Penelope!!!! (If she was in Hades 2)
Tumblr media
The location I would put her in doesn’t exist in the game yet, but I tried to do a bit of a background.
Tumblr media
Personally I would understand if Penelope doesn’t actually show up in Hades 2, there’s so much going on in the game already, buuuut if she was there….
I think there’s a lot of fun metaphor in unraveling the day’s weavings as a form of turning back the clock, hence “Witch of Unwinding”. Penelope isn’t referred to as a witch in any myths that I know of, but for various reasons I think it’s a fun change.

How do you get that grainy texture on your art? It’s very nice!
thank you!! i love art that's soft and fuzzy...
i generally do it a handful of different ways, but i tend to bounce between a color noise filter layer in soft light mode, between 30% and 50% opacity,
Tumblr media
... or i use something from my wide array of paper textures, and usually set the layer to overlay and play with opacity till i'm happy with it
Tumblr media
......oooorr i do a combination of the two! which i did in the final version of this piece, which i Also added a gradient map to to make the colors a lil more ✨Dramatic✨
Tumblr media
here's where i got (most of) my paper textures and here's a rainbow color noise texture (that i don't personally use but looks rlly similar!)

In a kind and respectful manner, can I ask what peoples aversion to BBU content is? I am curious, since I see a lot of intro posts that don’t prefer the trope.

So, I'm writing an essay on the whole STATE of misogyny in WC for one of my university classes, and I was wondering if I could ask you a couple of things! No pressure of course, please feel free to say no!
A) Could I reference your good takes with appropriate harvard referencing and links back to your blog?
B) Are there any specific moments from the books that you think should be covered the most?
C) The end result will be a visual essay, so it's like those fun infographics people on Tumblr make on like ADHD and stuff, so when it's done, would you like to be tagged to read it?
(Sorry for anon, I'm nervous lmao, but if you'd be more comfortable I'll resend this off anon)
AAY good topic! You've got a lot to work with. Absolutely feel free to reference anything I've written, and tag me when you're done.
While you're here and about to write something so legitimate, I'm also going to recommend you check out Sunnyfall's video on gender in Warrior Cats. She breaks down the arcs into numbers, directly comparing the amount of lines mollies have to toms, and examining the archetypes women are usually allowed to be.
I think it's a must-have citation in a paper about WC misogyny.
...and, I think it's insightful to look at the WCRP Forum thread about the video. Note how the respondents immediately come into the thread to complain about how the video is too long so they didn't watch it, dismissing Sunnyfall as not being entertaining enough to hold their attention, even whining that she starts with statistics to prove her point, which I'm convinced she did exactly because they would have cried that she "had no evidence" if she didn't.
I am not a scholar, so I don't know how to document or prove that the books have an impact on the audience outside of anecdotes. But I think if you do write a section about fandom, it would be worth mentioning the in-universe and metatextual apologia for Ashfur and its reflection in the real world discourse, the authorial killing of Ferncloud because of fan complains, and the utter defensiveness against the discussion of misogyny you see outside of Tumblr.
You may also want to check out Cheek by Jowl, a collection of 8 essays about sexism in xenofiction by Ursula K. Le Guin. There's a very unique manifestation of authorial bias in animal fiction, having a lot to do with how the author views "the natural world," and it's worth understanding even though Warrior Cats are so heavily anthropomorphized.
So... Warrior Cats Misogyny
I think discussing individual instances can be helpful, but I'd implore you to keep in mind what's REALLY bad about WC's misogyny is framing and the bigger picture.
Bumble's death is shocking and insulting, but it's not just that she died. It's that the POV Gray Wing sees her as a fat, useless bitch who took his mate so she deserves to be dragged back to a domestic abuser, and he's right because the writers love him so much. It's that Bumble's torture and killing only factors into how it's going to hurt a man's reputation.
It's how Clear Sky hitting, emotionally manipulating, or killing the following women,
Bright Stream (pressured into leaving her home and family)
Storm (controlled her movements and yelled at her in public)
Misty (killed for land, children stolen)
Bumble (beaten unconscious, blamed nonsensically on a fox)
Alder (child abuse, hit when she refused to attack her brother)
Falling Feather (scratched on the face, subjected to public abuse and humiliation)
Tall Shadow (thrown into murderous crowd, attacked on-sight in heaven)
Rainswept Flower ("blacked out" in anger and murdered in cold blood)
Moth Flight (scratched on the face for saying denying medical treatment is mean, taken hostage in retaliation against mother for the death of his own child, which he caused)
Willow Tail (eyes gouged out for "stirring up trouble")
Is seen as totally understandable, forgivable, or not even questioned at all, when killing Gray Wing in an act of rage would have been "one step too far" with the ridiculous Star Line.
"Kill me and live with the memory, and then let the stars know it would only matter if a single one of your murder victims was a man."
It's the way that fathers who physically abuse their kids out of their ego (Clear Sky, Sandgorse, Crowfeather) aren't treated anywhere near the same level of narrative disgust and revulsion the series has for "bad moms", even if they're displaying symptoms of a post-partum mood disorder (depression, anxiety, and rage), an umbrella of mental illnesses 20% of all new mothers experience but are heavily stigmatized with (Sparkpelt, Palebird, Lizardstripe).
It's Crookedstar's Promise giving him two evil maternal figures in a single book, while bending over backwards to make every man in a position of power still look likeable in spite of the fact they're enabling Rainflower's abuse. Leader Hailstar is soso sorry that he has to change Stormkit's name for some reason, in spite of leaders being unaccountable dictators the other 99% of the time, and Deputy Shellheart functionally does nothing to stop his own son from being abused or even do much parenting before or after the fact.
It's the way men's parental struggles are seen sympathetically, and they don't have to "pay for it" like their female counterparts (Crookedstar's PPD vs Sparkpelt's PPD, how Daisy and Cinders are held responsible for Smoky and Whisper being deadbeats, Yellowfang's endless guilt for killing her son vs Onestar's purpose in life to kill his own), even to the point where a father doesn't have to have raised their kids at all to have a magical innate emotional connection to them (Tree's father Root, Tom the Wifebeater, Tigerstar and Hawkfrost).
It's less speaking lines and agency for female characters, being reduced to accessories in the lives of their mates and babies, women getting less diversity in their personalities, with even major ex-POV characters eventually becoming "sweet mom" tropes.
You could zoom in on any one of these examples and have an amoeba try to argue with you that "Oh THIS makes sense because X" or "Ah well my headcanon perfectly explains this thing" or "MY mother/girlfriend was abusive/toxic/neglectful and I've decided that you are personally attacking ME by having issues with how a character was written or utilized," but the beleaguered point,
That I keep trying to hammer in, over and over, across books worth of posts,
Is that these are trends. More than just a couple one-off examples. It's the fabric that has been woven over years, showing a lack of interest in, or even active prejudice of, women on behalf of the writers.
LONG STANDING trends, which have only gotten worse as the series progressed. From Yellowfang being harshly punished with a born evil son who ruins her life in TPB and the mistreatment of Squirrelpaw that begins in TNP, all the way up to the 7 Fridgenings of DOTC and Sparkpelt's PPD being a major character motivator for her son Nightheart.
So, I would stress that in your paper, and structure it less as "the Sparkpelt slide" and "the Yellowfang slide," and more as "The paternal vs maternal abuse" slide, and "the violence against women" slide. They're really big issues, there's tons of examples for each individual thing.
Anyway to leave off on a funny, look at this scene in Darkest Hour that I find unreasonably hilarious,
Tumblr media
"Everyone who matters to me; my truest friend, my sensible and loyal warrior, the wisest deputy I've ever known, and 2 women." -Firestar, glorious idiot
He can't even think of a single trait for either of them what the hell does "formidable pair" mean lmaooo, when I finished a reread about a year ago this line killed me on impact.

GoFundMe for a Friend
I don't got a large following on here but I hope posting it will get it some attention.
A friend of mine got a lung infection that her doctor didn't take serious, which ended up causing her health issues that she'll have to deal with for the rest of her life. On top of that, she was also hit with a medical bill of 581,44 € that she has to pay until mid december.
Her insurance won't cover it and she has no way to pay for this.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

This is a little info post.
I am selenophobic, which means I have an intense, irrational fear of the moon. This is partly induced by psychosis.
I have had far more panic attacks than I can count just from using my tumblr dashboard.
Please, if you are my mutual, consider tagging #selenophobia #moon #mochi dont look or #no mochi
(If you tag the third one, make sure there isn’t an apostrophe, as it glitches and shows the post anyway.)
This fear applies to drawings, cartoon designs, photos, icons, and text. Pretty much anything that you would think, “Is this a trigger?” the answer is yes.
Eclipses are included in this. The shadow of the moon is just as terrifying as being able to see it.
In short, please consider making my dash a little safer for me to use <3 thank you!

Where do you find these manuscripts? Is it like a website or do you find it randomly??
hey, thanks for the curiosity! lenghty answer below the cut :)
1)
medieval manuscripts are typically owned by libraries and showcased on the library's websites. so one thing i do is i randomly browse those digitized manuscript collections (like the collections of the bavarian state library or the bodleian libraries, to name just two), which everybody can do for free without any special access. some digital collections provide more useful tools than others (like search functions, filters, annotations on each manuscript). if they don't, the process of wading through numerous non-illustrated manuscripts before i find an illustrated one at all can be quite tedious.
2)
there are databases which help to navigate the vast sea of manuscripts. the one i couldn't live without personally use the most is called KdIH (Katalog der deutschsprachigen illustrierten Handschriften des Mittelalters). it's a project which aims to list all illustrated medieval manuscripts written in german dialects. the KdIH provides descriptions of the contents of each manuscript (with a focus on the illustrations), and if there's a digital reproduction of a manuscript available anywhere, the KdIH usually links to it. the KdIH is an invaluable tool for me because of its focus on illustrated manuscripts, because of the informations it provides for each manuscript, and because of its useful search function (once you've gotten over the initial confusion of how to navigate the website). the downside is that it includes only german manuscripts, which is one of the main reasons for the over-representation of german manuscripts on my blog (sorry about that).
3)
another important database for german manuscripts in general (i.e. not just illustrated ones) is the handschriftencensus, which catalogues information regarding the entirety of german language manuscripts of the middle ages, and also links to the digital reproductions of each manuscript.
4)
then there are simply considerable snowball effects. if you do even just superficial research on any medieval topic at all (say, if you open the wikipedia article on alchemy), you will inevitably stumble upon mentions of specific illustrated manuscripts. the next step is to simply search for a digital copy of the manuscript in question (this part can sometimes be easier said than done, especially when you're coming from wikipedia). one thing to keep in mind is that a manuscript illustration seldom comes alone - so every hint to any illustration at all is a greatly valuable one (if you do what i do lol). there's always gonna be something interesting in any given illustrated manuscript. (sidenote: one very effective 'cheat code' would be to simply go through all manuscripts that other online hobbyist archivers of manuscript illustrations have gone through before - like @discardingimages on tumblr - but some kind of 'professional pride' detains me from doing so. that's just a kind of stubbornness though. like, i want to find my material more or less on my own, not just the images but also the manuscripts, and i apply arbitrary rules to my search as to what exactly that means.)
5)
whatever tool or strategy i use to find specific illustrated manuscripts-- in the end, one unavoidable step is to actually manually skim through the (digitized) manuscript. i usually have at least a quick look at every single illustrated page, and i download or screenshot everything that is interesting to me. this process can take up to an hour per manuscript.
---
in conclusion, i'd say that finding cool illuminated manuscripts is much simpler than i would have thought before i started this blog. there are so many of them out there and they're basically just 'hidden in plain side', it's really astounding. finding the manuscripts doesn't require special skills, just some basic experience with/knowledge of the tools available. the reason i'm able to post interesting images almost daily is just that i spend a lot of time doing all of this, going through manuscripts, curating this blog, etc. i find a lot of comfort in it, i learn a lot along the way, and i immensely enjoy people's engagement with my posts. so that's that :)

Bug Fables OC Collab Announcement Post
Tumblr media
Okay, here we go!
A little background: Last year, we did the Bug Fables NPC Collab where a bunch of artists worked together to illustrate all of the NPCs in the game set in locations they're associated with. In addition to the NPCs themselves, we made the backdrop art. And so this year, I thought it would be fun to reuse the backdrops to stage OC art instead!
I made most of the backgrounds, and I have gotten permission from some of the other background artists to include their pieces as well, so we have most of Bugaria represented.
And now, this is where you come in - it's time to draw your OCs!
A quick run-down of how this will go: -Read the Full Guide (a google doc) for information and details -Fill out the Interest Form so that I can gauge how many potential participants there will be and have a means of contacting folks. -(Optional) Join the Discord Server (invite provided after you fill out the Interest Form. You do NOT need to join the server to participate. -Make your art. Take your time. You have three-and-a-half months to do it :) -Submit your character art to the Submission Form on or before Saturday, August 17, 2024. -After the art is all submitted, I will arrange the characters on the preferred backdrops and post them by the end of September.
If you don't want to join the server to see updates/announcements, be sure to follow the tag #BF OC Collab
I hope you will consider joining this project! The more, the merrier. I'd love to see as many art styles and character designs as possible included in these pieces.

Guide to Having An Abortion in the U.S.
First & Early Second Trimester Abortion
Mifepristone + misoprostol are the medications most commonly used for medication abortion, and there are a number of legitimate sites where you can purchase them online (aidaccess is a good option). They will typically come together, although sometimes they are used alone. This combination is safe for first and second trimester abortions, although it may be less effective in the second trimester (or sometimes even earlier, after ten weeks). These pills can be taken sublingually (underneath the tongue) or vaginally (guide to taking abortion pills).
Avoid purchasing miffy or miso from sites that want more information from you than an address & payment method, that don't provide information about how to safely take the pills, or that use inflammatory or sales-pitch-y language. Don't take pills that come in open/unsealed packaging. Planned Parenthood (in states with legal abortion) is the most widespread reputable distributor of medication abortion.
Later Term Abortion (Surgical)
If you find yourself unable to access medication abortion, remember that, at this point (November 2024), it is still legal to cross state lines to have an abortion, and, if it becomes illegal, you can still cross state lines under another pretense, as people have been doing for decades. There are abortion provision organizations that can help you with the costs of travel and abortion services (national network of abortion funds, midwest access coalition). Planned Parenthood is the largest provider system, with clinics in many states, and the largest abortion clinic in the U.S. is located in Illinois.
Avoid institutions that call themselves "crisis pregnancy centers" or "women's health clinics," especially if they don't directly say they provide abortion services on their website. There are a number of predatory pro-life clinics that will give you misinformation about abortion or deliberately waste your time, and you don't want them to know that you are seeking an abortion, especially if you are living in an area where abortion is illegal or highly restricted.
You will be asked for informed consent when receiving an abortion procedure. Make sure that you read and understand everything before signing, keeping in mind that marginalized people (particularly Black, Indigenous, Puerto Rican, and disabled people) in the U.S. have historically been coercively sterilized when requesting abortion procedures. If you feel that your consent involves coercion to agree to something you don't want, try to find access somewhere else first. Trying to find abortion access can make you feel very desperate, but your autonomy and safety are paramount considerations. See if a provision service can help you find an alternative if at all possible.
Illegal Providers
In some circumstances, you may need to get a surgical abortion from an illegal provider. Surgical abortions are typically called dilation and evacuation (D&E). This will most likely be a vacuum aspiration abortion (sometimes euphemistically called menstrual extraction), in which a cannula removes the content of the uterus using suction. In procedures with properly constructed cannulas, there is no way to pass air into the uterus, and the procedure is typically very safe. Forceps may be used to clear out additional contents.
In some later term abortions, curettage may be used as well, in which a curette (similar to a scalpel) is inserted into the uterus to remove the uterine lining. This carries more risk for infection and/or laceration than suction evacuation alone, but has been used by both legal and illegal abortion providers for decades, and usually does not involve harm.
When evaluating an illegal abortion provider, keep these things in mind: do they keep paperwork (within reason)? do they use the correct medical terminology? do they ask you questions about how long you've been pregnant/conditions of your pregnancy/concerns you may have? Do they describe the procedure to you beforehand? Do they answer your questions? Do they discuss your options for pain management? Does the surgical room appear properly sterilized? Does the provider wear gloves & other PPE? Is there an exit strategy in the event that police show up?
What To Do When An Abortion Goes Wrong
Here are some normal & safe side effects that you may experience after an abortion (particularly later abortions):
vaginal bleeding (up until/through the next regular menstrual period)
abdominal cramping/pain (similar to period cramping)
fatigue (feeling more tired than usual, can last several weeks)
nausea (in the first one-two days)
vomiting (in the first day)
diarrhea (in the first day)
feelings of grief, sadness, joy, relief, regret, confusion, or no strong feelings at all - there is no abnormal emotional response to abortion
Here are some side effects that can be cause for concern:
fever more than 24 hours after the procedure
vomiting more than 24 hours after the procedure, or excessively
diarrhea more than 24 hours after the procedure, or excessively
past the first two hours following the procedure, excessive vaginal bleeding through more than two maxi pads per hour
extreme abdominal pain (significantly worse than pain you experience on a normal period) - this may be harder to determine if you have PCOS or endometriosis
persistent sensation that something is 'stuck' in the uterus/vaginal canal
You can call the miscarriage/abortion hotline for confidential advice about what to do/counseling for emotional distress.
If you are ill after your abortion, you will need to go to your nearest emergency room, as you may have an infection, remaining tissue, or laceration within the uterus. If you go to an emergency room, you can ALWAYS tell the medical providers there that you had a miscarriage. Miscarriage and intentional abortion are indistinguishable from one another. After an abortion is completed, there is no way to tell that mifepristone/misoprostol or D&E was used. It is unlikely, but you may be threatened by medical providers who tell you they can tell - this is NOT true. They have no way of telling. Do not admit to abortion in a state where it is illegal, or if you do not want to.
It is possible you will find yourself in a situation where medical providers are hostile to you/suspicious that you received an abortion. In this case, you may find it helpful to refer to the pregnancy as "the baby," and present more distressed than you may actually be in order to garner more sympathy.
You will likely be treated with more suspicion if you are single, have previously had a (legal, documented abortion), or are openly/visibly trans. Whenever possible, bring a trusted friend to act as your medical advocate, to corroborate your story of unexpected miscarriage, and to help you navigate the experience if you lose lucidity.
Most serious injury and death related to abortion happens to those who don't go to the hospital when they experience symptoms of infection. It is important to get emergency care if you need it! You will most likely be okay, and you never have to tell anyone that you had an abortion, doctors included.
Other Notes
The FDA has recently approved an over-the-counter birth control pill, the O-Pill, which can be purchased without a prescription. Many Planned Parenthoods provide contraceptives such as condoms, spermicide, and oral birth control for free or at low cost, even in places where abortion is illegal. Plan B is legal in all 50 states , D.C., and Puerto Rico (although partially restricted in Louisiana), and is most effective in 24 hours after having sex. There is some research suggesting it is less effective for people who weigh 165lbs or more. Ella (Ulipristal) is another emergency contraceptive option, but requires a prescription. It can be taken up to five days after having sex. It is less effective in people who weight 195lbs or more.
Odds are high that a local reproductive justice organization near you needs volunteers/members/donors, so look into it BEFORE you need it. It takes a village.
