it's crazy to me that the only way you can fail the matron's test is by trusting your best friend or mother and caring for their plight. but not as crazy when you know they're a follower of the betrayer and a ruidusborn though, right?
imogen sounds so defeated when she asked if trusting her mother was bad. then imogen repeating the same again to the hells with this really helpless look. because the matron, a near-omniscient being, has written off her mother as something too rotten to be trusted.
"you know your mother best in the end" the way that does not change the fact that YOU have viewed her mother in the worst light. it's killing me but i have to love the consistent portrayal of the holy, at every level of the realm, putting the burden on others to find goodness or redemption in ruidusborns. but until proven otherwise they are personally fine with reducing ruidusborns to caricatures of an evil turncoat.
the matron of ravens was not there when the gods, despite luz/sarenrae's insistence to give it a chance, decided to distrust the rotten fruit and plucked it right off from its tree, setting off their own end.

I think that Orym actually does doubt Imogen, but this isn't a thing that is unique to Imogen. Orym doubts all of them to an extent, because paranoia is something he struggles with (and this is continuously reinforced by the story).
It's not a 'good' thing that he should never get over, nor is it an immoral character flaw that proves he actually hates Imogen. However it's also not something I think he can get over as long as the threat of having to possibly fight his friends exists.
"I have all the faith in the world in you guys, all of you. And I have also spent time thinking how to neutralize each of you."
#cr discourse#critical role#cr3#orym#text post#people talk about orym being hypervigilant and then deny his behaviour created out of that hypervigilance#but also see people being weird about orym due to this. you can dislike him all you want but some people are doing too much#“he hates imogen! she has given him no reason to doubt her! she is good” guys its literally just paranoia#he doesn't need a reason to doubt her nor any of them. he just does due to their uncertainty about everything#this group is impulsive. shown by their 'we are an improv group' response to the question 'whats your plan to stop the end of the world'#this is all in line with oryms usual level of slightly paranoid behaviour which is exasperated and justified by the story#he followed fearne away from camp when she wanted to do something on her own but then she was jumped and nearly killed#that paranoia was proven correct#again the next night when he slept with a sword on his back after fearnes dad threatened to come back and attack her friends#and he was attacked in his sleep (by laudna but at the time he didnt know that)#then imogen told the whole group that she and laudna considered giving into the darkness together#something that both ladies then expressed they wanted orym to take them out if they went too far#this is just a result of all of this#so i think this is a non-issue. if you like it great. if you dont then whatever#just this time it rubbed people the wrong way because of irl hang ups of people valuing their own personal privacy#the same way any kind of mind stuff 'modify memory' or psychic reading of minds without permission rubs me personally the wrong way

Respectfully, but a character can be and SHOULD BE allowed to be more than one thing without it being considered "contradictory", "retconning," or "negative character development."

there's something so funny about Fearne watching her person fail to climb two trees in a row and then deciding to do it herself and making it to the top

made the mistake of looking at the cr tag, and on one hand I understand people getting frustrated with the Hells freeing Predathos, but on the other, as usual:
This is first and foremost a dnd game, and if my DM said “this being that trumps even the gods and has a direct hand in your creation and powers is here and you can try to fuse with it/control it”, well, I’m jumping right in baybeeee

tangled anew
Orym is asleep between the two of them when Fearne leans over him and kisses Dorian for the first time.
-
It’s dark in the inn room, the air fraught with left-over tension from their close call in battle. Orym—brave, reckless man that he is—still bears the most marks of the skirmish, but none of them were left unscathed. Far too close, as usual for them. Normally Dorian would be in the middle, huddled closely to the living furnace that is Fearne and with Orym curled up into his chest. But Orym had been exhausted, too exhausted to insist on keeping eyes on the door. Fearne had made the executive decision that he would be their middle for the night, to keep him warm from both sides.
Dorian has resigned himself to a night of staring up at the ceiling until uneasy dreams of evil—both familiar and new—find him. He’d sat up not too long ago, restless but unwilling to fully leave the warmth behind.
It’s been silent for a while, save for soft breaths and the occasional shifting cloth. Dorian is sure it will stay this way until the sun rises when, suddenly, Fearne sits up with a soft sigh, tangles her hand in his shirt, and leans in.

Often I think people need to separate above table stuff and in game stuff, but here I think the opposite needs to happen.
I don't think the narrative is "Fearne NEEDS to do this" it's more "hey Ashley you're allowed to take cool stuff and take risks and it'll be okay."
Like, we all know Travis is gonna pick up the talking sword and wanna keep it, even though it's a risk, right? Why. Why do we know this about him? Think about it. He's always willing to do the risky option. Take the least tred path, because it's THERE and he trusts the story to catch him on the other side.
Ashley from day 1 being on the show, even her telling the story of that first fateful birthday party, she's TALKED about feeling insecure, not wanting to pull focus, wanting to sit back and watch the others play.
For so long, this is great, everyone just wants her to be included. (This isn't me, like, reading into this btw, these are their literal words.) People online would complain about how "wow Yasha was actually here for a full ep and she barely spoke". She's talked so much about how she often just wants to watch what's happening.
Enter Fearne, Ash is here for every single episode. She's chaotic, she's in the moment. She wants to push all the red buttons.
But does she? Does she actually push a lot of red buttons? She steals stuff, sure. But she still has this "I dunno I don't wanna be disruptive" aspect to her, her being Ashley, not Fearne.
This isn't just about "Fearne does or does not want the shard". To me, it seems it's more about telling ASHLEY, hey, you're allowed to take the big magic item. It's okay. You have it. You be in the spotlight. You get the power up. PUSH THE RED BUTTON DO IITTTTTT THE STORY WILL CATCH YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE. It's less about Fearne trusting herself and more about Ashley trusting her castmates.
Again. Don't be weird. This isn't like, reading into anything that deep haha. C'mon. Like Matt literally told her in a 4SD you gotta take risks and do the scary thing and trust it'll be okay sometimes. That's the game.

Now that Critical Role's VOD of episode 120 is out and everyone in the fandom's had a moment to breathe, simmer, and adjust to this all. I wanna do a big talk about my favourite idiot punk rock, Ashton Greymoore.
Because over these last few episodes, I've been so proud of them.
Many people have had vocal opinions on Ashton, not all of them positive either; I've seen many berate them and say they're selfish, not a team player, or that they 'don't add anything to the group'. But over the past few episodes, I feel like Ashton has been an unsung hero in the battles with Ludinus and Predathos, with their contributions, oftentimes selfless and cooperative, ending up providing the floor for others to deliver strong and impactful actions.
While Dorian and Imogen will rightfully get the lion's share of praise for their clutch moments - Dorian's Force Cage on Ludinus saving Liliana and defeating Predathos' first stage alongside Imogen's Power Word: Stun setting up Ludinus' death and defeating Predathos' second stage - Ashton's actions were often the prelude to moments that could not have succeeded without them, including these clutch moments. Their attack on Ludinus in 117 prompted the Silvery Barbs that burned up his reaction - which allowed Dorian to successfully use Force Cage without being Counterspelled, their high-damage attack on his neck hole in 118 broke Ludinus' concentration on Ravenous Void - which somehow later got credited to Chetney - which gave Imogen the freedom and mobility to get in range for Power Word: Stun, they got the Insight check whisper on Predathogen in 119 to know that Imogen was physically inside of the body and needed to be pried out - which Imogen achieved herself thanks in part to Fearne reaching her, and recently in 120 they pulled Imogen out of Predathos' maw, abandoning the Hammer synonymous with their character (to the point that Keyleth titled them the 'Paradox Hammer') to prioritize saving their friend, which - following Dorian's healing - gave her the chance to use the Ring of Remembrance for the finishing Meteor Swarm. Not to mention all the other damage they dealt and tanked throughout the four fights, the passive d4 bonuses and advantage they gave the party (almost acting partly as a secondary paladin or a tertiary bard) to buff their damage and saving throws, and accepting the risk of disintegration when Laudna used their Hammer's spell splitter - which forced Predathos to use its final Legendary Resistance.
The Disintegrate moment itself was tense because we all know that Ashton is high among the Hells who would sacrifice themselves to save the group - a mentality most of the Hells likely shared in this fight - but fortunately they don't have to, they'll never have to, and they gained something just as if not more valuable than a heroic sacrifice: they get to live. The person who before meeting these chucklefucks believed they'd likely die face-down in a ditch in some backwater alley and thrown into an unmarked grave AT BEST gets to live, and the people that mean most to them get to live thanks to their efforts, their successes. And that's the most important part; for all the times they couldn't help or save someone because they were unconscious or out of reach, for all the times they let their imposter syndrome tell them they're just a fuckup undeserving of trust, praise, or love, and for every fear they had that one day they'd mess up and this new family of theirs will abandon them like the Nobodies did, this time they were there standing beside their people to the very end - and they helped get them out alive. No mistakes, no carelessness, and no-one left behind.
For that, I am proud of Ashton Greymoore; not Bells Hells' Weapon but their Helm, not a Blunt Instrument but a Protector, and not a Hero who needs to do 'what needs to be done' but a Friend who is saving their people no matter the odds. Under all the hardened and rugged exterior that has always been who Ashton is - the perfectly flawed character they are.
#*slams fist* SAVIOUR OF THE BROKEN THE BEATEN AND THE DAMNED!#And it's not to say that Ashton's the only one that deserves credit because they all do but I'm giving Ashton their flowers now#and yeah they're still an idiot punk rock but they keep getting to remake themselves and I'm happy for them#they still represent the philosophy associated with kintsugi - wabi-sabi: the beauty of the imperfect impermanent and incomplete#*slams fist again* you can't hide the cracks but you can embrace the repairs#they were so beaten up from these fights but nothing rings truer for Ashton than 'the body breaks but the soul refuses to die'#also by helm I mean like a helmsman not a helmet just fyi - they help steer BH; line up the enemies so the others can knock them down#I am proud of all the Hells too...mostly - Braius still needs to regain their trust - but everyone did their part to keep everyone alive#We all know that Tal has - or at least puts on - a level of detachment with their PCs in case they die but I'm so relieved they didn't#Ashley was relieved too - just pointing it out there for Fearne 'I have Silvery Barbs from Rogue to save my rock' Calloway#you two have weird mushrooms to enjoy - also like the rest of your lives together#Still wish we got a Titan combo but I'll take them all surviving over seeing it and them dying#Seeing them set up Imogen for a clutch spell twice reminds me how underrated their bond is; which pairs with their sibling bond with Laudna#There's still the matter of Vassalheim and the Gods ofc but this is not the first firing squad BH has stood before this campaign#but I do feel like the fighting needs to be over for the campaign - as in no more combat - lest it devalues Predathos as a final boss#Ludie2/Twodinus is still out there though ¬_¬ maybe he'll be a one shot returner like Delilah Trent and Uk'otoa (Uk'otoaaa)#I do hope the collapse of the core doesn't fully destroy Ruidus either - Gaz Tomo the Myceit and the Bormodo kinda live there#we also need to know what happened to Fy'ra Morrighan Deanna FRIDA Prism and Deni$e - where are they? Did they fight?#*slams fist a third time for no reason* my hand hurts now#critical role#cr spoilers#c3e120#ashton greymoore#bells hells#ludinus da'leth#imogen temult#laudna#predathos#dorian storm

Day 500
Wow, day 500. How insane is that?? Time has seriously slipped away from me and as I write this it's almost day 501.
These past 100 days have been insane. We got noticed by Ashley on two different occasions, including a 300+ post liking spree on Christmas eve! Talk about best gift ever.
If I can be real for a minute here, I've been falling out of my hyperfixation with CR a bit, but seeing how excited you all are on this blog definitely makes me feel better. I love how much you all love Ashley and I'm so happy I get to bring you joy.
I just hit 1.05k iirc, which is just so cool. I'd love to see 1.1k by my birthday in March!! I'm so proud of this little community I've somehow managed to build. Thank you all.

What happens when your body very quickly and permanently changes and you don’t have time to grieve the loss before accepting the wonderful new? aka I wanted the besties to talk and comfort each other so here’s this (and a lil excerpt):
“Orym” the gentle voice of Fearne came through the door.
“Come in Fearnie”
The door slowly creaked open and in came Fearne holding Little Mister, no longer in her fully elemental form, but still different. Hair of fire, horns crackling magma, finger tips burning, and tears slowly streaming down her face.
Orym sprang up to meet her “Fearnie you’re crying.”
“Can I sleep in here tonight?”
“Of course Fearne always”
He tentatively reached for her hand, afraid of being burned, and she quickly gripped his with a certainty that said I won’t hurt you I will never hurt you and placed a warm kiss on his forehead.

anyway fearne was sexy to actually ask liliana the question of when "this" started for her, trying to get liliana to remember and consider what. happened. to her to make her start to believe it all.
