One of my biggest pet peeves is the assumption that something has to be sad for it to be tragic.
I've always been a big believer of the 'Apollo has an awful love life'/'Apollo is plain unlucky with love' line of thinking but it does bother me that the general reasoning for that statement is given to the concept of 'Apollo is somehow undesireable and thus rejected' (Cassandra/Daphne/Marpessa) or 'his lovers die young and thus their love is unfulfilled' (Cyparissus/Hyacinthus/Coronis). I personally think that's a very unfortunate way of looking at things - not only because it neglects the many perfectly cordial entanglements and affairs Apollo has had, both mortal and divine - but because it presents a very shallow interpretation of the concepts of love and loss and how loss affects people.
Apollo can still grieve lovers that have a long, healthy life. The inherent tragedy of an immortal who knows his lovers and children will die and cannot stop it does not stop being tragic simply because those lovers and children live long, fulfilled lives. The inherent tragedy of loss does not stop being tragic simply because someone knows better than to mourn something that was always going to end.
What is tragic is not that Apollo loves and loses but that loss itself follows him. Apollo does not love with the distance of an immortal, he does not have affairs and then leaves never to listen to their prayers again. He does not have offspring and then abandon them to their trials only to appear when it is time to lead them to their destinies. He raises his young, he protects the mothers of his children, he blesses the households that have his favour and multiplies their flocks that they may never go hungry. He educates his sons, he adorns his daughters and even in wrath he is quick to come to his senses and regret the punishments he doles out.
Apollo loves. And like mortals, there will always be some part of him that wishes to protect the objects of his affections. Apollo, however, is also an emissary of Fate. He knows that the fate of all mortal things is death. He knows that to love a mortal is to accept that eventually he will have to bury them. There is no illusion of forever, there is no fantasy where he fights against the nature of living things and shields his beloveds from death. Apollo loves and because of that love, he also accepts.
And that, while beautiful, is also tragic.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#greek mythology#apollo#Listen man#I think there's something extremely beautiful about Apollo's affairs#Yes I know that Ares also loves and cares for his daughters but this isn't about him#There's just something about the way that Apollo put his all into it every single time#To the point that even when he does know better he still fights because of the strength of his love#The Iliad to me will always be a love story#Yes Achilles' wrath is said to come from his overwhelming feelings towards Patroclus#but what Achilles does has nothing to do with grief or love#By the end of everything Achilles forsook that love which ought to have defined his actions based on what he was saying#and warped it into a weapon meant to satisfy the void left by his loss#Apollo though - I am always taken aback by the sheer weight of his love#towards not only Hektor but towards all of Troy in the Iliad#And how he is very careful to balance that love and all the ways he wishes he could fight against their inevitably end#with his duties as one who is both aware of the impending end and whose position in the war#has put him in opposition with his elders#That delicate balance between a love so powerful that he is willing to take on the full weight of Athena and Hera's wrath#and an understanding that the battle he fights is not for victory but simply because for love's sake#How could you not think of that as beautiful and awesome and so achingly tragic#I feel the same about both Asclepius' and Actaeon's deaths#Apollo loved BOTH of his sons - Asclepius and Aristaeus - so so SO much#He was so incredibly proud of them both and delighted immensely in the both of their victories and talents#And so when Asclepius dies and it is by his own father's hand - I have always found his act of wrath so fascinating#Honestly this could be its own separate post - but the fact that Apollo does not beg Zeus to reconsider or to bring Asclepius back#when Apollo has made cases for lenience on things like that before speaks of a level of understanding from Apollo that Asclepius was always#going to die because of his pushing of the boundary between life and death#so he doesn't bother trying to reason with Zeus or plea his grief - instead going directly to destroying something important to Zeus

I know I’m not the first person to say this but godddd Hawkfrost being the father of the three would have worked so much better for the story on every level… Leafpool and Squirrelflight having even more reason to keep the secret bc that guy tried to kill their dad/Thunderclan’s leader! Brambleclaw unknowingly raising the children of the murderous half-brother he killed… Lionblaze training with Hawkfrost in hell… the parallels between Brambleclaw killing Hawkfrost at the river and Hollyleaf killing Ashfur at the river… Hawkfrost’s ghost eventually killing Hollyleaf!! Mothwing stealing her pos brother’s girlfriend… we could have had it all

Alright bestie I’m on that shit again
So yandere Superman, right? Like obviously your fucked. The only other yandere in existence that might just be able to keep you from him is Batman, but even then he’d probably sooner work together just to ensure your safety- but that’s a prompt for another day.
Back to yan Superman, imagine you’re his darling and he is “keeping you safe”. But one day, you get snatched up by some organization that wants to use you as leverage or some shit, but you are just sobbing in relief at maybe being free- only to have Superman show up and do some not so super things to everyone who “stole” you
There are just so many casually horrifying things about Superman that people don't realize until you start like digging into his lore. "Oh he's super strong and a super fast flyer" actually he can do basically anything at those super speeds to the point he can literally even PROCESS THOUGHTS at near light-speed which means he has Absolutely Terrifying reaction times and can make plans and schemes on a dime, which, you know, can be even better utilized by him being intelligent. He has natural invulnerability so if you throw a punch at him too hard you could literally shatter the bones in your hand and he can't even control that, like you could literally hurt yourself with him on accident! He can see across INSANE DISTANCES and his x-ray vision doesn't have like a set range so he could do anything from, peep inside buildings to spy on you, to looking under your clothing for any bruises or injuries or even self harm marks, to peeking behind your hero disguise to learn your true identity, to seeing if there's anything inside your stomach and seeing if you're eating properly. Like jesus christ he literally found out Lois was pregnant from waking up one morning and suddenly hearing the heartbeat of the FETUS, there's literally nothing from him pulling that stereotypical "I know you're nervous or lying or afraid because I can literally hear your heartbeat increase" scary bullshit
And let's talk about Lois for a sec because my god her death was literally what kicked off the Injustice timeline? And there are other forms of Superman media where she just straight up dies naturally of cancer! Sure we could take the easy way and say "in this au Lois never existed or was just Clark's friend and he loved YOU" (which is my preferred default tbh bc, no competition for Reader lol) but I mean if you're going for that angst, that real whump, a yandere Clark Kent that just lost his wife/unborn child to either the Injustice incident or cancer, now overcome with grief? And in those cancer timelines they usually already have a son, Jonathan, and sometimes Jordan, and here's Clark thinking, well, his boy needs a mother, and he's got these weird feelings for you, and lil Jonny clearly has affection for you, maybe bring a bit of a platonic yan himself who sees you as either a big sister or even a secondary mom, so... be his wife maybe?
Like my god if Reader somehow helped him through the grief of losing Lois and managed to avoid "fully activating" Superman's anime villain arc, like he's going full fascist in the Injustice 2 Bad Ending, then some shit DEFINITELY goes down when Reader gets taken away. It just reactivates all his trauma. No! He can't lose anyone else! Jonathan can't lose anyone else! You're not just someone he loves, you're his FRIEND!
You're just huddled in whatever cell you've been kept in with your black eyes and bruises and knuckles bloodied from trying to fight back when you hear Clark's voice and you look up with excitement that just falls immediately off your face because holy shit did he just unlock that thumbprint scanner with a severed arm, and suddenly you're realizing there are other shades of red on his costume and dripping from his fingers
I can only imagine like, ngl I considered a sequel to my fic Doubt where Reader escapes the manor and runs into Supernan as the only other person who can protect you, so here we would have the inverse: you're the only one who knows about Clark's increasing instability and, while you still have your own freedom and autonomy, try to speak to Bruce about it, and now you have Batman Vs Superman: Competing For Your Heart Edition. I can only imagine what sort of unhinged reactions there would be if you think you've got Batman alone and you're beginning to cry all "Bruce I'm really worried about Clark, he isn't acting like himself, there's something wrong with him" and. Clark is like literally using his x-ray vision to read lips through the walls if he can't use his super hearing to outright eavesdrop.
Of course as you suggested, I'm always a slut for ideas with"oh shit I ran to this guy to help me and he's ALSO crazy, now they're teaming up and I'm in some weird shared/poly situation with TWO nutjobs". Lmao you go to Bruce concerned about Kal and Bruce goes to confront him and Clark just drops "did you know Y/N has been hiding self harm cuts under their hero suit also wow they smoke HELLA weed and im worried about their lungs and all the stuff they do when they're alone that no one else knows about 🥺" and suddenly here's Bruce " thanks i hate this actually :)" and there's a scheme concted to spy on you or move you elsewhere.
I've even thought of "Reader oh nooOoooOo, that, giant monster or villain attack or whatever also coincidentally destroyed your shitty little apartment complex? You mean Clark 'accidently' got sent flying into your building or smacked some giant creature into it and now you don't have a place to live? And you're broke too? Oh no 🥺 Well, BATMAN has this nice big house with lots of room in for you to stay toooootally 'temporarily', we PROMISE uwu"
Batman is the one who can put a tracking chip injected into your skin or even disguised as a filling in one of your teeth, and Superman is the one who can zoom off to rescue you/retrieve you "faster than a speeding bullet". I think one of the only people who could bring them down together at that point would be like. Fucking DARKSEID and, Jesus no, you definitely don't want HIM treating you as a pet 😭 the evil Batman that was brainwashed by him in the Apokolips War movie was scary enough (and scary HOT, lmao, let him keep me as some sort of prize and the only luxury Darkseid will allow him as a reward for his obedience. Lord Batman goes from having a meeting talking about like enslaving people to returning to his quarters and railing tf outta you because he's still holding onto some slim vestiges of humanity where he cares about you but also using you as his personal anti stress fuck toy)
#yandere superman#yandere batman#yandere dc#i got a draft whee damian and jon like you and introduce you to their fathers#and suddenly stalking you becomes a family affair#the boys walk you home and jon lies about having to pee so damian can plant bugs while youre distracted#the boys going back to their fathers and telling them all of your personal business#'yeah dad when she was at work i used my xray vision and saw her creepy manager grope her in the walk in'#suddenly your small little privately owned cafe was just bought out by wayne enterprises and your boss is fired or goes missing#maybe Bruce gets you a job st Wayne tech bc hes been following you as batman and he doesnt like you working third ahift#lmao heres hoping i actually finish it wven though im not quite sure where to go w it yet#but like its literally over 8 pages at least so. obviously some sort of creative juices are flowing#yandere stuff#sinprompts#at this point i cant promise shit bc my emotions and motivation are waaaaaacky

Hanahaki Disease.
When Jaskier was young, he was cursed. That’s would he had been told. Any form of unrequited love would cause him to cough up Flower Petal. Not only that, eventually, the curse would be over, and Jaskier would turn into trees and flowers.
So Jaskier had been told not to fall in love. Which was a lot harder said than done. As Jaskier found himself falling in Love with everyone. It was never too bad. Only a few flowers.
Then came Geralt. Jaskier fell in love, and he fell in love fast and hard with the Witcher. Sometimes, it only felt like falling with Geralt.
Of course, Geralt did seem to return his feelings, and so the petals kept coming up. But Jaskier hid them; he could die happy if it were with Geralt.
Geralt left him on the mountain, but the petals didn’t stop.
Sometime Later, Jaskier found himself again with Geralt, this time in Kear Morhen with the Ciri, Yennefer and the rest of Geralt’s family. Now, Jaskier knew he didn’t belong; if he did, the petals would have stopped. But at least Geralt was trying to be nicer to him.
One morning, Jaskier awoke to find bark on his legs, and he knew his end was coming

After that last ask about Cromwell’s involvement, I’m really curious how you’d characterise Mary’s relationship with him overall?
Because I’ve seen some historians suggest things were - on the whole - more conciliatory, whilst others have seen it as just another bullying minister in a line of them for Mary.
And yeah I’m just interested in how you’d describe it!
The "bullying minister" is more in line with some older pop history, like Carolly Erickson, but Mary's biographers do tend to take a more cynical view...
Chapuys was informed he must persuade Mary to sign the articles [...] The ambassador, his tongue firmly in his cheek, responded that he thought Mary would take more notice of Cromwell, who was like a second father to her. In fact, Cromwell was more like a wicked uncle. He sent Mary a letter that was both uncompromising and threatening. [...] The prospect of abandonment by Cromwell [...] finally broke Mary's resolve.
Her correspondence with him after her capitulation was cordial and warm. But I don't think she would've forgotten that he promoted the cause of her mother's demotion, any more than she would've forgotten for anyone else. She's aware that he's the most influential person with her father at this point, that's why she uses him as an intermediary on matters of finances and such in the coming year(s).
Like her relationship with her second stepmother, I think it's important to consider the self-fashioning: she knows everything she writes will be relayed to her father.
Mary sent Cromwell a letter of thanks in effecting her reconciliation. Surprisingly, she did not take up the offer obviously made by either letter or messenger for new clothes. She told him she had written to her father saying she required no more clothes than her father's favour.
Again, we know she'll be asking Cromwell to ask Henry to send her more funds later in the year, so this could suggest various possibilities...1) she wasn't so destitute of clothes during AB's reign as Chapuys suggested, and/or 2) Henry hasn't been quite so generous absent of her influence as Chapuys has suggested, so she's hedging on asking for anything further than what has been granted on the hope it will be offered and that she doesn't have to later be in the position of 'beggar', and/or 3) she's being intentionally self-abasing/humble as a matter of self-fashioning (not necessarily 'sincerely' thankful).
Mary does thank him for his kindness to her servant and her mother's. But I don't necessarily think this means their relationship was completely beneficial to Mary's well-being...it's likely that as Cromwell is "stringing Chapuys along", he's likewise doing the same to Mary, as late as August that year still telling him that Henry will name her heir to the throne. Charles V seemed to take a more realistic view, even from farther away: "he doubted Cromwell's sincerity in promoting either Mary's marriage to Dom Luis or her restoration the succession".
There's often an anachronism of Mary's life 1536- being 'fairly tranquil'. But what follows is the execution of her chamberlain in connection to the Pilgrimage, and Cromwell was very active in carrying out Henry's will in regards to reprisals for that rebellion. We don't know what she felt about that, nor how much blame she felt was due, and to whom. Maybe she believed, underneath all the courtly politesse towards Cromwell, that much like AB, he was a corrupting influence on her father...or, maybe not. Later on, he's extremely active in the reprisals of the "Exeter Conspiracy", which led to the arrests and executions of many of her supporters and friends. How did she feel about Cromwell's role in this? Again, this is all speculation, but I don't necessarily, personally believe her only emotion towards Cromwell was gratitude.
Elizabeth Seymour asked her to be godmother to her son, but it's hard to know how suggestive that is of Mary being an ally /of an affinity/friendly with the Cromwells, and/or the Seymours. It might also just have been reflective of an honour that Elizabeth wanted conferred on her son; her son was the King's nephew-in-law, it would've been entirely appropriate for his daughter to be his godmother as well, reifying that royal connection.
Cromwell warned Mary (or took her to task, depending on your view) that her lodging foreigners in her household without permission from Henry made her suspect to him. He also instructed her to meet Charles V's ambassadors in 1538, and then to inform him exactly what they had said. Mary seems to have perhaps 'technically' (what did they say, vs what did they write) followed his instructions, but ultimately defied them (she either spoke in a language her ladies did not know, or slipped them a letter apprising them of 'secret matters'). He later sent instructions to 'sound Cleves in regard to a marriage for Mary with the Duke'.
In 1540, Mary thanked him again for looking after her own interests. It was to be the last time she did so. These are Melita Thomas' last remarks on the subject:
From Mary's letters to Cromwell, and the presents exchanged between them, we can infer that they were personally on good terms [...] Mary never sought to undermine or circumvent his power with Henry. It is impossible to know whether, secretly, she hated him as the author of the destruction of papal authority, and the Dissolution of the Monasteries, or whether she was sincerelly grateful to him for effecting the reconciliation with Henry. [...]
Interesting, but I don't think 1) Mary had enough power or influence to undermine or circumvent Cromwell's power, even had she wanted to, and 2) "sincere hatred" and "sincere gratitude" are not mutually exclusive emotions, necessarily. Even if it was more the former, she would have been disabused on the notion (if she held it), that he was the sole influence responsible for the destruction of what/those she held dear (much like she was in 1536); because days after Cromwell's execution, Dr Abell, her mother's chaplain and supporter, and her own former tutor and supporter, Dr Fetherstone, were executed.
#anon#mary expressed her gratitude to cromwell several times. but we can't see inside somebody's mind or heart#cromwell was not just anyone; he was the most powerful councilor at court and the most direct connection to her father she had#it was in her interest to flatter/praise him#it was in her interest to reinforce his role as her intermediary#and it's likely cromwell's promotion of mary's affairs was also#at least partially motivated by self-interest. he believed a good anglo-imperial relationship#was necessary to maintaining a profitable mercantile trade network in england

Day 3: Asclepius
Interpretation notes and trivia under the cut!!
Woo boy, this guy was another difficult character to settle on both a design and an interpretation for! Asclepius tends to have two big schools of thought for his tale, either he's the tragic doctor who resorted to illicit methods in order to save his patients or he's a strict scientist who was so skilled at his art that his resuscitations were called magic but were just science. I don't actually mind either interpretation, but due to the way I personally see Coronis and the way I chose to interpret Asclepius' birth story, I chose to focus on a different facet of Asclepius; Asclepius the family man. The theme of geneology and the inheritance of 'curses' through blood and birth is one that permeates this work and Asclepius, in a lot of ways, has not only inherited both his mother and father's banes but his actions and talents create new ones for his children. Throughout this, and all the many messy crimes Asclepius will commit in the name of what he thinks is necessary and right, he will willfully ignore the warning signs staring him dead in his face screaming that he will leave the burden of his work to his children and it will be easy. After all, Asclepius has made a career out of ignoring his own father's warnings and cautions, what are a few more red flags to ignore?
Less of a character note and more of a personal thing, but for a very long time I used his teenaged design when sketching out scenes and ideas but after tidying up my timeline, I realised that he would be an older man throughout the events of the story!! Since he's properly mortal, he would have to look his age and while that was slightly intimidating since I've not drawn many older characters, it also made me very excited since characters in the 40+ age range are rarely protagonists of these sorts of adventure/fantasy stories and working in the physical differences between him and his brothers was extremely fun!
Some fun trivia:
Youngest of Apollo's children currently alive and kicking. Maybe it was because Apollo so intensely regretted the way he dealt with Coronis but he doted endlessly on Asclepius and essentially personally oversaw his education and training. Because of this, Asclepius, without a doubt, is the child with the best relationship with Apollo between the brothers and believes unfalteringly in his father even if they have many practical and philosophical differences.
Has a bit of a sixth sense when it comes to necromancy and communing with the dead and spirits beneath the earth. Because he was rescued from the torch of death when he was babe, he has retained a connection with the chthonic. While he cannot exactly see figures like Thanatos or Hermes, he can certainly sense when they are afoot. Is very aware that Thanatos cannot stand him and expects to be taken by Ker when he does finally die.
Always keeps gold coins on him on the off chance he is spontaneously struck down while doing research or healing some previously unhealable disease. His father, upon realising that his warnings would be thoroughly ignored, pleaded for him to do at least that since after Asclepius is dead, Apollo would be unable to intercede for him.
Happily married and has four children! His eldest Machaon chose to follow his footsteps and became a gifted surgeon in his own right while his second eldest Iaso chose to follow her mother's footsteps and become more of a nurse than a doctor. He's endlessly proud of all of his children and hopes his research makes the world a better place for them.
Was recognised by Apollo at 15 and became Doctor Laureate at 17. Lost said laurels at 22 after he revived his second corpse from the dead and since then has been on a strict probation when practicing his medicine. Has a mark on his left wrist that will fill itself out if he commits such an atrocity again and then he will be marked for death and supposedly tormented until he forfeits his soul.
On very good terms with Orpheus and the two often work together and catch up when they happen to meet up while travelling. Never knew Eurydice but he gets the feeling that he would've really liked her.
Despite being a son of Apollo, has absolutely zero musical talent and cannot dance. He can't maintain his hair either and would've cut it multiple times over if Apollo himself didn't stop him and chastise him for even thinking about such a thing. Epione does his hair. The little braids in his beard are courtesy of the twins Hygiea and Panacea who enjoy putting little braids in anything they can get their hands on.
Doesn't resemble his father or his mother actually! The relative he resembles most is his paternal grandfather Zeus, a fact that gives his wife endless grief because his hair is thick but not curly, a trait she covets. Asclepius having thick body and facial hair was also very awkward considering Apollo is incapable of growing body hair and, for a while, his lack of curls and cascade of body hair when Asclepius started puberty made Apollo doubt whether Asclepius was truly his or if he had saved Ischys' child instead.
Has zero self preservation and will hunt monsters and creatures for their blood, teeth, claws and hides for his medicines. Like his father, he has a personal 'wall of horrors' where he stores everything from gorgon blood to pegasus feathers to hydra venom. Sometimes gods in the guise of men will simply give him precious materials because they know Asclepius is the one who will take their unsolveable cases in the face of disaster. It is a very risky exchange and has only barely skirted by Zeus' notice because actual money hasn't been exchanged (yet).
Preferred weapon is the scalpel and doesn't like fighting humans. Has a fire-retardant mantle made from chimera skin Apollo gave him when he was a child that doubles as a very good shield in a pinch.
Favourite colour is withy purple and his favourite food is goat butter spread on bread and topped with celery, tomatoes and olive oil. Has a lot of snake themed jewellry that he's passed on to his son because he thinks they're too gaudy for his old self to be wearing.
#ginger draws#pursuing daybreak posting#the way I want to talk about Asclepius and Artemis but CAN'T because that'll inevitably lead to talking about Hippolytus??#and that is BEEG spoiler nonsense because Hippolytus' whole affair plays out so much differently here than in myth#anyway Asclepius is fun - a fun guy#if I had to describe his personality in a word it would be dangerous#Dangerous in the kind of way you can only be if you're tempting fate and have a family tbqh#Asclepius is well meaning but because he's gotten away with flouting rules for so long he has the confidence#of a man who thinks he'll always get away with it even after Apollo's warned him so many times#He also has what I affectionately call “Dad-blindness”#All of his brothers have gone through it - that phase where they're super disillusioned with Apollo as a father because they haven't seen#how ruthless and cold he can be as a god#most of Apollo's mortal children don't live long enough to actually get disillusioned? but Aristaeus and Orpheus very much#have a much more complicated view of their father than Asclepius' “Apollo will always protect me because he's my father” view#no one tell him#asclepius#greek mythology#october art challenge

Harding: So why’d you become a Grey Warden Davrin?
Davrin: I wanted to feel like I had purpose, Wardens gave me that :)
Harding: Alright! What about you Rook?
Therése, who murdered her father, committed arson and then killed her father’s wife: Oh you know. It was just another Tuesday.
#okay i’ll put the lore here in the tags because i need you guys to know what i did to make therése unwel#*unwell#so therése is from a minor noble house in starkhaven#she grew up being really close to her mom#and also learned her warrior training through her mom!#she was also close to her dad and went hunting with him often#when therése was 17 her mom got assassinated by what she and her siblings assumed was a bitter rival house#but they couldnt quite figure out. why#her dad remarried and about 2 years of that therése found out her father was having an affair with his now wife while during his marriage#to therése’s mom. and because therése doesnt Know how to handle emotions healthily at this point she becomes pissed#so when she and dear old dad go hunting the week after she kills him#then burns down the hunting cabin they were staying in#then kills her step mother#and then her siblings (reasonably) turn her in#and as punishment she gets sent to the gallows#but one of the spectators was a warden and was like. we need recruits always give her to us#and they did and now she’s a warden. Yay!#this is why she is normal#roscoe rambles#<- real bad this time#oc: therése thorne

do y’all ever think about how rhaenyra’s ‘ point of no return’ was seeking to destroy a young girl for the perceived sins of a grown man
#like and I say perceived because whether you do or don’t believe in the affair with nettles ( I personally don’t ) rhaenyra herself did and#and the mention of it led to her ordering nettles’ execution#and k do think she regretted it almost immediately and not only because#I not k#not only because it inevitably led to daemon’s death#she never wanted to be that sort of person she never wanted to be apart of the same system that broke her that did punish her for the#perceived wrongdoing of her father in naming her heir to the iron throne#I DON’T think she was motivated by jealousy I think she was motivated by fear of what two dragons abandoning her cause would mean for it#with aemond and daeron and Hugh and ulf still out there#at that point she doesn’t think she can trust Addam and aside from hers and joffrey’s#daemon and nettles’ dragons are the only ones she really has#I think the mention of them having a baby together rubbed salt in the wound 😭#and made it even more of an emotional response 😭#like and I say all of this to explain her actions never to excuse them because what she did to nettles was inexcusable#it’ll always be inexcusable like regardless of her reasoning she still did it
