market update // december 14th

not too much happened today except i had an epiphany. my plant labels weren't selling a whole lot before, and i was like ok cool whatever. is what it is, just keep offering as an add-on item.

but then i found this really neat old tool box at the thrift store, and the second i picked it up even hubs was like "that's the perfect display for your table!"

and i didn't really have a plan for it but i mean, common. rustic metal toolbox carrier thing for only $5?!

but recently i was prepping for market with this just in my craft room doing nothing and i was like, hey, plant labels fit in there...

ever since i switched displays they have been selling like hot cakes.

so pro tip for vendors: if something is not selling, just change the display 🫠

I need help!!

I am a disabled mom who is the sole income to my 3 people family. I normally work full time at my job but I am currently losing half of my hours at work. While waiting to pick up new projects to fill 20 hours of work i need to spread my stuff so that I can earn more money. If you can reblog that would be amazing! My Step 2 exam is at the end of this week 😱

I have been stressed lately because I took 2 practice exams a few weeks ago and the scores were rough, but I took Free 120 yesterday and it went pretty well so I'm feeling better. Going to keep studying and I'm looking forward to getting the exam over with!!

market update // january 4th

market has been repetitive the past month-ish. but the closer we get to spring the more that will change! i even started a countdown on my a-frame sign.

one of the 13 projects i've been hard at work on is coordinating a seed swap at the market. i'm gonna do a whole post after the event, talking about prep and feedback from the swap itself. but today was the first day we made the announcement for the event, so now it's offish and i'm more nervous than before 🫠

a fellow farmer vendor came to me and apologized because he didn't have any seeds to donate. he said he has a ton of them, but all are dated 2022 and 2023. that's not the odd part. it's when i told him that that's perfectly fine. i said a lot of the seeds that i have already received for the swap are old seeds, some even older than his. so far, all from big companies, so no biggie. i explained that the ONLY downside to a free seed swap with donations is that the germination isn't guaranteed. in which he replied 'well, what's the point? why get people disappointed if they don't grow??' and honestly, his response befuddled me so much i didn't have a quick response, and he walked away. he's a decent guy, comes off rude but one of those you know they don't actually mean it it's just their social skills are not leveled up.

i mean... i still don't know how to respond. i buy seeds that are "brand new" and don't germinate at all, but c'est la vie y'know??? oh well

also i'm taking my signage duties very seriously at the market. probably too seriously.

a first-time customer came to me today asking so many questions. turns out she got a greenhouse for christmas! meeting people at the beginning of jumping down the rabbit hole is just so much fun for me. teehee. but also saw a customer today who doesn't buy seeds but buys all the plants. she was so excited to see my countdown and we nerded over plants for a good 20 minutes.

i love market days.

Imposter

Anyone who knows his/her tomatoes can look at this photo and understand my disappointment in this specimen. The telltale sign: Not a drop of juice on the plate.

It was especially disappointing because the seller at the Cheboygan Farmers Market assured me it was Michigan-grown. Sharon mentioned later that she thought she heard the word "hothouse" muttered during that brief encounter. I did not.

I guess I should have done the math and realized that vine-ripened- in-the-dirt Michigan tomatoes are a product of August - not July.

My consolation comes in knowing the real thing is coming.
