My critique… I love collage! and you are the first person to submit one so cool beans. Thanks. I love the stacking figures and the fact that you are collaging onto a record adds a depth of meaning that wouldn’t be there if you had cut up the image on the cover and glued it to something else. That being said, the original image on the record is what is taking over the piece. Everything that you have added is very similar in tone and just creates a border for the man with the guitar rather than seeming like it is part of the piece. I would suggest trying to find a way to bring some of the colors/tones of the original record back into what you have added so that the viewers’ eye won’t gloss over the work you’ve done. The quickest way to achieve this would be to get some acrylic paint in a very light green and outline the man playing the piano. That’s what I would do! You might want to check out the link on composition that I’ll put below. I found it helpful and  I think you might too.

Making a Statement Through Art and Books

If you think about it, books can be considered a form of art. They speak to the soul, the words on each page coming together to express the views of the author/artist to the masses. Now, imagine what it would be like to experience a large statement art pieces made up entirely of written art.

  In 2011 “The Tower of Babel” was constructed in Buenos Aires to celebrate the city being named the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s 2011 World Book Capital.

The tower stood 82 feet tall (7 stories) and was composed of 30,000 books! Libraries, book lovers, and over 50 embassies came together to donate all of the books that made up the tower. Dozens of languages were represented in the books, allowing for visitors of all dialects to find a book in their own language.

  “The Tower of Babel” was the brainchild masterpiece of Argentinian artist Marta Minujín. In the words of the artist, “Building this tower has been a miraculous experience… A hundred years from now, people will say, 'There was a Tower of Babel in Argentina... and it didn't need translation because art needs no translation.'"

  As all of the books, which acted as bricks for the tower, were wrapped to protect them from the elements, once the exhibit ended, visitors was allowed to pick a book to take home with them! Even more amazing, the remaining books were put together to form a new book archive named the “Library of Babel.”

  This was not the first time that Marta Minujín used books as her main medium. In 1983 she created a sculpture known as the “Parthenon of Books.” A replica of Greece’s famed temple, the structure was also devised of 30,000 books. In this case it was made up of only banned books and was used to celebrate the newly gained freedom of expression that came with Argentina’s return to democracy in 1983.
