Alcohol consumption in the United States from 1977 to 2024 illustrates significant shifts shaped by cultural, economic, and public health dynamics. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, alcohol consumption was at a relatively high level, driven by the popularity of beer, wine, and spirits.

The health risks of excessive alcohol consumption, such as liver disease, cancer, and mental health challenges, continue to be focal points in public health discourse. These are dose related and seen more with heavy drinking. Heavy drinking is defined as men consuming five or more drinks on any day or 15 or more per week, or women consuming four or more on any day or eight or more drinks per week.

Some studies even show liver injury at low levels of consumption, so less is better; however one drink or less for women and two drinks or less for men on any single day is not associated with increased risk. Drinking at this level may reduce, though not eliminate, the risks of alcohol consumption.

I went to a party at which rum was served. I thought rum's EtOH proof was similar to beer's.

Turns out it's 40%.

Due to the long half-life of this medication, and risk for increased sensitivity to the effects of alcohol in combination with Phenobarbital, patients who leave the hospital before the seven day taper is complete should NOT be continued on Phenobarbital at discharge. The full 7 day course is not always necessary and, if clinically feasible, can be discontinued before the 7 days.
