Groundhog Day

It’s that time again! That’s right, it’s time to gaze towards the state of Pennsylvania and watch a little groundhog scurry out of its den. Because he’s being released to let the masses know when to expect a break in winter weather and how soon they will see the spring breezes flow.

A groundhog? Predicting the weather? That’s right!

Oh come on now, stop laughing. It’s tradition. It’s fun and who doesn’t feel the need for a little fun this far into winter? Come on. It’s time to read a little bit and learn something interesting about this enduring custom. Who knows? By the end of this chat, it’s likely that many more people will be anxiously counting down the days until the next Groundhog Day!

History of Groundhog Day

After getting its official start in 1887 in the United States of America, Groundhog Day has grown in size and scope from its rather humble beginnings. Even before it was official, though, there is record of this day being observed in the US as early as 1840 as recorded in a private diary. 1866 was the first time it was recorded in a newspaper.

The custom started out as a superstition among the Pennsylvania Dutch people, a group of German speaking immigrants who settled in the state in the 1700s and 1800s after fleeing religious persecution in Europe. After the United States made the day an official holiday, Clymer H. Freas was the editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit, a local newspaper in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania. He began to herald the town’s groundhog as the official “Groundhog Day Meteorologist”. The branding certainly worked because when most people hear about this day now, who pops to mind? That’s right! It’s Punxsutawney Phil!

What many people don’t know is that there are countless other groundhogs who take this duty of predicting the weather just as seriously as Phil. People who live in the local area can probably share loads of stories about the little weather predicting rodents.

But how accurate are these furry weather people? Well, there is some debate over that but, for dear old Phil, the professionals say that he is correct about 39% of the time. Sadly, that means he isn’t correct even 50% of the time so the odds are probably more in favor of flipping a coin than with Phil. But still, it’s a fun tradition.

Now it’s time to think about ways to enjoy the celebrations surrounding Groundhog Day!

To celebrate the day, the first order of business is to get to know its finer points. Here are some FAQs to help in getting to know more about Groundhog Day:

What exactly does Phil do and why is it important?Phil, the groundhog, doesn’t really have a big job. He simply comes out of his den and the sun does the rest.

What does it mean if he sees his shadow? And why does this mean anything? Well if he sees his shadow or not predicts the breaking of winter and the start of spring. According to custom, if the groundhog casts a shadow meaning that it must be a sunny day) then everyone is in for another six weeks of winter weather.

What if Phil doesn’t see his shadow? If Phil comes out and it is cloudy and the sun casts no shadow, then spring-like weather should be on its way. So, perhaps for some people, the trick is to wish for poor weather on Groundhog Day!

To truly celebrate, set the alarm and wake up early, gather the children, make a hearty breakfast and settle in to watch the groundhog emerge from his little nest. Today, most morning news shows will carry the process live and with much pomp and circumstance. The program usually begins around 6:30 in the morning in Pennsylvania, which is Eastern Standard Time (EST), but many TV programs will show recorded snippets of the event throughout the day.

Join the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club

The biggest fans of Groundhog Day might like to become a part of the official club. Formed in 1899, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has been encouraging groundhog enthusiasts for over a century. Just hop on the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website for more information on how to join.

Adults can join the club for a small annual fee to get access to a quarterly e-newsletter, a membership card signed by Punxsutawney Phil himself, and advanced notice of the events scheduled to happen in Punxsutawney in celebration of the next Groundhog Day.

Kids can join the Jr. Groundhog Club to receive a newsletter, certificate and membership card. An even more special club is the Phil’s Birthday Club, available only to those whose birthdays fall on February 2!

Marmot Day 

Marmot Day is a celebration of marmots, a group of large squirrel-like animals that includes groundhogs, woodchucks and ground squirrels. Even though marmots are found all over the world, from Canada to Mexico and from Russia to India, these animals don’t seem to get the attention they deserve. Marmot Day was established in 2002 to celebrate these interesting creatures.

Marmot Day festivities take many different forms. Marmot Day is an official holiday in Alaska, and it typically involves a family dinner where marmot jokes and anecdotes are shared. The city of Owosso in Michigan hosts a Marmot Day festival which offers many family activities and a marmot video contest.

Want to celebrate Marmot Day, but can’t make it to Alaska or Michigan? No problem. If you live near marmot habitats, you can go marmot watching — if not, you can try researching marmots online or buying yourself a stuffed marmot.

so to do my testing i need a state id but to get my state id i need a social security card bc i lost mine so im waiting up to 15-20 days for social security to send me a verification number in the mail so that i can apply for a new social security card and then ill have to wait for that to get to me and then i can go get my ky id and hopefully not get in trouble for taking so long to get my id changed and THEN i can schedule my ged classes. and by then ill probably have finished my math and science ged readys which is good and ummm i think thats all. itll prolly be a permit rather than a state id so i can work on learning to drive since we have a nice Not horrible car . and then ill know how to drive which will be helpful to me even if it takes me a while to actually own a car... but itd be helpful to Be able to drive yk. even if i am quite late... and once i get all of that done then thats like finally finished and then i can get a job again and start saving up money for when i am ready to move out...

Looked up a few more dangerous Aussie places both water, caves and other places so here’s a selection for perusal should you be interested.

Delta varient cave mount field national park Tasmania -Australia’s deepest cave. Yes it’s named after the covid varient.

Nullarbor caves - huge cave system under the desert

Tank cave - mount gambier. Massive underground network of flooded passages around 7010 metres long. At least 1 death

K’gari/fraser island - dingoes on land, feeding ground for young great white sharks, at least 2 species of dangerously toxic jellyfish and deadly riptides with no warning signs of lifeguards. I think it’s the largest sand island too.

Gunnamatta beach - dangerous riptides and large swells ~113 rescues a year

Mount Augustus Western Australia - warnings not to climb between November and February after a series of deaths where climbers literally cooked to death in the Aussie summer heat

Munga-thirri Simpson desert national park - takes on average 4 days to cross by vehicle. Extreme temperatures and winds kick up dust storms. Temperatures are so dangerous the whole area is off limits between 1st December and 15th March during which temps can reach 50+°C

Cahills crossing - a water crossing in the Northern Territory that is considered the most dangerous crossing in Australia due to its high water flow and the abundance of large saltwater crocodiles which have been known to attack people attempting to cross. Generally closed during the wet season as the water volume is far to dangerous the dry season allows for more opportunities to cross. Crossing at the wrong time can overturn vehicles and deaths have been recorded here.

Wittenoom Western Australia - a former mining town build to cater to a large Crocidolite mine. Crocidolite is what we know more commonly as Blue Asbestos and the fibres of this varient are very tiny making it widely considered the most dangerous asbestos varient and was found to be responsible for the most deaths and illnesses relating to asbestos exposure.

The contaminated zone is 50,000 hectares and is the largest contaminated zone in the southern hemisphere.

Mining for asbestos here began around the 1930’s and Wittenoom was established around 1950 to cater to the miners and their families.

The mine was later shut down in 1966 after rising awareness of the toxicity of asbestos though residents still remained.

In 2006 the official status of the town was removed and in 2007 it was removed from official maps and road signs. Again residents still remained. In 2013 the towns closure was finalised though again residents remained and refused to leave.

2015 had 6 residents remaining, 4 remained in 2017, 3 in 2018, 2 in 2021 and as of September 2022 nobody remained.

Even now a century after the closure this area is still massively contaminated and access is forbidden.

I….actually have a mineral specimen of Crocidolite with a bit of Tremolite (white asbestos) from this site but I keep it in a completely sealed display box well out of reach which I NEVER open. Short of finding someone selling off a piece from an old collection you can’t get specimens from this site anymore because nobody’s allowed anywhere near the place.

Fiat Lingua Top 10 for 2024

It's time for the annual Fiat Lingua rewind!

Background: I created Fiat Lingua over ten years ago with the idea that it could be something like the Rutgers Optimality Archive: A place where conlangers could post work that they wanted to showcase, or work that was in progress. We've had tons of contributions over the years, and some standout work I'm really proud of.

"A Naming Language" (November, 2016) by Jeffrey Henning: A fantastic (and short!) essay about how to create a conlang sketch (or naming language) specifically aimed at authors. The author, Jeffrey Henning, was the most important person in conlanging from the 90s through the mid-2000s before his seminal website, Langmaker.com, died.

"Down with Morphemes: The Pitfalls of Concatenative Morphology" (March, 2014) by David J. Peterson: Honestly, I'm touched. And baffled. Why this paper, published ten years ago which hasn't touched the top ten the past two years, is suddenly on it is absolutely beyond me.

"Afrihili: An African Interlanguage" (April, 2014) by William S. Annis: Afrihili is an a posteriori auxlang from the late 60s that uses Bantu languages as its source. If you haven't read about it, you must. This article took sixth place the past two years, but this year dropped to ninth!

Clocking in at over 700 pages, Jessie created a hyperlinked choose-your-own-adventure demonstration of how to evolve a naturalistic conlang. This document is nothing short of amazing.

"Grambank & Language Documentation: Zhwadi and Its Features" (June, 2023) by Jessie Peterson: Even her massive conlang-venture .pdf couldn't top her incredible resource from last year. This is a short description of how to use Grambank in conlanging with a link to a fillable Google spreadsheet any conlanger can copy and use to introduce their conlang to others. Last year this made #4 on the list, and this year it jumped two spots!

"A Conlanger's Thesaurus" (September, 2014) by William S. Annis: The king is back! Last year my article on how to create a surreal conlang took the top spot. This year? Not even in the top THIRTY! It's like it was wiped off the face of the internet! Whether it's top spot or not, though, William Annis's resource on how to create unique words with unique interrelationships and associations has proved useful to conlangers of all stripes. As a reference work, it is unparalleled in terms of usefulness modulo brevity.

I'm especially in interested in hosting personal conlang stories—stories about how or why you started to create a language, or your experience creating your own language—personal stories that are often lost, but are so vital, as there is an absolute dearth of literature about conlangers! Serena was unsure whether it the man beside her shuffling, or the dryness of her mouth, that finally woke her up, but it wasn't a pleasant feeling. The morning light was harsh against her tired eyes, and the pounding in her skull caused her to wince in discomfort. She didn't want to move, let alone speak, but he'd already began to address her, and she figured it'd be incredibly rude to dismiss someone who's bed you were in. "Is it morning?" She grumbled, reaching over the crumpled duvet covers and grabbing the first item of clothing she came across. It was clearly his, but she was too hungover to care. Serena couldn't remember the last time she'd gotten to this point, so drunk that she couldn't even recall the night before. Or the name of the person she'd ended up with, as he went on to point out. "Wow, Matthew, I'd have thought our amazing night together would've meant something to you," she managed to muster a joke, in spite of herself, because she remembered liking him. He'd offered the first drink, and she'd said yes. Happily. At least that was one habit broken. He wasn't some measly socialite using her for gossip, or money. "Serena. At least you were half right. God -- can you please get me an aspirin? I can't continue this awkward conversation when it feels like there's someone knocking a hammer against my head."

When sunlight hit his eyes, Henry groaned, rolling onto his back, the pounding in his head only moving with him. He so desperately wanted to fall back asleep, but fearing the nausea wasn't just a hangover, Henry knew he had to wake up in case he travelled. Unfortunately, he was never allowed to be irresponsible for long. Forcing his eyes open, Henry noticed for the first time that he wasn't alone. Long blonde hair splayed across his arm, and he squinted at the sleeping woman, trying to recall their night together. There were bits and pieces, enough to make him feel okay about it. He was confident they'd had a good time, even if they'd both wake to regret it. "Morning," he greeted, noticing her stirring. Fuck, what was her name? He rubbed his eyes. "So... I'm an asshole, I'm sorry. What was your name again? I swear it's S something, and now that I've said that, I'm worried that's not even close. I just can't fucking think right now."

Renegade Bookbinding Guild

Renegade Bookbinding Guild is a not-for-profit group of artists engaged in fanbinding—focusing on extremely limited edition fannish works, including fanfiction, meta, original fic, zines and other works. Most works are made in handmade editions of one or two copies. We are a transformative community connected by shared values, goals, work, and stories. We value fanfiction and fanwork in all its forms, and our fannish culture’s infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

Members work self-directed, selecting works to bind individually. We are building a physical archive book by book, zine by zine, pamphlet by pamphlet, collected on our shelves, gifted to the author, exchanged as gifts among each other or given to friends.

@armoredsuperheavy started fanbinding independently in 2018. After their guerrilla bookbinding manifestos went viral in 2020, they created the fanbinding Discord server. So began the Renegade Bindery, our digital workshop and community space.

Fish of the Day

The fish of the day today is the devils hole pupfish!

The devils hole pupfish, scientific name Cyprinodon diabolis, is an endangered fish known to live in exactly one spot, Devils hole. Devils hole is a limestone cavern with a geothermal pool found in Nye county of Nevada, and a disconnected section of Death Valley National Park. The geothermal pool keeps the water at a consistent 33 degrees Celsius all seasons, and has low dissolved oxygen amounts. The surface of water at the cave is only 72ft by 12ft, but below that the cave descends deep into the earth. Below the surface pool there is a larger cavern descending to 150 meters at its deepest before branching into a smaller tube at the bottom, the depth of which is currently unknown.1965 two teenagers went diving in the hole with scuba gear, and were never seen again,  rescue divers sent after them found a dropped flashlight, and other scuba gear but the bodies were never found. One rescue diver dropped a weighted plate that fell a full 932ft without contacting a bottom to the chamber, describing the water below him as an "infinity chamber". Later scans of the cave revealed it is at least as deep as 1,247ft, although to this day the depth is still unknown. Another well known aspect of the cave is that it can be used to determine when there are earthquakes all over the world. The water surges and has displayed unique patterns during the 2022 Mexico 7.6 magnitude earthquake, along with other strong earthquakes further from the hole. Such as: the 2012 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea, or the 2018 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia. Devils hole pupfish are known to live only in the first 80ft of the cave.

Devils hole pupfish are unique in appearance, getting only as large as an inch, and being one of few species that have no pelvic fins, however when raised in colder conditions these pupfish will regrow these appendages. As juveniles these fish are an off white color, and females retain some of this coloring in adulthood. This species has only ever been recorded with as many as 500 wild fish at its highest, hitting an all time low point of 42 fish in 2007. The more recent numbers are looking up however, and there were 263 pupfish observed in spring of 2022. The survival from egg to adulthood is small, but the likelihood with human effort that this fish will survive the test of time is high. Described as possibly the most isolated wild vertebrate species in the world. These fish live only 10-14 months, reaching sexual maturity at 8-10 weeks old and spawn year round with peaks in mid February-May, and a smaller peak in July-September. Due to the unique oxygen levels of devils hole, these fish have adapted to enter a state of tupor, similar to hibernation, where they can live anaerobically. This allows them to go without breathing for up to 2 hours, however they produce ethanol as a byproduct.

Most of the devils hole pupfish life is on the rocky outcrops of the surface waters of the cave system. Breeding, egg laying, diet, resting, and schedules surrounding the placement of the sun all depend on these rocky outcroppings of stone near the surface of the water. The diet of these fish is dependent on the rock outcroppings of the cave, as they eat anything they can find in the cave system. This includes: small freshwater crustaceans, beetles, flatworms, freshwater snails, inorganic matter made of small sections of the caves limestone, along with spirogyra and diatom algae, which grows on the rocks themselves and makes up most of the pupfish's diet. Due to their diet being mostly algae types, pupfish are incredibly susceptible to the seismic activity in the devils' hole, as it creates small tsunamis along surface water and washes away algae on the rocks, leaving them without a majority of their food source until it regrows. When these earthquakes happen the pupfish are known to flee into the deer waters of the cave until the water has stilled, and are thought to perhaps feel earthquakes before they happen, although not much research has been done on this yet.
