Note To Self:
Do not search up the “#fbi warning” tag anymore.
There will be more people talking about some cult than images of the fbi anti piracy warning.

I feel like people on Neocities are putting too much emphasis on the ILLEGALITY of emulation; like, to the point they're creating crime where none exists: the idea that even TALKING about piracy is illegal. At the very least, they're instilling a sense of fear of breaking the law, and at the worst they're espousing the corporate feudal ideal of thoughtcrime. It depends on how you take it, obviously, but either way it doesn't bode well.
One of the things I've always tried to get across in all of my talk about data preservation is the existence of abandonware. This is an area of copyright law where you're pretty much completely safe downloading ROMs and ISOs. You'd be surprised at how much totally mainstream stuff this applies to! Every game ever made for the Nintendo GameCube! The original version of The Sims! Other stuff! Basically, if it isn't sold in stores or available from some DLC service or another, it's abandonware and you can download it without worrying about any sort of repercussions.
A widescale crackdown on emulation like the RIAA witchhunts from the turn of the millennium isn't very likely to happen, because if that fiasco taught the corporate feudal state anything, it's that copyrighted material is on too many computers in too many far flung locations for piracy to be totally stamped out. Nintendo talks a big game about anti-piracy in order to scare people into not going to downloadnintendoshit.eggsalad.rom and downloading their entire roster of NSO+EP games. Their shareholders are not going to accept an expensive plan to stop all emulation everywhere all at once because of the pop-up nature of pirate sites. They simply do not have the time or the money to continually play Whac-a-Mole with emulationists. And, when they DO eventually get 'round to suing someone, it's the operator of the server where that stuff was stored in the first place.
"Oh, but the FBI--" Forget it. When they passed the USA PATRIOT Act, no one really realised just how much data a human being generates in a day. Especially with the advent of social media. The federal spy agencies get literal EXABYTES of data dumped on them every single day, and there's no AI process in existence that can possibly parse through all that information in a timely enough manner to do them any good. They have to pick and choose what they pay attention to, and there are a lot more threatening targets than some rando from the sticks torrenting No-CD cracks of Electronic Arts games.
We all need to get real comfortable REAL FAST with breaking the law, especially in the US, UK, and EU, because a LOT of new crimes are gonna come up in the next few years relating to data and online privacy. If the corporate feudal theocratic complex can convince you that emulation is a serious crime, it won't take much more goading into making you treat privacy as a crime, too. Once they've done this, they've won. If the first step against total destruction of personal privacy is playing Nintendo games on your computer, then WHY ARE YOU RESISTING IT?? Holy shit, why is this still something we need to talk about?

I hate to be an asshole, but I’ve seen some posts along the lines of “I do NOT authorize anyone to feed my fics to AI!” circulate around tumblr, and I have to admit they all make me laugh. I’m neutral on AI fic myself, but if someone really wants to feed your fic to chatGPT, a disclaimer is not gonna stop them. Just like those anti piracy warnings on DVDs or anti cheating warnings on a syllabus, but this time with even less repercussions if you do it! (Like seriously, Someone put your fic through chatGPT against your will… and what’s your next step? Calling the FBI to report it?)
I’m a general believer that what someone doesn’t know, doesn’t hurt them. I’d be pretty wounded if someone put my stuff through AI and *posted it publicly*, so I really DO get it, or at least I TRY to get it…but if someone put one of my unfinished fics through AI and told the AI to finish it, and they kept it to themselves just for their own personal files… I wouldn’t care in the slightest. Hell, even if I KNEW I don’t think I’d care.
I can’t really “allow” or “not allow” people to do certain things with my fics. No one can. It’d be one thing if it was “I don’t authorize people to do anything *publicly* with my fics” (because at least reposts like that can be reported to AO3) but if it’s just between you and OpenAI. . . Who cares?
--
If the DVD warnings are anything to go by, such notes just make people want to do it more in a contrarian way.
I think some of the fear and anger is because AI scraping is a hot topic. What kind of corpus is acceptable to use without permission or remuneration for what may become a commercial product?
But I don't actually think somebody running my fic through one of these is meaningfully adding to its issues around consent.

Disney VHS Minutiae: 1992 Stuff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you're my age, and are American, you likely saw these warnings before Disney films when popping in the VHS of a movie, show, cartoon compilation or some kind of half-hour program...
Where and when did they first debut?
There's been some light debate around that within Disney VHS collecting circles, and deeper depths than that...
The conventional wisdom in those circles has held that these warning screens first appeared sometime in fall 1991.
Specifically, on later pressings of ROBIN HOOD's July 1991 VHS release...
However, over the years, I haven't seen one of those tapes containing the green warnings (as opposed to the equally iconic red-orange warnings that Disney had been using prior to that, for a good 7 years) that was printed any earlier than spring 1992...
So, for now, I rule that those ROBIN HOOD pressings with the green warnings started popping up around early 1992. Around the time 101 DALMATIANS came to VHS. And I'm specifically talking about the prints that have the green warnings and the cut-short 1989 Walt Disney Classics logo. Not the more common set of pressings that use the gradient 1988 Walt Disney Classics logo. I've got that one, mine's printed in September 1993.
So... Not ROBIN HOOD... Where else?
The Walt Disney Studio Film Collection...
A showcase collection of the studio's most-known live-action classics that came in cardboard slipcover cases, it's often been suggested that this collection first hit stores in September 1991... So that means the green warnings came out in fall 1991, right?
The montage of films that appears the beginning of each VHS ieven copyrighted "1991", so that's proof, eh?
But upon digging, the line of videocassettes hit the store shelves on January 24, 1992...
Tumblr media
Funny thing is, sometimes the copyright dates on things don't refer to release years. It's merely the year the thing is copyrighted.
For some Disney examples, the '80s VHS releases of CINDERELLA and SLEEPING BEAUTY carry - in Roman numerals - the copyright years. CINDERELLA is copyrighted 1949, and SLEEPING BEAUTY 1958. CINDERELLA was theatrically released in February 1950, BEAUTY in January 1959. So, they were copyrighted at the end of their respective completion years. The Pixar film ONWARD, a March 2020 release, carries a 2019 copyright at the end of the credits.
And so on and so forth, there's plenty of examples elsewhere. Off the top of my head, video games' copyright dates don't always align w/ release year. MS. PAC-MAN in pretty much every iteration is copyrighted 1981, but the game actually hit arcades in February 1982.
So yeah... It appears that those green warning screens appeared on January 24, 1992... They may have been created in late 1991, printed onto VHS and Betamax tapes in late 1991, but they first appeared on television screens in late January of 1992.
1992 was like this aesthetic reset for Walt Disney Home Video.
The tapes now had all-new FBI/anti-piracy warnings, we went from red-orange with a Golden Age of Hollywood-looking font to green and more basic sans-serif fonts. We now had an all-new Feature Presentation logo:
Tumblr media
There's also a weird bit of history concerning when that one first appeared... There's been an anecdote going around for what seems to be two decades, that has long claimed that this self-writing bumper actually first appeared in late 1991 on specific pressings of RESCUERS DOWN UNDER... But I have yet to find any evidence of those existing. For my non-existent money, it first appeared on 101 DALMATIANS' debut VHS in April 1992. Second set of pressings, to be exact. The 1st pressings of DALMATIANS had no previews whatsoever.
Even some title cards using the same lilac background and Laser font to match, as seen on the VHS releases of 101 DALMATIANS and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the Walt Disney Classics logo - ya know, the one with Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey - saw a minor update, in that it looked a lot more saturated and blue than before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subtle differences, but they're there!
Those who made the title cards/bumpers really liked the Laser font, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the French-Canadians got one:
Tumblr media
An all-new Walt Disney Home Video logo appears to have debuted in early 1992 as well... Sometimes in black, sometimes in blue:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It actually first appeared in late 1991... But on commercials only. Not the full 5-second logo, but just the second-long shine with an announcer speaking, and the music corresponding with the movie trailer:
youtube
That ad for RESCUERS DOWN UNDER above might just be the first-ever appearance, at that...
It seems the full logo debuted on the 1992 VHS release of NEWSIES, and - in bumper form with additional text - 2nd pressings of THE ROCKETEER that same year. Otherwise, it was elsewhere throughout 1992: Commercials, promo tapes, etc.
And that was, to date, their biggest year anyways due to the success of both 101 DALMATIANS (which moved over 11-14m units) and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (which broke the record back then, with over 20m units sold).

tell the story about pirating media!!
(hope you’re taking care of yourself friend :) )
there was this guy in the plaza that
bought dvds full price, ripped and burned a couple dozen copies, and sold them
for a fraction of the price.
i remember going there with my dad as a kid,
him getting shitty bollywood movies and me trying (and failing) to convince him to buy some kid's stuff.
we would get paan after, it was right next to that guy's shop.
it's closed now, dvds and blu-ray disks (remember those!) defunct in an era of streaming, replaced by a fancy dress shop.
the dvds are still in a box buried in my room, next to a disk reader that only serves to light up with strange text at night.
paan shop changed locations, still in the same area.
i wonder about change a lot. anyways
most of our dvds/cds/blu-rays are white with the name of the movie written on them in black marker.
i don't know what happened to the guy, but i know his handwriting, even still.
it's funny how at the beginning, there were always these FBI, anti-piracy PSAs,
"Piracy Is Not A Victimless Crime" - "The unauthorized reproduction and distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal..."
all watched on a white disk-with-name-written-on-in-sharpie, pirated by a man who i only know as "older brother", bought for 50c at 10pm.
it sure was nice.

Weekly Explorations #9: Scan Lines
Process #1: Rays
Characteristics: Bright, Golden, Intense
Process #2: Shadow Play
Characteristics: Dark, Puppet, Manipulated
Process #3: Scan Lines
Characteristics: Linear, Retro, Low-Resolution
Chosen Topic: Scan Lines
Why? Scan line were once a reminisce point in our lives and has been slowly been forgotten overtime.
Keywords:
Old
1990s
Static
Linear
Creation
Snapshot
Mask
Summary:
For this week's weekly exploration, we had to choose a design from the Shapes category where I chosen scan lines as my design choice. Scan lines were once a popular thing among CRT displays on TVs and gives a sense of nostalgia for those who seen them back in the early days whenever it was for the VHS tapes or DVD discs played on a small grey digital box that makes static noises if you touch the glass.
Application: Adobe Photoshop + Illustrator
Creative Concept:
My concept is something that everyone has seen in the early days and has always been the scare factor for young folks. The FBI Anti-Privacy Warning seal dominates every beginning of the VHS or DVD where people probably brush it off as an advisable warning for those who dare try to copy content. But several years later, this has slowly faded away and the FBI actually everyone use the Anti-Piracy Warning seal for free, and without registering for copyright protection, which I didn't know about.
