butch appreciation

What does it mean to be "butch," do you think? The term is ill-defined, and internet scouring often leads to the same conclusion that it is an identity one adopts.

Butchness is not defined by any specific body type or fashion sense. Like masculinity, it can be a very fluid concept. Yet something about the flippantness with which "butch" as a descriptor is tossed around online by fandoms feels, to me, a bit insulting. To so frivolously tag any woman with heteronormative masculine qualities (be it chiseled abs or a buzz cut) as "butch" inadvertently erases so much meaning and history —— and the experiences of trans men.

So what does it mean, to be butch? I think it can mean whatever you want it to. But as with any label, a deeper exploration of its roots and historical significance should be warranted.

Leslie Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues, inspired by her own life experiences, explores the intersectionality of gender and class as it pertains to lead character Jess Goldberg's identity as a stone butch. For nonbinary or transmascs, Jess' struggles her gender and body can offer a somber comfort in how well it encapsulates dysmorphia. The book is not an easy read but does provide a valuable lesson in how we are shaped by our oft-painful lives, and how the traumas inflicted upon us can greatly shape our perceptions of gender and sexuality.

Ultimately, the book imparts upon readers the importance of community, coalition, and advocacy; a message I believe we can all get behind.
