Video Games and Diversity: Wylde Flowers Part 1
SPOILER WARNING
Long post!
Wylde Flowers is a captivating game that combines elements of typical farming games (growing crops, tending to animals, collection items, mining, fishing), with elements of magic (crafting spells, brewing potions, a hidden magical village, nightly coven meetings) and even some room for romance, with 7 potential romantic partners.
You play as Tara Wylde, a woman in her late 20's who, following her losing her job and fiancé, moves from the big city to the island town of Fairhaven, to help her ill grandmother, Hazel, to run her farm. Soon, Tara finds out her grandmother, several of the town's residents and she, herself, are witches. She has to get used to running the farm, being a witch and after the passing of her grandma, she must help fight dark forces, solve mysteries and try finding a way to bring the townsfolk and the coven closer.
The game features a wide range of characters, and the casual representation of various ethnicities, religions and the inclusion of characters who are members of the LGBTQ+ community feels very refreshing, without ever feeling forced or overdone. There's a pride flag above town hall, the player gets to choose Tara's orientation and even the gender of her ex-fiancé, and her potential romantic partners include male, female and even a non-binary character. So, let's meet the characters!
Amira Syed is the Iranian town doctor and a member of the Fairhaven Coven, having the title of Adept. She's very openly flirtatious with Tara from the get-go and is one of her potential romantic partners. She refers to Wraiths (dark spirits) as Jinn, mentions she celebrates Nowruz and her favourite foods include Fesenjan, Jeweled Rice and Zeytoon Parvardeh.
Angus Seton is a baker of Scottish and Polish descent, whose shop is right next to the jewelry store run by his Puerto Rican fiancé, Francis Calderón. Angus is a member of the League of the Conscious Mind, something that causes friction with Francis, who doesn't like the League's teachings.
It is later revealed (after they've already gotten married) that Francis, like his older brother, is a witch and he joins the coven after they help free Angus from a Wraith, getting the title of Initiate (and eventually, Novice). After the coven is revealed, Angus, who has a fear of witches due to a family curse, feels conflicted at first, but ultimately declares he loves Francis no matter what.
Angus' favourite foods include Rumbledethumps, Skirlie and Pierogie, while Francis' include Arroz con Gandules and Asopao. In addition, they both have noticeable accents and Francis uses Spanish words, such as referring to a witch as a bruja and calling Angus cariño.
Aryel is a curupira demon, one of the Fae residing in Ravenwood Hollow, a magical community that exists between Fairhaven and the magical world of the Gloaming. He originated from the area of modern day Brazil and has a fondness of animals, and such, a strong dislike of the local rancher and butcher, as well as the former miners and is not above pranking people. His favourite foods include Malasada, Brigadeiro and Pacoquinha.
Bruno Soft is one of the elder residents of town, a fisherman who runs a bait shop and frequents the town bar. He is the son of a German immigrant, has been widowed for a while and has a somewhat estranged relationship with his son, Otto, the town's major and his wife, Vanessa, the teacher at Fairhaven's only school. He's not shown to be religious in any way and is shown to be progressive and accepting, such as when finding out witches exist and when referencing the fact that Tara's great-aunt was not straight.
His son, on the other hand, doesn't seem quite as accepting, being willing to put on witch trials and quick to accuse people of being evil and sowing seeds of chaos and fear. Otto's wife, Vanessa, turns out to be a witch who was rejected from the coven, and turned to dark magic to get back at them, nearly leading to a catastrophe, after which both her and her husband leave the island.
Cameron Conner, often called Messenger Cameron, leads the island's branch of the League of the Conscious Mind. A former Hollywood actor who was able to turn his life around after finding the League. His teachings are seen as controversial among townsfolk and his ideas of there being Malcontents (people who wish to do others harm), endanger the coven and wind up partially responsible for innocent people getting accused of witchcraft. After the coven is revealed, he starts questioning his beliefs and teachings. One of Tara's potential romantic partners.
Damon Mthembu-Haas is the South African owner of the local bar and a member of the coven by the title of Journeyman. His parents moved back to South Africa so his mother could return to her roots as a healer, leading to him inheriting his dad's bar. He's a kind and extroverted person who likes cooking up schemes and who is implied to have had a crush on the local florist before. He is one of Tara's potential romantic partners. His favourite foods include Cape Malay Curry, Bobotie and Chakalaka.
Giva Joshi is an Indian meteorologist who moves to Fairhaven after the bridge to the mountain pass is repaired. She's a practicing Hindu, and a lesbian, something that caused a split between her and her family, who wanted to sign her up for a well known matchmaker. She's curious and very passionate about her field, determined to figure out the cause behind Fairhaven's strange weather (caused by the coven having to turn the seasons magically). After Vanessa leaves, she becomes the new teacher, much to the kids' delight. Her favourite foods include Prawns Koliwada, Vad Pav and Pav Bhaji. She's one of Tara's potential romantic partners.
Gloria Miranda was a member of the Fairhaven Coven by the title of Illusionist, before her disappearance 4 years prior to the game's events. After her return, she becomes the new major, a post previously held by her husband. She is the mother of 2 children:
Violet is the local florist, who eventually boosts her store to serve as a boutique as well. She is a member of the coven, going by Acolyte at first, before being promoted to Herbalist, and eventually to Guardian.
Sebastian is one of the local school-children, working part-time at the stall and dreaming of leaving town as soon as he turns 18. The return of his mother and the reveal that he's a witch makes him decide to attend college online, at least for the first year.
The Miranda family's ethnicity isn't stated, tho they appear to be African-American.
Kai Hoapili is a Hawaiian surfer who wound up on the island after an incident. Whilst recovering, he met the owner of the local pop-up stall and eventually decided to stay and take over. He's very chill and easy-going, but admittedly misses being a part of the larger surfing community. He's one of Tara's potential romantic partners. It's mentioned in a comment that his community back home had religious practices, tho it's unclear if he himself is religious. His favourite foods include Haupia, Loco Moco and Manapua.

Ethnic Diversity in the Middle Ages
The other big thing a lot of whiny white fanboys tend to cry about when it comes to fantasy and historical medial is the existance of non-white people within medieval Europe. Which to me still is just... silly. If you know anything about European history, you should not believe something like that.
Because here is the thing: The Roman Empire also included quite a lot of Northern Africa. Where, you will not believe it, Black and Brown people lives. Who then would at times become citizens of Rome and would take over jobs within the Roman Empire. The most notable group might be the Nubian mercenaries, who were counted among the best military forces in the ancient world. As such the Roman army often took them along while they were colonizing Europe. And as it was with those things... Some of those Nubians ended up settling throughout all of Europe.
It should be noted that we have both historical evidence from Roman times, though, as well as archeological evidence that shows us that there were Black and brown people living both on the British isles and in parts of Scandinavia even prior to Rome. And no, we do not know where those came from. We just know they were there.
But even other than that... Medieval Europe was not a computer game with invisible walls. Africa was there. Asia was there. And people traded.
I said it before: The first European sources about Japan we have are from about 300 AD from a Roman merchant, who has travelled to China and then heard about the Japanese islands. It is also one of the few sources we have of someone talking about the indigenous people of Japan.
But yes, people travelled. People traded. We all hopefully know about the silk road. The trade route that went throughout Asia and ended in Europe. All sorts of stuff was traded here - and people travelled, too. And at times they ended up staying whereever they travelled to. Maybe because weather or health did not allow them to travel back, maybe because they found community in the place they travelled to.
And yes, people traded with Northern Africa, too. Now, subsaharan Africa is a different story. Yes, some people crossed over from there. But most of the trade with those areas happening during the last two centuries of the medieval period.
It also should be reminded that indeed the Mohrs ruled over Iberia throughout most of the medieval period, with reconquista only happening at the very end of the middle ages.
And of course Europe was also raided and invaded several times by the Ottomans, the Huns and the Mongols. Of whom some remained behind in Europe, too.
All of this is not to say that medieval Europe was as ethnically diverse as modern Europe is. It was not. But it was also not all white (which is of course without even going into the fact that the concept of whiteness did not yet exist).
Oh, and also realize that racism as we know it today was not really a think for at least the early medieval period. It only started to develop through the crusades (which is to say from 1100 AD forward). Something that was however a thing is religious discrimination and violence against religious minorities, which is to say mostly against jews and muslims. These especially took off, once the crusades started, but happened even before that. Which is also why a lot of Jews from Europe fled either west, to Iberia, or east, to the Ottoman empire, as muslims at the time did not discriminate against them in the same way.

Are Tajiks more related to Iranians/Afghanis or Kazakhs/Mongolians?
Tajiks are an ethnic group primarily found in Central Asia, particularly in modern-day Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. They speak the Tajik language, which is a dialect of Persian (Farsi) and are generally considered to be closely related to Iranians in terms of language, culture, and history.
Tajiks and Mongols are two distinct ethnic groups with different origins and histories. While there may have been some interaction and influence between the two groups over the centuries, there is no significant genetic or linguistic relationship between them.
The Tajik language is a member of the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family, which is the same branch as Persian (Farsi). The grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of Tajik are similar to those of Persian, and the two languages are mutually intelligible to a significant extent.
Culturally, Tajiks have been heavily influenced by Persian culture over the centuries, particularly during the period of the Samanid dynasty (9th-10th centuries CE), which was based in what is now modern-day Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The Samanid rulers were Persian-speaking and promoted Persian culture, literature, and art in their territories, which had a lasting impact on the region.
In terms of history, the lands inhabited by Tajiks were historically part of the greater Iranian cultural and political sphere, with ties to various Persian empires and dynasties such as the Achaemenids, Parthians, Sassanids, and Safavids. The region was also influenced by Islamic culture and traditions, which further connected it to the wider Iranian world.
Tajiks and Iranians share a close linguistic, cultural, and historical relationship, with the Tajik people being considered a branch of the greater Iranian cultural and linguistic family.

The 'Rivers of Blood' Speech by Enoch Powell
Birmingham, England April 20, 1968
"The supreme function of statesmanship is to provide against preventable evils. In seeking to do so, it encounters obstacles which are deeply rooted in human nature. One is that by the very order of things such evils are not demonstrable until they have occurred. At each stage in their onset there is room for doubt and for dispute whether they are present or not. People are disposed to mistake predicting troubles for causing troubles and even for desiring troubles. “If only,” they love to think, “if only people wouldn’t talk about it, it probably wouldn’t happen.” Perhaps this habit goes back to the primitive belief that the word and the thing, the name and the object, are identical. At all events, this is a dangerous fallacy. It is supremely dangerous in the case of a nation or a whole community. To see and not to speak would be the great betrayal.
The commonest error in politics is sticking to the carcass of dead policies. When the evidence of the eyes and ears stands in opposition to the conventional wisdom of the day, it is the latter which will be disregarded, in almost every case with dismaying results. A respectable person in England almost dreads to disagree with a profession so unworldly as the academic. At the same time he never doubts the education, training, and equipment of an Army which within our memories was raised to defend, under God, these great and Christian realms. How ready he will be to fall back upon the judgment of those he most despises!
It is one of the many contrasts between England and America that whereas in this country political debate and action proceeds upon the assumption that good intentions will always suffice to make everything turn out for the best, in the United States a much more cautious view prevails. In this country, if people believe that something would be nice if it were so, they are all for assuming that it will be so. In the United States the predilection is to make sure that it is so. In this country the argument is about intention and desirability; in the United States it is about effect and practicability.
One reason for this difference is perhaps that in this country politics and government are conducted as a kind of game, almost as a sport, against a backdrop of an ordered and secure society. In the United States government and politics are conducted in the very presence of risks and dangers and difficulties which are a real and ever-present part of the national experience. But what is a kind of luxury for us is a necessity for them, and we shall find ourselves paying a heavy price for our apathy and complacency.
In fifteen or twenty years, on present trends, there will be in this country three and a half million Commonwealth immigrants and their descendants. That is not my figure. That is the official figure given to Parliament by the spokesman of the Registrar General’s Office. There is no comparable official estimate of the increase in the indigenous population during the same period. In fifteen or twenty years the present immigrant population of Great Britain, which is estimated at between one and two million, will have grown to five million, approximately one-tenth of the whole population, and approaching that of Greater London. Of course, this would be a rapid and unprecedented transformation of a country which in 1948 was still almost homogeneously white. So great a number of immigrant people simply cannot be absorbed without such profound changes in the culture, social fabric, and nature of the population as to render the resulting society unrecognizable.
The great majority of immigrants are here for the long haul, with every intention of making a permanent home for themselves and their families, and with every right so to do. The existing population is already growing alarmed and agitated. Here I quote the words of a letter addressed to me by a constituent in North London: "The black man will have the whip hand over the white man." This is a reflection not only of the sense of helplessness and confusion, but also of resentment and hostility, which are increasingly felt and voiced. When the United States becomes concerned about a "racial problem," it calls in the National Guard, and their government knows that the call can be justified. Here, the “moderate and responsible” members of society as often as not are more apprehensive of the consequences of defending order than of the disorder itself.
Many of them, like the writer of this letter, regard the prospect with horror and foreboding. One of my constituents wrote to me in desperation. In a fortnight, she said, she would have to vacate her small house, where she and her husband have lived for 15 years, because a “crowd of Negroes” was moving into the street and had already made her life unbearable. She went on: “Mr. Powell, it is difficult to describe what the consequences are for us, with the constant noise, the constant threat of violence, and the dirt. We dare not go out of the house, because when we do we are followed by gangs of Negroes, who pelt us with stones and jeer at us. I am not a racialist, but I have never experienced the like in all my life. These people are not our people and our home is now not ours. Please do something about it.” (The words "Negro" and "racialist" are verbatim.)
It is, indeed, difficult to describe the consequences of the natural reaction of the original population to the remorseless transformation to which it is being subjected. To quote another constituent: “I have three children, all of whom are in school. In two of the three classrooms of my children there are, and there have been, Negro children. Each of my children has been assaulted by them, and each time they have tried to fight back. This morning I had to see a Negro teacher because my son had been whipped by one of these boys, but the teacher was not interested.”
It is not true that the immigrant population is consistently law-abiding. In the most serious of all crimes—murder—there is an increasing incidence of crime by coloured immigrants. In one case this year a coloured man was convicted of the murder of a white girl with whom he had been living, and in another, also in London, two coloured men were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a police constable. There has been an increase in attacks upon women, and here too there are constant reports of racial aspects.
For these and other reasons there is a rapidly increasing danger that this country will be the subject of the kind of inter-communal violence which is endemic in parts of the United States, and now for the same reasons is spreading to England. If I am right, and even if I am only partially right, if there is any element of truth in what I am saying, I am sure that the people of this country will listen to a voice warning of danger before it is too late.
Of course, the most strident voices will be raised to say that this is all a figment of the imagination; that there is nothing whatever to worry about. They will also say that I am pandering to the worst instincts of human nature. But when the official figures show that the immigrant and immigrant-descended population of this country will approach five million within twenty years, it is no good at the same time denying that the consequences of that are going to be serious and grave.
Yet I can already hear the chorus of execration. How dare I say such a horrible thing? How dare I stir up trouble and incite hatred? I am simply being prudent and responsible, and to give a warning before it is too late.
The sense of urgency will have to be felt. This country is not going to be easily forgiven for throwing away its future. The vision of the nation is being blinded by sentimentality and the unwillingness to face the facts.
I say to you that in my lifetime this country will look and feel like a different country. Even now, in parts of our cities, the transformation is evident. They found that 15 per cent of the population of Wolverhampton is now non-white. The people are questioning and alarmed. They have cause to be alarmed. If only the House of Commons would reflect the views of the people in its legislation, there would be no cause for alarm. But they do not, and I believe it is a great betrayal.
We must be mad, literally mad, as a nation to be permitting the annual inflow of some 50,000 dependents, who are for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant-descended population. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. I simply cannot believe that any rational person can look on in this way without some sense of impending disaster.
But that is what is happening. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. Indeed, I am astonished at the sanity of those who make the decisions. They simply cannot be mad, literally mad, in their actions and attitudes. And yet they are.
For these reasons, among many others, I believe that immigration is the issue which will determine the future of this country. The House of Commons must be brought to understand that it is an issue of survival. If not, we shall have handed over to our children a legacy of the most monstrous growth of all time. This is not fantasy. This is not invention. This is not cynicism. It is reality.
In this country, in fifteen or twenty years’ time, the black man will have the whip hand over the white man. For these reasons, among many others, I believe that immigration is the issue which will determine the future of this country. We must be mad, literally mad, to be permitting the annual inflow of some 50,000 dependents, who are for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant-descended population. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre.
I simply do not have the stomach to go on with this, though it is not yet finished. There is a danger, a clear danger, that we will be overwhelmed. Indeed, it is not only a danger, it is a certainty.
I do not believe there is a single person in this country who does not believe it. They are all sensible people. They all know what is happening, though they are afraid to speak out.
For these reasons, among many others, I believe that immigration is the issue which will determine the future of this country. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre.
I have left this country in despair. But I do not despair of our country. I believe in the British people. The significance of this cannot be overlooked. There is a danger, a clear danger, that we will be overwhelmed. Indeed, it is not only a danger, it is a certainty.

A Short Apologetic for Broader Reading Patterns
This post started when someone commented on an old blog post about a bibliography about church planting that I posted in 2010! (That is ancient in the blogosphere.) Anyway, when that bibliography was updated in 2021, I included some of the comments below. But in reading that 2021 post, I thought there was room for expansion in light of the current cancel culture. So, . . . A short apologetic for…

Ok, saying this because it seems some of you desperately need to hear it.
Neither Latino nor Hispanic are races or ethnicities. Someone from Spain and someone from Peru won't have the same ethnic background. Hell, two people from Peru may not even have the same ethnic background! Being Hispanic means you speak Spanish, nothing else. And latinoamerica is a region (and an incredibly diverse one too), not a race.
Some of you just label anything that isn't Usamerican an ethnicity because you see the US as the default.
#seriously I've seen people saying mexican is an ethnicity#just say you want to stereotype people and be done with it jesus christ#latinoamérica is so fucking diverse for you people to act like everyone's the same#latam tag#latam#latine tag#latinoamerica#latin america

RiverClan Refugees
Gorseclaw and Lizardtail want to join ThunderClan because they watched Harelight, their only other family, get publicly executed in front of them
They are trying their hardest to be useful and polite while being refugees in ThunderClan, and get mistreated for the effort-- having their food preferences mocked, getting told they're taking up space, hearing a steady stream of slurs, etc
After one more mass shaming session where Squirrelstar asserts they won't be accepting new cats, Sunbeam and Fernstripe join in on condescending them, and we get this;
"It would have felt bad turning them away, but if they chose to go home (AFTER BEING BULLIED FOR SEVERAL CHAPTERS) then there was no need to feel guilty"
This does not come across as these two earnestly missing home and choosing to go back; it comes across like they're accepting the fact that they are unwanted and getting out of dodge before it gets worse.
Honestly, I'm at the point where I can't call this a lack of self awareness. The difference between ThunderClan's treatment of Gorse and Lizard vs RiverClan's treatment of Wasp is obvious to me. The narrative is straightforwardly pro-xenophobic as long as it isn't overtly violent.
Social bigotry is fine. Good, even, to separate the "desirable" immigrants from the "undesirable" ones. What defines those categories? A good one will assimilate fully and leave their culture behind; a bad one only wants safety and a better life for their family.
Terrifying, imo, considering how the irl overton window has shifted on migration at the time of writing this in 2025. Does the spectre of the times loom over these words as I speak them? I hope not.
#Bones reads asc#Just in case this is stumbled across in the future and the context is unclear;#I am writing this as an American who watched the democrat's campaign for presidency completely buckle on immigration issues#The conservative position is mass deportation on the scale of ethnic cleansing#The liberal position had shifted to defensively citing their toughness on border/migration issues#There is essentially no opposition in the mainstream democratic party. The ground has been utterly ceded.#This is a notable change from (empty but present) liberal sentiment that 'diversity makes us stronger'#Life being reflected in art i suppose

How many ethnicities are in Nipon(japan)?
Yamato Japanese 123,900,000
Ryukyuan Japanese1,300,000
Chinese 650,000
Korean 525,000
The Yamato people (大和民族, Yamato minzoku, literally "Yamato ethnicity") or the Wajin (和人, Wajin, 倭, literally "Wa people") is a term to describe the ethnic group that comprises over 98% of the population of Japan. Genetic and anthropometric studies has showed that the Yamato are an admixture of the migratory Kofun and Yayoi, who arrived from mainland East and Southeast Asia via the Korean Peninsula, as well as the indigenous Jōmon that were already living on the Japanese archipelago for thousands of years prior.
It can also refer to the first people that settled in Yamato Province (modern-day Nara Prefecture). Generations of Japanese historians, linguists, and archeologists have debated whether the word is related to the earlier Yamatai (邪馬臺). The Yamato clan set up Japan's first and only dynasty. The clan became the ruling faction in the area, and incorporated native Japanese, Chinese and Korean migrants. The clan leaders also elevated their own belief system that featured ancestor worship into a national religion known as Shinto.
The Ryukyuan people (Okinawan: 琉球民族 (るーちゅーみんずく), romanized: Ruuchuu minzuku or どぅーちゅーみんずく, Duuchuu minzuku, Japanese: 琉球民族/りゅうきゅうみんぞく, romanized: Ryūkyū minzoku, also Lewchewan or Loochooan)[8] are a Japonic-speaking East Asianethnic group native to the Ryukyu Islands, which stretch between the islands of Kyushu and Taiwan.[9] Administratively, they live in either the Okinawa Prefecture or the Kagoshima Prefecture within Japan. They speak one of the Ryukyuan languages, considered to be one of the two branches of the Japonic language family, the other being Japanese and its dialects. Hachijō is sometimes considered by linguists to constitute a third branch

words mean things
i got into an argument with someone today because they said not all jews are ethnically jewish, and i said -- yes we are, and they said well converts aren't ethnically jewish. and i said... all jews are ethnically jewish, but we're not all the same race. this person was like well i think of race as a social construct and ethnicity as something you can't change, and like. the definition of ethnicity:
the quality or fact of belonging to a population group or subgroup made up of people who share a common cultural background or descent.
the definition of race:
any one of the groups that humans are often divided into based on physical traits regarded as common among people of shared ancestry
and these are dictionary definitions, not my personal ones. so yeah, man, all jews including converts? ethnically jewish. my rabbi makes a point of this, actually, when discussing conversion -- converts are the same as non converts according to jewish law. you convert into the religion and ethnicity. ethnicity is not about DNA.
i dunno, it bugged me.
#judaism#jews#converts are ethnically jewish#all jews are ethnically jewish#it's an ethno-religion#stop trying to make converts 'less' jewish thanks#jews are RACIALLY diverse#just because YOU'VE decided a word means something#does NOT mean it does
