Note, I am finding these threads on the twitter feeds of ICU nurses who are now dreading the horrors that Roe falling will bring to their hospitals. This, on top of the horrors that they’ve seen and continue to see because of the pandemic. They were already exhausted and hanging by a thread.

tw rape
i keep thinking about how Robin Hobb deals with the various rapes in The Liveship Traders. i know some would consider the books “problematic” or whatever because of Kennit still being considered a hero by some in the end. but i have to recognise the harsh realism of that. and since we have it all from Althea’s point of view also, i just, i just get it. and she also wrote everything from Kennit’s point of view. and Paragon’s.
their intermingling story really tells of three different ways to deal with a trauma so horrible as rape. Paragon goes mad at first, Kennit gradually becomes the abuser because of the force of his denial, and Althea is consumed with endless rage. And Serilla, with endless fear. But both Althea and Serilla manage to overcome, first by admitting what was done to them, then by shedding their sense of guilt (and Paragon too). the female characters who’ve been raped (or nearly raped like Malta) have to go on, and they do, and i think it’s a sort of hopeful message too. and Kennit could have as well. the charm tells him so, and he encourages Kennit to put his faith in Etta and Wintrow because he knows they are his way out. but Kennit fails utterly. Althea and Serilla and Paragon, however, find a way to move on. it’s very realistic that way. like Althea’s first rape. it happens. it happens all the time and we move on and we live on. and i think it’s very good of Mistress Hobb to have integrated that harsh truth into her fantasy tale.
in addition to that, she gave us a myriad of rapists. yes, it can be just anyone. it’s the lowlife from Paragon’s crew but also the dashing youth from the Vivacia and it’s also Kennit Ludluck, king of the pirate isles, and raped child. and when Althea fears that Brashen will turn on her because he’s stronger than her and he could, he just could do it…… yeah i felt that. i’d never seen rape being dealt with in such an extensive way, from all the points of view posible, especially not in the fantasy genre. Hobb’s talent with character building really shines in this trilogy.
