You post about Mayan glyphs sometimes & seem to be familiar with them. How do you study them? I've read information here & there online & I've read Coe's Deciphering the Maya Glyphs, but I really don't know of many resources.
There are a LOT of resources online for Classical Maya, which is great! But it can be hard to sift through all that information, much of it unpredictably getting updated and superseded.
-
My favourite dictionary is probably Harri Kettunen and Christophe Helmke's Introduction to Maya Hieroglyphs. (That's a direct link to the PDF. A link to the download page in HERE. The version I was using was the 14th edition. Apparently we're up to the 19th this year, so I've updated my files.)
If you want a slightly bigger dictionary, The Updated Preliminary Classic Maya‐English, English‐Classic Maya Vocabulary of Hieroglyphic Readings, by Erik Boot, is EXCELLENT. (That's a link to the academia dot edu page.)
The first only has a limited number of images of the glyphs, and the second has none at all, but they're essential for figuring out how words are spelled, and what glyphs actually exist, so you know what to look up later. The first one also gives you an intro into grammar, and is just an all around good read.
-
Actual guides to glyphs ...
The Introduction to Maya Hieroglyph above is great for syllabics and some common words.
Beginners Visual Catalog of Maya Hieroglyphics, by Alexandre Tokovinine IS a really good guide for beginners. The images are stylized in ways that don't match most actual writing, but they're clearly depicted, and the sounds associated with them are a lot more accurate than older resources.
I still use John Montgomery's online Dictionary of Maya Hieroglyphs to check for logograms that I can't easily find elsewhere. It's a LITTLE out of date, but solid.
Truthfully, though? I often need to find academic articles on individual glyphs. I'll know they exist, because one of my dictionaries will spell that word with ALL CAPS, to indicate a logogram, but actually finding out what it looks like can be a pain. I have a bunch of articles saved onto my computer, in separate folders for animals, food/plants, and everything else.
-
Glyph Dwellers is a great site for articles and recent research. You have to take what they give you, but it's always interesting!
Wayeb, Mesoweb, and FAMSI all have a lot of good resources.
Academia dot edu and other online sites are also good, once you learn how to recognize the cranks.
-
There's also a lot of finding images of various artifacts with translations. Wayeb, Mesoweb, and FAMSI all have large databases of drawings and photos that you can browse to get an idea of what the script looked like in use.
The Maya Vase Database is amazing! The Classic Maya LOVED writing on their dishes and containers! It also has downloads of all the codexes (books) that survived.
-
Hope this helps a little! But really, try out Harri Kettunen and Christophe Helmke's Introduction to Maya Hieroglyphs before anything else! It's good.
-
¹ Mr. Boot disagreed with other linguists about quite a few subtle facets of translation. Both sides had very compelling arguments, and it's often visible in different readings across dictionaries.

I’ve been talking about it a few times but recently i’ve gotten more into it so i crafted
Famsies
And here is some random information about newsies as parents
Starting with Spralbert:
The have four kids. They planned three. But Rocket turned out to have a twin sister.
The kids call Albert Dad. They call Spot Pop, and Race Pa.
Brooklyn is the oldest. She’s one year older than Conny and almost five years older than the twins. Conny is one year younger than Brooklyn and four years older than the twin. Roxy and Rocket are almost five years younger than Brooklyn and four years younger than Conny.
Brooklyn doesn’t have a nickname per se but her dads call her their little dancer sometimes. Conny is sometimes called Con but usually they just say Conny. Her dads sometimes call her honey, or hun. Roxy doesn't have one either, her dads just call her princess but Rocket is often called Rocky as a joke, so all the children have o’s and y’s in their names. His dad’s sometimes call him their star, or rockstar
Brooklyn does ballet until she’s 12 and then gives it up for hip hop.
Conny loves animals, she hates school and she’s barely inside unless she has to. She especially loves birds, specifically ducks and chickens. At eight, up until she’s twelve, she has a circus phase.
Rocket has a new hobby every other week.
Roxy loves acting, dressing up or doing makeup.
Javey has two daughters.
Luna and Fey.
Luna three years older than Fey. She’s two years younger than Conny, three years younger than Brooklyn and two years older than Roxy and Rocket.
Davey is Dad and Jack is Daddy.
Luna is super close with Rocket. They do like practically everything together.
Fey is into Astronomy and shit. She’s also in school plays with Roxy.
Crayon only has a son called Freddy. He’s Connys age and he’s super artistic. He was also 100% a boyscout and u CANNOT change my mind.
Feel free to send asks about more newsies as Parents!! I’m definitely planning on Blush getting a kid. But if you want more, I’m absolutely up for it!!!!
Under cut, theres more information about Spralberts kids and Spralberts backrounds.
BIG FAT Triggerwarning for the latter!!!
Also appearances lol
Albert has two stepbrothers, Oscar and Morris, who are also his cousins. Morris is six years older than him and four years older than Oscar. Oscar is four years younger than Morris and two years older than Albert. Albert is six years younger than Morris and two years younger than Oscar.
Alberts mom died when he was 17, which left him alone with his stepdad, because Oscar and Morris already moved out at that point. His stepdad was pretty abusive, and alcoholic after Alberts mom, Lady, passed.
Races real name is Ed. He was kicked out by his parents for being gay at 14 and then adopted by Medda. His adoptive brothers are Jack and Crutchie (real name Charlie). All three of them were born in the same year but Jack is the oldest by a few months, and Race is the youngest, making Crutchie the middle child.
Spot lost his family in a housefire when he was pretty young. Only he and his older sister Niamh survived. Spot’s real name is Carlo.
Niahm is 7 years older than Spot.
Spot often blames himself for being one of the only ones that survived the fire. He used to burn himself as a teenager, to feel the same pain that his family must have felt in their final moments.
After Alberts mom died he used to hurt himself too.
Same for Race after getting kicked out by his parents.
Spot is Hispanic, Latino. He’s from Cuba originally but he and Niamh moved to New York after the fire. he has short dark hair. He’s very short but makes up for it with muscles. A lot of muscles. So many muscles.
Albert is white and from Brazil originally. He used to live there until he was three. Then his mom moved to Canada and his dad to alabama, which is where he switched every two weeks until he was seven. Then he and his mom moved to New York and moved in with Alberts stepdad. He has ginger, fluffy hair and an athletic stature.
Race is an Italian immigrant. He lived in New York for as long as he can remember. He’s white and has has blonde curly hair and is really, really tall.
Brooklyn is black, and she’s adopted. Her parents are unknown and also where she comes from. But she was extremely shy when she first got adopted and flinched at sudden movements, leaving little to imagination.
Conny a blonde, white canadian girl and is also adopted since she was two. They started to look for someone with similar genetics as Race.
Roxy and Rocket are Alberts biological children. But also adopted by Race and Spot. Roxy is brown and has black long hair, looking a bit more like her birth mother, while Rocket has short, reddish /blonde hair

I found this goldmine of information a while back, however the website itself is a bit confusing to navigate because it has a little bit of everything and some sections are more filled out than others. Be sure to check out the section on writing, it provides you with links to about ten different dictionaries on Maya glyphs plus downloadable pdfs on the Maya writing system and workbooks - can't recommend them enough, they're really easy-to follow but also quite in-depth. If you want to learn about the Maya writing system, it's a good place to start.

NZJDKDNDJ PLEASE DO TELL ALL YOU KNOW ABT HUITZILOPOCHTLI-XIUHCOATL-QUETZALCOATL PLEASEEE. I agree with you so much, how exciting it is to have someone who shared the same braincell as you😆 It seems that, instead of being an inspiration for one char, Quetzalcoatl became the source for many. You've made a good connection between Quetzalcoatl & Waxaklahun, though for me, I think Quetzalcoatl is hugely connected to Xiuhcoatl too. They almost have the same title (Quetzalcoatl is the God of life, light, and wisdom. Xiuhcoatl's epithet is "Sharer of Heat, Light, and Wisdom"), and Xiuhcoatl's possible sacrifice could be similar with Quetzalcoatl... man Quetzalcoatl's story of ressurecting humanity has huge implications for Natlan...
Btw, I think we also have an instance/reference of the Cycle of the Five Suns in Genshin already. The names of the Pyro Archons we know of (currently) from Xbalanque to Mavuika. Of course, there's possibly more Pyro Archons' names to come, but these Pyro Archons were the ones present in the (I believe not-so) final battle with Gosoythoth. We even have the equivalent of Chalchiuhtlicue, the deity of water and seas, in the form of Cochanina, the Pyro Archon from the People of the Spring, and in Mualani's signature lore, defeated Xiuhcoatl in a surfing competetion.
Regarding Xiuhcoatl's form... many believed the murals actually depicted Nibelung. And tbh, maybe there's some grain of truth in that. You've said that Mesoamerican deities tend to have multiple forms and identities, and I was reminded of this article sent by one of my readers in my new fic, (if you're reading this Cecelo, thank you so much for the comment and link !😚)
Where it's mentioned that a multiple forms/people seemingly different from each other are actually the depiction of one same person.
Maybe the murals depicted Nibelung... but also Xiuhcoatl, at the same time. Something something about sharing the same fate and what not, they both had huge connection with the Abyss and ruining the order brought by the Primordial One. Hmm... perhaps there's more to it but that's all I can think for now😅
(Btw I have a crack hc that Xiuhcoatl is the youngest among the Sovereigns. Besides the possibility that he wasn't the original Pyro Sovereign, I just find it fitting that he would use Nibelung's form if he was the youngest, like a little brother who imitated his elder brother because he saw him as 'cool', hehe. Plus, the elemental order in the game loading screen starts with Pyro, right? My delusional ass think that it's the Sovereigns' order of age😅 Though I heard somewhere that the order has been changed several times before we get the current version.)
Thanks again for sharing your thought !
So I have a lovely discussion with Ozerix, one of my readers in NotHS (Notes on the Holy Sovereign. Imma shorten it bcs man is it mouthful😅) regarding dragon's morality and Waxaklahun's cold and insane attitude. I think I want to share it in here too !
Regarding the dragons' morality... I wonder, how much of it was ingrained in their biology, or the result of their culture instead ?
Neuvillette probably the one that popped first in the mind, he needed 500 years to adapt to human society, but even then he was still quite reserved until his SQ. But remember, Neuvillette is a Sovereign. They're the gods of the dragons, & gods have different psyche than mortals. So I think Neuvi couldn't be the representative of all dragons in regard of their morality.
And in Natlan, it seems the Saurians have a rather similar concept of family to humans. For example ;
• Chasca's Qucusaurus family, complete with human drama & all.

(Chasca's momma bird even nags her about grandchildren like typical mothers lol.)
• The family of Ayo (Kachina's tepetlisaurus) in 5.3 AQ. He had grandparents who behaved just like human grandparents ! I was actually quite shocked when I played that part of the quest.

(I HATE the AQ with burning passion, but this part ? I have to admit, it's genuinely heartbreaking.)
• One could argue that their similarity is the result of them evolving alongside humans, thus attaining some of our behaviours, but it seems this familial relationship has been there for a long time. Remember Lianca ? She was raised by a dragon matriarch, & she proudly call herself her daughter. That sounds very human-like to me.

(From Chain Breaker lore, page 1. Lianca's mother sounded so sweet🥹)
I also theorized that WUK is the same type of dragons as Scylla from Remuria, the Prince of the Vishaps, or at least a Sovereign's attendant. It wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that WUK used to serve under Xiuhcoatl. And since these kind of dragons directly served under the Sovereigns, perhaps they too have the Sovereigns' detachment from mortal feelings. Kinda like Zhongli & his adepti, a god & their immortal servants.

(But the difference in their attitude is kinda funny tbh. "Oh, I shall seek an audience with the new Hydro Sovereign. Though I'm afraid I do not count as a Dragonborn now😓" vs "THE PYRO SOVEREIGN MUST DIE. MY SON FAILED TO SLAY HIM." What did Xiuhcoatl do that merited that attitude bro😭)
So maybe WUK's cold attitude towards his son is caused more by his personality/belief. Plus, seeing your civilization declining probably makes anybody to become more jaded & pragmatic, anyway. But then again, this is just my personal interpretation !
Btw if WUK is truly masquerading as humans in Natlan’s WQ, there's Legba, who claimed that "I, too, had many such... brilliant children." I find it disturbing tbh. Och-Kan had siblings ??? I wonder if we'll meet them- the ones who are alive, if there's any- in the future.

(But ngl, Waxaklahun/Legba here sounded more... nostalgic ? Soft ? Towards his children ? Perhaps it was the human Legba's true personality seeping in, but I find it... very contradictory with how he treated Och-Kan. Maybe he does not find his previous children to be failures, hence the praise. Or maybe... he used to be kinder ? Tbh I think the second option will be intriguing from the narrative perspective. Imagine seeing the evolution from a caring father to a cold sage driven mad by the fall of his civilization.)

Ok autism moment.
Zipacna is one of the villains in the Popol Vuh which is one of the few surviving texts that give us a look into Maya mythology. It tells the story of the K'iche' Maya from the beginning of time to the Spanish invasion. The story mainly centers around the exploits of two brother Hunaphu and Xbalanque who defeat multiple villains one of them being Zipacna. He is said to be a crocodile who creates mountains (hence his ability on the card)
The mayan character on his loincloth is crocodile.
His user is a classic maya era royal scribe. You can tell through him wearing metal and wearing covered sandals. The bg is inspired by photos of Palenque (i was gonna phone it in and do Chichen Itza since I can draw that in my sleep but then was like wait thats post classic and this is a classic character)
He follows a scaly motif which is seen by his duel disk being based of Kukulcan (Quetzacoatl in Nahuatl) a MesoAmerican God. His little card pouch has the character for scribe in it and his loincloth has my crude translation of yugioh into mayan script.
