A couple of months ago, I was explaining to my boyfriend that I am not a fan of Tyler the Creator. We were in the car, he was driving and I had probably taken over the music. Dogtooth was in our current rotation and it was probably what sprung the topic. “I like some of the Tyler songs, but I wouldn't call myself a fan”. We had listened to Call Me If You Get Lost and it's deluxe The Estate Sale, together from top to bottom. I could never find myself relating to a full Tyler Body of work. I beat the brakes off Earfquake and Who Dat Boy, but Tyler has never been one of my go-to's.

This album, however, is for the late twenty or early thirty-somethings. With themes of home-building being a constant lyrical motif. Whether he's talking about locking the doors and protecting his coveted assets or ruminating if he's ready to have children. This provides the perfect stage for me, someone only a little younger than Tyler and who couldn't get into him before, to relate to him. Tyler is using his insecurity about what he should be doing versus how he is doing as the vehicle for this album’s message.

Hey Jane, brings about a tone shift from the first half of the album. The first few songs feel like you can only go up. Hey, Jane pulls up and slows things down, reminding you and Tyler as the narrator that things are happening outside of you and it's time to come back down to earth.

Judge Judy, brings about a tongue-in-cheek, “corniness” that Tyler pulls off in a way that I haven't identified with since Roses by Outkast. This “corniness” serves to play into how Tyler and those who identify with his lyrics aren't there yet, maturity-wise despite adult themes. We're all just out here d*ckin around.

Another perfect swag track to add to his repertoire is Sticky. Tyler fully embraces the “bitch track” (a la RuPaul) by declaring I'm that n*gga and that b*tch. He also does that by putting some of the hottest women in rap on the song. I damn near jumped out of my skin when I heard GloRilla. Sexyy Red, not so much. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by her. She was used to her strength, as a seasoning and not a main ingredient. Both GloRilla and Sexyy Red’s verses were tight and didn't overstay their welcome. No notes. Then Lil’ Wayne comes in and I'm jumping for joy. The 12-year-old in me that grew up with the Carter 3 is appeased. Sticky is a new favorite!

The narration over certain songs and transitions kind of reminds me of a mother or older sibling. Doling out sometimes misguided advice. The voice being peppered throughout the album is almost like a voice in the listener's head. The voice prescribes their virtues but also says how proud they are and how much they love you.

Balloon Ft Doechii is another great collab track and plays to the vibe both artists are on right now. The song embraces the queer and dance elements that Doechii has been utilizing for Alligator Bites Never Heal while seamlessly fitting into Chromakopia.

Balloon flows into the album's final track: I Hope You Find Your Way Home which serves as the cathartic roll credits on the album and perhaps the Call Me If You Get Lost era also. The song ends with the barking that Tyler has been adding to his songs as of late. As well as by calling out the album title Chromakopia, the same way as the album's first track St. Chroma. This perhaps is ushering us toward whatever Tyler has in store for the future.

I'm sad I didn't get the Doja Cat collab that Coachella had me convinced would materialize and the album was desperately needed (if only because the eras are so similar and it would make me happy). I think I'll be looking forward to whatever Tyler may do next. Maybe I am a fan.

Names in Severance

Studies show that first names tend to be particular to individuals, whereas surnames are tied to the family.

I went on a deep dive on researching name meanings on Severance, as I'm sure many others have. For those of you not insane enough to do this, my findings are below the cut.

Spoilers up to and including episode four of season two.

Why am I doing this? Well, names play a massive role in this show.

Gabby chooses the name William for her baby but Gabrielle names him Declan, which clues Devon in to something being up with her. The first chapter of The You You Are is about names, and after Ricken's reading Rebeck says she'll have to change her name again.

But most notably: the innies have no last names of their own and don't know the first names of their superiors. This divide is a huge aspect of the power dynamics of the severed floor and seemingly the rest of Lumon, as Cobel is referred to casually as Harmony by Natalie and other superiors but only ever as Ms. Cobel by the MDR department. Helena knowing Milchick's first name and casually calling him by it is what finally confirms Irving's suspicions, and he immediately weaponizes it against him. "Yes, do it, SETH."

I'm listing the full known name at the top (except for repeats like last names being the same) and then the meaning of each name in a subsequent line. So for example "Ricken Lazlo Hale" gets three lines: the first one for Ricken, then Lazlo, then Hale. If it's in the same line it's a different possible meaning for the same name. My own notes are in brackets.

And what does all this mean? WELL, some themes I'm picking up on are the water, fire and earth, as well as light and living forever. It's of interest to me that both Gemma and Peter refer to a sort of stone, which is a plus for Mark/Petey shippers. There's a lot of water imagery connected with Lumon, but Eagan means fire. Then there's Huang meaning phoenix, which is rebirth through fire. I'm not sure how to take this yet but it's percolating.

The double meaning of Gemma is also really giving some big clone energy, I'm sorry to say. I know the makers of the show have stated that there's not a clone thing going on, but there's something happening here. I hope Ms. Huang isn't her clone, mostly because they're wildly different looking people whose only real commonality is being asian women.

I've also been looking into alchemy and the Philosopher's Stone as it relates to the themes of Severance, and all of this really rhymes with a lot of that. (I might make a seperate post about it tbh.)

Kilmer meaning kiln worker also really fucks with me, what with the water/fire/earth thing. You need water to mold clay, but firing it in a kiln turns it solid. In the Perpetuity Wing Irving tells Helly: "It’s an unnatural state for a person to have no history. History makes us someone. Gives us a context. A shape. But waking up on that table, I was shapeless." And Mark was a professor of history, and Casey made him sculpt his feelings out of clay, and he sculpted the tree that Gemma hit with her car, which neither of them remember... there's something here, I think.

I think Ricken and his friends, especially Patton, are descended from old money and may even be distantly related to the Eagans.

And then there's Reghabi, which doesn't seem to exist as a name/word outside of this show, but "ghabi" literally only returns results about the Urdu word meaning "idiot". I might be way off base but it makes me worried Reghabi isn't trustworthy. It's giving "the surest way to tame a prisoner is to let him believe he's free".

was this the best episode of severance yet? I think so. It kept hitting points that I thought were going to The Big Thing for the episode. And then something MORE happened.

Irving's moment with Felicia was so sweet. And he found out where the door was, and I thought that was going to be the big plot advancement. But it was like the smallest.

I was crying over Dylan's wife saying she loved him. That whole scene. What a mindfuck for Dylan. Ohmygod. He was so child-like the whole time.

He's actually kind of a fuckup? I'll be good. I'll make y'all proud of me.

I'm always proud of you. I love you.

And he can't say it back! Oh my God. it's heartbreaking is what it is.

BUT THEN MARK. OH MY GOD MARK. HIS FACE. When he was told Gemma's alive. I could feel that in my soul. Someone give Adam Scott an award for that oh my God. That fucking transcended the screen.

And then he agrees so fast to reintegrate! That's all it took!

Like there is so much media that starts with a guy with a dead wife, and I think this is the only one I've seen where it really truly feels for real like he loves her and that it's a real loss and not just a plot device. Part of it is that is the writing and that the way Mark grieves her is so messy and so real, but not gratuitous. But the acting needs to sell it and omg Adam Scott does.

And then reintegration is happening already! I would have pegged that for, like, an episode 7 development. But nope! They are keeping us on our toes and picking up the pace! My jaw was open for the whole last two scenes.

And on top of all that: More goat lore! They Hamilton-ified Kier Eagan.

And what the heck happened with Cobel? I hope I didn't miss anything.

But I'm starting believe the its-Helena-not-Helly theory. Like there's something they're holding back about her.
