A long time ago, when I was a fledgling animation major frustrated and angry with how all the big animation studios in my country had ditched drawn animation for CGI, I came across a crowdfund campaign for a series of steampunk-themed animated shorts, drawn by hand and directed by former Disney animator James Lopez. Desperate to help show that there was still a market for what I saw as a beautiful and expressive medium unfairly kneecapped by the very companies who depended on it to rise to the top, I threw some money at the project and hoped that Lopez and his team would someday see it to fruition.
A lot has gone by in, what, a decade? But now, coinciding with a new wave of indie animation online, the first of the Hullabaloo series has finally arrived.
I look forward to seeing the rest soon, as they are released.
#James Lopez#Hullabaloo#2D animation#Veronica Daring#Jules#was hoping for some more story but perhaps that will come later. I can be patient. I've waited THIS long#it does feel more like a trailer than an actual short film

Charon's Obol Process
The thing with portraits that I learned the hard way is that you have to get a "read" of it before you start laying tones down. I do this by having a zoomed out version of the ref photo so I can see what stands out. Otherwise, it's very easy to get carried away and pore over the smallest details over getting the likeness right. I think I got it but something nags me as always. Perhaps it will pass. Jim Caviezel is not very forgiving in that regard. I don't think I have ever got him truly right but this is definitely better than last time.
I don't usually do thumbnails or palettes but it helped to do a little sketch with the colors I would like to see. I wanted green but what I had in mind was a traditional artist on instagram who laid a deep green as a foundation for a skin tone, and through the application of other layers he achieved a very rich, realistic skin tone. I don't think I have the artistic balls to start with green yet.
The background is me going nuts with rectangular and circular selections, gradients and custom eraser brushes. Paintstorm has a neat little feature where you can make a brush an eraser instantly.
It could probably use some improvement but if I stare at my paintings too long I go insane so I just finish them as soon as I can.
The gif I made with Photopea.

A few interesting things from Max's interview on MDR yesterday:
- during filming of "Zwei zu Eins", Max shared an apartment with Ronald Zehrfeld at the location. He jokes that one of them snores but he wouldn't name names 😜
- when asked why he keeps to himself, Max says over the years, he has had his experiences, for him, interviews are mainly about work. He believes an actor should maintain a certain mystery, so he can play different characters. That if people know about his private life, they might compare it with the character he plays and not quite believe him (in the film) anymore. For the same reason, he doesn't do commercials. Unless he has fallen into hard times 😂
- he picks film/TV projects based on intuition. It depends on who he trusts, what he feels like doing. Sometimes film locations and people he will be working with play a part too. When he reads the script, he wants to be able to imagine it straight away (if he can do it). He also trusts the casting process.
- for sports, he likes to go running and do yoga to wake himself up in the morning, follow by a cold shower (👀), but kickboxing is still his passion. He also likes playing football. And he plays table tennis at home (OP: I already know he has a hammock at home, now a table tennis table? how big is his damn apartment?)
- When asked if he watches his old stuff, Max says not at the moment. But his mother collects all his films, so he knows they are there. Maybe later, he says.
- For current projects, Max mentions he will be filming in Venice in October (OP: I thought Max has already finished filming Silvio Soldini's "The Tasters", but maybe not?)
They also played a game called "2 to 1", where Max needs to find two objects to match the weight of one object at the other end. Max picked an Oscar statue and won the game, of course.
Also, "Zwei zu Eins" is the indie summer hit in German cinemas, grossing over 3.3 million euros. The film's distribution rights have been sold to more regions: Scandinavia, Hungary, the Baltics, Israel and Latin America ❤
#max riemelt#mdr um 4#lol about sharing a flat with rony 😭#a lot of same old same old questions but max is ever patient#I want to know what project he’s filming in Venice!#his mum is his biggest fan 🥰

Ridley Scott: I made a film about two rival officers constantly duelling throughout and in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, and now I've actually done a film about Napoleon!
Me: Great! Could you also do a film about Baron Dominique Jean Larrey, a vital innovator in European battlefield surgery and triage, often considered the first military surgeon; who pioneered the ambulance volantes ("Flying ambulances") to quickly transport wounded men from the battlefield, effectively creating a forerunner of the modern MASH units; co-led the team that performed one of the first accurately recorded pre-anaesthetic mastectomies in Western medicine; was spotted helping wounded men while under heavy fire during the Battle of Waterloo by the Duke of Wellington who purposefully ordered for his soldiers not to fire in Larrey's direction; and when captured by the Prussians after the battle was about to be executed on the spot when he was recognised by one of the German surgeons, who pled for his life because he had saved the life of Field Marshall Blücher's son some years earlier?
Ridley Scott:
Ridley Scott: Um.
Me: Yeah. Didn't think so.
#Yeah; Baron Larrey was one of my dad's heroes#When we went to Père Lachaise Cemetery we went partly to honour his grave#ridley scott#Baron Dominique Jean Larrey#baron larrey#Dominique Jean Larrey#napoleon 2023#the duellists#the duellists 1977#check out the duellists; it's a REALLY good film!#Larrey did a lot of other stuff that I didn't mention; otherwise I'd just be vomiting the wikipedia page#He was a close favourite of Napoleon and went on the Egyptian campaign#he started a school in Cairo where he researched opthalmy (inflammation of the eye)#He made sure that all soldiers (not just French and their allies) were treated#The mastectomy was to treat suspected breast cancer#(unknown to this day if there actually was cancer but perhaps better safe than sorry)#and the patient was Frances Burney#who frankly deserves a film or tv series of her own#If you're up for it she wrote her own description of what the operation was like; which is there to read on her wikipedia page#Whether or not her breast WAS cancerous she lived another thirty years#Ironically her husband DID die of cancer#anyway#*jazz hands*

⸻ continuation of [א] with the one and only @gruenwald
Moments like these were so beautiful about her, he thought. The way she looked after the children as they ran back to their parents or siblings, some of them straight to their tents. When she was unobserved and on her own. Lost in thought. Herself. Sometimes he had the feeling that he could read her every emotion, even if he was in no position to assume it. They simply hadn't known each other long enough for that. Initially he thought, they had only met briefly, like two straight lines that intersected at one point, only to move further apart at a steady pace. But their meeting had taken on a different character; they were sine curves that ran at different intervals, but always met at regular points. Perhaps they would eventually converge more and more. Or maybe not. A beautiful prospect and a pleasant feeling that accompanied the uncertainty of things. Sometimes it came over him when he thought about her for a long time. This warm feeling spreading through his body. Those were the beautiful moments of the last few weeks.
“Ouch!” he laughed and looked down at her, theatrically placing his hand on his chest as if pain was coursing through his innermost being. “How blind I was, entranced by thy visage, believing at last I'd found one who heeded my tales,” the blonde claimed, looking down at the brunette. How pretty she was, he thought. For a moment, he paused as he studied her eyes, her lips. The longer he looked (was he staring already?), the more nervous he became. What if anything would change in their relationship if he made a move now that he couldn't foresee the consequences of? Of everything he had encountered so far, humans were the more complex beings, whose thought processes he could not always comprehend. Overwhelmed, he looked around the camper, examining individual objects as he wiped his clammy hands on his black jeans. “So... we could either watch a movie or something or read or see if there's anything exciting happening in the woods tonight: Eerie whispers, forest spirits, hints for ancient civilizations, strange lights, young couples making out in ways no one really wants to see? Really the stuff dreams are made of, if you ask me. What'd you be down for?”
#(( ahhhhhh isaiah being oblivous to any form of interest anyone may show him ???? gotta be my favorite trope ))#(( “oh; raufasertapete” was kinda missing here ))#(( still figuring out how when and where i will format pls be patient ))#(( sorry to keep you waiting for so long too ))#(( but i have four full blown days off next week ))#(( carrd rework and answering threads here we goooo ))#gruenwald#— ❛❛ // ANSWERS ¦ we are unusual and tragic and alive#— ❛❛ // HAYLEY ¦ this film is about you

Neuvillette's body language in my mind ranges from curious feline, to Long Cryptid that lingers just outside the door when you're falling asleep
#“Honey............... stop hovering ominously and join me in bed.” — Wriothesley#I'm on my autism agenda. So he masks#when he's outside. at work. his movements are so uncannily precise that charlotte can probably film him daily and the footage would overlap#near perfectly.#I like seeing him as a sheer force of nature too. so like. Imagine his path to his office or to his seat in the courtroom#being literally worn in by centuries of him just walking that same path. Like rivers carving themselves out of mountains#but to be fair someone probably polish the floor regularly.#but when he goes home to his husband. or when he's alone. he becomes............ creatura. apyr#and he would hover just slightly off the ground to lift the pressure of his legs (they hurt. He only uses them to look human)#and he makes weird. deep sea noises. and wriothesley is like you hungry or somethin. dinner will be ready soon darlin be patient with me#also he gets quite clingy/physical. he likes hugs a lot because he craves the pressure on his body. it reminds him of being deep under wate#he needs to be squeezed and squished. it's calming. At home wriothesley would sometime just pancake on top of him and he's be like yes.#but outside. he'd just sometime drape an arm over Neuvillette's shoulder. hold his hand. give him a hearty pat every now and then#to recalibrate him.#sigewinne voice Monsieur Neuvillette I prescribe you some Hugs! You are Overstimulated! Your Grace! Squish him!#krill#ingital#otcoj
