Explosion at rail bridge deep inside Russia shows Ukraine’s reach (Washington Post) Ukraine hinted Monday that its agents were responsible for an explosion on a Russian railway bridge used to transport ammunition, in what appears to be the latest successful operation targeting infrastructure deep behind enemy lines as Ukrainian forces struggle against advancing Russian troops. Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, the GUR, said Monday that the explosion on the railway bridge in Russia’s Samara region—about 650 miles from the Ukrainian border—occurred about 6 a.m. local time. The GUR did not directly assert responsibility for the attack, but this wouldn’t be the first time Ukraine’s security services have targeted military rail routes in Russia. The Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU, was responsible for December explosions on railway links between Russia and North Korea in the Buryatia region, about 3,750 miles east of Ukraine, according to Ukrainian intelligence officials.

China drops ‘peaceful reunification’ reference to Taiwan (Reuters) China will boost its defence spending by 7.2% this year, fuelling a military budget that has more than doubled under President Xi Jinping’s 11 years in office as Beijing hardens its stance on Taiwan, according to official reports on Tuesday. China also officially adopted tougher language against Taiwan as it released the budget figures, dropping the mention of “peaceful reunification” in a government report delivered by Premier Li Qiang at the opening of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s rubber-stamp parliament, on Tuesday. Li Mingjiang, a defence scholar at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore, said that despite China’s struggling economy, Taiwan is a major consideration in Beijing’s defence spending. “China is showing that in the coming decade it wants to grow its military to the point where it is prepared to win a war if it has no choice but to fight one,” Li said.

Maritime clashes (Foreign Policy) Chinese vessels blocked and then collided with Philippine coast guard ships off the disputed Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea on Tuesday, injuring four Philippine crew members. The Philippines accused China of trying to “illegally impede or obstruct a routine resupply and rotation mission.” It demanded China leave the maritime territory immediately and summoned a top Chinese diplomat to Manila, the Philippine capital, to protest Beijing’s “aggressive” actions. China accused the Philippines’ ships of illegally intruding into Chinese waters. Both China and the Philippines lay claim to the Second Thomas Shoal. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that Beijing’s territorial assertions in the shoal have no legal basis, a decision that China rejects. Since then, Beijing has repeatedly sought to demonstrate its presence around the Second Thomas Shoal as well as another contested shoal.

Friday 7 August 1998 and Saturday 8 August 1998 - Double feature - overfull compartment to Zürich with the Sommer Spezial - Street Parade Energy 98 - a day full of whistles

Friday 7 August 1998 Hi everyone Are you all keeping cool, reasonably hydrated and safe from natural disasters? Some parts of the USA are experiencing heat waves, and others may also be experiencing heavy rain. As for Europe, from this Wednesday the 8th August it should cool down. I heard about the 110+ F / 45+ C temperatures in Spain / Portugal. Temperatures you would expect in Las Vegas.

I would like to take a moment with my twenty year stories, and kind of look back on an incident that took place in Tanzania and in Kenya. And we would soon learn of an entity which would shake up the USA about three years later under a different presidential administration. But if you are reading this, then I have survived. The events took place about 9:30 AM Munich time. I wanted to be as objective as I can about this. It is a tragedy indeed, that any building representing the USA overseas permanent diplomatic mission, is bombed in an otherwise peaceful nation. To not name the individuals or groups, for reasons of not giving them any publicity, I leave it to the reader, to look up the 7th August 1998 Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam. I also do not want to comment on the US government at the time, their actions after this incident, pair of embassy bombings, I think if you are interested to know the details that you might be able to look them up on your own time and draw your own conclusions.

I consider myself lucky to only hear about the incident on the radio news and in the Abendzeitung (evening newspaper), and not have the US Consulate either in München or Frankfurt am Main having been bombed. Otherwise it would no longer be safe for me to remain in Germany that year, and I would not complete my Werkstudenttätigkeit at Widgetmeister International.

So with that in mind, I was glad to know that I had two first class train reservations for Saturday 8th August 1998, from München Hbf to Zürich HB and back, for about 178.00 D-Mark. I also had to get a reservation to the Hotel Rümlang as that was the only online hotel for a cheap price that I could find, I think for CHF 120 including breakfast (CHF 110 without) - because the youth hostel on Mutschellenstrasse 114 in Zürich was fully booked. What happened that day on the train had nothing to do with the actions in Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam. But I was happy to get away from everything and have a good time.

There was not much to say for today, the 8th and 9th I am not sure. Have a good day / afternoon / evening / night.

Its about time for AA 1216 to board so ill leave you with my Saturday 8th August 1998 story, to forget about the days events from Friday the 7th August ????????, at least for the weekend.

That event was certainly frightening to hear about, but it did not change my plans for the weekend of 8th and 9th August to go to Zürich for the Street Parade.

To give a summary of the day's events

made sure I had my passport and two train tickets to and from Zürich HB

had passport stamped in Bregenz by Austrian border guards

Arrived about 12:30 PM in Zürich HB, went to tracks 21-24 for S-Bahn train to Rümlang via Oerlikon and Glattbrugg ZH

checked into Hotel Rümlang, left clothes bag in room and took S-Bahn to Zürich HB, about 2 PM

toured around the Limmatquai, Bürkliplatz, Paradeplatz, Utoquai, Quaianlagen Park

about 8:30 PM tried to find place to eat in Niederdorferstrasse, everything full, even Johanniter

Did one more walk along Niederdorferstrasse past the Grossmünster

walked to Zürich HB and had a hot dog for dinner, less of a crowd about 10:30 PM

took S-Bahn about 11:15 PM to Rümlang, arrive at hotel about 11:55 PM

sleep That was pretty much my first day in Zürich for that weekend.

The 8th August 1998 was a sunny Saturday morning, where I had planned to go to Zürich for the Street Parade. As there was no room at the Zürich Hostel on Mutschellenstrasse 114, I had to plan for a night at a regular hotel. There were no online bookable hotels that I could find for 8th August in Zürich, that were below 140 CHF, so I found one in Rümlang, on the west side of the Kloten airport runway, for 120 CHF with breakfast. I also had two tickets, 89 D-Mark apiece, to go from München to Zürich, and Zürich to München on the 9th.

I woke up about 6:30 AM, took a shower, had a small snack, took my supply of about six soda cans to add to my nonalcoholic swig bottle (usually coke or similar and Fanta Lemon or Fanta Orange), and shut off my alarm so on Sunday it would not disturb anyone. Then I was ready to go to the bus stop to get to München Hbf. I took the line 37 to Arabellapark, then U-4 to Hauptbahnhof. By the time I arrived on the main line platforms, I found the SBB first class car where my ticket was reserved for. About 8:30 AM the train left, and the compartment was overfilled, namely seven instead of six people. One guy I think was about 19 years old had his girlfriend along, planning to go to the Street Parade. His mother was also in the compartment. It was not easy to get photos from the compartment window, but I managed a few. The train announcement was a failure, all the German portion was garbled or even momentarily cut off, and the English portion was marginally understandable. The audio equipment on the train was not doing well that day.

About 9:15 AM the train arrived in Buchloe, my ticket was punched, and I was free to go to the dining car. The dining car had full service that day. I ordered scrambled eggs with ham and potatoes (similar to those from the song "Chatanooga Choo Choo"). The waiter also served coffee, with one pitcher for coffee and the other for heated milk. That tasted great. The train arrived about 9:40 AM in Memmingen. The German border police made a preemptive search, and while I was eating my breakfast still, two of the men asked me to go into the corridor (this is a true story) and they looked everywhere in my George-Costanza-wallet. ?????????????? They found only D-Mark and some Swiss Francs, but no drugs of any kind. They told me to put everything back the way it was and they let me go back to my breakfast. That was not a particularly fun experience but at least I was free. Most of the rest of the journey went without incident, other than the Austrian border police giving me a stamp in my passport for Bregenz, ????and the Swiss conductor taking a look at my ticket and giving it a punch as well. The train did not stop in Oerlikon, so I had to go to Zürich HB. The train arrived at 12:30 in Zürich HB. I had to go underground to the then-platforms 21 to 24 (now they are 41 to 44) and find the S-Bahn train to Rümlang via Oerlikon and Glattbrugg. Also I had to pay the 8.80 CHF for the 24 hour pass for the Zürich fare zone.

Because I did not know the way to the hotel (no Google in August 1998 and most people did not have cellphones), I asked the way, and a bus driver going off his shift offered to take me there and it was a half mile drive. He did not ask for any money and even when I offered, he declined. The Swiss can be very kind that way. I checked into my room for 120 CHF. It was on the ground floor, no air conditioning but with openable window, and was adjacent to an elementary school that was closed for the summer break. Rümlang other than the planes flying by, due to it being close to the Zürich international airport, was very quiet.

I walked to the Rümlang train station and caught the S-Bahn to Zürich HB. It was full of people headed to the city center. Most were heading towards the General Guisan Quai and Bellevueplatz, about a mile south where the Limmat opens up to Lake Zürich. People were more or less dressed like at the Love Parade in Berlin, that is where I heard about the Street Parade. The day was mostly sunny, I think the temperature was around 85 to 90 F, about 30 to 32 C.

The main point of action is at General Guisan Quai turning at Bellevueplatz on to Utoquai, that is the route of the Lovemobiles, where people are on caged flat-bed trucks travelling about 3 mph. In 1998 they went in a clockwise direction, but every subsequent Street Parade I attended, 2003, 2004 and 2017, they went counterclockwise in the opposite direction. Lovemobiles may have about 30 to 40 people dancing along to music, and between the Lovemobiles, there can be about 100+ people dancing along. One of the difficult jobs are, the Lovemobile drivers, and also the security staff, who make sure that dancers, officially affiliated or not, are kept safe. The Lovemobiles take up the same space as an 18 wheeler truck and must be yielded the right of way that they deserve. Also the police and city janitors have it rough too, keeping the peace and keeping the streets clean (I feel bad for the janitors for the day after, cleaning up the broken glass bottles on the street)

The other places to see music played, are along the Limmatquai, Bürkliplatz, Paradeplatz, and the Niederdorferstrasse. All those were full of pedestrians, and the roads that normally had trams running, they were rerouted for the day. For example, if I wanted to go from the hostel in Wollishofen, I would have to take the tram 7 to the Neue Börse and take the S-4 or S-10 to Zürich HB.

It was so easy to lose sense of time. About 8 PM I was getting hungry and wanted to find somewhere to eat. The Niederdorferstrasse was so full, most places had no seating left. Even the Brasserie Johanniter was full, and maybe there would be a half hour waiting time. So I went back to the Bellevueplatz. About 10:30 PM I decided to call it a day, go back to Zürich HB, and find some place not with such a long line. There was a place selling hot dogs. I had two hot dogs and a Sprite, for about 5.50 CHF. I sat around for a half hour. At 11:10 PM I went to the platforms 21 to 24 for the train to Rümlang. I caught the train and it was still quite full. The train reached Rümlang at 11:35 PM and I walked back to the hotel. It must have been 11:55 PM when I reached my room. There was no curfew but I had to use my key to enter from the outside.

My room had a color TV with international channels. I watched a bit of the Swiss channels, then M6 with French videos, such as"Cruel Summer" with Alliage and Ace of Base, same people who sang "all that she wants", "Soirée Disco" by Boris https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg5YSG_SDac, "Je danse le MIA" by IAM and "This is how we party" by Soap. I went to sleep around 1:10 AM. That was one long day and I was worn out from so much walking and dancing and such.

Next is a nice relaxing morning at the hotel, roundabout journey in the Forch valley and back through Uster and Stettbach, lunch at the Brasserie Johanniter, something different on the seasonal menu, journey up to the Uto-Kulm viewing point, and train ride home.

Ten more days of living in Europe and eventually I fly home. I will try to write stories in advance and have them ready on the exact days from 20 years ago. Hope you enjoyed so far. Until next time. Gute Nacht!

ZVECAN, Kosovo (AP) — The NATO-led peacekeeping force said on Monday that 25 of its troops were injured in clashes with ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo after they tried to take over the offices of one of the municipalities where ethnic Albanian mayors took up their posts last week.

The Serbs clashed with NATO troops and Kosovo police in the municipality of Zvecan, 45 kilometers (28 miles) north of the capital. The soldiers fired tear gas and stun grenades to protect the Kosovar officers and disperse protesters, according to witnesses. The assembled Serbs responded by throwing rocks and other hard objects at them.

“Several soldiers of the Italian and Hungarian KFOR contingent were the subject of unprovoked attacks and sustained trauma wounds with fractures and burns due to the explosion of incendiary devices,” said the NATO peacekeepers in a statement.

Some Kosovo police vehicles and one belonging to journalists were damaged and sprayed with Serb nationalist symbols.

Addressing the nation late Monday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said he would spend the night with his troops on the border with Kosovo who were placed on the highest state of alert on his orders last week. He said 52 Serbs were injured in the clashes, three seriously, and four were detained.

“The consequences (of the clashes) are big and grave and the sole culprit is (Kosovo Prime Minister) Albin Kurti,” said Vucic. He referred to the Albanian forces in the north Kosovo as “occupiers.”

“I repeat for the last time and I beg the international community to make sure Albin Kurti sees reason,” Vucic said. “If they don’t, I am afraid it will be too late for all of us.”

The violence was the latest incident as tensions soared over the past weekend, with Serbia putting the country’s military on high alert and sending more troops to the border with Kosovo, which declared independence from Belgrade in 2008.

Kosovo and Serbia have been foes for decades, with Belgrade refusing to recognize Kosovo’s sovereignty.

The United States and the European Union have stepped up efforts to help solve the Kosovo-Serbia dispute, fearing further instability in Europe as Russia’s war rages in Ukraine. The EU has made it clear to both Serbia and Kosovo they must normalize relations if they’re to make any progress toward joining the bloc.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described the situation in Kosovo as “worrisome,” blaming the U.S. and NATO for claiming dominance in that part of the world.

“A big ‘explosion’ is brewing in the center of Europe, in the very place where, in 1999, NATO carried out aggression against Yugoslavia,” he said from Nairobi, Kenya, referring to the NATO-led intervention in 1999 that stopped a bloody Serb crackdown against ethnic Albanian separatists.

On Monday, Kosovar police and the NATO-led Kosovo Force, or KFOR, were seen protecting the municipal buildings in Zvecan, Leposavic, Zubin Potok and Mitrovica, four municipalities in the north that held early elections last month.

The votes were largely boycotted by ethnic Serbs, who form the majority in those areas. Only ethnic Albanian or other smaller minority representatives were elected to the mayoral posts and assemblies.

Serbia’s prime minister, Ana Brnabic, criticized the international handling of events in Kosovo, saying that KFOR was “not protecting the people … they are protecting the usurpers,” apparently referring to the new mayors.

“But we must protect the peace. Peace is all we have,” she said.

KFOR has increased its presence in the four northern municipalities. It called on all sides to refrain from actions that could cause escalation and urged both “Belgrade and Pristina to engage in the EU-led dialogue.”

U.S. Ambassador Jeff Hovenier met with President Vjosa Osmani and then together with other western powers’ ambassadors — the U.S., France, Italy, Germany and the U.K. known as the Quint — with Prime Minister Albin Kurti, urging him to take steps to de-escalate the situation and reduce tensions.

Last Friday, ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo tried to block recently elected ethnic Albanian officials from entering municipal buildings. Kosovo police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and let the new officials into the offices.

The U.S. and the EU condemned Kosovo’s government for using police to forcibly enter the municipal buildings.

The conflict in Kosovo erupted in 1998 when separatist ethnic Albanians rebelled against Serbia’s rule, and Serbia responded with a brutal crackdown. About 13,000 people, mostly ethnic Albanians, died. NATO’s military intervention in 1999 eventually forced Serbia to pull out of the territory. Washington and most EU countries have recognized Kosovo as an independent state, but Serbia, Russia and China haven’t.

Im one those people who have never been in a relationship prior to the one i was in just recently im 23 years old. the relationship was barely 3 months old

you'd think a relationship between people who genuinely love and care for each other would last atleast a year or so atleast that's what i thought. seeing as im no expert in dating cos this was my first time in a serious and intentional relationship.

We met last year december a day before my graduation.

he had travelled to the country from states for his cousin's wedding which was supposed to take place a little after a week.

it was a dinner party to welcome them to the country and i was contracted to cover the event which i did. i was so focused on my work the whole time and i hadnt noticed him i only did when he was called to introduce himself and his siblings.

when i tell you this man's smile threw me off balance a lil bit. he had theeeeee brightest smile the kind that makes other people happy, an inviting and open smile and while i was taking all that in he started talking and i instantly knew i liked this man his voice was heavely like it was so perfect it was other- worldly which i would later tell him everytime we talked how much i liked his voice when we got together.

he was so gentle with his siblings and basicallly with everything his words,people.

we actually dint interact the whole of the evening till after the dinner when people were leaving, me and my colleagues were waiting for our uber when he came to where we was and hugged me then thank me for coming through and the first thing that came out of my mouth was "are you the one getting married?" im sorry i couldnt risk losing this perfect man to anyone lol so i had to make sure he wasnt the one getting married. he laughed softly and replied no. he told us goodnight then left

i actually dint think id ever see him again till after we got to the office. he was supposed to remain this mystery man in my mind one i will never be able to forget. my colleague told me and my girl irene we were supposed to travel with them lets call him person X we were to travel with person X and his family to their hometown for the whole weekend

oml i couldnt conceal my excitement. you know what that meant? it meant i would be able to spend more time with him and know a lil bit about him you know. i suddenly wasnt interested in my graduation which was to be virtual btw so when i got to my place I called my mom told her i got a gig i will be travelling outside Nairobi for the weekend but as soon as I get back we can have a small family dinner to celebrate me graduating.

Wangechi a marketer by profession and a traveller by passion is a solo traveller that has travelled to about 20 countries and counting, and over 200 towns.  All as a means to learn about different cultures, landscapes and people.  She seeks to break stereotypes, inspire others to travel and to promote World Peace and Love. Visiting her blog you will learn lots about her travels around Kenya and Africa but also Asia.  From enjoying the landscapes of Turkana in Kenya to interacting with the Japanese culture to the Taj Mahal, Wangeci has it all laid in her blog.  I particularly followed her trip to Northern Kenya in Turkana, and to say the least I plan to tour the north more.

I meet her during the Rusinga cultural festival in 2018. The way she indulged with the culture and rocked a dance move with the dancers at the event is a sure displace on how passionate she is of culture, and travel in general.

  Tembea na Mo

Maureen’s most recent trip to Lamu, made me want to leave my day job and travel to Lamu again. Mo’s world on social media brought back my most memorable visit to this Unesco World Heritage city.  Tembea na Mo is another of Kenya’s travel blogger that travels to explore, learn, have fun and tell her story while at it.  Her travels span from Nairobi, Lamu, Mwanza in Tanzania, to Ethiopia and Morocco among other destinations.

Clalffin or Clal as she refers to herself wishes to wake up and see the sunrise in a new place every day.  That how she describes herself on her blog.  A read through her blog, one is hooked through the various captivating stories on backing in Kenya, travelling solo, sights and sounds from Kisumu to chasing waterfalls in Kenya. The life of travel demands sacrifice remains very true to a majority of us who travel not just for fun but to share and inspire others to explore.

  Diary of A Muzungu –Uganda

Across the border in Uganda is the Diary of a Muzungu.  This blog is everything Uganda, from hidden gems, the food, and the culture to just being a Muzungu in a foreign land.  Charlotte or ‘Nagawa’ as she describes herself on her blog is quite an avid traveller across East Africa.  She encourages her readers to join her on a tour of Uganda on foot, by train, plane, boda-boda, bus or even a dugout canoe now that should get you packing for a tour of Uganda.

  Rayhab Gachango -Potentash  

Although this is a lifestyle blog.  Her Travel category will definitely inspire one to explore Kenya.  Rayhab Gachango is quite an experienced writer and the lifestyle category winner in the 2018 lifestyle category under the Kenya blog awards.

EvejWanderluster 

Eve is currently in the car hire business and at the same time travel blogging.  She is constantly scouting for the best affordable packages allowing her to travel within her budget.  Her trip to Kisumu in January was quite an inspiration to tour the Kit-Mikayi.

  Torik Diaries

Tori Karambu’s blog is not only a travel blog but one that covers other topical issues.  She has a theme for each day that includes women, food, kids, lifestyle and men. Her article on ten tips on how to travel to Mombasa on a budget offers young and first-time travellers practical travel tips.  The blog is a year old, and judging by the content this far, it’s one to look out for, as it keeps growing.  Tomorrow will definitely be better.

  Finally, this list would not be complete if I did not honour myself.  Building a brand: kenyatalii.com has not been an easy ride.  Every week, day month and years that pass as we keep striving to be the best that we can be in the travel blogging and travel content creation space, is in itself an inspiration to us to keep doing what we love and creating a lasting brand.
