Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's Bible - Naming Notes.
Transcript on ALT and my own observations under the cut.
The part about half-foot names made me a little confused when I first read. But basically it works as "FirstnameLastname Fathers(z)" so chilchuck's daughter Meijack would be Meijack Chils(z), first name mei, last name jack and family name Chils(z)
English isnt my first language so I'm not sure if "last name" sounded like "surname" for anyone else. But thinking about its more like a compound first name? (Something like "Anna Sophia"?)
Here's the original page for half-foot names, I believe it says "前名と後名" which google says is "before name" and "after name".
Tumblr media
Another note is that I just remembered Senshi is warrior in japanese reading that note, like sailor senshi (is from where I remembered). Common tongue is japanese, should be obvious since its a japanese work but the realization was very amusing to me.

So there’s something about Pekka Rollins that has bothered me literally since I first read the books and I think about it every time I read them okay and it’s this line:
“Who is Pekka Rollins?” Matthias asked, turning the ridiculous syllables over in his mouth. Kerch names had no dignity to them.
And this catches me out every single time because Rollins is Kaelish. As far as the reader knows for definite, “Pekka Rollins” is a Kaelish name, not a Kerch name.
Now, don’t get me wrong, we’re of course aware that Matthias is very sheltered from understanding the global scene and may simply have assumed that Rollins is Kerch because he lives in Ketterdam and runs the Dime Lions (this is the only piece of information he knows about him at this time) but I think this is unlikely considering that it was on a mission to the Wandering Isle that he met Nina and we know that, although he doesn’t speak Kaelish, he knows how to recognise it well enough that he knew Nina was speaking Kaelish and not Kerch or Ravkan (at the time he was monolingual, as he would later only learn Kerch by necessity in Hellgate).
And thinking about the name “Pekka Rollins” it doesn’t sound all that Kaelish… does it? Our examples of Kaelish names include “Fianna” (Nina’s Kaelish pseudonym at the Ice Court), “Colm”, “Eamon” (Dime Lions member), and “Harshaw”, but not many others to my recollection. Kaelish names are inspired by Celtic languages and Celtic names, as far as I can tell usually with more Irish and Scottish Gaelic influences than Welsh, Cornish, or Breton (but please note I am by no means an expert and I sadly do not speak any of these languages), and we can see this trend in our examples. But can we see it in “Pekka Rollins”? Or does this name favour the structure of Kerch names? “Kaz”, “Per”, “Wylan”, “Alys”, “Hiram”, “Gert”, “Henrik”, “Jellen”, and so many many more examples, we are overflowing with examples of Kerch names (if you are wondering about more examples I’d recommend checking out the Grishaverse wiki there’s a full list on there of all the characters mentioned from each country, but note it doesn’t include any pseudonyms as far as I’m aware), that tend to favour more separated syllables and harsher consonant sounds than, say, “Fianna” where the name runs quickly together, pronounced to have two syllables when it would probably be said with three by someone Kerch who only saw it written down, with more emphasis on the “yah” sound of the “ia” than the double “n”?
So is it, in fact, possible that “Pekka Rollins” is a Kerch name? A chosen name, by a man who fled his home to restart his life in a new city, with a name that matched it? Is this supposed to imply yet another parallel between Pekka and Kaz?????
I have no idea, this is purely theoretical, but considering that they are narrative foils and we can draw many, many parallels between them and this line is always on my mind, it’s personally my favourite solution. If you agree/disagree or have a different theory, let me know! I love stuff like this so much, it’s so interesting to see what different people think or how we might have read certain details differently

Do you know how to come up with names for a fantasy race?
I've been trying to mix words but it comes out ugly sounding and looking. I've also tried to follow what we do in the real world, and use Greek words as suffixes, but whatever I combine it still comes out ugly... Help?
I've been trying to mix English+Greek, or just greek or just english.
Naming System For Your Fantasy Creatures/Races
Hey there, thanks for the ask! If English + Greek isn't working, try these combinations instead:
Greek + Latin
English + Latin (there will be a lot of overlaps)
French + English/Latin/Greek
Sanskrit + Greek + Latin
Latin has some pretty useful suffixes and prefixes, and it is the primary language used for flora/fauna scientific names (as well as in the periodic table, in fact!).
For inspiration, try searching up scientific names for random animals and flowers, which will help you discover some useful suffixes.
pig = Sus scrofa domesticus rose = Rosa rubiginosa > These already sound cooler than the average English name!
Examples:
Creature = Fire spitting elf with green skin Greek for fire = Fotia Latin suffix for elf = -pha Sanskrit for green = haritah -> Fictional Name = Haritah Fotipha (or just "Fotipha") or Haripha or Fortiah?
Creature = Water dragon Sanskrit for water = Jalam French for fly = lavion -> Fictional Name = Jalavion or Laviam?
When combining word, join them at the vowel for better flow.
Hope this helps! :)

WHY KINGDOM NAMES NOT KINGDOM
I Snatched some of @i-hate-happy-endings beautiful place names and @darkandstormydolls wonderful suggestion and shuffled around some syllables
I have
The kingdom of Ferven (Fair-ven) Replacing Eferveyn [Citizens are Ferens, Nationality is Ferven]
And
The Vynduris Empire (Vin-do-riss) Replacing Demfyre [Citizens are Vynduri, Nationality is Vyndurin]
I also have
Council of the Nylix Mountains (Alternatively called Nylix Council) [Citizens are called Nyls, Nationality is Nyll]
and
Sar (Has no titles) [Citizens are called Under dwellers, Nationality is Sar]
Ronan is Ferven
Finn & Rose are Vyndurin
Jak is Nyll
Phenik is Sar
(Yes, I checked, none of these are anything offensive irl)

One time I saw a post that said that fantasy stories should stop giving characters weird names and that if the story is good enough it will work even with just normal names. Which first of all FUCK you just want us worlbuilders and conlangers to die and suffer. And second all the names you listed as normal are just old sounding west european names and they and those cultures need to stop being treated as the defult for worlds with everything else being seen as strange/weird/exotic/alien. Go choke on a glotall stop!

★ some of my favourite character names.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a name is a beautiful thing. in stories, a character's name can encapsulate their personality, and often, creates an image surrounding that name that's impossible to shake off. sometimes, it has significance- a name can suggest foreshadowing. the following is a list of some of my favourite names!
★ masculine names
Idriss - arabic origins - studious, smart
Sahir - islamic origins - wakeful, charming
Caspian - latin(?) origins - 'white' , some say that it could also refer to Qazvin, Iran and is a name taken from the Caspian Sea.
Dorian - greek - 'of Doris' and derived from the greek word 'doron', meaning gift
Magnus - latin - 'greatest'
Warren - french/english - 'park keeper'
Athan - greek - 'eternal life'
Erion / Erjon - albanian - 'ionian wind'
Fodor - hungarian - a nickname for a person with curly hair.
★ feminine names
Aicha/Aisha - arabic - 'alive and well'
Blair - scottish - field, meadow
Celeste - latin - 'heavenly'
Circe - greek - named after the greek mythological sorceress of the same name
Elora - greek - sun ray
Cora - greek - core, heart
Jamila - swahili - beautiful
Maria - latin - mary, star of the sea
Pandora - greek - all gifts
★ gender-neutral names
Ellis - welsh origin - kind, benevolent.

ok - but imo, dramatic place-names in fantasy books aren't that unrealistic. we named a desert "death valley" after all. if there were car-sized (and larger) spiders living there, we might have actually called it "the valley of dreadful death". (see: nan durgotheb in the silmarillion)

I'm making a dungeon meshi oc who's an elf nobility but I have a hard time giving them a name. I look at the dunmeshi elf names but I can't tell if they mean something. are they based on flowers? words in another language? or jumbled made up words to form a name? the only name that's normal-ish is Marcille
Marcille probably has a more tallmen aligned name yeah, for the others my guess is that they're made-up names that sound elvish
Tumblr media
The named elves (with elvish names) we have are:
Nobles:
Mithrun of the house of Kerensil
Pattadol of the house of Vari
Flamela of the house of Sorn
Milsiril of the house of Tol
Others:
Fleki
Lycion
Cithis Ofri
Fionil
Heimea
Misyl
Erique
Otta
And these guys from Mithrun's Backstory
Tumblr media
Opa, Mikepas, Coyote, Fungil, Pahsa, Pohsa, Helki, Yugin, Sita, Snow
I can't recognize any trend in the name (besides that names ending with an "il" sound seems common) and they don't sound like real life names even when it's a little similar (like Erique and Mikepas)
Cithis is the only with a surname I wonder whats up with that..

I wonder what would a list of all names currently stashed would look like. There are 1842 posts counting this one. I stayed consistent and tried to keep the post-per-stash consistent (hence why some posts have 888 names in them, not 444).
1842x444=817848
≈817848 names stashed. The Ultimate Markovgen Unit is only 47607 words long. Btw the UMU is created by combining all presets from the site I use for generating names, nowadays it should be bigger since the site got updated with a couple more presets.
Anyways just. Hey there followers. The follower count says there's 143 of you but the average note count on my posts is bit below 1. Which is. Understandable I guess, since the stashes are meant to be throwaways either way, out of countless namestashes only one or two names are used usually I s'pose.
Just wanted to say I would love some more interaction from those who are here. If it happens I will perhaps reveal the whole process of how I make the stashes and thus make the blog defunct since nobody will need the stashes anymore due to them being able to make stashes themselves.
So like. Yeah.
