January 1982. "Creepy" and "surreal" are not words normally associated with Bronze Age Superman stories, but they're apt descriptions of the 1982 miniseries THE PHANTOM ZONE by Steve Gerber and Gene Colan. Probably inspired by the 1980 movie SUPERMAN 2, the mini begins with a recap of the history of the Phantom Zone, discovered by Superman's father Jor-El as a means of imprisoning Kryptonian criminals, but this is no E. Nelson Bridwell continuity-charting affair: The Phantom Zone inmates stage a mass escape, wreaking bloody havoc on Earth as Superman and an amnesiac former prisoner named Quex-Ul, forced to take the escapees' place, begin a perilous journey to the heart of the Zone, which is far stranger than Jor-El had ever imagined.
Most of the Phantom Zone villains who appear in this story had been seen before, but Gerber makes them actually frightening, a collection of madmen and human monsters who were scary enough on Krypton, without the incredible powers bestowed by Earth's yellow sun. Gerber also emphasizes the horror of the Zone itself — being imprisoned, possibly forever, as a thought without form — and his revelation of what the Zone actually is is unexpected. None of this would have worked if the series had been drawn by Curt Swan, but the art by Gene Colan (inked by Tony DeZuñiga) lends a sweaty, claustrophobic nightmare vibe to Gerber's script.
DC reprinted the miniseries in the SUPERMAN: PHANTOM ZONE trade paperback in 2013, also including Gerber's followup in DC COMICS PRESENTS #97, drawn by Rick Veitch, which is unsettling in its own right, and much meaner than Alan Moore's contemporaneous "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" (That collection shouldn't be confused with the earlier TALES FROM THE PHANTOM ZONE TPB, which is a compilation of Silver Age Phantom Zone stories.)

Faora-Ul is trans, she's not the only one and it doesn't matter to Kryptonians in general. This is because they don't reproduce Naturally. So why would someone transitioning even be a big deal in the slightest? They aren't even the only species who reproduce like this and have similar stances on Transhood.
Maltusians have been like this for millennia. Ronakar is trans as well.
While Martians did NOT reproduce like that, due to their shapeshifting nature, they also don't make a huge deal about being trans. Miss Martian and Martian Manhunter are both trans (Martian Manhunter was confirmed to be trans in one of the DCAU comics.)

Sara Douglas as Ursa in Superman ll (1981).
Ursa was described as the deadliest woman on Krypton, who hated all men save for General Dru-Zod, to whom she was slavishly devoted.
Ursa was a character created for the first Superman film, which was in development since the early 1970s and would, eventually, be split into two parts. She would make her brief first appearance in the beginning of Superman the Movie in 1978.
Someone at DC Comics decided it would be a good idea to introduce an evil, man-hating female Kryptonian in the comics before the film was released. However, since they didn't have the rights to Ursa yet, they decided to create their own own version.
And thus, the world was introduced to Faora Hu-Ul!
Tumblr media
Action Comics (vol. 1) #472 (June, 1977). Cover by Bob Oskner. This was Faora's first appearance on a cover in her true form.
Faora made her first appearance in Action Comics (vol. 1) #471 (May, 1977), but spends most of the story as a featureless phantom. Her true form is revealed later on, and we learn she is a Phantom Zone escapee. On Krypton Faora had an irrational hatred of all men, known to have killed at least twenty-three of them, and kept other Kryptonians as slaves in her very own concentration camp.
As a Kryptonian, once Faora was out of the Phantom Zone she had all the same powers as Superman. That alone would have made her a formidable opponent. But she was also an expert in Horu-Kanu, the deadliest of Krypton's martial arts. which targets pressure points to disable, cripple, and even kill opponents. Superman had no defense against that.
Faora made a several more appearances over the years, until she - and most of Superman's continuity - was erased in Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985), and Superman's subsequent reboot by John Byrne in Man of Steel (1986).
Interestingly enough, Faora did briefly reappear - now named mysteriously Zaora - in John Byrne's last Superman story. She was one of three villainous Phantom Zone escapees who murdered every living thing on Earth (in a pocket universe), and was, infamously, executed for her crimes by Superman.
Tumblr media
Zaora's death from Superman (vol. 2) #22 (October, 1988) Art by John Byrne, colors by Petra Scotese, letters by John Costanza.
Faora finally made it to the big screen in Man of Steel (2013), portrayed by Ayelet Zurer.
Tumblr media
While I have plenty of opinions about this film, I will not share them here. I will point out that, while shown only as an overzealous follower of the tyrannical General Zod, Faora was a bad@$$ opponent for Superman nonetheless.
New versions of Faora and Ursa have been introduced into the comics, with Ursa making her debut in 2006 as Zod's spouse and mother of his son, Lor-Zod. After DC's New 52 (boo!) and Rebirth, Ursa and Lor-Zod underwent character modifications, so they are different from their 2006 incarnations.
Ursa was actually (SPOILER ALERT!) killed off in the 2024 mini-series Kneel Before Zod. But I suspect it won't be too long before someone brings her back.

Note
Lois could understand Harley’s impulse. This was indeed very very sexy; especially with the idea that they’d want to do *anything* for their approval. The fantasy of that anyway. “And I can see why. Everything else aside, zod had some good taste, and I truly mean that in regards to you. But mm I can’t deny that Nyssa has my attention for this one. Very nice and bigger shape with an even nicer bounce. I’d like to add myself to list of people that have gotten up close and personal with that ass.”
Diana spoke up next. “I would like to agree with Lois, Nyssa-Vex has an incredible body, one I’d like to get familiar with. However not many people understand a warrior’s body, they can’t appreciate all that goes into an ass that is tight and firm. It has fallen out of fashion amongst the average citizen. As the princess of Themyscira I have been with many women such as yourself Faora Hu-Ul, so my preferences are more in your direction, so you get my vote. and truth be told I’d like to add you to my list.”
“I’m with mrs supes on this one. Ever since she came out, the only thing that I’ve been thinking is that I was Vexy’s ass to take a seat right on my face.” Harley said. “Mrs zod’s ass is the kind I want to see in some kind of leather outfit while I’m all tied up. Then a he’d grab my hair and force my tongue into her perfect little…”
Okay! That’s 2-1 votes in nyssa’s favor! Ladies, thank you so much for participating, now please head backstage. Faora you will be receiving the same consolation prize so go ahead and proceed to enter the same room that cir-el and nyssa please proceed to the same waiting room as Connie.
Now up next we got quite the pair. I’m some circles she’s known as a super milf, please welcome to the stage Alura-El! Now I know you’re all thinking that that’s some stiff competition, a milfs body just doesn’t quit, however her opponent is no slouch. She already has the accolade for ‘best kryptonian tits’ and she’s the only younger one that can give a milf a run for her money it’s Karen Starr!!
Tumblr media
"Everybody knows a MILF's ass is the best kind of ass," Alura hummed as she walked on stage. Much like Nyssa, she hadn't spent a lot of time on Earth, but she'd been enjoying the time she had spent there. Her tight pants clung to her ass nicely as she shook and spanked it, "Certainly can't let the MILF go out on round one, can we? Everybody knows Power Girl's tits are her strength, her ass can't compete with them...so it can't compete with my ass, either..."
"The only reason why my ass can't compete with my tits is because they set such a high bar," Karen giggled, as she also took to the stage. Her suit did little to cover her ass, especially as she grabbed it to let it slide between her ass cheeks, letting the judges see it almost bare as she slapped it, those fat cheeks visibly rippling with her slaps and shakes, "Once people look past my tits, they always think my ass is great, too..."

Part 2: The Shield-shaped Crest
The most common shape for a crest by far is Superman's trapezoidal shield shape. We see it in most continuities, and for a variety of crests.
One Earths One and Two
It's the main El crest, as seen here on Superman. It's also worn by other relatives, even those who don't have 'El' in their name. Lyle-Zee, Clark's second cousin, wears it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On New Earth
Asha Del-Nar has one with two lines. Lancepesade Shor has an indistinct one. Thara Ak-Var's Nightwing symbol is in a shield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Prime Universe
Faora Hu-Ul's maybe looks a flower? Ktar-Ol's looks like a stylized hawk. Ursa's is way too complicated, and seems to extend above the crest?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rao, a cult leader, also has a complicated one with glowy bits.
Tumblr media
In Injustice
Dru-Zod's has two diagonal lines and one fallen over 'L' at the bottom.
Tumblr media
On the Krypton TV series
Most characters have this type of crest. There's Daron and Nyss-Vex's nuclear-waste warning, Dev-Em's talons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Jayna and Lyta-Zod's ... bangs?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Supergirl series
Commander Gor and Lieutenant Mur have small ones with bad lighting. Non's is also small, but I am happy he has a proper one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Worldkillers have complicated skull ones.
Tumblr media
In the Arrowverse
Tal-Rho has a sideways 'S' symbol.
Tumblr media
In Smallville
Pa-Vel has a nice simple backwards 'Q'.
Tumblr media
In Lego continuity
Dru-Zod has a weird sickle, for some reason. (General Zod has SO MANY CRESTS!)
Tumblr media
In Tiny Titans
All the Phantom Zone prisoners have matching crests. Here's Non, General Zod, and Ursa in one image, and Lor-Zod in another. It looks like a corner with a dot on top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up - Part 3: Other Crest Shapes
Kryptonian Crests
I looked into Kryptonian family crests today. I didn't go TOO deeply, just looked at all the Kryptonian's on the DC Wiki, but I have some preliminary conclusions that I find interesting.
General Crests
At least on Earths One and Two, many Kryptonians seemed to wear a sun symbol (and possibly a few other symbols) rather then a family crest at certain points. This seems to be a symbol for Flamebird, but may also stand in for Rao, their sun god and main diety.
We see General Zod wear a small one on his left breast. Garf-Og wears one in the lab. Roz-Em has one while impersonating Jor-El.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zim-El also thinks this is proper lab wear.
Tumblr media
And here it is on Ak-Var as Flamebird.
Tumblr media
The other common symbol seems to be a planet with rings, which we see on U-Ban and Jor-L.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cadet Branch Crests
At least on Earths One and Two, there's some suggestion that younger sons/daughters may have worn empty crests on some occasions.
Kizo and Mala, younger brothers to U-Ban, wear empty triangles, while he has a ringed-planet. Lor-Van also has an empty triangle, and Shyla Kor-Onn has a small one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zor-El (Jor-El's younger brother) is often seen with an empty circle, including in New Earth continuity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zak-Kul has an empty square.
Tumblr media
Tyb-Ol has an empty diamond.
Tumblr media
Non, General Zod's mentally disabled minion, has an empty shield crest in the Young Justice cartoon. Name, symbol, and disability combine to make something pretty uncomfortable, in my opinion.
Tumblr media
Things worn INSTEAD of Crests
Aspirants (which seem to be roughly equivalent to military cadets) wear only a red stripe in New Earth.
Tumblr media
Women seem to wear crests less often, especially after marriage. Lilo wears a sash instead in All-Star Superman.
Tumblr media
But usually they just wear pretty clothes, like these two Allura In-Ze's, from Earth One and Prime.

Next: Shield-shaped Family Crests!

Female Sociopaths in Popular Media (Part 44)
Go here for Part 1. It provides an explanation for this list. Also, check out the master list which includes analyses of all the included characters. (Some analyses still may not be completed as of yet.) If this is the first part you’ve seen, reblog one of those two posts. Otherwise, feel free to reblog this one.
Brought to you in part by Cutie Honey, since there is a crap-load of not only female sociopaths, but several iterations of two of them. And I’m leaving some out of the gallery at the moment.
Also, I mentioned earlier this week that my friend @rickyriddle is thinking of opening a Discord server for people interested in psychopath/sociopath psychology. Let us know if you’d be interested or spread the post around for others to see.
Pictured above:

[5] This is the best I could do as far as finding out the actress’ name. If anyone has any info, please inform me and it will be updated once the profile comes out. [6] Seemingly ongoing as of early April 2020, but the last video on the channel was uploaded last August.
If you wanna help me, suggest some characters for me to include on the list by leaving a comment on any of the posts, sending an ask, or messaging me. You’ll be credited for helping me when I include them in the gallery post. If you don’t want to be credited, just ask and I’ll leave your name off the post.
Either that or help fact check my profiles on the master list. I haven’t seen a lot of the things that these characters come from, so I don’t have a lot of firsthand knowledge. If you have seen/played/read any of the works that I have included, look through the profiles and see if there are any inaccuracies I need to edit.
