touya had seemingly been waiting for your arrival for the last hour judging by the way he impatiently sat in the receptionist chair with one leg over the other, a blank sketchpad in his lap, and a bored expression on his face.

“let me see the tattoo,” was the first thing he said to you when you walked into the shop.

“well, hello to you too,” you cock an eyebrow at his demand, placing a coffee on the surface in front of him, “and i already showed you.”

“in person. i want to see it in person.”

touya pushes himself up and steps out of the desk. he motions for you to follow him to the back with his sketchpad under his arm and the coffee that he didn’t thank you for in his hand.

it’s a slow day today. not many of the artists are currently in and the ones that are, are all at their desks with headphones on and their attention glued to their ipads and sketchbooks.

you turn the corner and are met with his space in the shop where the walls are covered with printed flash designs, punk memorabilia, and old polaroids of him and various regulars and artists.

he abruptly turns around and faces you, almost making you step back into the wall.

“can i?”

with one hand resting on your shoulder, and the other reaching for the metal tab sitting in the middle of your chest, he looks down at you with a tentative expression.

you go hot for a moment. you meet his eyes and slowly nod your head before looking down, following his hands as he tugs the zipper halfway down.

you hear him let out a low whistle that only leaves you feeling shy as the dark ink sitting in the middle of your sternum comes into view.

“what do you think? still hate it?” you peer up to find him biting back a smirk.

touya’s hand goes sweaty as he looks down at you with your jacket shrugged off and your chest half exposed for him.

“yeah,” he slowly nods his head, tapping his fingers on your shoulder, “hate that you didn’t let me do this on you.”

your gaze flickers between his face and down at your tattoo. 

“i mean, there’s still room,” you shrug, “if you want, you can always make it better.”

he snorts, “i don’t know, babe. for once, i’m scared i’ll ruin ya. it’s pretty damn perfect.”

touya almost wants to run his fingers over it- feel the way the ink has settled into your skin.

“what did we say when i started coming to you regularly? the more of you on me, the better? remember that?”

his eyes come up to meet yours for the first time since revealing your tattoo. there’s a gleam in his eyes when he sees the smirk on your face.

“right.” he finally zips up your jacket, pulling it back over your bare shoulder, “then go ahead and tell me what you want, and i’ll give it to you.”

Friday was my last day at Valve.

Leaving a job full of people and projects you love is always hard, but I have a pretty good reason for it this time around:

Next Monday is my first day at Cyan.

Feels appropriate to announce this on Riven's anniversary, the game that is entirely to blame for who I am as a concept artist and Art Director. WHO WOULD I EVEN BE if I hadn't had my 11yo mind blown by the little wahrk gallows counting toy in the Rivenese schoolhouse??? It's a mystery.

For what it's worth, I think Campaign 3 suffers when compared to, to put it bluntly, pretty much anything else Critical Role has ever put out, as well as most actual play that I've watched/listened to. But I think it uniquely suffers when juxtaposed with a narrative that says "if you do not make rapid decisions you and others around you will die; if you spend too much time whining about how it's unfair that you are called to make these decisions, including ones that might challenge you, you and others around you will die; and if you do not above all prioritize community and deal with threats to that community - and expand your understanding of community to be a very broad one - you will be destroyed." It was jarring and hypocritical to watch Campaign 3's defenders who had been calling for the gods to be slaughtered for much of the campaign suddenly spin around and praise Bells Hells for finding [having handed to them] the nonviolent option because that's actually always the best one, don't you know; and I think EXU Divergence challenges not just that ideal but the concept that there's a universal solution. Sometimes the right thing is to hide; sometimes it's necessary to commit violence to prevent further violence. Sometimes the right thing is to secretly eat some of the cheese yourself to prevent you from dying; sometimes it's to be on the lookout for someone trying to take more of their share in a resource-limited community and to stop them. Sometimes the right thing is to carry others; sometimes it's to give them to someone stronger and more able. And above all, many of these choices will be extremely unfair and difficult and put you at risk, and you do still have to make them, and soon.
