there isn’t a signal fic I can find on him.
5. Write Bad Girls Club. I don’t know why I made this a thing, but goddamn it’s a thing now and I love it. Kind of love the idea of some younger female bounty hunters running around the galaxy and causing chaos.
6. Possibly write a Theron/Outlander/Lana story. Why? I’m not sure but no one has done it yet and with the chemistry Theron and Lana have in-game already plus the chemistry they have as friends if you romance them can’t be easily passed up. Not high on my list of priorities, but it shall be done.
WORD OF THANKS.
My thanks goes out to this list of wonderful people:
@the-sith-in-the-sky-with-diamond, @greencrusader13, @oakstar519, @a-muirehen, @shabre-legacy, @starstrucknerdbatkid, @swtorpadawan, @elaphaemourra, @theherooftython, @anchanted-one, @sheyshen, @roguescarlett, @insufficient-focus, Dragonheart on Discord, Sidhe Vicious and Necril on Discord!! You guys are so great for believing in little 14 year old me and taking a chance on roleplaying with me and reading my fics. You’re so appreciated <3
HAPPY NEW YEAR, AND GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NEW ENDEAVORS!

Read Your Gays 2020
The second readathon I participated in in June was the Read Your Gays readathon, and the theme this year was summer camp. Along with the reading challenges, I also chose to get all my books from my library’s ebook collection. This required be to do some deep searching for books that fit some of the prompts. I also got super lucky that the group book, Felix Ever After, is one that I had on hold for a couple months, and came off hold just in time for the readathon!
Tumblr media
1. A book that takes place in the woods: King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender (5 stars). This is one of the only books that has made me cry this year, and definitely the first book that really move me the last few months. King is a young black boy who has recently lost his brother. As he is dealing with that, he is also dealing with maybe being gay, which he thinks his brother would hate him for. This book is a middle grade, but definitely one of those middle grade books that transcends age.
2. A book with an illustrated cover: The Henna Wars by Adiba Jaigirdar (3 stars). This story follows a Bengali girl in Ireland, who starts a henna business for a school project. Another group also starts a henna business, even though henna is not part of their culture (even though it’s explained to them that it’s cultural appropriation). Our main character is also a lesbian who deals with coming out to her parents, crushing on the new girl, and being outed to the entire school. This book definitely deals with a lot of hard topics (content warnings are posted at the beginning of the book), but I didn’t feel like they were too aggressively done.
3. A book with a bird on the cover: The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta (5 stars). This book is written in verse, and is beautifully done. It follows a black british boy, who deals with his identity of being gay and black throughout middle school, high school, and college (sorry I still have no idea how the school years work in Britain). He always feels like he doesn’t quite fit in, until he joins a drag group in college and creates his Black Flamingo identity (a black boy who wears dresses and is exactly who he is without compromise).
4. A survival or dystopian story: Wilder Girls by Rory Power (3 stars). The book follows these girls on an island who have been affected by a plague that alters/deforms their bodies, while slowing killing them. This book is described as being heavy on the body horror, though I didn’t find it at graphic I expected. Ultimately this book was just okay, because of the ending. It left me feeling a bit like, “what’s the point?” I would definitely be interested in a sequel and seeing where the story goes. I did love the unquestioned queerness of many of the girls on the island, and the friend dynamics that were started (but again did not feel completed, like everything stopped mid arc).
5. A book that prominently features natures: Hurricane Child by Kacen Callender (4 stars). We follow a young girl whose mother has left, and she feels so alone because she has no friends at school, her father is never around, her teacher hates her, and worst of all her mother is gone. One day a new girl moves to her school and the become best of friends, and they love each other in the way many young queer girls love their best friends before they even really know what sexuality is. And they work together to find her mother. This book takes place in the US Virgin Islands, showing a culture that emphasizes the importance of being lighter skinned, and following “traditional” ways of life, but all through a character who is very dark skinned, and comes from a one parent house. Another poignant middle grade from Kacen Callender.
6. The group book: Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender (4 stars). Such a cute story about gender identity and falling in love. This was the last book I read for the week, so I haven’t quite put together all my thoughts, but I really loved the characters and their journey in this book. There was one part of the story that made me feel a bit uncomfortable- the main character, Felix, was talking to a boy from his class over text, and wouldn’t reveal who he was even as the other boy was admitting his feelings for Felix. I don’t like when one character is being vulnerable and the other is being deceptive. This situation was handled well by the author and Felix learned how hurtful his actions were, but there was a moment in the middle where I was worried about how things were going to work. But overall this was so amazing, and I hope everyone gets to read this book!

Healthcare Can Learn From Chess
By KIM BELLARD
Oh, gosh, two of my favorite things are in the news together: Twitch and chess.
Just kidding.  I barely know what Twitch is, and the last time I played chess was, well, not in this century (and, even then, not well).  But I’m not kidding about their convergence.  Chess has become a big hit on Twitch, especially in these COVID times.
I figure, if two such seemingly divergent things are meshing, there must be some lessons there, even for healthcare.
For those of you over, say, fifty, Twitch is an online service that facilitates livestreaming, particularly of gaming.  That is, people watch other people playing games, such Fortnite or League of Legends.
E-sports, as this is known, have become a big thing; colleges are even giving out scholarships for e-sports.   Major news outlets, such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, reported on Twitch re-signing video game star Tyler Blevins, a.k.a “Ninja,” much as they might have reported an NFL team signing a star player.
As I write, 2.7 million people are livingstreaming on Twitch.  Its all-time concurrent viewers peak is just over 6 million.  There were 1.6 billion hours watched in August, with over 11 billion year-to-date.  It draws more viewers than network television hits. There are 93,000 live channels at this moment.
Some of those livestreams are watching chess.  Analytics website Sullygnome reports people watched 45 million hours of chess on Twitter in 2020.  In June an amateur chess tournament was (briefly) the top-viewed Twitch stream. The convergence of streaming and chess has created a “giant chess bonfire,” Marcus Graham, Twitch’s head of creator development, told The New York Times.
The biggest Twitch chess star is grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, who accounted for 10 million of those 45 million hours watched.  Last month esports organization Team SoloMid signed Mr. Nakamura to what is believed to be a six figure deal; he is not the only chess player signing such deals, nor is it the only such organization signing them.  Other key players include Alexandra Botez, Eric Hansen, and Felix “xQc” Lengyel (who is more famous for other games)
Mr. Nakamura has over 500,000 Twitch followers, drawn as much by how he engages viewers as his chess expertise.  “He draws people because he’s so good, but also, there are other top players on Twitch that are not as engaging as he is, not as funny, not as in tune with the sort of Twitch culture,” one viewer told The Times.
Mr. Nakamura’s appeal is, in part, because he helps demystify the game; “Fans love when he loses his mind at a poorly thought-out move.”  One fan told The Times:
When I was growing up, high-level chess was secreted behind closed doors, played by the privileged, moneyed people in society.  Realizing that I could see chess being played at the highest levels and seeing the players on Twitch communicate their thoughts with the community really resonated with me.
In an interview with NPR. Mr. Nakamura acknowledged the conflict: “So there are people who feel very much that chess, as it is, should stay that way as opposed to, say, in a sense cheapening the game by trying to make it more popular.”  His goal is to help break down those barriers.
As The Times asked, “If Serena Williams and Usain Bolt showed off their unique abilities every day on a livestream, wouldn’t you watch?”
Lest we think this is entirely about Twitch, I’ll point out that Chess.com is the world’s third largest gaming website, with 42 million members and an average of over 9 million regular viewers.  It claims to be adding over 1 million users per month.  Chess is adapting to the times.
Twitch isn’t just focused on games, much less on chess.  It has signed musicians and other creators.  It livestreams sports and concerts.  It uses its connection to Amazon Prime to host Watch Parties, so users can “watch, react, and discuss any movie or TV show that is available with their Amazon Prime or Prime Video subscription, directly on Twitch.”  YouTube and Netflix should be worried.
I actually wrote about Twitch several years ago, just after Amazon acquired it for close to a billion dollars, noting at the time:
I’ll posit this: if you didn’t know what Twitch was, or are still puzzled at its appeal, your organization is going to have a tough time competing over the next couple of decades.
That’s even more true today than ever.
As with TikTok, Twitch users are predominately young.  Forty-one percent of its users are 16-24, with another 32% 25-34.  Only 3% are 55-64; users over 65 don’t even count as a rounding error.  It is the converse of our healthcare system’s current users, but it is the generational wave that is coming.
I’ve written before about how healthcare has lessons to learn from disparate platforms like TikTok or Fortnite, as those platforms have extended their reach (e.g., social justice and the Metaverse, respectively).  As best I can tell, Twitch hasn’t paid any attention to health or healthcare.  Then, again, gaming/gamification are still struggling to gain a foothold in healthcare.
Healthcare likes its traditions – white coats, anyone? – and claims to value our privacy so much that it often makes it hard for us or our caregivers to get access to our information.  “Games” or livestreaming to a participatory audience seems like the remotest thing for healthcare.
But if the staid, traditional-laden of chess can thrive in a Twitch environment, there have to be ways that healthcare can take advantage of it as well.  Too much of what goes in healthcare is “secreted behind closed doors,” as the one chess fan said about chess.  We need to open those doors.
I’m not talking about easy uses like yoga classes or even medical lectures; I’m talking about more things like livestreaming surgeries, as Tokyo Women’s Medical University does – in VR.   COVID-19 is prompting some medical schools to do the same.  There are uses we have not yet thought of, but should.  It just probably won’t be healthcare’s largely Baby Boomer leadership that will come up with them.
What healthcare organization or professional will have the first breakout Twitch channel?
Kim is a former emarketing exec at a major Blues plan, editor of the late & lamented Tincture.io, and now regular THCB contributor.

New story in Politics from Time: How Far-Right Personalities And Conspiracy Theorists Are Cashing In On The Pandemic Online
On the evening of Feb. 6, as U.S. news networks reported the death of a doctor in Wuhan, China, who had warned of a deadly new virus, thousands of Americans were tuning in to a different kind of show.
“The good news is I heard actually that you can’t get this if you’re white,” Nick Fuentes, a far-right political commentator, told viewers on his “America First” channel on the streaming platform DLive. “You’re only really susceptible to this virus if you’re Asian,” Fuentes continued. “I think we’ll be O.K.”
Fuentes, 22, a prolific podcaster who on his shows has compared the Holo-caust to a cookie-baking operation, argued that the segregation of Black Americans “was better for them,” and that the First Amendment was “not written for Muslims,” is doing better than O.K. during the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s part of a loose cohort of far-right provocateurs, white nationalists and right-wing extremists who have built large, engaged audiences on lesser-known platforms like DLive after being banned from main-stream sites for spreading hate speech and conspiracy theories.
The model can be lucrative. Viewers pay to watch the livestreams through subscriptions and donations, and the platform allows the content creators to keep most of the revenue. Fuentes appears to have earned more than $140,000 off his DLive streams, cementing himself as the most viewed account on the platform, according to calculations provided to TIME by a livestreaming analyst who was granted anonymity because of their work tracking these accounts. Fuentes is hardly alone. Eight of the 10 top earners on DLive this year as ranked by Social Blade, a social-media analytics website, are far-right commentators, white-nationalist extremists or conspiracy theorists.
The social disruption and economic dislocation caused by the virus–as well as the nationwide protests and civil un-rest that followed the death of George Floyd in late May–has helped fuel this growing, shadowy “alt tech” industry. As public spaces shut down in March, millions of Americans logged online; the livestreaming sector soared 45% from March to April, according to a study by software sites StreamElements and Arsenal.gg. As people became more socially isolated, many increasingly turned to pundits peddling misinformation, conspiracy theories and hate speech. And even as mainstream platforms cracked down on far-right propagandists, online audiences grew. Over the past five months, more than 50 popular accounts reviewed by TIME on sites like DLive have multiplied their viewership and raked in tens of thousands of dollars in online currency by insisting COVID-19 is fake or exaggerated, encouraging followers to resist lockdown orders and broadcasting racist tropes during the nationwide protests over police brutality. Many of these users, including Fuentes, had been banned by major social-media platforms like YouTube for violating policies prohibiting hate speech. But this so-called deplatforming merely pushed them to migrate to less-regulated portals, where some of them have attracted bigger audiences and gamed algorithms to make even more money. In addition, clips of their broadcasts on less-trafficked sites still frequently make it onto YouTube, Twitter and other mainstream platforms, essentially serving as free advertising for their streams elsewhere, experts say.
As social-media giants like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook target hate speech and misinformation, sites like DLive seem to be turning a blind eye, former users and employees say, recognizing that much of their traffic and revenue comes from these accounts. “They care more about having good numbers than weeding these people out,” a former employee of DLive, who was granted anonymity because he still works in the livestreaming sector, tells TIME. (DLive did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)
Which means ordinary users on gaming and streaming platforms, many of them teenagers, are often one click away from white-nationalist content. Many of these far-right personalities allege they are being unfairly censored for conservative political commentary or provocative humor, not hate speech. Most of these viewers won’t respond to streamers’ often cartoonish calls to action, like the “film your hospital” movement in April meant to show that no patients were there, thus “proving” that COVID-19 was fake. But this murky ecosystem of casual viewers, right-wing trolls–and the occasional diehard acolyte–creates a real challenge for technology companies and law-enforcement agencies.
And it doesn’t take much to trigger a tragedy. Over the past two years, terrorists inspired by online right-wing propa-ganda have livestreamed their own deadly attacks in New Zealand and Germany. In March 2019, a Florida man who had been radicalized by far-right media and online conspiracy theorists pleaded guilty to sending more than a dozen pipe bombs to prominent critics of President Donald Trump. A month later, a gunman armed with an AR-15 shot four people, killing one, in a synagogue in Poway, Calif., after allegedly posting a racist and anti-Semitic screed on the site 8chan. About three months later, a man killed 23 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, after posting a racist manifesto online, according to authorities.
With COVID-19 continuing to surge in parts of the country, ongoing protests over racial injustice and the upcoming 2020 U.S. presidential election, the next few months promise to offer fertile ground for bad actors in unmoderated virtual spaces. Far-right propagandists “are really capitalizing on this conspiratorial moment,” says Brian Friedberg, a senior researcher at the Harvard University Shorenstein Center’s Technology and Social Change Project. “Everyone’s locked inside while there is what they refer to as a ‘race war’ happening outside their windows that they are ‘reporting on,’ so this is prime content for white-nationalist spaces.”
The migration of far-right personalities to DLive illustrates how, despite mainstream platforms’ recent crack-downs, the incentives that govern this ecosystem are thriving. Anyone with an Internet connection can continue to leverage conspiracy theories, racism and misogyny for attention and money, experts say.
The outbreak of COVID-19 arrived during a period of reinvention for far-right propagandists in the aftermath of the white-nationalist “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017. Over the past three years, social-media giants, which had endured criticism for giving extremists safe harbor, have increasingly attempted to mitigate hate speech on their sites. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, as well as payment processors like PayPal and GoFundMe, have all shut down accounts run by far-right agitators, neo-Nazis and white supremacists. In late June, YouTube removed the accounts of several well-known figures, including David Duke, a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan, and Richard Spencer, a prominent white nationalist. Reddit, Facebook and Amazon-owned streaming site Twitch also suspended dozens of users and forums for violating hate-speech guidelines.
But these purges hardly solved the problem. Many online extremists were on main-stream platforms like YouTube long enough to build a devoted audience willing to follow them to new corners of the Internet. Some had long prepared for a crackdown by setting up copycat accounts across different platforms, like Twitch, DLive or TikTok. “These people build their brand on You-Tube, and when they get demonetized or feel under threat they’ll set up backup channels on DLive or BitChute,” says Megan Squire, a computer scientist at Elon University who tracks online extremism. “They know it’s going to happen and plan ahead.”
While the suspensions by social-media companies have been effective at limiting the reach of some well-known personalities like conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who was banned from YouTube, Facebook and Apple in 2018, others have quickly adapted. “Content creators are incredibly adept at gaming the systems so that they can still find and cultivate audiences,” says Becca Lewis, a researcher at Stanford University who studies far-right subcultures online, describing these efforts as a “game of whack-a-mole.” Many white-nationalist accounts have tied their ban to the right-wing narrative that conservatives are being silenced by technology companies. For platforms like DLive, becoming what their users consider “free speech” and “uncensored” alternatives can be lucrative. “More speech also means more money for the platform, and less content moderation means less of an expense,” says Lewis.
The prospect of being pushed off main-stream social-media, video-streaming and payment platforms has also prompted extremists to become more sophisticated about the financial side of the business. While Twitch takes a 50% cut from livestreamers’ earnings and YouTube takes 45%, platforms like DLive allow content creators to keep 90% of what they make. And as many found themselves cut off from mainstream payment services like PayPal, GoFundMe and Patreon, they began to embrace digital currencies.
DLive was founded in December 2017 by Chinese-born and U.S.-educated entrepreneurs Charles Wayn and Cole Chen, who made no secret of their ambition to build a platform that rivaled Twitch. They described the site as a general-interest streaming platform, focused on everything from “e-sports to lifestyle, crypto and news.” But two things set it apart from its competitors: it did not take a cut of the revenue generated by its streamers, and it issued an implicit promise of a less moderated, more permissive space.
DLive’s first big coup came in April 2019 when it announced an exclusive streaming deal with Felix Kjellberg, known as PewDiePie. In just two months, DLive’s total number of users grew by 67%. At the time, Kjellberg was the most popular individual creator on YouTube, with more than 93 million subscribers and his own controversial history. In 2018, he came under fire for making anti-Semitic jokes and racist remarks, and more than 94,000 people signed a Change.org petition to ban his channel from YouTube for being a “platform for white-supremacist content.” The petition noted that “the New Zealand mosque shooter mentioned PewDiePie by name and asked people to subscribe.”
DLive’s community guidelines theoretically prohibit “hate speech that directly attacks a person or group on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, disease, age, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity.” But it soon became apparent to both employees and users that executives were willing to ignore venomous content. By early 2019, “political” shows were gaining traction on the site. Those programs devolved into “streams dedicated to white pride and a lot of anti-Semitism, entire streams talking about how Jewish people are evil,” says the former DLive employee who spoke to TIME, adding that moderators acted much more quickly when it came to copyright concerns. “Your stream would be taken down faster for streaming sports than saying you hate Jews.”
The employee recalls raising the matter with Wayn, noting how off-putting it was for new users coming to watch or broadcast streams of popular video games. According to the employee, Wayn explained that the company “didn’t want to get rid of these problematic streamers because they brought in numbers.” The founders knew they had to keep viewers because, as Wayn noted in a 2019 interview, if they wanted to “compete with Twitch on the same level and even take them down one day, DLive needs to match its scale.” Wayn did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
By June 2020, DLive seemed to be openly cultivating a right-of-center audience. On Twitter, it briefly changed its bio to read “All Lives Matter,” a right-wing rallying cry in response to Black Lives Matter. The site has increasingly become a haven for fanaticism, says Joan Donovan, the research director of Harvard’s Shorenstein Center. “Before, on YouTube, some of these people would do a dance with the terms of service,” she tells TIME. “But on DLive, the gloves are off, and it’s just full white-supremacist content with very few caveats.”
On the night of June 29, Fuentes had 56% of the site’s total viewership at 10 p.m., according to the review of the site’s analytics provided to TIME. An additional 39% was viewers of 22 other extremist personalities streaming their commentary. At one point on the night of Aug. 10, just 176 of the more than 15,000 viewers on the top 20 channels on the site were not watching accounts linked to far-right figures. Popular programming in recent months has included alarmist footage of racial-justice protests, antivaccine propaganda, conspiracies linking 5G networks to the spread of COVID-19 and calls to “make more white babies while quarantined.”
The company may be even more reliant on those accounts now. Some users have left the site, complaining publicly about the virulent racism and anti-Semitism spilling over into regular channels and game streams. “DLive is a safe-haven for racists and alt-right streamers,” one user wrote on Twitter on June 22. “Seems to me DLive is the new platform for white supremacists,” wrote another, echoing complaints that it’s a “literal Nazi breeding ground” and “the place where racists don’t get deplatformed.”
The migration of hate speech to far-flung corners of the Internet could make it harder to track, increasing the risk that it spills into the offline world. Experts say law-enforcement and national-security agencies are still unprepared to tackle right-wing extremism. They lack expertise not only in the rapidly evolving technology but also in the ideological ecosystem that has spawned a battery of far-right movements. The recently repackaged white-nationalist youth movement, with new names like “America First” or the “Groypers,” looks more like “gussied-up campus conservatives,” as Friedberg of Harvard’s Shorenstein Center puts it, “so they are not triggering the same warning bells.”
Recent incidents show how this online environment that blends political commentary and hate speech can be dangerous. An 18-year-old accused of firebombing a Delaware Planned Parenthood clinic in January was identified through his Instagram profile, which contained far-right memes reflecting popular beliefs in the young white-nationalist movement, according to BuzzFeed News. In June, Facebook deactivated nearly 200 social-media accounts with ties to white-nationalist groups rallying members to attend Black Lives Matter protests, in some cases armed with weapons.
Analysts who track extremist recruitment online also warn that the pandemic may have long-term effects on young people who are now spending far more time on the Internet. Without the structure of school and social activities, many children and teenagers are spending hours a day in spaces where extremist content lurks alongside games and other benign entertainment, says Dana Coester, an associate professor at West Virginia University who researches the impact of online white extremism on youth in Appalachia. It’s common, she notes, to see teenagers sharing Black Lives Matter messages alongside racist cartoons from popular Instagram accounts targeting middle schoolers. “So many parents I’ve spoken with say their kids are on devices until 3 in the morning,” she says. “I can’t begin to imagine how much damage can be done with kids that many hours a day marinating in really toxic content.”
Analysts warn that both U.S. law enforcement and big technology companies need to move quickly to hire experts who understand this new extremist ecosystem. Experts say the mainstream platforms’ recent purges are reactive: they patch yesterday’s problems instead of preventing future abuses, and focus on high-profile provocateurs instead of the underlying networks.
One solution may be to follow the money, as content creators migrate to new platforms in search of new financial opportunities. “[White supremacists] have become particularly as-siduous at exploiting new methods of fundraising, often seeking out platforms that have not yet realized how extremists can exploit them,” said George Selim, senior vice president of programs of the Anti-Defamation League, in testimony before a House subcommittee in January. “When a new fund-raising method or platform emerges, white supremacists can find a window of opportunity. These windows can, however, be shut if platforms promptly take countermeasures.”
On the evening of Aug. 11, Joe Biden’s pick of Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate dominated the news. “She hates white people,” Fuentes told viewers on DLive. “She is going to use the full weight of the federal government … to destroy conservatives, to destroy America First, anybody that speaks up for white people.” NBC and ABC News–which have a combined 13 million subscribers on YouTube–had an average of 6,100 concurrent viewers watching their coverage. Fuentes’ show had 9,000.

Felinette Month 2020 - Day 6: Detective
Enjoy this unedited, angsty fic for another wonderful @felinettenovember prompt. I attempted to do something different but I’m seeing wayyyyyy too much of my own thought process projected onto both Marinette and Felix.
Have fun! Around 1700 words
"Stop laughing at me! I'm telling you that I think she's cheating on me. Why are you still laughing?" Felix spiraled while Claude continued laughing.
"This is Marinette we're talking about! What could possibly convince you that she was cheating?" Claude gasped out between laughs. Felix had been growing redder by the minute under his indignation.
“She has been sneaking around, avoiding me whenever there is a spare minute to chat, whispering to her friends and suddenly quieting and flushing whenever she catches sight of me. She won’t even look me in the eyes anymore. All I wanted was to ask her on a date for tomorrow, take her someplace nice and quiet where she can relax and we can just talk. I even got her a nice necklace that will be gorgeous with most of her outfits. How would you explain her sneaking off every day?” Felix had already worked himself into a panic, rolling it around in his head over and over until he came to the only explanation that made sense. Marinette had to be cheating. He didn’t know with whom. She was so lively and sweet, friends with everyone, and many guys (and a few girls) had a thing for her. It could be just about anyone.
“Marinette has the decency to at least break up with you if she was going to choose another guy. You know that. I know that. Let’s not pretend like that is even possible.” Claude sobered, finally realizing that Felix wasn’t in a good enough place with this. “Look, I know she’s the best thing that’s happened to you in a while and that you’ve been really stressed out lately, but you need to take a few deep breaths before you drive yourself crazy. Don’t you think that it’s more likely that she’s just busy and stressed out working on some project? Don’t her classmates constantly ask her to design and make them stuff, especially for events? Isn’t that more likely?”
“That’s not it. Trust me, I can tell. Just because this is our first Valentine’s Day together, doesn’t mean I'm new to her patterns. She is avoiding me,” Felix glumly asserted. The bell sounded, releasing them from school for the day. Felix grabbed his bag and quickly walked towards Marinette’s class. At the last moment, he changed his mind about going directly to her and hid near a column.
“I’m just nervous that he’s going to find out. This isn’t something small to hide and it’s been really hard. I can’t even look at him right now.” Marinette sighed to Alya, walking quickly towards the door. “I need to hurry so I’m not late to meet Luka. Thanks for listening to me rambling!”
Felix tried to quickly follow out of the school, sneaking to find out why she was so determined to meet Luka. He hadn’t met Luka yet, but he knew from context that he had already confessed to Marinette, prior to when they began dating, and Marinette had seriously considered dating him. Instead of accepting she chose to wait and see how I felt about her… Oh no… she regrets it but doesn’t want to ruin my Valentine’s Day!
Felix fought against the overwhelming weight of self-depreciation and fear, trying to follow Marinette down the street towards the Seine so he could at least confirm with his own eyes. He was so caught up in his own panic that he nearly lost her when she stopped in line to grab two hot chocolates. Ducking into a shop when he realized his mistake, he watched and chastised himself. This is why Marinette is going to him. Even when I’m trying to focus on her, I’m only thinking of me.
Within a few minutes, Marinette was on the move again with Felix secretly in tow. Luka was waiting outside the house boat and gladly accepted the hot chocolate. Felix couldn’t believe that he tried to hand Marinette a few euros to cover the cost. Luka handed her back the hot chocolate and quickly jogged onto the deck to grab his backpack. With an overly full bag, the two started off again, talking quickly as they walked swiftly. Felix knew he needed to focus on how they interacted before confronting Marinette about this. She shouldn’t be stuck with him if she was unhappy, even if it would make Valentine’s Day disappointing for him.
Soon the pair were turning down a strange alley, not sketchy per say but definitely not where Felix was expecting. He tried to peer around before turning in but quickly realized he was alone in the alley. He hurried in, looking around for where they could’ve gone before noticing a ladder leading up to a small terrace, mostly hidden from view. The flush that was developing from all of this exercise quickly drained and the pit steadily growing in his stomach became unbearable.
Marinette’s laugh rang out from above. If he backed up and peered up, Felix could see some hanging lights and possibly some lawn furniture. They were definitely up there. He knew he wouldn’t have the courage to wait for them to leave to confront them, so he needed to go up. Another deep breath first, to steady his nerves.
He grabbed the ladder and started to climb. Poking his head up through the opening to the terrace, he glanced around and saw unfinished decorations in excess. Marinette still trying to hang some things up, curtains? And Luka setting up a table with candles and fake flowers? Oh god. I walked in on them preparing their date… I need to get this over with.
“Marinette…” his voice came out shakier than he wanted but he hoped she wouldn’t notice. He moved to sit on the ground near the ladder. Her head turned in a strange, jerky motion that betrayed either fear or guilt, Felix couldn’t decide. Her mouth dropped in surprise.
“What’re you doing here right now? You weren’t supposed to see this yet,” she blurted out. Luka also looked over at the two and looked embarrassed at being there.
“Unless you want me to stay and help you with anything else, I think I’ll just leave now.” Luka picked up his bag and walked towards the ladder, faster than a walk but smooth enough to not really look like running away. Felix looked him in the eyes as he approached.
“That’s probably a good idea. I’m sure that Marinette will fill you in on anything important later,” his tone was sharp, nearly accusatory. He didn’t feel much patience towards the other boy right now, even if they weren’t actively engaged in anything when he got up to this hideaway.
“So Marinette, do you want to discuss why you’ve been avoiding me lately and going to secret places alone with Luka?” Felix hoped he sounded more calm than he felt as he stared coldly at Marinette. It hurt to look at her like this, to feel so abandoned by the one person that felt like home.
“Well for one, this is the first time that Luka and I have been alone and others are planning on coming, unless Luka texted them not to. I’ve been enlisting his and a few others’ help to get this set up,” she turned, gesturing to the decorations set up. “The only parts left to do involved putting up the canopy, just in case it gets wet before tomorrow night, the curtains, for a little more insulation from the weather, and to set up these last few details that might’ve blown away if I left them outside. It was a rather big project so I wanted to make sure every piece went smoothly. As for the avoiding part… it’s actually rather difficult not to talk about this and ruin the surprise for you but I guess that won’t be an issue anymore,” Marinette grinned sheepishly at the floor. She took a few steps closer and sat down on the ground, a few feet from him to let him process, but looking more earnestly at him. He appreciated that she knew how he preferred space while working through topics but loved contact the moment he was done, and this was definitely a lot to process.
“I need you to explain more clearly what is happening. This all seemed like you were cheating on me, or at least planning to break up with me, but your words don’t make sense with that right now,” Felix couldn’t keep from pleading. She had thrown a lifeline while he was drowning but that didn’t mean she was planning on helping pull him back to the boat. He remembered her firm insistence that he treat others with better manners outside of formal events and added after the moment’s hesitation, “Please.”
“Oh Felix… I’m so sorry that this gave you the impression that that was happening here. I knew you’d been getting busier at home and wanted to throw you a little getaway where we probably wouldn’t be found by your bodyguard right away so you could relax more… I needed help from the others to find this place, get approval to use it for about a couple of weeks, and to set up all of this without the risk of it getting ruined. I just wanted the best surprise for you for our first Valentine’s Day together…” As Marinette spoke, Felix’s eyes widened before dropping his head into his hands.
“My god Marinette. I am such an idiot. Here I thought I was some amazing detective, figuring out the mystery and really I just worked myself up. Claude was right. I was thinking so much about everything that I drove myself crazy,” Felix couldn’t help but bitterly laugh at the idea.
“So he didn’t tell you what was happening when you were freaking out?” Marinette straightened up and pulled his hands into hers, eyes deadly serious.
“What do you mean? He just told me that you cheating wasn’t possible and I needed to take a few deep breaths to calm down…” Felix couldn’t quite grasp why Marinette looked flabbergasted.
“Well Claude and I need to sit down and discuss when it’s an appropriate time to break the code of silence for a surprise. Spiraling like this is an appropriate time to let you in on the surprise. My goodness…”
Felix finally understood.
“I’m going to kill him for not telling me at that point.”
