"But if we don’t at least stand fast and hope for better, this all becomes pointless.”
The grim ragged black robes and spine-chilling shrieks of Despair demons hadn’t flourished both here and near Haven for no reason. She was right. He knew what it looked like when someone had given up, that exhausted, crushed hollowness to the eyes. He’d seen it in shaving mirrors and still water for years. Felt the dark tide of it trying to catch hold again when he wasn’t busy, so he found something else to occupy him. Telling him that everything he touched turned to rot, that there would never be anything but the same cycle of violence, fear, anger, and despair that had permeated his life for almost a dozen years now.
Rinda Hawke in those final days had that look, apparently finally realizing that there could be no reconciliation in Kirkwall, and that everything she had fought for over years couldn’t stop something. Nobody knew quite what, until the chantry exploded in a column of fire, but the dread and anxiousness had been there like a miasma across the city.
Easy to advocate for hope naively, in a way that ignored the reality of pain and hardship. But Clerra had earned the right to claim it. She had lost and suffered, and something about that came through. He’d seen how people responded to her. And, well, if this one woman, grieving and far out of her depth, could struggle onward despite the weight of expectations placed upon her, he could hardly do otherwise. “Wise words.” He finished the last of the tea, thanked her again, and headed to bed.

Bring back Ariane from witch hunt! She was literally the only one. sigh
my hope for da:d is a hot warrior woman that isn’t basically a cop
#Ariane#dragon age witch hunt#Dragon Age Origins#witch hunt#also at first I read this post as ''hot warrior woman that IS basically a cop'' and I was like OP ??? huh?#that can't be right ... ah yes I read it incorrectly#anyway#I agree#text post#textposts#Dragon Age#dragon age the veilguard#da4#dragon age 4#Aveline Vallen#Cassandra Pentaghast#cassandra allegra portia calogera filomena pentaghast#Evangeline de Brassard#Tassia#posts I commented on#totally agree with OP's tags that cass could have been interesting (or rather imo she is interesting)#what bothers me is that she is presented too much as this nice seeker lady who comes from literal royalty#and it seems like we are supposed to like her a lot and sympathise with her she is fangirl of books and nerdy and secretly a romantic#and the writing just completely glosses over the negative aspects of her#I feel like she doesn't truly need to face the atrocities that her order has committed (and she is at the top of the hierarchy btw)#she always maintains a kinda neutral position (sure she had a mage lover and maybe she feels bad that the cure for tranquility was hidden)#but her personal responsibility is kinda brushed off by the narrative (she herself is presented as a good person even if she is literally#the right hand of the divine and not just some rando who was recruited) and that doesn't make sense but we are supposed to just accept it#humanising rando soldiers in a bad system would be one thing but they picked someone who is royalty and a seeker above even the templars

bioware be like, there are some good templars out there! and then point to a bunch of worst templars ever.
if you can't be bothered to actually write a redemption arc maybe just pick one of the few templars that don't have a long rap sheet of being a horrible person.
#this is about cullen and evangeline in particular#i get you want interesting love interests but “they are good now” is not an interesting characterization#anti cullen rutherford#anti evangeline de brassard#dragon age critical#anti templar

Codex entry: Cole (1/3)
"His name is Cole.
He's not that old, perhaps twenty years, no more. He has blond hair that hangs in front of his eyes; he wears dirty leathers—perhaps the only clothes he owns. He was there when you found Rhys in the templar crypt, but you couldn't see him. Nobody can, and those who do forget him. Just like you are right now.
Remember the dream."
—A letter allegedly written by former Knight-Commander Evangeline de Brassard; found in the Spire in the aftermath of the mage uprising.

Realistically, I know the reason Cullen was the Inquisition Commander instead of Samson or Evangeline De Brassard was because Cullen was more popular than either of them.
However I like to think another reason was that if either of then were commander and you tried to support ANYONE else other than the Mage Rebellion, they would get so pissed at you that they'd support it anyway.
Also, Evangeline would not get along with Cassandra since Cass is still very loyal to the seekers and Evangeline fought the former Lord Seeker in a sewer in a one on one battle so an entire circles worth of mages could escape the rite of annulment right before telling said boss of hers that he could take his holier than thou attitude and stuff it.
So she kinda left the seekers I think.

Summary:
A final request from the now Former Inquisitor Trevelyan brings Rhys and Evangeline to the steps of the Starkhaven chantry.
“Are you certain you are fine with this?” Evangeline asks. Rhys can hear the doubt in her tone, her armor clinking as she folds her arms over her chest, looking up at the towering chantry looming above them.
Rhys grimaces down at the letter in his hands, rereading the note.
Rhys and Evangeline-
You’ve done good work for the Inquisition in the past. I have one more favor to ask, if you’ll forgive me.
A contact of mine requires assistance tracking down one of Marian Hawke’s companions. I recommended you as maybe the best I know for this job. I am to understand there is a hefty reward should you succeed, though I cannot divulge a name for the contact at this time as they request anonymity. I can only speak to their character, that they are a good sort and good for the reward.
Let me know if this is of interest and I will send a messenger with further details.
-The Former Inquisitor, Trevelyan
He swaps the note over for the sloppily copied address he’d scribbled on the back of a cloth napkin.
The best I know…
He tries to recall the small buzz of pride he’d felt reading that line for the first time weeks ago, but it feels far away, replaced by doubt. He sighs.
“Why wouldn’t I be?,” he mutters as he folds up the letter and address, tucking them away in the folds of his traveling cloak. “Though, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised.”
“The Starkhaven Chantry,” Evangeline quietly agrees.
“Certainly is a…tall thing, isn’t it?” he comments, tilting his head back and raising a hand to shield his face. Rhys’s eyes track upward to the highest spire spiraling upward to infinity, just pricking the base of the sun sitting at its peak. Mosaic windows, stories high, twinkle as the faces of Andraste and her followers gaze down from their stony inlays.
“It is Starkhaven’s chantry. Prince Sebastian is quite devoted,” Evangeline says, shouldering past Rhys and taking a step toward the large red doors.
“Didn’t he break-up with God to become the Prince?” Rhys asks mildly, frowning up at the stark white building.
“I don’t believe that’s how it works,” replies Evangeline. “He is a man turned toward the Maker to his core.”
Rhys chuckles to himself, even if Evangeline doesn’t partake in his joking.
“You don’t think that’s who the Inquisitor’s contact is? The Prince?” Rhys’s chuckle becomes a laugh. Evangeline pauses, one hand on the door, and she looks slowly to Rhys, her eyebrows raised. Then his laugh catches in his throat, his stomach sinking. “Maker, I’m right, aren’t I? I’m always right.”

Flashes of images played across Rhys's mind as he tossed and turned in a fitful sleep. Evangeline's lifeless body, his mother's face as she sacrificed herself so that Evangeline could live again. At times in the last few weeks it was like he didn't know if he should be mourning or celebrating, his emotions torn. Finally he sighed and rolled over onto his back, sleep eluded him, he looked up at the sky, it was nearly dusk, but the sky was clear and the stars were out in full abundance. He could hear Evangeline's steady breath near him, it was like a comforting lullaby, all the bad, all the hardships, he still had her, but what did that even ultimately mean. They were no longer with the Circle, his entire life, everything he had ever known, it was all behind him now. There was no turning back. The fire was down to embers, it would be morning soon, he should probably get up and put some more wood on it so they could make something for breakfast. He lay there in silence for a bit longer, watched as the horizon grew lighter and slowly pushed the stars away. He stole one more glance at Evangeline on the other side of the fire, where she'd fallen asleep, she looked so peaceful when she slept. Everything had happened so fast a month earlier, when they had shared that kiss, it hadn't seemed like much, at least on the outside. On the inside though, that single kiss had meant everything, that one simple kiss. Some days all he could think about was what it had meant, did she love him like he loved her, did she even know he was falling madly in love with her, what if she didn't feel the same way, what if the kiss had meant nothing to her....... So many questions, so far quite unanswered. Finally he stretched and quietly got up, he'd go find some more wood to put on the fire, perhaps catch them a nice tasty rabbit for breakfast. He grabbed his staff and slung it over his shoulder and then crept into the woods. He walks a short distance, close enough if he yelled Evangeline would be able to hear him, but far enough away he could no longer see their campfire. It was quiet, eerily quiet, the hair on the back of his neck prickled, something felt off and he didn't like it. He started to move back to where he'd left Evangeline, he didn't want anyone that might be out there to know he was on to them. He made it to her side and shook her awake, keeping a finger to her lips so that she would know the moment her eyes fluttered open that danger was near. It seemed he did so just in time, cries rang out around them as a group of rogue Templars moved in around them. He moved off in a defensive stance while Evangeline sprang to action behind him. At first there were too many to count, but as he and Evangeline fought them, one thing became abundantly clear, they were hunting apostates, and had decided Rhys would make a fine addition to their collection. There had to be at least twelve of them, if not more, in all the chaos and excitement it was hard to say for sure. He stole one last desperate glance at Evangeline, she was holding her own, like the warrior she was, brave and fierce, some of the traits he loved about her. Did he dare hope they could take down such numbers, what if these men had reinforcements that had yet to show their faces, so many questions, so many unknown variables. In a split second decision, one made out of love and desperation to save the woman he loved, he decided to use himself as bait and try and lead them away from Evangeline, who was pinned down fighting what appeared to be three men. He ran, shooting off spells behind him as he did, he wasn't sure how many followed him, he didn't stop to count. Eventually one got close enough to use his Templar powers on Rhys, and he fell to the ground, his magic now useless, waves of pain coursing through his body. His last thoughts before he blacked out, was just pure desperation that his plan had worked, that Evangeline was safe, and then the world faded to black.

Wynne did in fact get killed off in literally the next chapter after this character growth moment, but as a shocking twist, not as a result of cringe "anarchy bad" bullshit, but by sacrificing the spirit's power that was sustaining her undead state in order to bring a dead ally back to life.
Which is still upsetting, however not only is the revived Evangeline the prime example of "the only good Templar is a Templar who abandons their post" but she was also an active participant in the events that made the Mage's revolution for freedom possible and joined their cause, so actually this is probably the most based way for Wynne to have died honestly (at least as far as Dragon Age gets, it's far better than Anders potential fates at least imo)
they fucking centrist-ified my cool undead grandma, what the fuck
#would have greatly preferred her to you know. not have died but oh well.#dragon age#asunder#wynne of freehold#evangeline de brassard
