Alright it's 1am but I don't care I got nothing to do. Right so.
In my rdr2 addled mind I've been exploring some westerns and I recently watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid upon my fathers recommendation. And oh boy.
genuinely surprised this film doesn't have much of a fandom considering how it's perfect fandom material. It's got the caring, slow moments but still light hearted teasing and banter that the actors do so well.
Moments like the classic bike scene with Butch and Etta (which btw I love their relationship it's so cute and remains platonic which I love) and raindrops keep falling on my head playing is sooo fun. Also moments that made me genuinely laugh out loud like them running away from the trackers with no clue who they were idk just the "who are those guys????" was funny to me.
And omg Butch, Sundance and Etta in Bolivia is just so funny. The first time they get there and sundance starts acting like a grumpy teenager and butch's little remark to Etta like a parent, saying, "he'll feel better after he's robbed a couple banks" was great.
The whole montage of Etta trying to teach butch and sundance the necessary phrases to rob a bank in Spanish was again so funny this film is so damn funny. But butch acting like a star pupil whilst Sundance just gets frustrated is great - then it turns out he was just cheating the whole time lmao - then when it comes to their actual first bank robbery and butch has to pull out one of his little cards and sundance is just like oh ffs and its like- agh they have such a funny dynamic.
Anyway I really enjoyed the film and needed to ramble otherwise my brains were gonna melt :)
#i dont think anyone cares about the film anymore but I DONT CARE#now gonna do a deep dive into butch cassidy and the sundance kid and the wild bunch >:)#cowboys#:)#butch cassidy and the sundance kid#etta place#my beloved#she was amazing tho#star of the show#i should probably sleep

How curious that in this scene, towards the end of 'Groundhog Day' (1993), a portrait of Harry âSundance Kidâ Longabaugh with his wife Etta Place (from January 1901) appears in the background. Did the film's art director know about it? An 'easter egg' perhaps?

I love Wonder Woman very much and I love her potential to explore themes of truthâs different meanings and violence against women and what it means for trauma to be passed on or processed in different circumstances but unfortunately all this potential is snubbed by her support of the military vis a vis her solider boyfriend and her origins as a character designed to encourage women to join the war effort. I think if you wanted to give her story real impact and meaning this would have to be completely removed and as such I long for a universe where Etta and the Holliday Girls are an internationally touring band and Steve is their loser friend who manages the finance and Diana follows them all around as the friend who canât hold an apartment
#dc#my new story Wonder Woman goes couch surfing#which iirc already happened in the 80s but still#the internationally touring aspect would still give her stories a reason to be global instead of connected to a particular city#and would place Etta more centrally in the story I feel like a lot of WW comics arenât sure what to do with her#and I think it would be fun and whimsical.. imagine Diana sneaking around to prevent#some sort of sinister sabotage at a music festival while Etta is performing onstage and trying to give her clues as to#where to go next and what to do.. classic funny#I have many ideas for this sort of WW rewrite but a lot of them are so divorced from the source material via#the ground up wiping of Steveâs backstory and character so I get nervous about sharing them LOL#Wonder Woman

So I went to the wiki page for the henghill Bullet & Brain mission of 2.2 looking for some dialogue I had missed and
a) I found something incredibly tasty that slotted into some other thoughts I'd been having, more on that on another day, and
b) I saw this super fun little trivia at the bottom, which!
I knew Penacony characters like Boothill took a lot of inspirations from old movies, but I didn't realize it was even in his and Dan Heng's relationship, that's so cool!!
It fits them very well, it's such a fun reference. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was an old buddy Western film (from 1969- nice) about a pair of outlaws. Butch Cassidy was the leader of a gang, and described as clever, affable, and talkative. Meanwhile, his closest companion, the Sundance Kid, was known as a man of few words.
Cassidy's original birth name was much more plain, but similar to Boothill, he took on a new moniker when he became an outlaw. "Cassidy" had been the last name of his beloved mentor, who taught him how to shoot and ride. And Sundance Kid was known as he was because Sundance was the name of his hometown, and it was the only place that had ever managed to catch and jail him, back when he'd been younger (also similar to Dan Heng, but ouch).
These two stick together like glue throughout the length of the film- through Cassidy's leadership of the gang being challenged, through a train robbery gone wrong, through being pursued by mercenaries, and even through fleeing to Bolivia and trying to start over together.
I don't want to say too much more, since the mission title is referencing one specific movie that I've never seen. I kinda wanna watch it now, though, just to see the inspiration that went into Boothill and Dan Heng and how they get along. I just think it's really sweet that these two were literally made to be the best of bros, how lovely is that. đ
#honkai star rail#this can be ship or plantonic tbh yall are always free to tag my ramblings as you please haha#just! they're so sweet!!#FWENDS#i would love to see more of them being a dynamic duo further down the line âĄ#i think the film moved things along a little quicker but the real life Cassidy and Sundance were actually in south america for a few years#they fled there to get away from pursuers along with Sundance's girlfriend Etta Place.#supposedly they managed to buy a small ranch and the three of them lived peacefully (and even lawfully!) together for like three years-#-until the law caught up with them again#at some point Etta Place returned to the US reportedly due to illness rather than not wanting to get caught like in the film#Sundance may or may not have escorted her back. but whether he did or not he returned to South America with Cassidy#the two of them eventually got into a huge firefight with authorities where Sundance was fatally shot and Cassidy chose to end his own life#that's the most common story anyway. some also say Cassidy snuck back into the US again where he lived quietly until his death.#but it reads kind of like rumors of Elvis Presley sightings to me BSMZKNSKS#the film ended much more happily with the two of them getting into shenanigans and a freeze frame of them in a hail of bullets haha#i wanna see Dan Heng and Boothill fight together too it would be so cool aaaaaa#they would be great at getting into shenanigans! as we've already seen!!#fun bonus info: Boothill's ult literally puts black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to look like a widescreen Western movie#fun bonus info 2: Cassidy was regarded with respect by some people bc he never stole from the poor he only robbed big companies#this is actually nicer than Boothill is in canon bc he openly admits he will rob someone blind if he doesn't like them BSKZKKZMSKDK#(although I feel like its implied he has more standards for this than he gives himself credit for.#like he makes it pretty clear he doesn't particularly like Argenti at first and thinks he's annoying as shit but I'm sure he didn't rob him#...would have been real fucking funny if he did though oh my god I would love to see him try that. it absolutely would not work BSKZKNSKSJS#hsr#henghill#bootheng#dan heng#boothill#hsr boothill#hsr dan heng

I'm doing at least 4 major personal quests right now (getting married/planning a wedding across 4 states, AND self publishing my debut novel, helping fiancé find/change into new job, moving houses) and have several friend/family side quests which regularly also demand my attention, it's really so inconvenient I also have to clock into my day job at the same time lol
I think society would be much better if it was considered more normal and acceptable to go on quests sometimes. At least once in your life, and it doesn't even have to be personal to you. Like you could call your boss like "hey my friend is going on a quest to find out once and for all what's the truth about her grandmother's childhood family. Ain't got nothing to do with me, but this is probably going to be a big one and she's going to need a friend with her."
And they'd just be like "alright, sure. See you in a year, and let us know if it's going to be longer, so we can start training a more permanent hire until you get back."
#etta rambles#DON'T get me wrong I enjoy my job and my coworkers and boss are all great#i have such a good work life balance and its a great place to be#they treat me so well here I'm very happy with where im at#but there is SO MUCH going on#I'm a very tired knight

at last, my love has come along
Fandom: Gladiator II Pairing: General Acacius x Wife!Reader Rating: PG13 Word count: 2.9k words Summary: After the end of a loveless marriage, your father finds a match for you in General Acacius. Warnings: age gap, arranged marriage, mentions of maternal and infant mortality, widowed reader, widowed Acacius, past neglect, virgin!reader. A/N: Marcus Acacius has me in a chokehold and he knows I like it. This is a second look at the characters from home in three days, do not wash but happens earlier. You can read them in whatever order you wish. Title stolen from Etta James' At Last.
âWhat is he like? The Dominus?âÂ
âHe is very kind,â said one of the girls who worked on your toga. You nodded, the pearls in your earrings brushing against your skin and making the hairs on your body stand upright.Â
âWhat of my hair?âÂ
âWhat of it, Domina?âÂ
âThe sun has already set. You said the Dominus will be home soon,â you said, fidgeting with the silk fabric that your sisters had presented you with before you began your travel from your village to the city. Something that would help you fit in better with the fashionable ladies and not make your husband, the General, look bad in societyâs eyes.Â
It was not for lack of wealth that you did not own many luxurious fabrics. Only that such things did not reach your village easily and your father, despite his place in the Senate, never brought the right things home. Not for a lack of love for you and your siblings but a lack of taste in womenâs clothing and jewelry.Â
You thought as a young girl of only fourteen that your husband, the first one, would bring you the soft silks and lustrous gold unlike your father. But he did not even bring himself home. You had been married off through letters exchanged between him and your father. It took two of living in his mansion and raising his two children from his last marriage before he finally came home. And when he did, he did not act as a husband should. Not how your older sisters told you he ought to be.Â
When Consus passed, you mourned not as a wife but as a friend.Â
âThe dominus prefers unbraided hair,â the girl standing behind you said. You nodded, registering the information in your heart. You wanted to know all that there was to know about him before he even arrived. Perhaps then you would be pleasing enough to have a fate different from your last marriage.Â
It had been all but a year since you were widowed that your father brought you news that you would be wed to a General who lived in the capital. There was no wedding for you even this once. A repeat of your last fate. You had resigned to never knowing your husband when you reached his grand home and spent your night with servants rather than his bed.Â
How foolish you were to hope.Â
But the situation changed for the better quite suddenly when you received word that General Acacius was returning from his travel soon. You expected that the news would calm your nerves but it somehow achieved the opposite. Fear.Â
When the girls were happy with how they had decorated you for your husbandâs eyes, they led you to his chambers. They left you there alone to stew in your anxieties about how the night would fare. The quiet of the night did not help matters. All that filled the space was the tides of the sea and the occasional clinking of your bangles as you fidgeted with your dress.Â
It was all you yearned for in your last marriage, a night of intimacy as a husband and wife should. But now that you were at the precipice of getting what you wanted, dread filled your chest. Youâd heard from your older sisters and servants what it was like to lay with a man. From their stories, it did not seem enjoyable. Not for women. It was only something to bear for the sake of having children. And all you wanted was to have children.Â
You loved Consusâ children of course. They were all you had in the lonely life you led with him. But they were taken from you soon, married off or sent to battle in many campaigns. And you wanted your own children. Have what your brothers and sisters had. Hold your newborns in your arms and raise them from their first breaths rather than from the middle of their childhood.Â
In your fantasizing of motherhood, you had completely forgotten that you had to be bed by your husband to become a mother. You had forgotten your sisters describe how painful it would be the first time a man took you. If oneâs husband was a barbarian with a big cock, it would hurt each time although not as much as the first. A servant girl told you that she had the luxury of a kind husband who would not touch her if she said she was feeling unwell. But there were also husbands who would beat their women for refusing to perform their marital duties when asked.Â
Your thoughts grew louder and louder in your head until you couldnât hear the ocean anymore. And you most certainly did not hear when the doors opened and your husband entered. When you perceived his presence, he was already sat by you. When he spoke your name, your heart nearly jolted out of your chest.Â
He laughed softly and looked you over with a smile on his plush lips. The candle lights illuminated his golden skin and the strands of gray that interspersed his dark hair. The candle on his other side shone bright to highlight his silhouette, his aquiline nose standing bold, characteristic of a valorous man. The sight had you transfixed and you wondered if his godlike visage aided him in battle. If it distracted his enemies long enough for him to slay them.Â
He reached his hand out to yours, brought it up from your lap and placed a kiss on your fingers. He looked up at you from your fingers, his brown eyes drawing you in like Cupido himself was pulling your strings like a marionette.Â
âI have kept you waiting for long.âÂ
Not as long as Consus did. But you kept the comment to yourself. Youâd never come close to a marital bed but something told you that men did not want to hear about a womanâs previous husband.Â
You spoke for the first time in his presence. âYou are an important man. I understand.âÂ
He smiled, dropping your hand to the space between you but not leaving it. His hand was rough from battle yet gentle in touch. It enveloped yours, exuding a soft dominance like the rest of him did. He was quite large and you winced internally, hoping that it did not translate to his size elsewhere. Did your sisters ever tell you about the relationship between the size of his man and his manhood? You couldnât quite remember.Â
âHave the servants made the home comfortable for you? It has been quite a while since this home had a domina.âÂ
You nodded and licked your lips, wishing you could run out to fetch some water for your drying mouth. âIt is comfortable. And very beautiful. I have never seen the ocean before.âÂ
âThere is nothing like the peace the sound of the waves brings. Nothing like the cool breeze at night and relaxing on the balcony to indulge in the stunning blue expanse.âÂ
âThe sight of the ocean when the sun sets is truly incomparable. I spent many evenings mesmerized by it.âÂ
Like magic, the pressure in your lower belly disappeared. You spoke about the beauty of Rome and indulging in it. He put you at ease, drawing smiles out of you, each one wider than the last. But you had a way of finding something to torture yourself over. As you exchanged details about your past, you blurted the question out.Â
âAm I to your liking?âÂ
âYou are beautiful. Worthy of the praises your father sings of his younger daughter in the senate. And at banquets. The bathhouses and libraries and markets. Rome does not know your name but she knows you.âÂ
âIâŠâ you swallowed, relieved that he found you beautiful but afraid for everything else to come. You were inexperienced but even you knew that beautiful faces were not enough to be an adequate wife. It was not adequate for Consus and you did not want a repetition of that with the General. âI do not know what you require in a wife. But I will learn. I have kept my hair out of braids. I learned that you prefer it that way. I will learn everything else too.âÂ
Please allow me to learn. Do not discard me for my inadequacies before I have the opportunity to prove myself.Â
âYour father also described you as dutiful. I see he was right.âÂ
âStand up,â he said and took your hand once again, guiding you to stand in front of him. âUndress. Let me see you.âÂ
He leaned towards the headboard of the bed, relaxing with his arm draped over it as he looked at you. You felt your heart thud like a galloping horse on the battlefield. Like a good soldier would, you persisted into your own battle and undid the ties and clasps that kept your clothes in place. He sat back, exuding power with his broad shoulders, wide chests and thick thighs spread apart.Â
Something about the situation made you feel like cattle in the market being evaluated by customers. Did the cows feel the way you did? Did they wonder as they were purchased if they would be slaughtered for meat or kept to be bred and milked? At least they had the peace of mind knowing that the man who bought them was satisfied with his purchase.Â
The General hadnât seen you before he took you for a wife.Â
Silk pooled around your legs and the cold breeze heâd waxed poetic about caressed your skin. The cold and the shame of being bare in front of a man persuaded you to cross your arms over your chest. You kept your eyes on the ground, focusing on his feet and yours being so close together.Â
You jumped when his hand grazed your elbow but refused to look at him for fear of what you would find. Disappointment? Disgust? Anger? You could not fathom which would be the worse outcome.Â
âDo not hide from your husband,â he said, gently prying your arms apart. Arms by your side, you dug your fingernails into your palm to keep from covering yourself again. Consus never laid a hand on youâ never bedded you, never hit you. The General had been sweet so far, but you did not know who he was and what he did when angered.Â
He held your hip and caressed your soft skin with his calloused hand. You inhaled sharply, overwhelmed by the proximity of his hand to your core. You pressed your thighs together, your feminine demureness anxious to keep your most intimate parts hidden from menâs eyes.Â
âTurn around. Slowly,â he said, guiding you by your hips. As soon as you faced away from him, you brought your hands back up to cover your breasts. He did not seem to notice as his hand trailed down to your rear and grabbed your flesh in both hands. You whimpered, feeling somehow more exposed though you had not become more naked.
âBeautifulâŠâ he hummed as he rotated you to face him once again. You dropped your arms to your sides as though you had touched a hot pot, his instruction ringing in your ear.Â
âAnd obedient⊠I could not have chosen better. Now show me what you can do, girl.â It was enough for you to finally look up at him. There were none of the expressions you feared you would see. He looked quite relaxed and you were afraid you would ruin that with your ignorance of what you were to show him.Â
âI will do anything you ask,â you answer meekly, hoping he would tell you exactly what he wanted you to do. Hoping he would instruct you every step of the way.Â
âShow me how you will serve me.âÂ
You swallowed, thinking through every bit of information your sisters and servants had given on pleasing a man. It all came down to obedience, to lying down and taking what your husband gave you. Were you supposed to do something else?Â
âP-please,â you whispered, the world distorted as it spilled from your trembling lips. âShow me what I should do.âÂ
He stood up, startling you and forcing you to take a step back. He placed a hand on your lower back and caressed gently like you did a litter of feral kittens when you were a girl.Â
He placed a finger under your chin and nudged you to look up at him. âNothing you should do, beautiful girl. I only want what you want to do.âÂ
âI have neverâŠâ you trailed, shaking your head in denial. âI am still chaste,â you blurted out. He froze in place, deep brown eyes boring into you.
âYour father said you were a devoted mother.âÂ
âTo Consusâ children. Borne by his first and second wives. After his second wife died in childbirth, heâ I raised the children.âÂ
âYou do not want children of your own?âÂ
âI do!â You exclaimed quickly, afraid this life would be taken from you once again. You kept silent throughout your marriage and you couldnât do that again. Not if it meant your womb staying barren. âI do. Consus, heâ both his wives before me died in childbirth and the childrenâ he did not want them to lose another mother. So he never touched me. I am chaste.âÂ
âYour father did not tell me.âÂ
âI did not tell him. Consus wrote to my family that I lost pregnancies. Had my father known that he wasâ that we did not live as a married man and womanâ he would have had me divorce him. Consus did not want that for the children and I could not tell my family the truth until he passed. Please⊠If my father believed I could not bear children, he would not have arranged for our marriage.âÂ
You naively believed your father would have informed the General of your predicament. Giving oneâs daughter to a man when you believed her barren was no small slight. Your felt as though a stone had lodged itself in your throat. You had just doomed yourself and your father. He could march up to the senate come sunrise. Humiliate your father. Take his sword to his neck. All because you were too foolish to know how to please a man.Â
âWhat of you?â
âWhat of me?â You asked, confused. He took your hands in his and guided you to sit on the bed. He joined beside you.
âWhy did you remain loyal to such a loathsome man? One who besmirched you to your family rather than admit to his deficiencies as a man?âÂ
âI was young and foolish. When I realized that he would never give me children, I⊠he had already lied enough to my family about myââ you stopped and shook your head. There was no need to speak ill of the dead man. No need to remind yourself how your barrenness made you the laughing stock of the village. âI resigned myself to the fate the gods had chosen for me. And I grew to love his children as my own.â
âI want more children. I haâ all my sons are dead, a few daughters too.âÂ
You nodded, your chest clenching from the pained look in his eyes. It was universal. Almost everyone whoâd had children had lost children. But the pain never subsided. Youâd seen it in your sisters, noble women of the highest ranking, in servants and slaves. The first time in a General.
âI want to have children.âÂ
He smiled and nodded before picking up your linen stola from the ground and wrapping it around you. He cupped your cheek, his hand engulfing the entirety of your face. He tilted his head, a soft sigh escaping his lips as his eyes bore into yours.
You leaned closer to him, praying you remembered how to kiss from the few times with a servant girl when you were only thirteen. Anticipation and anxiety had your heart racing together. When he finally touched his lips to yours, he quietened every anxiety, leaving only excitement behind. You placed a hand on his armor, the hardness of the metal underneath the leather contrasting the softness of his lips. Your other hand moved of its own accord, finding the nape of his neck. His soft curls tickled your fingers and he sighed into the kiss.Â
He traced your lips with the tip of his tongue and you opened up, welcoming him. A sense of calm settled in you as you explored each other. In his arms, you found safety for the first time since your arrival. His lips coaxed you to the gates of heaven and you followed as you imagined soldiers followed your General into war. With some fear of the uncharted territory yet brave because they trusted his leadership.
When you pulled away from each other, something felt changed. He no longer felt like a stranger. Something in his eyes, an openness inviting you into his life.Â
The ravages of war and time were evident in his features. A scar on the bridge of his nose perhaps from a time he came too close to his own end. His skin was spotted with marks from the sun. His eyes were soft not from the naĂŻvetĂ© of youth but from seeing the harsh world. His golden skin peeked from under his beard decorated with a few grey flecks. You caressed a patch of skin where his beard did not grow.Â
Not an hour had passed since you met him but in his embrace, glancing into his eyes, you knew life would be peaceful.

Summary: inspired by âdeath gripsâ by Etta Marcus/ After a messy break up with Rafe Cameron your freshman year of college, he canât seem to leave you alone. Whether youâre awake or asleep
Series Masterlist
A/n: hey guys I havenât wrote in so long but I had this idea in my head for so longgg, hope you enjoy cause this is a series!!<3
Part: I
âŠâŠ
It had been four months since you broke up with him, yet he still haunted every aspect of your life through your dreams. You were beyond tired of waking every morning with a pounding heart and a bed drenched in cold sweat from memories plaguing your mind. You always thought the most challenging part of a breakup would be the actual breakup, but it wasn't; no matter how hard you tried, you knew you would never forget the heartache Rafe put you through, and you had come to peace with that, what you weren't prepared for was his looming presence in your life even though he wasn't even physically present, that was the hardest part.
âYou all packed up?â your mom asked, snapping you out of thought as she peeked through the crack of your door, only her eyes showing.
You had been so lost in thought that you had almost forgotten you were supposed to be finished packing up for school by now.
âYeah...â you nodded as you quickly bagged up some remaining things that had sat on your bed.
âWell, almost,â you chuckled as your mom entered your room,folding up clothes to help you finish.
âListen,â she said softly, placing a warm hand on your shoulder. âI know you're really stressed about going back. "
You sighed as she spoke. Part of you felt guilty for the way things went last semester. You always tried not to blame yourself, but you couldn't help but feel like you put yourself in the situation, so it was your fault.
âBut this year is going to be better, okay?â You simply nodded in response as she brought you in for a hug. âFreshman years like a trial run.â she giggled warmly.
You had never been in a serious relationship before Rafe. The two of you had started dating at the beginning of your freshman year.bYou met him in your psych class, which you had been failing horribly. It's not like you were stupid. You could easily understand the material if you tried, but you were lazy and didn't feel like it. You had to guess Rafe was failing too, because when your professor partnered the two of you up for your big midterm, which was 30 percent of your grade, you got 72 percent.
Although getting 72 percent wasn't exactly a grade to be proud of, it was enough to pass, and it seemed like a victory at the time. Rafe had this way of making even the most minor victories feel significant, and it was then that you started to see him in a different light. After the project, you both started spending more time together, studying, hanging out, and gradually, what began as a partnership for class grew into something more.
Your relationship with Rafe had always been complicated, to say the least. He was a junior, part of a frat, and you were just a freshman with like two friends, and everyone knew Rafe. So when you started dating it was cool that everyone started to know you.
Rafe was the worst, something you only fully recognized in hindsight. At first, his attentiveness felt like care, and it was easy for you to fall into his traps because you had never been with anyone else. but it quickly morphed into control. He picked who you could hang out with, what you could wear, and even how you spent your free time. You knew you didnât like that but it was your norm.
Arguments between the two of you were frequent and intense, His yelling at you to âget away from himâ turned into full-fledged pushes across the room. What started as him grabbing your wrist a little roughly turned into him using that exact grip to drag you across the cold floor as you kicked your feet, trying to get away. It was a classic case of an abusive relationship. Ignoring the red flags till they hit you in the face. Literally. The breaking point was when you caught him cheating on you mid-fuck.
It was devastating, not just because of the betrayal, but because it forced you to confront the reality of your relationship with Rafe. The breakup that followed was messy and painful, with Rafe oscillating between begging for forgiveness and blaming you for his actions. Not only were you heartbroken, but the stress of your relationship caused you to fail most of your classes, forcing you to have to retake them the whole summer.
So yeah, you were stressed to go back to school, not even stressed; you were terrified; after you and Rafe broke up at the end of last semester, you didn't leave your dorm for anything other than class, so you really didn't have to see him or interact with him. This year, you couldn't do that; the self-isolation would only worsen things and make you more depressed; you wanted to have experiences, go to parties, and hang out with your friends. The only thing was Rafe was a horrible boyfriend, so he had to be an even worse ex. Even though you wished and hoped that the two of you could just ignore each other and stay cordial, you knew Rafe better than that.
-----------
You sat in your dorm, headphones on, blasting music as you focused on finishing your English paper. Looking up, you glanced at your roommate Mia, waving you down and clearly trying her best to get your attention. Slightly giggling at her efforts, you paused your music, sliding the headphones off your ears.
âOh my god, finally!â she mocked, sighing before sitting on the foot of her bed with a playful smirk.
âI've been trying to get your attention for 20 minutes!â the curly-haired girl exaggerated as she threw her head back.
âOh, please! I haven't even been working on this for 20 minutes!â you bantered back, throwing your pillows at her.
âYeah, right, like I believe that. Everybody knows that all you do is work all day.â Mia giggles playfully, throwing the pillow back at you.
She wasn't wrong. You had told yourself that this semester would be different; you would go out, make friends, and party, yet you were still glued to your dorm a month into it. You tried to push yourself; you really did, but the constant dreams about Rafe didn't help you feel better about potentially running into him.
âThat's not true..â you awkwardly laugh as you nervously scratch your neck.
âYes, it is,â the brunette slowly says, looking around as if missing something.
âNo, it's-â you try to get out before being cut off.
âThen prove it.â Mia cuts you off, standing off her bed to walk over to you. âZetaâs throwing tonight, and I don't wanna go alone.â
When Mia mentioned Zeta,Aka Rafes frat, your heart sank, but you tried to stay calm. The last thing you wanted was to end up at a party where he would almost certainly be, but Mia had no idea how bad things had gotten between you. She knew you and Rafe ended on bad terms, but she didnât know the full extent of what youâd been through.
"Zeta?" you repeated, trying to mask your anxiety. "Why do you want to go there?"
Mia gave you a knowing smile, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Because Topper's been trying to get with me for weeks now, and he invited me tonight.â
Your stomach churned at the mention of Topper. He and Rafe were close, practically best friends, which meant Rafe would definitely be at the party. The idea of seeing him again, especially in a place that held so many bad memories, made you feel sick. But Mia had no idea how deep your anxiety ran, and to her, this was just about a fun night out and a cute guy.
"Mia, you know Rafeâs going to be there," you said carefully. "I just⊠I donât know if Iâm ready for that."
Miaâs face softened, and she shifted, leaning forward. "I know things didnât end well, but you canât let him keep you from living your life, right? You deserve to have fun, meet new people, and not let some jerk control how you feel."
You bit your lip, staring at the floor. She was right, in a way. You couldnât hide forever. But the thought of being in the same room as Rafe, of possibly having to interact with him, made your chest tighten with fear. Mia had no idea just how bad things had been between the two of you. To her, Rafe was just a messy breakup, not a nightmare that still haunted your every step.
"I know, itâs justâŠ" you trailed off, unsure of how to explain the weight of it all without giving too much away.
"Look, if it gets weird or if you feel uncomfortable, weâll leave. I promise. But maybe this is your chance to show him that youâve moved on, that he doesnât have power over you anymore."
Her words hit you, and for a moment, you considered it. Maybe going to the party was a chance to reclaim something, to face Rafe without fear, and show himâand yourselfâthat he no longer had a hold on you. But a part of you still hesitated, the fear gnawing at your resolve.
"Okay," you said after a long pause, your voice barely above a whisper. "Iâll go. But if things get too much, we leave, no questions asked."
Miaâs face lit up, and she pulled you into a hug. "Yes! Donât worry, weâll have fun. Weâll stick together, and itâll be fine. I promise.â
You forced a smile, trying to ignore the knot in your stomach as Mia rushed over to her closet to pick out outfits. You hoped she was right, that tonight could be a fresh start, but deep down, you couldnât shake the feeling that being so close to Rafe again would stir up things you werenât ready to confront.
--------------
The bass from the music thudded through the ground as you and Mia walked up to the Zeta house. Even from outside, you could hear the chaotic hum of voices and laughter mixed with the pounding beat of whatever random early 2000s white boy song was blasting through the speakers. Your nerves tightened with every step, and you had to remind yourself to breathe.
Mia seemed unfazed, practically glowing with excitement. She gave you a quick, encouraging smile as she adjusted her skirt. âOkay, weâre just going to have fun, remember? Topperâs probably already inside, and we donât have to stay long if it gets too crazy.â
You nodded, though your heart was racing faster than youâd like to admit.
The front door was wide open, people streaming in and out like they were at some exclusive club. Mia grabbed your hand, pulling you inside with a grin.
The moment you stepped through the door, the atmosphere swallowed you. The smell of beer and sweat mixed with the sharp scent of alcohol. The dim blue lights illuminated the crowd of bodies packed together. It was overwhelming, and for a second, you considered turning around and leaving before anyone noticed you were there.
You thought you pregamed good, but apparently not good enough. The minute you looked around, you felt too sober to be there. Mia was already scanning the room, probably looking for Topper, as you tried your hardest not to scan the room and end up making any unnecessary eye contact with you-know-who.
âOh, he's right there,â Mia yells over the loud music, reaching for your hand.
You tried your best to down the alcohol from the water bottle you and Mia had brought, the bitter taste burning your throat as she pulled you toward Topper. You knew the only way you'd make it through the night was if you drunk enough. Topper knew you, and you knew himâand you were almost sure heâd mention your presence to Rafe if he hadnât already. This whole situation felt like a setup, a trap youâd willingly walked into.
When you finally reached Topper, you stood awkwardly behind Mia as she and Topper made small talk. You tried your hardest not to look at him; even though he wasn't Rafe, he was still a huge reminder of him, but every time you found yourself accidentally looking at him, he was already looking at you. You found it very strange, even looking at Mia a few times to see if she noticed. It sent a shiver down your spine; you already felt anxious about being here, but how he looked at you made it seem like he knew something you didn't.
Not long after Mia had been chatting with Topper, she turned toward you drunkenly with a big, mischievous smirk.
"Hey," she slurred slightly, leaning in close to you as if sharing a secret. âTopper wants to show me his room upstairs. You cool waiting for me here?" Her voice was filled with a mix of giddiness and anticipation.
Your stomach dropped a little, but you forced a smile, trying not to let your anxiety show. The last thing you wanted was to be left alone in a place like this, especially with the looming threat of Rafe showing up at any moment. But Mia was your friend, and she deserved to have fun.
âYeah, sure,â you said, your voice sounding steadier than you felt. âIâll just hang out on the couch or something.â
Miaâs grin widened, and she gave you a quick, sloppy hug. âYouâre the best! I wonât be long, I swear.â
Before you could respond, she grabbed Topperâs hand and dragged him toward the stairs. You watched them disappear into the crowd, your pulse quickening as you realized you were alone in a house full of people you didnât want to see.
You looked around, searching for a spot to sit. The couch in the corner seemed the safest option, so you headed that way, trying to ignore the unease creeping up your spine. Sitting down, you took another swig from your water bottle, hoping the alcohol would kick in soon and numb the nerves threatening to take over.
And it did; about 20 minutes later, you felt on top of the world. You had made it off your spot on the couch, made a whole new group of friends for the night, and started dancing like no one was watching, but someone was, and you started to feel it. The party's energy had begun to lift your spirits, and you felt freer than you had in a long time.
But then, in a split second, that sense of freedom evaporated.
It was as if you could sense him before you even saw him. That familiar tension gripped you as your eyes instinctively scanned the room, and there he wasâRafe, leaning casually against the far wall. His eyes were already on you, a predatory gleam in them, and your heart sank. You wanted to leave immediately. You looked down at your phone, immediately texting Mia that the two of you had to go. Your new friends even looked at you, concerned at the change in your demeanor, asking you what was wrong, and in your drunken state, you told them.
âMy fucking ex is here, and he's staring at me!â you stressed to the group of girls over the blaring music.
âGirl, that's amazing! This is your chance to make him jealous!â one of the girls slurs with a glowing smile as she takes your hand. her comment earning nods and smiles of agreement from the rest of the group.
âNo, you don't get it. Heâs like crazy!â you whined as you looked down at your phone, waiting for a response from Mia. âand my roommate hooking up with his best friend.â
Sure, if Rafe was a regular ex, you would see him at a party and maybe be happy for a petty chance of revenge, but he wasn't a regular ex. You didn't even wanna interact with him yet intentionally piss him off, but you obviously couldn't just leave your friend, so you had to just try your best to ignore him, and you tried, but he made it pretty fucking hard.
He wasnât alone. Surrounded by his friends, Rafe looked every bit the confident, cocky guy you had once fallen for, except now, that same confidence felt menacing. The smile tugging at his lips was more of a smirk that sent a chill down your spine.
He knew you had noticed him.
And as soon as he caught your eye, he kicked his act into high gear.
Rafe started laughing louder, nudging the guys around him like he was the life of the party. Every gesture felt exaggerated, every movement too calculated. He wanted to make sure you saw him and felt his presence as much as possible.
You scoffed and rolled your eyes at that. It was sad that he was acting like this. I mean, how immature was he. You didnât want to give him the satisfaction of knowing how much seeing him affected you, so you turned away, trying to refocus on dancing and getting back into the moment. But it was too late. The room felt smaller and more claustrophobic, and no matter how much you tried to immerse yourself in the music again, you could still feel his eyes on you.
And unable to resist, you glanced back.
Rafe had taken it a step further now. One of the girls nearby had found her way beside him, blonde, tall, and obviously intoxicated. She pressed herself against him, laughing as she draped her arms around his neck. Rafe barely acknowledged her, his attention still fixed on you. It was deliberate.
Your stomach churned.
And then, as if to solidify his little performance, Rafe pulled the girl closer, gripping her waist. The girl giggled, clearly enjoying the attention, oblivious that she was being used as a pawn in Rafeâs sick game.
You tried to look away, but the weight of his gaze held you in place.
Then, without breaking eye contact, he leaned in and kissed herâslow, deliberate, and intense. His hands roamed her body as she melted into the kiss, all while Rafe's piercing eyes remained locked on yours.
It felt like a punch to the gut. The room seemed to spin, and you suddenly felt like you couldnât breathe. He was doing it on purpose. Every touch, every movement, every second of that kiss was for you, to hurt you, to remind you of the control he used to have and still has over you.
And it was working.
âY/n, are you okay?â Your heavy eye contact with Rafe was broken as you turned around to face Mia with teary eyes. You didn't say anything, but she clearly saw what was upsetting you from a mile away.
âOh my god, he's fucking disgusting.â she gasped, looking directly at Rafe with disgust painting her face. âLet's go right now.â
On the walk back to your dorm, Mia went on and on about how what he did should confirm the breakup was the right choice and how he just did it to try and make you jealous, and you knew that. You didn't need her to tell you, but that didn't make you feel better. He had caused you enough pain, so much pain, so why was he still going? When would it be enough?
âHow was Topper?â you questioned curiously, honestly hoping selfishly that he did something that would make her never wanna see him again.
âHorrible.â she cringed, mock gagging, waiting for your reaction.
Really?â you chuckled, trying not to beam from ear to ear.
âNo, the dick was average, but he's hot,â she giggled, looking up as she reminisced on the hook-up. âBut why were you so happy?â she full-on laughed, crossing her arms over her chest
--------------
âHave you seen Rafe?â you asked around the party, looking around every corner for signs of your boyfriend.
You were supposed to go back home for the weekend for a doctor's appointment, but your doctor actually canceled the appointment, so you stayed on campus instead. You had tried to call Rafe multiple times to let him know you were still at school, but he hadn't answered. You believed it was because the two of you had gotten into a fight that morning, and Rafe was known to give the silent treatment, so you thought you might as well just find him yourself if he wanted to play that game.
You navigated through the crowds of people, your heart racing as you called out to a few acquaintances, hoping one of them had seen Rafe. He had been so distant lately, and the tension between you from earlier that morning hung like a thick fog.
âHave you seen Rafe?â you asked one of his friends, who shrugged and waved you off, lost in a conversation. You sighed, the knot in your stomach tightening. The last thing you wanted was to spend the night worrying about where he was, especially after you fought.
âMaybe heâs in the back,â another friend suggested, nodding toward a dimly lit hallway. You nodded, grateful for any lead, and made your way in that direction, your pulse quickening with every step.
As you reached the end of the hall, the music faded slightly, replaced by the muffled sound of voices. The door was somewhat cracked. You could hear muffled moaning, grunting, and clapping. You gasped, hand clamping over your mouth hard. You didn't wanna believe it, you couldn't, but there was only one way to know. Hesitating momentarily, you leaned in closer, peeking through the small crack of the door. Your heart sank as you recognized Rafeâs frame as he fucked some blonde bitch from the back, and if seeing what could be his frame didn't confirm it was him, the âfuck Rafe that feels so good.â did.
You felt as if the world around you had come to a standstill. You knew your relationship with Rafe was far from healthy. Anyone could see that, but you never expected him to do it. To betray you in such a hurtful way. Your mind started to race. Had he cheated before? Was it the whole time? Did everyone know but you? How could someone treat you like shit every single day yet be the one to cheat on you? It wasn't fair, and to be honest, you felt embarrassed.
You turned and rushed away from the door, tears welling in your eyes and blurring your vision. You needed to escape this suffocating atmosphere. As you moved back into the main party area, you tried to shake off the weight of what you had just witnessed, but it clung to you like a heavy blanket.
You stumbled into a group of your friends, busy dancing and laughing, oblivious to your turmoil. One of them, noticing your teary face, hugged you. âHey, are you okay? You look like youâve seen a ghost!â
âIâm fine,â you lied, forcing a smile that didnât reach your eyes. But deep down, you were anything but fine. You felt hollow, betrayed by someone you trusted more than anyone else.
As you moved to the crowd's edge, hoping to catch your breath, you couldnât shake the image of Rafe with that girl. How could he do this to you?
You grabbed your phone, fingers trembling as you dialed his number, your heart racing at the thought of confronting him. But it went straight to voicemail.
------
ây/n!â You woke up to Mia shaking you awake, your heart beating out of your chest, and your sheets dripping in sweat. âGod, are you ok?â she chuckled with a worried undertone.
âY-yeah... Yeah, I'm fine.â You yawned, looking at your roommate with a mixture of confusion and anxiety. That was the third time you had that dream since the party. You didn't realize how much seeing Rafe kiss that girl really affected you until you went to sleep the next day.
âWell, it's 9:30; breakfast closes in 30 minutes,â Mia informed you, staring at you, waiting for a response or some form of movement to show your getting up. âThat means let's go.â
Every time you had a nightmare, it made you lose your appetite the following day, reminding you of how you felt during that time. In fact, it made you lose the urge to do anything, and the nightmares did come more often than not. So when you made your way to the dining hall, you only planned to get a small bowl of cereal and maybe some fruit.
You and Mia sat down next to each other, opting to eat there. You had faced your fear of going to the dining hall multiple times, never seeing Rafe there, and everything went smoothly until it didn't.
âOh my god, Toppers here.â Mia gasped, eyes sparkling with excitement as she made eye contact with him and waved.
You looked up, confused as to why he was even at the dining hall when you knew his frat had better food than the campus could ever provide, let alone why he was there ten minutes left before it closed, but it clicked when you saw Rafe right behind him with an empty plate in hand. Part of you felt like they were there to antagonize you, but at the same time, you felt that thought was semi-narcassistic because why would they go through all the effort. But it was Rafe, and this was all a game to him; it was fun to him.
As Topper approached, Rafe lingered just a bit behind, his blue eyes scanning the room with that familiar cocky smirk plastered across his face.
âHey, ladies,â Topper said, his tone light and teasing. He leaned against the table, completely at ease.
âHey, Top.â Mia chirped, seemingly oblivious to the tension hanging in the air.
Rafe finally stepped forward, his casual demeanor masking the intensity beneath.
âMind if I sit?â he asked, shooting you a sideways glance.
You hesitated but finally nodded, wanting to keep the peace for Miaâs sake. âYeah, sure.â
He slid into the seat beside you, and for a moment, the conversation flowed easily. Rafe leaned back, looking relaxed as he chatted with Mia and Topper. You tried to focus on your cereal, but his presence loomed over you, reminding you of everything you wanted to forget.
âSo, whatâs everyone up to later?â Rafe asked, his gaze flickering between you and Mia. âGot any fun plans? Or is it just another boring day in paradise?â
You rolled your eyes slightly, hoping to brush off the comment. âJust studying,â you replied, trying to keep your voice light.
âLike always?â Rafe smirked, leaning closer, his tone teasing but laced with something sharper. âYou know, I thought youâd be over us by now. Seems like you still care way too much.â
The comment hit you like a punch in the gut, and honestly, it was weird to you that he even noticed you'd been glued to your dorm. It just showed you that he was still hung up on you. Your heart raced, anger bubbling to the surface. âWow, really? You think itâs about you?â you snapped, the words slipping out before you could think twice.
Rafe shrugged that infuriating smirk still plastered on his face. âI mean, itâs not like Iâm the one whoâs still depressed about it,â he replied, his tone smooth dripping with amusement at the fact he was getting to you.
âUnbelievable,â you said, standing up abruptly, the chair scraping loudly against the floor before You gathered your breakfastâcereal, fruit, and allâand headed toward the trash. You tossed it all into the bin. âEnjoy your breakfast,â you called over your shoulder, the disbelief mixed with fury driving you forward as you stormed out.

Part two
If it was one thing your parents stuck into your head when you were younger, it was that you, {Y/N} Gaunt, were better than any other witch in your presence.Â
âThe Lost Gauntâ is what they referred to you as. You, and of course, your parents fed into this idea. People were sure they had died out, either from your family's admittedly embarrassing financial status, or from a few choice family members disgracing your blood line with Muggle blood.
It wasn't a secret, your family's blood soaked history and ideals on muggles of any variety. Your father spoke especially lowly of half bloods, saying they were some of the most loathsome and desperate of them all, with parents who tainted their good family names by giving it to scum.Â
Very opinionated, that man.
You were much the same when you were younger. Snappy and spoiled, demanded everything and no one ever fought you on it. Even with your family's position with lack of wealth, when your parents came out of hiding as Voldemort started his horrid flock, your father didn't hesitate to join. There was no lack of support from expected places. Every pureblood with half sense wanted to be in the good graces of the heir of Slytherin, even if she didn't attend the school. Little you was treated like an absolute princess. Even receiving a letter from Durmstrang personally, your father opting for the obvious choice, burning your Hogwarts letter before you even read it.Â
It made you an absolute terror when you got to the foreign school. Suddenly, you weren't as special as you were in London. Your name still carried a lot of marit, but so did several other students. You learned to keep your mouth shut, to keep your cards to your chest, and eventually, you unlearned everything your parents taught you. You met half bloods there, stronger than you had ever known witches and wizards to be, making close friends with several other open minded purebloods and friendly half bloods.Â
Of course, you still had a family name to uphold. You studied and worked your hardest, eventually making it high enough on a social latter that Gaunt no longer mattered, but {Y/N} did.Â
You started your rebellious streak in year 4, when your father asked you if you wanted to return home for the summer. It was the first time he gave you the choice, you refused. Instead, you traveled to Muggle London without his knowing. You went with a few friends, half bloods, they wanted to show you where they grew up. Your father would have your head for this. You thought in amusement as you danced through the market and gawked at all the muggle contraptions. You were sure to them you looked absolutely delirious, but you couldn't care less in the moment.
You wandered down the streets with a few girls who had broken off from the group. When you noticed a record store, your friends waved you off, refusing to join when they knew you'd be in there for hours. A boy who fancied you gifted you a small record player, and since then, you had been collecting muggle records at any opportunity. Thank Merlin your father didn't keep track of your spending.
You walked in with your head held high, you already gave off the impression of someone too good to be there, a force of habit. You walked down the aisle and searched the albums, dismissing people who tried to educate you on what was best, mostly men trying to impress you, you figured. Nothing more charming than being spoken down to. Eventually, you made it to some of the older ones, clearly used and used and used again. A soft yellow album caught your eye from the top shelf. Etta Jones? You thought for a moment. You had never seen it before, but the woman on the cover looked beautiful.Â
You got on your toes and began to balance on a shelf, struggling to reach the damned record. You have a huff, ready to give in, before you hear a chuckle behind you. Whipping your head around you nearly spun around completely. Then, you saw him. A boy, he looked to be your age, tanned skin with soft pink scars littering his form, with one large one across his face. He had shaggy sandy blonde hair, almost brown, and the cockiest smirk on his face.
You huffed at him and put your hands on your hips, tilting your head at him. âNot very polite, you know. Watching a lady struggle without even an offer of help.âÂ
His smirk slowly turned to a dazzling smile. âYou want my help? You've been blowing past people who've offered you help this whole time.â He remarked and you scoffed.
âDon't be coy. They weren't exactly being truly helpful. Also, no one here is as,â You gestured to him with both hands. âVertically gifted as you.âÂ
He laughed at this and you got another flash of his pearly whites. âThat so?â
âI only speak the truth.â
âThat I see.â
âSo will you?â
âWill I what?â
You scoffed with a scandalized look, gesturing to the album. âHelp a damsel in distress?âÂ
He gave a playful hum and put his hands in his jean pockets, leaning forward a bit in his brown jumper that laid over a mustard yellow button up. âI'm not really the princely type, princess.â He teased and you slowly smirked. âI'm more in line with the monster.âÂ
âWell, kind monster, would you do your princess the kindness of grabbing her this single?â You hummed and he laughed. âMy princess?â
âIf you behave.âÂ
He looked you up and down before he walked over and grabbed the record, looking it over and holding it just out of reach as you tried to snatch it away. âWhat if I don't?â
You huffed and gave up on trying to swipe it, crossing your arms and biting your cheek. âThat's not a very gentlemanly thing to do.â
âI'm not a very gentlemanly person.â He gave you a look that had the alarm bells in your head sounding, but you bit your lip and nodded. âFine then. What would you like in return, hm?â
âYour name.â
âMy name?â You huffed and smiled once more. He nodded with a serious look, but a smile tugged at his lips.
â{Y/N}.â You introduced and held your hand out. âYou don't need my last name. You'll never have to call me it.â You remarked and his eyebrows raised in delight. âYeah?â
âYeah.â You mused as he handed you the record.Â
âAnd your name?â
âRemus. Guess I'll skip the last name too. But please, call me Moony.â He remarked and you nodded.Â
âUntil next time, Moony.â
âNext time, {Y/N}.â
The summer was absolute bliss. You spent it doing all the things your father hated about muggles. Running in fields and jumping in stray bodies of water, going to parties and drinking until you were sick. You kissed muggle boys, went to underground concerts, and even took enchanted pictures for yourself to keep.
Though, you didn't see that record store boy for the rest of the summer. Not from lack of trying, however, going to the store twice a week to try and snag a glimpse of him. Eventually you gave up and went back to your friends.
The next summer, you did see him again. This time, it was a month in, you were out late at a party, and were waiting for the bus to take you to the flat you had bought under a fake muggle name. Well, you say you bought, in reality you had been taking portions of money from your father and pureblood families that wanted your favor, from the start of the school year, saving up enough to be the spoiled girl you were.Â
You were standing under a street lamp, leaning against it as you pulled out a packet of cigarettes. You put it to your lips, just as you did, a voice called over to you. âNeed a light?â
You turned to face the boy who seemed to sneak up on you in alarm, before you slowly lit up at the sight of him. He seemed puzzled by your expression before recognition covered his features. âRecord store princess.â
âRecord store monster.â You cheeked and he walked over, leaning down to cover the end of your smoke from the wind, lighting it with a simple flick. You didn't even think about how you didn't hear the usual metallic click of a lighter, instead, a snap. That was how you lit them anyway.Â
âWhere have you been, pretty boy?â You asked after a long drag, and he watched you breathe the smoke out of your lungs, eyes lingering on your lips. This made you curl them to give him a better view. âAround.â
âSomething caught your eye?â
âSomeone.â He muttered and you pulled your bottom lip between your teeth, glancing at the bus station. âI'm heading home, to my flat. Care to make sure your princess gets home safe?âÂ
He chuckled at the bold offer, rubbing the back of his neck and wetting his lips. There was a pause as he thought about it. â... lead the way.â
That summer was somehow even better than the previous. He spent the night with you, that night, then every single other night. He came and never dreamed of leaving, only gone a handful of days for a few hours at a time for his summer job.
There was this amazing peace, waking up, laying in your stomach, hugging your pillows in your plush massive mess of blankets and pillows, with him. Most of the boys you brought back would be gone in the morning, you preferred it that way, but when you woke up to his arm around your bare back and his nose in the nape of your bruised and bite ridden neck, you couldn't dream of another outcome.
He joked, the second he saw the large canopy bed, about you letting monsters into your private quarters. He seemed to not think so highly of himself, but with every part of your skin he discovered, with every touch and sound he drew from you, he seemed to grow more confident in your situationship. It was dangerous, you knew it, this muggle boy had you wrapped around his finger. Judging by the way he looked at you when you would fall into the clouds of euphoria, he met the same fate.
You had never felt so content, going out and partying, coming home before he did, and spending your nights and afternoons together. With the odd exceptions of a few days out of the months, he was glued to you. Your friends teased you, but for once, you couldn't find it in yourself to be embarrassed. When school came, you had never felt so crushed. You spent the day before lingering in each other's presence without a word. The silence was enough.Â
When he brought you to bed, and your skin was pressed to his, his nose to your temple as he whispered sweet words of encouragement and pure infatuation, you were wreathing and gasping in short spouts, you muttered something that drew his rough movements to a stop. You hadn't even realized it, and he noticed how your eyes squished together and you whined with a huff. Fluttering open your eyes, staring up at his knee weakening hazels. He stared at you in silence and you slowly moved to sit up. It clicked to him, you hadn't even realized what you said. You'd never know that those three little words utterly destroyed him. Knowing that tomorrow he would be away from you again. He knew it would be hell.
He huffed and slowly pulled back. He began slowly, taking you in as if he was trying to commit you to memory. Every curve and blemish, every bit of scarred flesh he devoured with an open mouth kiss. You were lost once more to your own ecstasy.Â
He wanted to say it back so horribly.Â
He wanted you to know he loved you too.
~~~
You spent all of your sixth year waiting for summer, but when it came you dreaded it. Your father told you that you were to move back to London and resume your normal life in preparation for finding you a suitor.
He had promised your mother that he would wait until you were at least 20 to start, but her passing this year it seems he changed his mind. So you returned to business as usual, being enrolled in Hogwarts for your last year of schooling, and being undertaken by the Blackâs matriarch, Walaburga, to learn how to be a pureblood witch worth marrying.
Every day she would come to the Gaunt manor, quiz and train you on behaviors and etiquette. You hated those meetings, she was needlessly cruel and fake nice, to the point it was painful for you to watch her try and flatter and build your fathers ego. It made you sick. Soon, but not soon enough, the summer was over and at least you would be at Hogwarts and away from that sour faced woman.
~~
Remus had gone to your flat that summer, he stayed there for a week before he realized you weren't coming home. He hated it. He hated how you didn't tell him where you were, where you were going. There was this silent agreement between the both of you, You never told him where you would be and he never asked, Never exchanged much about your current personal lives, just the past. So if someone was to ask him where you were, he wouldn't have a clue. You promised him you'd see each other next summer, and that was enough.Â
At first his bitterness was winning, he wanted to believe you left without a word because you wanted nothing more than what you were that summer. Deep down, however, he knew. He knew by the way you looked at him in the morning, how you would pull him into the middle of the room in your socks and his shirt, like it was a dress on you, twirling around and slow dancing to that record he got you the first time you met. You always got what you wanted, and Remus knew he was what you wanted. When he left, he set a paper folded up between the door and the wall, a simple but desperate note. He needed you.
So when he got back to Hogwarts, he was a wreck. His friends noticed immediately. When he sat on the train, and looked out the window instead of shoving his nose in a book or teasing the others together.
âMoony, you good man?â James spoke up first after the three shared awkward looks.Â
âYeah dude, you look like a kicked puppy. Or James when Lily isn't looking at him.â Sirius tried to joke, looking through his suitcase before he paused and his eyes widened.
Remus was suddenly filled with dread. âDon't-â
âLet me guess, the cool girl you met last summer didn't show up this time? Told you, muggle girls her age are crazy.â Sirius laughed, not looking up, only to get jabbed harshly in his side with Jamesâ elbow. Sirius hissed and held his side, looking at James with a glare before James flicked his eyes to Remus.
Sirius looked over and saw just how broken up Remus seemed to be about it. He sighed and gave him a pained sympathetic look. Watching as Peter took out a chocolate bar and handed it over to Remus. He muttered a thank you and took it. Sirius sighed and shook his head. âLook, I'm sorry dude. I don't mean it.â
âIt's fine.â Remus answered quickly. âI was surprised she even gave me the time of day. I guess I always have that summer. I'll be over it in time, I'm sure she isn't missing me as much, as I'm moping over her, maybe that will help me get over it.â
He tried to believe that. He really did. His words were coming out low, he tried to sound wise but he truly sounded pathetic. He felt pathetic. She was all he could think about. From the train, to the carriages, to the Great Hall. Lily saw him and gave him a pout, he had written to her over the summer about what had happened. He wanted her perspective about what had happened, where he could have gone wrong, and out of the thirty he sent her she responded in kind to all of them. She walked up to him, straight past James which left the tall boy to theatrics.Â
âSirius did she just-â James gasped and clenched his chest.
âShe did, James, she did.â Sirius walked up behind him with a smirk.
âDoes she love me anymore?â He turned to Sirius and the shorter boy snickered.
âI don't think so, Jamie. I'll always love you, though.â Sirius indulged his theatrics and caught James (totally not with a struggle, totally smooth, Sirius is very strong) and James gasped. âYou will, won't you, pads?â
âAlways, my love.â Sirius declared his affections and James fanned his face like a swooning Victorian debutante. Lily rolled her eyes so hard she swore they would fall from her face.Â
She turned back to Remus who gave her a painful smile. âI left her a note like you suggested.â
âAnything?â
âNothing.â Remus sighed and she nodded carefully.Â
âI'm sure there is more to it, Remus. Don't let it consume you.â Lily tried to reassure him and he sighed again, making James and Sirius catch up as they sat down.Â
âYeah, there are a million girls in the world!â Sirius tried to cheer him up and both Lily and James winced at that.
âNone of them are like her.â Remus sighed and Sirius gave an owl-like look and then gave a breath of shock. â... Damn Remus, that much, huh?â
He groaned and hit his head on the table. âI just want to sleep.â
âWe could always ditch the sorting ceremony.â Lily tried to nudge him, he seemed to smile at her a bit at the offer.Â
âYeah, but then you'll miss a seventh year being sorted.â Peter piped up and the four of them snapped over to look at him.Â
âWhat? Seventh?â She asked as she looked up at the kids in front of the hall, before she bit her tongue. âRight.. that Gaunt girl every Slytherin is losing their mind over?âÂ
Sirius choked on his pumpkin juice before he quickly cleared his throat as James patted his back. âWoah mate!â
âHer! My mom was tutoring her all summer. Regulus told me. That girl, trying to be the perfect bride or some shit? Just another spoiled pureblood.â Sirius huffed and Lily gave a faint nod. âI hate to agree, but apparently she's the worst.â
âOf course, she's the Slytherin heir.â Sirius huffed. âApparently she went to Dumstrung, and you know how awful they are.â
âAh.â Lily mumbled and her eyes landed on you past the crowd, nudging Remus. âThere she is. Oh Merlin, spoiled and pretty? Dangerous combination.â
Remus sighed and looked over as you sat on the chair. His entire body froze. âAhh! {Y/N} Gaunt! Slytherin!âÂ
The hat didn't hesitate. You had a calm blank expression you were tutored on all summer. Looking across the students, almost bored. You stood up and dusted off your robes, before you froze up at the sound of your name being shouted across the hall.
Remus didn't think. He saw you and shot up from his seat. Lily looked at him, startled, looking between the two before her eyes widened at the name. Oh Merlin.Â
Sirius was bewildered, James was stunned, and Peter hid his face away from the crowds of students who turned to look at Remus. He got a variety of different looks from everyone, but there was a running theme. Who do you think you are? Talking to Gaunt.
â{Y/N}.â He called again, firmer. You looked like a deer in headlights. Staring at him in a stunned silence before one of the girls you met on the train tugged at your sleeve. You glanced at her and by the time you looked back, Remus was rushing across the hall to you. No no no no no.
âFuck.â You hissed and snatched your sleeve from her. You watched as he closed in on you. You felt every hair on your neck stand up. âFuck fuck.â You whispered.
You panicked. And you ran. He was stunned and froze on the spot. You ran straight out of the hall. Remus cursed and turned to his friends, then to the professors. Lily tried to stand and bring him back to sit down, but as if he was a wild animal, the movement gave him a rush of adrenaline. What did he do? What did this absolute stupid and love sick fool do?Â
He ran after you. The entire hall was silent, even the professors stunned before his head of house yelled at him to sit down. He ignored them, turning the corner out of the hall and dashing down the hall he saw you run down.
The hall was quiet for a moment or two, before Lily spoke up. âI'll make it up to you, Professors!â She shouted back before she ran after the two.Â
âMe too!â James shouted and followed after her.Â
âI will not!â Sirius laughed and ran after them, Peter looking at the shouting professor before she made eye contact with him. Peter slowly sat up and she gave him a warning glance, before he quickly scrambled after his friends.Â
McGonagall could only sigh as Dumbledore stifled a laugh into his sleeve.
Can be seen as a continuation of this fic but not strictly
Your afternoon had been almost perfect, with Hazel nestled between your open legs just a step lower on the school bleachers. Her head had been thrown back, with her curls running rampant against your skin and tickling your chest. You smoothed her hair down in vain intervals while she played with a loose string on the stitiching of your plaid skirt as she droned on and on about the unlikelihood of being enlisted as a bomb tech by the US Army.
"I don't really know where else I could use my particular set of expertise. What else could I do that won't ultimately lead me down the path of... you know, treason and terrorism?" You nod vaguely as Hazel continues her equal parts aloof and equal parts worrying rants. All while combining your fingers through her hair, "I mean, I just feel like World War III is probably upon us, you know-"
"Ugh, could you guys get a room?" You had been so enamored by Hazel's ranting that you failed to notice PJ at first. Her and Josie made their slow ascent on the bleachers until their shadows blocked your afternoon sun.
"Could you get a girlfriend?" The words had snipped off your tongue with harsh vexation as you instinctively cradled Hazel closer to your chest.
"Jesus-" Hazel had muttered, as she craned her neck up to stare at PJ and a disgruntled Josie, "Why are you trying to hijack my boob time?"
You had to reign in all murderous intentions as PJ grabbed hold of Hazel's forearms and forcibly dragged her up off the bleachers⊠out of your arms.
"You don't get boob time until we all get boob time. And need I remind you that you're going to be late for Fight Club," You heaved a very loud, very obnoxious sigh as you tilted your head backwards, letting the rays bounce off your pink sunglasses, "You guys should seriously get a room." Said PJ, "Stop giving the entire football team a show. Come on, you're setting us back like 69 years-"
Before PJ sunk her claws into Hazel completely, she bent down until her lips pressed against your cheek, and she whispered, "I'll see you back at my place, yeah?"
Your heart deflated at her confirmation that she was indeed leaving you for Fight Club, "Hazel..."
"Shh, shut up. Just say yes,"
But before you could wrack your brain for something coherent to say, PJ had already begun to make her descent off the bleachers, taking your girlfriend along with her.
You did not hate PJ, nor were you her biggest fan at the best of times. However, nights like tonight made your vexation grow to unimaginable heights simply because PJ is completely and utterly inescapable.
This evening, however, waiting for Hazel to get back from Figh Club, had been perfect. Etta James had been oozing through The Callahan's home speakers as you prepared the butternut soup- Hazel's favourite Post Fight Club recovery meal (although she hated admitting it, because she did not want to put you out of your way).
You are perfectly content, trapped in your web of make-believe as you prance around Hazel's kitchen, assembling your respective bowls needed for the soup. Mrs Callahan had let you in, as she always did after school, with a dismissive wave while she babbled into the receiver of her iPhone. Before she completely disappeared into the innards of her sprawling house, Mrs Callahan vaguely threw over her shoulder "Hazel is at her thing until 5 but I'm sure you've been made aware," and you were left in this great big labyrinth to entertain yourself.
Sex had been even more seldom, given that Hazel was rarely ever in any shape to commence any form of coitus due to the various bruises popping up in unlikely places. You wish you can safely tell yourself you despised seeing her bloody and battered state - that you gain absolutely nothing from Fight Club and that you most likely never will.
But you're staring dreamily into the pot of soup, and you're stirring and stirring, with your heart racing in anticipation of Hazel's inevitable return with her inevitable bruises smeared across her perfect little face.
You had not planned on cooking for anyone because seducing Hazel in her inevitably bloodied state was on the forefront of your mind, and Mrs Callahan had a very tempting bright pink apron hanging on the hook.
So perhaps you did do this all for her.
Perhaps you were waiting for her, to stride on through the foyer, nursing a streak of dried blood down her nose, eager to catch her reaction at seeing you so comfortable in her space while you rushed to swoop in and fawn over her.
This near perfect daydream might have actually manifestedâŠ
Were it not for PJ's loud and obnoxious voice bleeding into the kitchen from the foyer, accompanied by the heavy groan of the front door slamming shut. Your shoulders visibly sag as you empty the rest of the soup into your bowl just as the trio rounds the corner into the kitchen.
"Oh my God - soup!" PJ exclaimed rushing towards you with her gaze zeroed in on the bowl locked firmly in your hand. You had been so focused on keeping the bowl from PJ's incessant grabby hands that you failed to see the dazed, almost breathless look that sprinkled over Hazel's face who drifted slowly behind Josie despite this being her house.
Suddenly, every thought about the impending bruise she was facing due to not dodging a right hook earlier vanished from her mind like doves in the wind. Hazel's head was completely flooded with the image of you, in her kitchen, with your cute as fuck little skirt grazing just above your knee.
This almost did not feel real. Less than a month ago, no one barely blinked in her direction, but now...
So enamored was Hazel by your act of service, she nearly failed to catch PJ's innate need to flirt whenever you were in the vicinity.
"You look hot by the way," PJ had slyly said, still reaching for the bowl of steaming soup, which you only drew higher above your head.
"Sorry PJ, only people who make me cum get to eat my cooking."
"Is that an invitation?" She asked, leaning against the counter, "That sounded like an invitation."
Hazel cleared her throat, finally succeeding in having your eyes wash over her. "Can we probably not talk about you fucking my girlfriend, maybe, I think?" She said cooly, discarding her bag somewhere on the floor before making her up closer towards you. Her slouch was even more prominent and you swear the air in your lungs thinned as she brushed up beside you and muttered, "Hey,"
"Hey yourself." And Hazel's tummy instantly warmed as you discarded the bowl on the counter, turning to cup her cheeks in your hands as you observed her latest shiners acquired from Fight Club. Something sinister flashed through Hazel's mind as your big dark eyes scanned over her visage, eyeing the new bruise splotched across her eye and the horizontal laceration on her cheek.
"It doesn't hurt," She can barely find her words under the overwhelming feeling of your care and attention. Your scent is all encompassing, and before she ever allows for anymore of her arousal to stain her boxers Hazel attempts to draw her face out of your palm.
"Jesus, Hazel!" You squeal, pulling her head down closer to your height, until Hazel has to support herself with a hand on the counter behind you, "Please don't tell me you were sparring with anyone on the football team again!"
You hoped you succeeded in masking how turned on that thought actually got you...
Hazel's voice is deep and low as she replies,
"Jeff said that if I can at least dodge his left, left, right hook next time, I could probably be ready for the whole team." You breathe out and airy laugh almost the same time as her, the both of you silently aware of what the other was doing.
"Ugh, you're such a virgin." PJ mutters under a mouthful of soup.
"I literally have a girlfriend," Hazel mutters without looking away. Her gaze was nearly trapped in yours as she allowed you to pull her limp body away from PJ and Josie. "Come on, I need to clean you up."
And that's how you had found yourself, cross-legged on Hazel's bed with her leaning against the headboard like your Oh so compliant little patient. Her gaze is yet to waver from yours, in fact, cleaning the laceration had been utter hell, right up until this point because Hazel had taken to drawing various circles against the skin of your exposed thigh.
The skirt had ridden up marginally from your seating position, and Hazel seems perfectly fine toying with your various emotions.
"You look really pretty," Hazel breathed out as if those words were sitting heavily on her heart ever since you applied the wet gauze against her left cheek. You try to hold your composure, keeping a firm eye on the dressing of Hazel's wound as you say, "I don't really think I want you going to fight club anymore,"
"Tch'yeah okay," she snickers dismissively, "Hey, is this skirt new? It's hot- like 'gay 50s housewife' kinda hot," There's an edge to her voice that has Hazel sitting taller against the headboard before incriminatingly letting her hands drift just a little higher on your thigh. Your breathing becomes heavier as you fight hard to maintain your crumbling composure.
"I'm serious, Hazel," you had begun to whisper. Why had you begun to whisper?
"I don't wanna have to stitch you up every time-"
As soon as the gauze was plastered onto her cheek, Hazel's head was already melting into your chest, nuzzling at your open cleavage exposed by your Pastel v-neck as she says, "God, I love it when you mommy me,"
"H-Hazel," any warning you tried to inject into your tone gets fizzled out by the embarrassing moan that escaped your lips as Hazel's teeth dragged lightly against the skin of your chest. Her hands were restless, as if she was testing herself as to how far she'd allow herself to go so quickly.
You suck in so much air as Hazel's palm cradles the inside of your thigh and because you're cross legged, closing your legs is nearly impossible. "Fuck, I'm so turned on, right now," her voice cracks as she brings her face up from your boobs. Pressing a hand to your cheek, she tries and fails to bring your lips towards hers.
Hazel frowns as you say,
"You think it makes me feel good seeing you like this?"
You ignore the budding voice in your head echoing the loud and very obnoxious 'yes, yes you do like seeing her like this. You like seeing that reckless smile blossom onto her cracked and battered face. It gets you wet and you know it does-'
But your voice is full of fragile conviction as you say, "You think I like seeing my girlfriend beaten up everyday of the week?"
Hazel blinks once before she succinctly replies, "If I put my hands up your skirt right now, am I gonna find you wet?" An entire desert ecosystem is suddenly born inside your mouth, and you swallow thickly as your eyes evade Hazel's uncomplicated, piercing gaze. She tilts her head, smiles gone, simply waiting for your response.
"Do you want me to tell you what I think?" She asks before steadily closing the distance between you once more. Only, you're so terrified of being caught out, so utterly embarrassed at the thought of her finding out about the pool of wetness that had begun soaking completely through your panties, that you back away the closer she gets. Your slinking backwards only allows Hazel to crawl closer until she's hovering above you in the centre of her bed.
You have her undivided attention, and she has yours. Your eyes recklessly scans her face, every cut, laceration, and every old bruise buried under a new one has your lips turning downward as a small, almost imperceptible whimper forces itself out of your throat.
"There she isâŠ" Hazel whispers with a palm cradling your cheek, "There's my needy little girl," You're quickly slipping into subspace right in front of her and Hazel is more than grateful. A single silver pendant dangles from her throat as she dips down, finally connecting your lips in a quietly passionate kiss. Your eyes immediately flutter shut, and so does hers. The both of you are utterly enamored by the sheer lust communicated by the intensity of the kiss alone.
"Fuck," Hazel curses, momentarily breaking apart to peel off her oversized graphic tee. You're watching your girlfriend in her sports bra with unbridled lust shining heavily on your pouty lips.
"Tell me you're wet for me," She says, "Please, Baby."
You're slipping deeper and deeper but you still have half a mind to lightly whisper, "Hazel, they're right downstairs-" She's already crashing her lips back down onto yours.
"Tell me you're wet for me," She murmurs against your lips, never being able to stray too far.
The hand that isn't holding her up, hovering above you, is once again, underneath your skirts, only this time, the tips of her fingers are dragging up against your inner thigh with no chance of stopping.
"Fuck, Hazel,"
"Is that supposed to be an answer?"
You're already pulling your own hips off the bed, seeking her hand out like a whore as you break the kiss only to whimper, "Yes, okay, fine! I'm so wet for you, Hazel- just, please!"
She watches completely fargone as you let your soaked panties meet her awaiting palm. Watching you grind yourself against her hand has Hazel's mind absolutely descending into lust.
"God, you're so beautiful," she says, before finally pressing her own hand against your soaked panties. She rubs in harsh, rough circles, eager to bring you to the very edge of insanity. She needed to see you fall apart for her again and again-
"Inside," You whisper, watching your girlfriend rub your cunt with bated breath. You're still wearing your skirt but you figure Hazel needs to fuck you in it to fulfil some sort of fantasy and you don't entirely mind. Not at all.
"Hazel, Please. I need you inside-"
"Fuck- you're such a slut-"
Your head immediately falls back against the bed as Hazel's movements against your soaked panties increases.
"You like it when I call you a slut, baby?" Your hips stutter upwards in vague response as you moan loudly into the air.
"Fuck- Hazel, I'm close- I'm so fucking- fuck," the orgasm sneaks up on you like a villain in the night and you're spamming underneath her, while Hazel continues to rub your cunt through the torrid sensation. Before you've ever even come down from your high, there's a knock on the door, and look towards it with slightly parted lips and blurry vision.
"Hey- you have no more soup, and I think you two are fucking in there so Josie and I are just gonna g-"
"Fuck off, PJ!" Hazel screams at the door, failing to hear the small little 'Okay, rude' before she's lifting your skirt until they're pooling at your hips.
"Hazel, what're you-"
"Another one, okay?" She nods encouragingly before shifting your panties aside and pressing the colds tips of her forefinger and middle finger against your soaked cunt. "You're going to give me another one. I wanna see if I can do it."
You can't even roll your eyes at her unnecessary display of pride because your eyes are rolling to the back of your head as she drags the essence of your arousal along your clit. "Fuck, you look so hot-"
"H-Hazel," the aftershocks from your previous orgasm rack through your upper body just as the oncoming tempest of lust gears you up for the next one. Hazel leans over you once more as she continues to rub at your clit, "Just one more, baby, I know you can do it. Show me, baby." It's downright evil, the effect her manipulation has on your body as you descend further and further into your lust.
"Look at how perfect you look," she says with a voice thick with lechery, "Fuck, you get me so wet to, baby," she murmurs before instinctive pressing her lips to yours once again, as if something nestled in her being, craved the touch of your lips against hers.
"You're gonna be a good girl for me?"
"Fuck- Hazel-"
"I'm right here, angel," she whispers, before bringing the tips of her fingers to your opening. Hazel is quick to slide her index and middle finger into your pussy until she's fucking you hard and deep. It takes a few short pumps for you to clutch mindlessly at her forearms with your vision slightly waning as you look up at your smiling girlfriend who watches you descend into your orgasm.
"That's it," she coos as you clench around her fingers, "You're doing so well for me, baby,"
"F-Fuck!" You stutter out as you fall into the depths of euphoria. Your mind is flooded with nothing but Hazel, all thoughts previously plaguing your brain is made null and void. In the end, you're just a beacon for her to release her frustrations out on. Even if it means overstimulating you until you become a noisy, helpless mess.
For a while, each other's heavy breathing is all you hear.
That is, until you hear a loud bump against Hazel's closed door, drawing both your attention.
"PJ-" whispers Josie with unimaginable frustration.
"Oh my God, they're definitely fucking-"
I donât usually do digital art, but this was a âIâm just going to color this sketch, whoops I painted the whole thingâ situation.
This is my paladin Imbi, the bees sheâs made of, her not-so-little-anymore charge Etta, and noble steed Anselm gardening at the house they built in their much deserved epilogue.
Fantasy houses need names, obviously, so this one is named Heimweh, which means âHomesickâ in German. I imagine the bee part of Imbi insisted on well-stocked pantries, impeccably efficient storage, and room enough to fit everyone theyâve ever considered family. The human paladin part of Imbi insisted that it be frugally kept and open to anyone who needs a room, dinner or just a place to be safe for a while.
if you dance, Iâll dance | cillian murphy
2006
âDoesnât this look nice? Look, I found the perfect matching earrings to go with the dress.â
Y/n stood in front of a mirror. It was a few hours before âThe Devil Wear Pradaâ premiere since she was invited by her good friend, Anne. Her assistant, Joli, was helping her get ready.
âI like it.â Y/n smiled to herself. This was her first big premiere, although it wasnât her film, she still wanted to support her friend.
âOkay, oh my god, you look gorgeous!â Joli hasped at the sigh of Y/n.
âI just want this night to go great.â
âY/n! You made it!â Anne yelled over the shouting of the photographers.
âI did, youâre my best friend, of course I was going to show up for you.â Y/n smiled and hugged Anne.
âYou have to come to the after party. Itâs going to be so much fun.â The brunette laughed.
âLet me remind you what happened last time you and I went to an after party. I lost my shoe and you almost got arrested.â
âI promise nothing bad is going to happen at this one.â
Something did happen that night, but it led Y/n to the greatest love of her life. Yeah, she mightâve been a little too drunk and confused her future husband with Henry Cavill, but at least she has an interesting story to tell to her future kid.
It started with a shot of tequila. Then the one shot became two and then three and so on. Not only was tequila consumed, but a waiter had brought a bottle of wine courtesy of the great Meryl Streep who wanted to celebrate the filmâs success.
âWait, shut up, shhhh,â Anne placed her hand over Y/nâs mouth. âOh my god, theyâre playing Poker Face! You have to dance with me!â
âI donât think I can keep myself up. Whereâs the restroom? I might vomit or I need to pee, I canât decide which one.â Y/n admitted.
Anne pointed towards a hallway that had a sign pointing to the restrooms so Y/n mumbled an âIâll be backâ and darted to the hallway. Like any other after party she had attended, the line to the restroom was long. The sight of the line made her frustrated so she left the hallway and walked outside to get some fresh air.
The night sky was shining. Y/n could see some guests already leaving, some women had their heels in their hands, a guy was missing his coat, Y/n even saw Ryan Reynolds being dragged by his manager. That night, she couldnât really remember if she had vomited on âHenry Cavillâ or if she even vomited at all. All she remembered was that some guy had told her she had a pretty smile and gave her his number which she held onto for the rest of the night.
Oh! How could she forget! She had also shared a dance with him to a sweet melody that she forgotten the name of.
âCanât Help Falling In Loveâ by Elvis? No, that wasnât it.
âAt Lastâ by Etta James? Nope.
âUnchained Melodyâ by The Righteous Brothers? Not even close.
She tried so hard to remember the song that she dances to with the guy who made her smile so much. She just wished she could relive that night whenever she wanted.
âCillian, his name is Cillian.â
Growing Pains
summary: who doesnât like a bit of family drama before dinner?
warnings: none really, just a teen getting a telling off
a/n: for those who wanted more mum alessia, this is for you
word count: 838
-
âSit downâ you say, voice steady but firm in the soft glow of the early evening.
The kitchen is eerily silent, save for the occasional clatter of dishes from dinner prep. Leo, your thirteen-year-old, stands before you with a potent blend of resistance and guilt painted across his face. His tousled hair and stubborn stance scream rebellion. Heâs tall for his age, already standing at five foot five. However, he is not as intimidating as he thinks he is.
âIs this about the call from school?â Your wife asks from her spot at the counter, not turning around. Her back radiates calm, though you know sheâs smirking into the sink, probably remembering some equally ridiculous thing she did at his age.
âYes,â you reply, not taking your eyes off Leo. âIt seems our dear son thought it would be amusing to call Mrs. Thompson aâwhat was it, Leo?â
Leo mumbles something unintelligible, staring at the floor as if it holds the secret to escaping this conversation. His toe pushes against the leg of a dining chair, scraping the tile, a small act of defiance.
âLouder,â you instruct, your patience wearing thin.
âA bossy old hag who probably sleeps with a textbook,â he repeats, a little clearer but still sullen and wilted.
Alessiaâs laugh slips out before she can catch it, morphing into a cough when you shoot her a look. This is why youâre always âUn-Fun Mum.â Of course, sheâd find it hilarious. Classic Leo, the class clown with a streak of righteous anger he unfortunately inherited from you.
âLeonardo,â you start, trying to keep your resolve from dissolving completely, âwhat were you thinking?â
He shrugs, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth as if heâs proud of his cleverness and the fact he made his favourite parent laugh. âShe was being unfair,â he says, defensively. âShe keeps picking on Ettaâ
Giulietta, your eleven-year-old daughter, is undoubtedly eavesdropping from her usual spy post at the top of the stairs. Her sweetness contrasts sharply with her brother's budding anarchist tendencies. You can practically see her, a shadow on the landing, ears perked for any mention of her name.
âThat doesn't give you the right to insult her,â you say, feeling your frustration bubble up. âYou need to find better ways to stand up for your sisterâ
âLike what?â he snaps back, eyes flashing. âLetting her get away with it?â His arms cross over his chest, a miniature version of Alessia when she (rarely) geared up for a fight on the pitch.
You open your mouth to respond, but Alessia steps in, sensing your irritation about to boil over. âLeo, what your mother is trying to say is that there are better ways to handle these situations,â she says, her tone like butter melting on toast. âYou could have come to us, or spoken to the headteacherâ
Leo's eyes flick to her, searching for some sign of leniency. The kid knows which parent to work for an angle. âButââ
âNo buts,â you cut in, the finality in your voice slamming the door shut on this discussion. âYou're grounded. No phone, no games, no friendsâ
âThat's not fair!â he protests, his voice a pitch higher, desperation edging in. His face is red, the first sign that heâs about to cry. Or scream.
âLife's not fair,â you retort, standing your ground like a fortress at the centre of battle. âYou'll surviveâ
There's a moment of tense silence, then Leo spins on his heels and storms upstairs, each stomp a protest echoing off the walls. You hear him muttering under his breath, no doubt something unflattering, possibly inventive. The door to his room slams, a punctuation mark on his outrage.
Alessia crosses the room and places a gentle hand on your shoulder. âYou did the right thing,â she says softly, her touch a balm.
You sigh, leaning into her touch. âI know, but it doesn't make it any easierâ
She smiles, brushing a stray strand of hair from your face, a gesture that makes you feel like a teenager again. âParenting never is. But we're in this together, okay?â
You nod, feeling the tension slowly drain from your shoulders like water from a leaky tap. âI know, love.â The smell of the dinner Alessiaâs been preparingâgarlic, tomatoes, something roastedâwafts through the room, grounding you.
From upstairs, the sound of muffled crying seeps through the ceiling. Leoâs rage, morphing into sorrow. Alessiaâs hand slides down your arm, intertwining her fingers with yours.
âWeâll talk to him later,â she whispers. âWhen he's calmed downâ
âYeah,â you agree, squeezing her hand. âWeâll figure it outâ
You both stand there for a moment, listening to the sounds of your home. The hum of the fridge, the distant rush of water from the bathroom where Giulietta is probably hiding out, and the low murmur of Leo's sobs. Parenthood, a constant balance between love and discipline, laughter and tears.
âCome on,â Alessia says finally, giving your hand a gentle tug. âDinner's almost ready. Let's set the tableâ
