More than 300 Palestinian sports teams are calling to ban Israel from the Olympics over its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The Israeli offensive on Gaza has claimed the lives of 26,706 civilians, including 11,422 infants and children. Ninety percent of Palestinians are internally displaced and living in inhumane conditions with “no electricity, no food, no water, no fuel.” No functional hospitals. No mosques. No churches. No libraries. No schools. No universities. No bakeries. At this rate, the brutal Israeli regime will soon destroy every aspect of life in Gaza, including its sports.
Join the global campaign to peacefully disrupt the road to Paris 2024 calling on the IOC to #BanIsrael until it ends its crimes against Palestinians and recognizes our UN-stipulated rights.
Register your group to join the campaign
We thus urgently demand:
An immediate suspension of Israel from participation in all international sports until it fully complies with international law and sports regulations
For global and European sports governing bodies to immediately uphold their statutory obligations – especially their own rules on human rights and non-discrimination given Russian, South African and other precedents. This would include, inter alia, a ban on Israel competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, FIFA World Cup, and UEFA’s EURO.
For a deeper analysis on the rationale to suspend Israel from international sports, please review this paper (also available in Spanish) that will be sent to sports organisations.
Here’s what you can do.
1. Join the Global Day(s) of Action, March 15-17
Ahead of the IOC executive board meeting in Lausanne Switzerland (March 19-21), take the call from Palestinian teams to your National Olympic Committee, International Sports Federations and Recognized Sports Federations. Organize protests, sit-ins, peaceful disruptions, or awareness raising events on Israeli attacks on Palestinian sports. Register your group for more information.
2. Olympics qualifiers and events
From now until the Olympic Games start in July, the road to Paris will be filled with opportunities to remind the IOC that there is no place in the Olympics for genocide perpetrators. Earlier this month, four runners took the #CeasefireNow message to the Olympic Trials Marathon in Florida, crossing the finish line with Palestinian flags. Find information on Olympic time trials and qualifiers (also here) or other Olympics-related events in your area. Register your group for more information.
3. Kick Israeli apartheid out of sports
Is your country a signatory to the International Convention Against Apartheid in Sports? If so, it has an obligation to “take all appropriate action to secure the expulsion of a country practising apartheid from international and regional sports bodies.” Register your group to learn what you can do.
4. Sign the petition to ban Israel from world sports
Join more than 70,000 people from all over the world who have signed the petition calling for banning Israel from international sport.
Add your signature here
Israel has killed Palestinian Olympic Football coach Hani Al Masdar, destroyed the Palestinian Olympic Committee offices, and turned sports facilities into shameful mass detention and torture centers.
We can’t sit back as the IOC allows Israel to use the Olympics to sportswash its genocide in Gaza and its apartheid regime against Palestinians everywhere. Support the call from Palestinian teams.
Join the campaign to #BanIsrael from the Olympics and peacefully disrupt the road to the Paris 2024 games.

Louisiana’s coast is sinking. Advocates say the governor is undermining efforts to save it. (Washington Post)
For the past decade, Louisiana’s program for coastal protection has been hailed as one of the best in the country, after the devastation from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita pushed the state to shore up coastlines, repair levees and protect natural habitats.
Sign up for the Climate Coach newsletter and get advice for life on our changing planet, in your inbox every Tuesday.
But now, environmental advocates and experts say the state’s new Republican governor is undermining its coastal protection agency — the state’s first and strongest line of defense against climate change-induced sea level rise. In an open letter published this week and signed by more than 200 business leaders, environmental advocates and other experts, various groups warned against Gov. Jeff Landry’s plans to transform the state’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.
“The very future of our state is at stake,” the letter read.
Environmentalists say that the new governor’s actions could hobble the agency just as its work is most needed. The moves come as other right-leaning states are also cutting back on climate goals and even references to climate change. This month, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a bill erasing most mentions of climate change from state law. DeSantis is also poised tonullify the state’s targets for 100 percent renewable energy by 2050.
Since 2005, when Louisiana was devastated by two hurricanes, the coastal restoration agency has built or revamped over 300 miles of levees that hold back floodwaters, and restored dozens of miles of barrier islandsthat can absorb the pressure of waves and rising seas. The agency works to shore up these defenses in the face of future, stronger storms and higher seas.
Follow Climate & environmentFollow
Its work is critical, experts say: Louisiana is losing coastline at a dramatic rate. In the past century, the state has lost over 2,000 square miles of land; it could lose 2,000 more in the next 50 years, scientists predict. As sea level rise has accelerated, so has the loss of land. Wetlands are “drowning” in many areas of the state — covered by sea level rise faster than they can grow. In the coming decades, scientists say, the state could lose up to 75 percent of its natural buffer against hurricanes and storms.
A science-based agency under threat
Landry, who took office in January, has removedsix members of the coastal restorationagency’s board and suggested subsuming it into another, larger department. In a memo, the governor said that such moves could help avoid government operations existing in “distinct silos” and improve efficiency.
Environmental groups, on the other hand, say the shake-ups are undermining the work of an agency that is vitally important. The leadership and structural change could distract the agency from its plan for the coastline, slow down essential projects that can prevent flooding and allow politics to creep into the work of the science-based agency, experts and environmentalists say.
“It just seems like it’s chaotic at a time when we do not need that kind of chaos,” said Rebecca Triche, executive director of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation and one of the signatories on the letter.
Triche said that some of the experts taken off the board could have helped provide needed perspectives on the state’s coastal plans. The board is made up of some political appointees and some publicly elected government officials.“It just appears that independent voices are being removed,” she said.

Judd Legum at Popular Information:
The Florida Department of Education's civics training does not just train educators to teach Christian nationalism. The same program also includes a section on Communism's legacy. This has been a priority of Governor Ron DeSantis (R). In April, DeSantis signed legislation requiring all Florida students to be taught "the dangers and evils of Communism." “We will not allow our students to live in ignorance, nor be indoctrinated by Communist apologists in schools," DeSantis said. "To the contrary, we will ensure students in Florida are taught the truth about the evils and dangers of Communism.” Popular Information obtained the slides presented at the training from the Florida Freedom to Read Project, which received them from the Florida Department of Education after filing a public records request. The presentation includes factual information about mass murders ordered by the totalitarian leaders of communist and socialist governments. Stalin's "Great Terror," for example, involved the execution of an estimated 750,000 people who were seen as political dissidents. The training calls these systematic killings "the original cancel culture."
The Florida Department of Education training links the mass murder of perceived dissidents with criticism of Peterson. In 2022, The College of Psychologists of Ontario ordered Canadian psychologist and right-wing provocateur Jordan Peterson to receive coaching on "professionalism in public statements" after the licensing body found he made several "degrading, demeaning, and unprofessional comments." Peterson posted offensive tweets about trans actor Elliot Page about Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Yumi Nu.
Right-wing indoctrination in action in Florida’s schools exposed by Judd Legum’s Popular Information, by comparing “cancel culture” to mass murder.

In this review, I'll be covering three ear-worthy podcasts -- one from Bloomberg and two from iHeart Podcasts.
What these three podcasts have in common is their focus on people who have been --- and are still -- famous -- and one child who was trapped in a vortex of political battles, culture wars, and ethnic denigration.

Chess Piece: The Elián González Story
At the turn of the millennium, a five-year-old boy from Cuba found off the Florida coast on Thanksgiving became the most talked about child in America. Relatives in Miami — Cuban exiles — took the boy in, but his father in Cuba wanted him back.
The ensuing international custody battle over Elián González became its own mini Cold War, pitting Cuban exiles in Miami against supporters of Castro’s regime on an island just 90 miles away.
Now 25 years later, the story is revisited through the voices of people who lived it firsthand. For those of you not old enough to remember this event, be prepared. It's a heart-wrenching story.

Why Did Morning Joe Disappear from MSNBC and Where Is Joe Scarborough?
American cable news anchor, singer, actor, and former congressman Joe Scarborough is well-known for co-hosting Morning Joe, an AM news and chat show on MSNBC. Former politician Joe Scarborough is an American television presenter who co-hosts Morning Joe on MSNBC. On US television, his morning program is among the most seen shows. Conversely, the TV personality has skipped many episodes at different times, which raises questions. What then occurred on MSNBC regarding Morning Joe? Real Name Charles Joseph Scarborough Common Name Joe Scarborough Date of Birth April 9, 1963 Place of Birth Atlanta, Georgia Age 58 Years Old Star Sign Aries Gender Male Political Party Independent (2017 – Present) Nationality American Ethnicity White Sexual Orientation Straight Spouse Mika Brzezinski Residence New Canaan, Connecticut Education University of Alabama, University of Florida Religion Baptist Children 4 Parents Mary Joanna and George Francis Scarborough Siblings 2 Eye Colour Brown Hair Colour Blonde Profession Television Host, Attorney, Author, Former Politician Top Information He played quarterback in high school; after that, working as a teacher, he coached football before his law, politics, and television jobs. He played guitar for Dixon Mills, a band he founded in college. At thirty-one, he became the first Republican congressman in 121 years chosen for Florida's first district, serving into a fourth term until leaving in 2001. Published Rome Wasn't Burnt in a Day in 2005 Inducted into the College of Communication and Information Sciences Hall of Fame at University of Alabama Named to 2011's TIME 100, the magazine's list of significant figures Published The Florida Sun, a Pensacola independent weekly newspaper, and three books on conservative politics. Biography Former Congressman Joe Scarborough (R-Fla.) anchors "Morning Joe", offering on-air analysis and commentary. Scarborough's expertise consists of numerous previous guest appearances on both network and cable news shows and guest-hosting events on all of the leading cable news networks. He guest-hosted "Nachman" and other MSNBC live news specials as well. From 1994 until 2001, Joe Scarborough was a Congressman. Following his departure from office, President Bush designated him as a member of the President's Council on the 21st Century Workforce, where he participates alongside Labor Secretary Chao, national labour authorities and corporate executives. Joe Scarborough was on the Armed Services Committee and the Judiciary Committee while serving in the United States House of Representatives. Additionally, a partner with Levin, Papantonio, and Joe Scarborough focuses his work on environmental law. Did Joe Scarborough Leave "Morning Joe?" Joe neither declared any intentions to depart the show nor left Morning Joe. Still, it is not unusual for the hosts—Joe, Mika Brzezinski, and Willie Geist, among others—to occasionally miss days from the program. Joe missed the program opening the New York trial of former President Donald Trump on April 15, 2024. Viewers of Morning Joe turned to social media to voice their perplexity at Joe's absence on TV that day. So, where is Joe's TF right now? One person posted on X during the program on X Morning Joe. "No, Joe, once more," said One of the biggest news days ever. I'll watch, but the show is boring without him," another observer wrote. Leading segments and including various guest commentators, Joe's wife, Mika, took the stage on the broadcast that day. His disappearance went unpackled and was not immediately addressed. Morning Joe Vanished From Msnbc The show still runs every weekday from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. ET ( Eastern time). Co-hosts include Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, and Willie Geist today. Starting on April 9, 2007, the show has been broadcast on MSNBC, replacing Imus in the Morning. Joe Scarborough Is In Where? He hasn't left Morning Joe and continues to co-host it on MSNBC. Scarborough took a hiatus on July 31, 2023, to spend time with his family, heal from medical problems, and publish a new book. Initially claimed as a two-week hiatus, the host returned on broadcast on August 2, 2023. The leading talk show presenter was missing once more in late August. The video timelines of the episode on YouTube show Scarborough missing for one week, from 28 August 2023 to 3 September 2023. On September 4, 2023, he returned on broadcast. Joe Scarborough Illness Although Joe Scarborough's medical situation is unknown, he has already remarked about his battles with anxiety and despair. Fans have hypothesized that his sporadic TV absence is related to health issues. Scarborough had a heart attack in 2003, which caused a setback. The television presenter had five operations to fix attack-related damage. Presumably, it was one of the five repair operations. The presenter took time away from television in November 2017 to recover from a medical operation. Mika Brzezinski has not departed and remains co-host of Morning Joe. Since its launch in 2007, Mika—another broadcaster's wife—has been on the chat program. However, Mika took a sabbatical on July 31, 2023, but returned on August 2, 2023, just like her husband did. She resumed broadcast on September 5, 2023, after another sabbatical on August 28, 2023. Early Childhood And Growing Up Born April 9, 1963, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., Charles Joseph Scarborough was born to Mary Joanna Clark and George Francis Scarborough. His father made business his life. Scarborough grew up with two brothers. At Florida's 'Pensacola Catholic High School,' he played quarterback. He then enrolled in "The University of Alabama," where he graduated in 1985 with a BA in history. Scarborough then graduated with a Juris Doctor from the "University of Florida College of Law" in 1990. He made CDs with the band "Dixon Mills," wrote lyrics, and played the guitar at college. He also helped with the " Calling on Robert E. Lee" musical CD. Before pursuing a law, politics, and journalism career, Scarborough also taught high school pupils and coached football. Debates And Controversies Scarborough attacked the Democratic National Committee during Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign for safeguarding and guaranteeing her presidential candidacy. Likewise, he attacked Donald Trump in an August 2016 op-ed for "The Washington Post". Scarborough reasoned that the "Republican Party should revoke his presidential nomination." After Scarborough declared he would not vote for Trump and asserted that a third-party candidate should be selected, he attacked Scarborough on his show 'Morning Joe,' in 2016. Scarborough, Brzezinski, and two other panellists called Trump's comment about a judge of Mexican background "completely racist" in June of that year. Covering Trump's presidency, Scarborough and his co-host Brzezinski presented an unfavourable picture. Trump answered with a harsh "tweet," calling the hosts names and criticizing both in June 2017. Many "Republican" legislators sharply denounced the ''tweet.'' Scarborough's ''tweet'' on the death of multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was also well-known for being a sex offender, drew strong criticism in August 2019. Read the full article

Leadership Pasco Rolls Out Bus Tour 2.0
Bus Tour 2.0 made history on March 12, 2024, as the first Leadership Pasco alumni and community mobile networking and educational event. It was an idea from a board meeting executed through the leadership of board member Kathy Masucci '22 and the alumni committee. Leadership Pasco Rolls Out Bus Tour 2.0, an Alumni and Community Experience The day began with a light breakfast and networking at Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus, Wesley Chapel. From there the sold-out event group boarded a 55 passenger Olympus Limo motor coach (with new bus smell) with destinations in Central and East Pasco. During the ride attendees learned about the major Pasco business and construction developments happening from the people in the know. Hope Kennedy, North Tampa Bay Chamber President shared so much about current and future Pasco demographics, business, and plans. She also spoke about the growth of infrastructure to match the numbers of new rooftops. The group also heard from Michael Wolf '24, Vice President, Columnar/DoubleBranch and Phillips & Jordan and Art Phelps, Senior Vice President, Industrial and Commercial, Phillips and Jordan, Inc. as we viewed the expansive mixed-use development, DoubleBranch, formerly known as Pasco Town Center. The project will feature 4 million square feet of industrial development, 725,000 square feet of offices, 400,000 square feet of retail, 3,500 housing units and 300 hotel beds on a 965-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Interstate 75 and State Road 52. At completion, DoubleBranch will generate over $600 million in long-term economic impact on an estimated $2 billion buildout for the surrounding area. As companies locate, the development is anticipated to be home to 6,000 jobs including many in the logistics, life sciences, and healthcare target industry sectors. Mike Bishop '17, Senior Vice President, Pasco Economic Development Council (PEDC) spoke about projects the PEDC is involved in around the county and answered many questions along the way about land for sale, recently sold, or in development. The tour learned more about PEDC's mission and structure. PEDC is the lead economic development organization dedicated to the overall growth and prosperity of Pasco County through the development of a sustainable and diversified economy. Pasco EDC is a private, non-profit organization that promotes countywide economic development and continues to be a strong partnership funded by corporate and public investors focused on the economic vitality of Pasco County. Bishop also spoke about SMARTstart Small Business program and other tools for small business success. The bus drove to the new Moffitt Innovation Campus, also known as Speros for a tasty lunch and presentation by Casey Cane, Moffitt, Speros FL, Pasco County Global Innovation Center. Speros is a 775-acre Pasco County campus to be used for the future of revolutionary cancer treatment and research. The campus will feature 16 million square feet of lab, office, manufacturing, and clinical space. Several hundred acres will remain natural and a habitat for Florida wildlife. The tour learned the name Speros, is a derivative of the Latin verb “Sperare,” meaning “to hope” or “to look forward to." Approximately 14,000 Moffitt team members will be employed on campus at projectcompletion. Harold Sample '91, was an attendee of the tour and shared Pasco County history with us, along with sights such as Angeline Academy of Innovation, Land 'O Lakes, and the Metro Lagoon communities of Eperson in Wesley Chapel and Mirada in San Antonio. Sample and Kurt Conover '92 retired from conducting our class Bus Tour with Class of 2024, and new leaders of Michele Baker '97 and Frances Werner-Wakins '11 will be taking on the two-day program in 2025. Both attended Bus Tour 2.0 and have been working with Sample and Conover on next-year's program day. The tour traveled back to the Wiregrass Recreation Center where they learned more about the tourism industry that is putting Pasco on the map. Tourism Day is our newest program day, so most of our alumni have not experienced the full day. Adam Thomas '24 Director of Florida's Sports Coast, our tourism bureau, and co-chair of Tourism Day presented that component along with a tour and details on Wiregrass Recreation Center by Ronnie Outen, Operations Manager and Basketball Director. Attendees concluded with an optional happy hour at Skybox, Wesley Chapel’s only rooftop bar, at Residence Inn. It was a beautiful day, and a great way to travel around the county to learn from the best and have some great conversations with new and old friends. Many of the attendees are members of the community who plan to learn more about Leadership Pasco or who have plans to apply for Class of 2025.
