I’m loving this novel because it’s still not clear who the male lead is. Usually in danmei, the ML is established right away. But in This Player Must be Using Plug-ins! (alt. title: This Character is Suspected of Cheating!), there are multiple men who can possibly be the ML.

I’m gonna have to double check later if this is actually a harem—which is unlikely since I don’t bookmark harem. But even if it were, I don’t think I'll mind coz their relationship with He Yu, the main character, have been built up so naturally.

Anyways, the ML candidates so far:

Wanrenzhan (a title, not actually his name. Literally means Ten Thousand Kills) - first one that MC met. He's been subjected to many of He Yu's schemes that for the entire second arc he keeps yapping about how he'll definitely exact his revenge on him one day. I thought he was just gonna be that stupid, annoying cannon fodder who exists simply for the MC to face-slap, but surprise, surprise, he’s the first among the candidates to have his romantic awakening haha

Zhen Xing - second one who met MC. The most powerful and popular player in this competition. He Yu once stole his equipment while riding on a giant monster fish, and this impressed Zhen Xing so much that he's been bugging him for a fight so he can compare their skills. Possible ML candidate because this is an unlimited flow, and in such genre, the ML is usually the most impressive one. And among the candidates, it was through his POV that He Yu was first described to be both fragile and beautiful. Also rushed to save He Yu and catch him as he fell. Typical ML saving the MC behavior

Eugene - the cyborg guy. Was also impressed by MC during their first meeting (He Yu had driven the giant monster fish to the island then made a dramatic and graceful landing, which was in stark contrast to Eugene’s haggard state). Second in strength to Zhen Xing, and like Zhen Xing, he joined the Dawn Training School copy just to meet He Yu again. Generally friendly towards He Yu, but in the beginning he didn’t care if Wanrenzhan managed to kill him. Now, however, he and Zhen Xing are like He Yu’s most loyal followers.

Ling Buchen - Hasn't met He Yu yet, but he’s currently watching the live broadcast of him. They’re both from Blue Star, so they may cooperate in the future. He Yu has also heard a lot about him because he’s been making a name for himself in this competition.

The Vanderblum family is ling standing wizarding family. Theyve been around for centuries, much like many pureblood families. The difference is, they stopped being regarded as a pureblood lineage. From the founder(term being used loosely) of the Vanderblum family; Wiley Vanderblum, the family was totally pureblooded. However, like the Malfoy family they were strictly against inbreeding. However unlike the Malfoy family they never became regarded as a Sacred 28 family, nor do they have any relation to the Sacred 28 families.

Ira Vanderblum was the defecter of the family who married a Part Veela and subsequently has two Part Veela sons. His father Eugene, the tradtional man that he was, was openly disaproving of their marriage. Ira's mother sided with Eugene and eventually Ira moved him and Maizey to the British Isles, where he family was originally from further inland. Idris, the other of Iras sons looked more like his mother, as hed inherited her red hair and green eyes, whereas Hayward was almost a carbon copy of his father. The only difference being the stark white parts of his hair.

The other side of the family, the Eilanders were a family of mostly Irish wizards. From what is known about them, their line always had traces of Veela blood, as Oisìn Eilander had had two Half Veela sons with an unknown, or multiple, unknown Veela. Both Married halfblooded witches. Penka Eilanders mother, however is half Veela as well, making her 1/4 veela whereas her cousins are all 1/8 veela.

Ira, was not a good father. Despite the mandate by the Ministry against Underage magic use, Ira pushed his sons to learn magic faster to be better than their peers. If they ever made a mistake, he would spell them. Most of the spells they boys sport are from their father. Ira pit his sons against eachothwr for a long time, having then use eachother as test dummies for spells. That was until he died. The offical story was that his age had clouded his mind, and he happened to walk into a dementor on the grounds of their estate. The real story was that Hayward had finally snapped and an unfortunatetly timed spell put his father in the path of a dementor.

Of them, Idris is the oldest followed by Deckard by about two years, and then Hayward and Penka by another five. (When Idris was in his seventh year, Deckard was in his fifth and Hayward and Penka werent even in school). Idris was in fact present for the battle of Hogwarts, he suffered a disabling injury that happened to sever a nerve in Idris's leg as well as shatter the bones, rendering it unusable for years. Now in his 30's he has partial mobility with and without a cane, however that was only after years of physical therapy. Hayward and Penka started school seven years after. (In canon terms they would be third years when MC starts school)

Just before his sixth year of hogwarts, Hayward killed her father. He finally snapped during an argument and pushed his father into the path of a dementor that got into the grounds of their manor. Idris was present for this, but was unable to stop what happened. Hayward, understsble went a bit mad. Hed just killed his father, by proxy, but still. He was seventeen and he was a murderer. Surely he'd be thrown in Azkaban for the rest of the life, hed never finish school, hed never work in the ministry, Hed never amount to anything. But of course, not wanting to lose any more of his family, Idris helped Hayward cover up the accident. To this day they are the only two that know the truth.

Deckard Vanderblum was Dorothy's way if competing with her brother. While they didnt attend the same schools, Deckard and Idris were actually quite close. Despite the rivalry between their parents. Deckard was very quick to become the scapegoat of the family, he absolutely refused to be a tool for his mother and openly despises the way she raised him. He moved out as soon as he graduated from Beuxbatons. Where Idris went on to become an Auror, Deckard practiced less wizarding aligned careers. For a time though, he was in quite a dark place, alone with a mind that was just a little too loud for him. With help, he got himself together and hes doing much better, but its quite evident that Deckard isnt, and frankly never was, all the way there.

Penka Eilander attended Durmstrang. It wouldnt be wrong to say that she seems too soft to handle it, but she holds her own much better than most expect her to. Thats mostly because she, unlike many, knows how to pick her battles. She knows what she can afford to say and do, and when to simply shut up. Shes the oldest in her side of the family, and outside of school often gets saddled with looking after her baby cousins. She doesnt mind too terribly, she understands her aunt needs a break sometimes, but she wishes her cousins werent such nightmares.

Anna Sawai, Izaac Wang and ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Cast Among Unforgettable Gala Honorees (EXCLUSIVE)

Anna Sawai (“Shogun”), Izaac Wang (“Didi”) and the cast of Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” will be honored at the 22nd annual Unforgettable Gala (UNFO).

Produced by GoldenTV and Character Media, the UNFO is the premier Asian American awards gala, honoring the biggest and brightest API talent in entertainment and media. Since 2002, the Unforgettable Gala has grown to become the API community’s longest-running awards ceremony.

“Didi” stars Joan Chen and Wang’s honors for Actor in Film and Breakout in Film, respectively, add more accolades to the indie Sundance award-winning hit’s belt. Meanwhile, Sawai’s win for Actor in TV is yet another victory after her Emmy win for best actress in a drama series.

The “Avatar: The Last Airbender” cast will receive the Vanguard Award at this year’s Unforgettable Gala. Other honorees include Hoa Xuande for his breakout role in “The Sympathizer,” Sean Wang for directing “Didi,” Rachel Kondo for her writing on “Shogun” and “Your Rich BFF” creator Vivian Tu for her work as a digital influencer. 

“Every year, we come together to honor the incredible API talent that continues to push boundaries and break down barriers in Hollywood and beyond,” said GoldenTV CEO Takashi Cheng said in a statement Thursday. “This year’s honorees represent the breadth and depth of API excellence across entertainment, arts and culture.”

The awards are voted and determined by a selection committee co-chaired by Adele Lim and Eugene Lee Yang and including Awkwafina, Bing Chen, Destin Daniel Cretton, Daniel Dae Kim, Lisa Ling, Simu Liu, Randall Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Janet Yang and more. Actor Anna Cathcart, CAPE executive director Michelle Sugihara and actor Daniel Wu are among this year’s award presenters.

The gala is set to take place Dec. 14 with a broadcast of the ceremony airing Dec. 18 on ChimeTV and streaming at GetGolden.TV.

hey v and emily! thank you for doing this podcast! i really enjoy getting to listen and learn with you. i just finished episode 23 where you mentioned libba bray et al being problematic and my curiosity is piqued. i read all of libba bray's books as they were coming out, so for some of them it's been quite a while. were you referring to book content or irl event(s) or both? i would love to know more if you have the time

V here -- I LOVE Libba's The Diviners series, but it also has a lot of things that could have been handled better if she had put in the research. For example, it's yet another example of the Bury Your Gays trope/the Evil Lesbian trope, and she put significantly less research and work into writing 1920s LES Russian-Jewish culture than she did any other non-WASP culture in the series. Given that it's a series ostensibly ABOUT eugenics in America as a necessary evil of the "American Dream," the fact that she kind of lumped Sam's VERY NOT-WHITE IN THE 1920s experience into being One Of The White Characters drives me nuts. (Also she gets her Yiddish wrong.)

I also don't personally love the AGATB series, because it's just not my flavor of genre fiction, but this blog does a pretty good breakdown of why it doesn't hold up to 2023 standards of responsible representation/inclusion, especially wrt the "heroic" main character being a British colonist in India.

Bray spends two whole paragraphs describing the Indian marketplace. It’s not just for scene setting; she’s using her setting for novelty. The problem is that people are never novel to themselves, nor is their own culture novel to them. So using another culture for novelty means twisting the depiction for the purposes of entertaining outsiders. The result is exoticism.

Are these unforgivable evils? No. And honestly, compared to how A LOT of YA books older than, like, 2017, hold up to 2023 standards, I also personally fully acknowledge that my complaints about The Diviners are more like quibbles than anything with actual weight. It's not like she's Laura Ingalls W*lder. I also do think that there is almost no way to write historical fiction that is both accurate and critical of the structures that upheld the kyriarchy of the past in a way that is still suited to a STORY that is interesting and readable.

But I also think that, particularly with regard to AGATB, Libba was writing outside of her lane -- like... I'm not sure that any white westerner should necessarily be the person trying to tackle a fantasy series in British-occupied India, because our education on that time and place is steeped in Orientalism and even the most woke among us aren't authentic voices of those who suffered massively under that occupation. So IDK. AGATB came out long before We Need Diverse Voices, and you can tell.

With The Diviners, I mostly get frustrated because she clearly put A LOT of attention and care into writing Memphis' Black experience and Ling's Chinese-American experience, but she didn't afford the same research or care to Sam's Jewish experience because she didn't even do enough research to know that his experience WAS racialized (and he would have suffered xenophobia to boot, being a Russian immigrant).

tl;dr, she's not #cancelled -- hell, I write drabbles for The Diviners whenever I get the opportunity! -- but there are some glaring instances of ignorance and privilege in her writing that are a bummer.

I'll always be so devastated by the fact Cheng Xiaoshi is crying while thinking about, not the best times as some dead wives would be remembered (looking at you Lu Guang 👀) but, the times Lu Guang reprimanded him and corrected his behavior.

I think it says important things about their relationship and their respective love language.

Lu Guang is known to have acts of service as a love language. It's not all there is to him though.

While it might be borderline toxic (that's absolutely not how we should raise our children, people), I do get the intent when it's adult to adult, in the middle of positive expression of affection and supportive comments. While I do not see Lu Guang as someone who would give an easy compliment, having him agree with his partner's ideas or following his lead is the most positive feedback Cheng Xiaoshi can get.

And Cheng Xiaoshi would absolutely take this trust as it is. Because, as you all know, Cheng Xiaoshi's love is dependable on the amount of trust he puts into someone. That's why, after all this time, he trusts his parents to come back with an acceptable explanation for their absence. I do believe that Qiao Ling had to work for his trust in a time when everyone looked down on him, pitied him, bullied him for a situation which was out of his control. That's why he gives this monologue about partnership to Lu Guang during their very first meeting. It's only natural that he recognizes the same kind of trust giving as love. Moreover when coming from a control freak.

So when Lu Guang trusts Cheng Xiaoshi with their business, which is Cheng Xiaoshi's baby, he shows that he believes his partner is capable and he knows he will do better than he ever will in this domain. Marketing, too. Lu Guang accepts to be the shop's face and he does modeling for Cheng Xiaoshi even though he is not comfortable with the situation. His self-confidence regarding his looks has nothing to do with it, he just believes that if Cheng Xiaoshi thinks it will work, then he doesn't mind going out of his comfort zone for it.

Lu Guang is also a scorpio, which makes a very demanding person, with himself and others. He expects order, cleanliness and safety from Cheng Xiaoshi in their daily life and he also needs his partner to trust his judgement regarding their side hustle. It's not just that Cheng Xiaoshi should obey the rules, but Lu Guang wants him to understand that they don't exist to be an inconvenience and spoil his fun as a superhero, but to protect him from harm; when and where Lu Guang wouldn't be able to reach him. The rules are his way to protect his best friend as well as the timeline itself.

With that in mind, this scene is very telling of Cheng Xiaoshi's state of mind. Two things:

Lu Guang's reprimands were words of love. Not having this kind of affection in his life hurts Cheng Xiaoshi. Going deeper, Lu Guang took the role of the parent sometimes and the parallel is there whether we want it or not. Also, Cheng Xiaoshi refers to Qiao Ling and him as light bringers. Losing one of them would literally feel like a missing limb.

He feels guilty for Lu Guang's death and he feels like he could have been better, as partner, roommate and friend. I don't believe he ever was not enough in Lu Guang's mind, god *snort* no. Cheng Xiaoshi might still feel like Lu Guang would still be here if he didn't fail him. Because Lu Guang trusted him enough to let him do as he pleased even when it put him in danger (aka Lu Guang's PTSD) but Cheng Xiaoshi couldn't protect him from his own carelessness. He must think he somehow betrayed this trust.

Often, Cheng Xiaoshi has the main character syndrome when he does something reckless and believes that it will all be okay in the end because he's the good guy. You cannot blame him, honesty. It worked so far, right? And Lu Guang trusting him to do dangerous things means that he also trusts him to come back to him safe and sound. Lu Guang's trust is the most precious thing in the world to him, it's almost his lucky charm. You know.

Lu Guang actually dying? It's not even a concrete possibility in Cheng Xiaoshi's mind. He's a good person. Just like Emma was. And Cheng Xiaoshi can be awfully fragile when it comes to this: a good person dying always brings him to his knees. This unfairness is tough on this so-called naivety that Lu Guang loves about him. The reality of it can only hurt his conviction that his parents are alive and will come back for him too.

Anyway.

I don't know, this scene just really hurts me because of what it means, with all possible layers of his character.
