A major flaw in English is the lack of a gender-neutral version of "guy."

"Guy" is a great all-purpose word for A Generic Human. A guy is a person who does a job (delivery guy, repair guy, pizza guy). He can be a person with one defining trait (typewriter guy, peanut butter guy) He can be an animal, regardless of sex. He can be Good, or Bad, or Li'l. He can be Some Guy or That Guy. In the plural, "guys" can be a synonym for "all" or "everyone." But A Generic Human is, unless stated otherwise, A Male Human.

Because "guy" isn't masculine-gendered; he's masculine-default, masculine by the absence of femininity. He's a stick figure without a skirt. A cartoon animal without eyelashes. A bald baby without a bow. There's Mankind, and then there's Some Guy.

There's not even a good feminine equivalent, let alone a gender-neutral one. "Girl" is for children and is parallel to "boy." "Woman" is parallel to "man." I've seen "gal" proposed, but "gal" is for characters in old-timey saloons, and not for real living humans. In practice, "lady" seems most often used when the Generic Human is female (delivery lady, some lady on the phone, that lady over there), but if "guy" invisibilizes gender, "lady" emphasizes it (thanks, patriarchy), and at best, it's still binarist.

So, what do we do about this glaring problem?

Option one: Make "guy" gender-neutral. "You guys" is already basically gender-neutral (in the same masculine-default way that "mankind," "every man for himself," etc. are). This could happen.

Problem: The cultural moment is wrong for it. This might have been a good proposal in the '80s, but in 2025, we're moving away from default-masculine. There's been a pushback against "dude" as gender-neutral. Other than "actor," which is almost a special case, I can't think of any formerly-masculine words that have become gender-neutral in the past couple of decades.

Option two: Just say "person."

Problem: Sounds stilted, doesn't have the monosyllabic flow of "guy."

Option three (my preferred option): "Folk."

Problem: I know what you're thinking -- "But 'folk' is a collective noun! It's not a singular person!" Okay, but hear me out: When was the last time you heard "folk" used correctly as a collective noun?

"There's folk music, folk tales, folk remedies..." That's an adjective. When's the last time you heard "a folk"? Exactly.

And it's intuitive -- if you asked a small child who knew the word "folks," they would probably guess that "a folk" means "a person."

Even the word "people" is technically a singular collective noun; it's just not usually used that way.

So can we make "folk" the gender-neutral "guy"?

"I called the office and they're sending a repair folk over." "Some folk called and left a message." "This folk in line at the grocery store." "Look at the puppy! What a cute li'l folk!" "Check out that folk with the guitar."
