ok so. i’ve no idea if you want an actual answer or a joke but i do know a little about this and it does have the potential to be a bit of a weird one.

francis has selected most of the voting cardinals atm (which is why there is the highest number of non-european cardinals appointed rn than ever before). But. historically he didn’t involve the cardinals much in his decision making and there has been noise about how he is distant from them etc. so idk how much of an influence or sway he had in them.

the church has also been losing money over the past few years bc many fundamental christians think they are ‘too soft’ on stances like queer people, immigrants and non-believers, and significant donations generally come from this group of people, than average folk or progressive groups. unfortunately, it is the fanatic fundamentalists that are a big part of the catholic church’s bread and butter. francis’s opinion that the church should be more transparent in its working did Not go down well, both in the church and out of it. this, as well as how the world is going atm, might urge the conclave to a more conservative vote.

from what i can see (i have been some what removed from most of the news coming out of the church for the past few months bc of hashtag self care so this could be out of date) there are roughly four contenders for the throne.

following francis, we have tagle who was close with the pope from what i know and is fairly left leaning (advocates for inclusion and transparency). he probably has significant sway in anyone who proper bought into francis’s ideals but apart from that idk. turkson is also fairly popular and left leaning, particularly on climate change and economic inequality. these two are from the philippines and ghana respectively so it would be huge if either one got in. (there has been like ‘records’ of popes who were black (three) and popes who were asian (nine) but it has all been fairly wishy washy and unconfirmed so this would definitely be considered basically a first if they got in)

parolin is another one of francis’s circle (has been the vatican’s secretary of state for a while) and bc he is more of a centrist than tagle or turkson he might be the more popular overall out of the three.

on the conservative side, there is erdő who is a big supporter for the more traditional and old way of the church. this would be a swing back to the time of john paul and benedict. Which. is not great. at all. there is also scola who is fairly conservative and a front runner in the conclave that elected pope francis but the guy is like over 80 so i don’t really see him being chosen.

the church is scared. worse, it is scared of losing power. votes based on this kind of fear rarely end well. i would prefer tagle but parolin is probably the best bet to wager any hopes on

They test the mattress firmness by Francis launching himself onto them from a running start while yelling things like “I DESERVE COMFORT!” Henry picks up and throw pillows and critiques their density out loud like he’s reviewing fine cheeses. Just children in their playground!
