The Best Bagels in NYC - Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
I should say the best bagels in the WORLD if they are the best in NYC. Let's be realistic - when it comes to this NYC breakfast staple, no other city can compete.
I am imagining Nigel from Miranda Priestly's office cringing - what kind of girl eats a BAGEL ? !
Sadelle's is in Soho on West Broadway and hard to miss with a big flag outside and a beautiful blue front. The stunning restaurant is brightly lit by the skylights in the ceiling of the main dining room. The bagel bar is something I have not seen before. Smoked and cured fish with boxes of caviar and stacks of bagels. The bakers are wearing white jackets and can be seen in the main dining room. The bagels are freshly baked and keep getting replenished at the bar.
My fellow diner is all stylish hipsters. I don't see a single tourist!
I order scrammed eggs with smashed potatoes, orange juice and an English breakfast tea. It is hard to choose between the poppy seed, sesame, pumpernickel but I settle for a sesame seed bagel. The bagel is the last to arrive, freshly baked and toasted with a light cream cheese on the side. I add the Baeri royal caviar. It is divine!  Best Bagels in NYC

Capri Sun - Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
I don't tan pretty. A few minutes in the afternoon sun and skin tans to a shade of grey.
After tremendous research (and trial and error), I highly recommend the following to keep the harmful sun rays at bay. Capri Sun - Fariha Ansari Javed

Oui! Monsieur Bleu | Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
Situated within the Palais de Tokyo, Monsieur Bleu has an unparalleled vantage point of the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. I first visited this beautiful establishment in the summer of 2015 while I was in Paris for the Paris Air Show. The restaurant came highly recommended and we made reservations 3 days in advance for a table on the bustling outdoor terrace.
This September, after Maison et Objet had wrapped up, two of our close family friends joined us in Paris. One morning, after a heavy breakfast, the four of us decided to walk from Saint Germain to Monsieur Bleu. The 5 kilometer walk should have taken us about an hour but we clocked in at 2 hours instead. Walking through Jardin des Tuileries, the culprits were the beautiful flowers that forced us to lower our pace and enjoy the exceptional landscaping. Oui! Monsieur Bleu

Paris Can't Wait | Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
I have two minimum guaranteed trips to Paris every year. One in the brutally cold month of January and the other in the warmth of September. Not that I am complaining! I love Paris is any weather.
I have gotten a lot of curiosity about Paris and thought it was high time to do a post.
Firstly, I go to Paris for Maison et Objet which is held bi annually (end January and mid September). My attendance at the design show is in relation to a portfolio re-startup company called Hudson.
Secondly, Paris is a wonderful city for a perspective reset. I get a personal and professional perspective reset and motivation for the next few months. Paris Can't Wait

I am Cronuts about you | Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
I first heard of Cronuts from my mother who is a Pastry Chef. Six years of training in NYC has resulted in her being way ahead of me in the "cool" game and extremely clued in to what is "hot" on the food scene.
That being said, Cronuts are the innovation of Chef Dominique Ansel and are a cross between a croissant and a doughnut. Think of biting into a donut and finding a flakey croissant inside.
Chef Ansel has been named the best Pastry Chef of 2017 by the "World's 50 Best Restaurants". His bakery styled restaurant in Soho has a line around the block to prove that the title is well deserved. He also has the best professional training between eight years at the Parisian chocolatier Fauchon and six years at Daniel Boulud’s NYC restaurant Daniel. I am Cronuts about you

Lured, Lure Fish Bar in Soho NYC | Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
Almost every New Yorker has either been to or heard of Lure Fish Bar in Soho. This institution opened its doors in 2004 at a prime location in downtown Manhattan and the food has gotten better year after year.
This summer while we stayed at the Soho Grand Hotel, we agreed to eat "healthy" and opt for fish. My husband Shiraz said he had frequented Lure before we met, and the same applied to me as well. Yet in the five years of being married we had never gone back to this restaurant together.
After several days of steak lunches and Italian dinners, we decided to meet our friends at Lure for a healthy lunch of seafood.
Located behind the Prada store on the corner of Mercer Street, the restaurant is below street level. The interior is purely nautical from the red wood panelling to the round windows. It undoubtedly feels like being on a large boat. Lure Fish Bar in Soho

Tea in Istanbul like Agatha Christie | Fariha Ansari Javed
My allegiance has changed. Because I love Agatha Christie, luxury and comfort.
The new favorite hotel for a short stay in Istanbul is definitely The Pera Palace Hotel. Built in 1892 to host the passengers traveling on the Orient Express, it is the "oldest European hotel of Turkey".
The hotel also has a museum (as it should) to showcase the history and grandeur of its heritage and the guests who stayed there like Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Allegedly, Agatha Christie wrote the book Murder on The Orient Express during her stay at the Pera Palace in Istanbul in the 1930s. Greta Garbo, Alfred Hitchcock and King Edward VIII also loved to hang out at this Art Nouveau and Oriental styled hotel. https://www.farihaansarijaved.com/home/2017/9/22/tea-in-istanbul

Peter Luger : 120 years of perfect steak | Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
Ask anyone where to get the best steak in NYC and one out of every three will mention Peter Luger in Brooklyn.
My first experience at Peter Luger was 15 years ago while working as an Underwriter at AIG. Armed with an envelope of cash (this was a cash only restaurant) we used to take a ferry ride from South Street Seaport to this Brooklyn institution. I remember waiting in an endless line at this no frills and no nonsense type of place.
Little has changed in the last 15 years besides the fact that they now accept Credit Cards and we used Uber.
We order two of the USDA Prime Dry Aged "Steak for two" between six of us with a side of creamed spinach, French fries and onion rings. Peter Luger is famous also for its very own steak sauce which is to die for. Peter Luger: 120 Years of Perfect Steak

August in NYC - Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
Glad to be back in NYC! 5 trips in 8 months have been anything but tiring. The adrenaline of doing something you love in a city that never sleeps makes it easy.
For anyone who didn't know, I decided to step in to a strategic advisory role in a portfolio company focused on home decor and design called Hudson. I am surrounded by creative people, beautiful products and get the opportunity to travel for design and art shows - what’s not to love! https://www.farihaansarijaved.com/home/2017/8/19/august-in-nyc

Beaubourg on a Hot June Afternoon | Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
To Say that the Financial District has been transformed in the last 15 years is an understatement. When I started working on 72 Wall Street, there were limited culinary options. One dollar Pizza, deli food or sandwiches were the staple for the 2 minute lunch breaks of the first-year-right-out-of-college "newbies". That obviously soon changed into fine dining as an Underwriter. But even then, it was the decision between a Steak house and an expensive Japanese restaurant all served with pristine black napkins... We wouldn't want to get lint onto the dark suits of New York.
On a hot June afternoon this year, we decided to have a casual working lunch at Beaubourg (which came highly recommended by a friend). Located in Brookfield Place and overlooking the marina, we were extremely lucky to get a table on the outside terrace to enjoy the summer sun. Beaubourg on a Hot June Afternoon

Camel Tones - Fariha Ansari Javed
When in doubt, all black and camel tones are my go to for a polished travel outfit that takes me from a working lunch in Milan to walking around art galleries in Bellagio.
This was a beautiful day in Como. After a quick breakfast meeting in Milan, we took a boat to Bellagio for a late lunch at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni.
Effortless style and comfort in this combination is guaranteed!  Camel Tones - Fariha Ansari Javed

Where did this year go ? - Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
I recently saw a post from the Soho Grand Hotel in NYC that Gillian's is closing for the rest of this year since the weather is getting cooler.
Gillian's is the outdoor rain forest styled restaurant and bar with a ton of tropical foliage and nautical decor. It is obvious that fall and winter months don't make the ambiance conducive to the restaurant's theme.
The point is - where did this year go? Alan Burdick wrote a book titled Why Time Flies in which he says “time is a social phenomenon,” and people don't directly perceive time's passage.
This is a very happy me in April enjoying warm weather at Gilligan's in Soho.

Brunch in Barcelona - Fariha Ansari Javed
Tumblr media
Three of our closest friends from Harvard Business School decided to meet in Barcelona for an "end-of-summer-weekend". Since I was in Paris for Maison et Objet, I decided to change my itinerary and join the fun.
It rained on the first day and we decided to look for brunch options in the vicinity of our hotel. Cup & Cake came highly recommended both online and by the concierge. We made our way two streets over and found the place bustling with a fairly long waiting time. One look at the food and we agreed it was going to be well worth standing in the rain. Brunch in Barcelona - Fariha Ansari Javed
