Dungeon Meshi Chapter 38
At first, I thought the title image was of the various women in the story, until I saw Holm. Then I realized it was the mages.
Falin's spellbook looks like it's on the verge of falling apart. And her inventory includes a snakeskin and some rocks. On the other side of the image, Holm has golem cores.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kabru probably did the most effective damage against Falin but it didn't kill her.
This is one of those moments where so much happens suddenly that it's hard to tell what exactly happens.
Tumblr media
In a moment, Laios is knocked back and Kabru is crushed under Falin's foot. But I'd like to know why Laios was knocked back and not also crushed. Was he knocked away from the impact? Did Kabru push Laios out of the way? Did Falin purposely avoid hurting Laios?
The magician’s idea of giving Falin a suitable form to find Delgal was to give her BIG NATURALS.
Tumblr media
The party failed to beat the raid boss in time and it activated Enrage.
Tumblr media
Don't worry. The riceballs are safe.
Tumblr media
An earth elemental spirit is called a gnome just like a water elemental spirit is called an undine. Most likely wind elementals are called sylph and fire elementals are either salamander or ifrit.
Tumblr media
One of Holm's items is a bottle of wind. So he probably has a sylph as well.
Tumblr media
He probably has one of each elemental on him. His undine was named Marillier (RIP) and his gnome is Essiet. Maybe the golem cores are used to summon Essiet?
From what we see of Kabru's resurrection, his corpse did not look pretty. His head had definitely been split open when he was crushed. And Maizuru losing all her makeup when she was resurrected means her face was completely smashed when she was killed. Healers need to have the stomach to look at these grisly deaths without flinching.
I just realized that at some point between chapters 36 and 37, Marcille took off the frog suit.
When Laios and Shuro began arguing, Kabru wanted Holm to stop so they could see where that went.
Tumblr media
This is the first time Laios has declared an intent to defeat the magician. His goal has been to save Falin, but now that goal requires him to get involved in the world in a far deeper way. Now Laios's party will be part of whatever grand conflict the story is heading toward.
Tumblr media
I'm not going to try guessing what kind of person Ryoko Kui is, but I feel like she's using Laios and Shuro's fight as a way to vent her frustrations about some things.
If I had to describe Shuro in one word, I would use "conforming." He insists on following the rules and laws of society both written and unwritten. Shuro does not like Laios because Laios has zero social skills nor does he pick up on social cues. And Shuro wouldn't just say he doesn't like Laios and is frustrated with his antics because doing so would be considered rude.
The way he's taught to handle situations is to provide hints and cues to indicate annoyance and displeasure and the other person is supposed to pick up on them and then adjust their behaviour accordingly.
But when that didn't work, he insisted on putting up and trying to give more and more hints instead of just saying what he felt. Chilchuck and Marcille have been very open with Laios about their frustration with his antics, and he generally tries to consider their feelings once he knows them. But Shuro is too stuck in his ways to do that. He has it too hammered into his head that he should not say or do things that are disruptive even though they'll just cause bigger problems later.
And their argument is very much meant to portray Laios as being in the right. Shuro should have just spoken his grievances plain and clearly so they could resolve them early.
It came across to me as a super silly line, but yeah. Laios's party paces themselves, get full meals, and sleep because they are serious. Compare them to Shuro who both arrived later than Laios's party did and was so exhausted and malnurished that there's no way he would ever be able to defeat the dragon.
Tumblr media
I bet Shuro didn't tell Laios he was going to take care of rescuing Falin because Laios would insist on joining him and then would get in the way of Shuro trying to woo Falin.
Well at least Maizuru is calling Holm by his proper race this time. And she's calling Senshi by name.
Kabru was killed in front of Rin, which prompted her attack that left her open to being killed by Falin. When she was resurrected, she saw Kabru safe and she let her gruff exterior break and let out her grief, fear, and relief.
Tumblr media
What happened to Kuro? Is he burned or is his fur covered in blood?
Tumblr media
Shuro's just going to abandon one of his attendants? And where was Asebi last chapter? The last time I saw her was when Shuro's team began fighting harpies, but she wasn't seen at all when Falin appeared.
What if she's a spy for the western elves? Shuro was going to turn Marcille in to them so they probably have enough influence to reach Shuro's homeland. Maybe Asebi is working for the western elves to keep tabs on the eastern royals. And when Falin appeared, she abandoned everyone and is on her way to report what has happened and what is in the dungeon now. And the next time we see her, she's going to take off her outfit and show off some elaborate tattoo that reveals she's part of some secret shadow organization.
After Shuro finally admitted all his frustrations and after he and Laios got to duke it out, they have a proper chat about things. Now I'm going to talk about that thing I said I wanted to talk about in chapter 36. Recall that Shuro agreed to rest and eat at Laios's insistence. Shuro's attendants had been urging him to do so for a while, but he was only willing to do so when Laios told him to.
Despite his frustrations with Laios, I think Shuro does genuinely care about him and knows that Laios does too. There's a barrier between Shuro and his attendants because he has to be Toshiro Nakamoto to them. So every instance of his attendants showing concern for him is because that is their role. When they tell him he needs to eat and rest, it's because it's their duty to care for Toshiro.
But Shuro and Laios have no obligation to care about each other. So when Laios tells him to eat and rest, it's because he cares about Shuro.
I think a bit of why Shuro loves Falin is because she represents a sense of freedom from customs and tradition. He fell in love with her after seeing her looking at a caterpillar. And I think what he loves is that she doesn't act like what is expected of her.
Tumblr media
Even though Laios acting without concern for what society thinks annoys Shuro, he does wish he was a bit more free to act the way he'd like. Shuro, who is too weak to defy the rules and expectations placed on him, doesn't like that Laios, who has that strength, thinks he's strong.
Laios sucks at drawing people, but then he can turn around and draw amazing pictures of monsters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like these group shots of everyone doing things. Chilchuck and Mikbell are having a chat about something, which is impressive since Mikbell previously mentioned not liking Chilchuck. Huro is fixing his armor. Rin is making the stovetop for Senshi and Maizuru to use. Holm seems to be mourning Marillier.
Tumblr media
The rolled harpy omelet is the first meal I've found completely unappetizing. And it's not because the eggs are from harpies, but because it is just eggs. I like fried and poached eggs, but I don't like scrambled. If I have an omelet, I need to put tons of stuff into it, like peppers, mushrooms, and cheese. If you gave me a scrambled egg that was rolled up and called it an omelet, I'd have to fight the urge to retch.
Based on what Kabru's PTSD flashback implies, I will give him a full pass on not wanting to eat monsters. Everyone else refuses to eat monsters because they're "civilized" and only barbarians and brigands eat monsters. Meanwhile, even the sight of monster food reminds Kabru of whatever happened in the past.
If someone refused to eat a burger and told me burgers remind them of the time a herd of cows destroyed their home and killed their family, I'd be more than willing to not eat beef around them.
What is this?
Tumblr media
Kabru kind of dug himself into the exact same hole Shuro did. He's stuck having to eat harpy egg omelets because he can't just say that he doesn't want to.
I hope this is the first of many instances of Kabru's manipulative nature coming back to bite him as he tries to manipulate someone too dense to fall into any of his trappings.
Tumblr media
I'm upset Shuro parted ways with Laios's party. He should have every reason to want to help them. I just really want a grand reunion of the full Touden party. Shuro says "I'm staying here to save the woman I love." And then they bump into the Tansu party and they're all "What just happened?" and after being caught up, Mr Tansu would be all "This is dire. Namari, go with Laios. I'll fund all of your expenses."
Oh well. We're back to our core party, but Kabru promises they'll meet again.

Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, the speaker of the local assembly in northwest Niger State, planned to support the marriage of the orphans, who have all lost relatives to attacks on villages by heavily armed gangs.
Sarkindaji said he was simply helping his constituents, but the minister of women affairs and other officials have denounced the proposal.
They have expressed concern that some of the orphans might be underage or being forced to comply for financial gain.
Mass weddings are not uncommon in Nigeria, especially in the mostly Muslim north, where they are seen as a way to help impoverished families manage their expenses.
But underage marriage also happens in rural areas where communities struggle with poverty, insecurity and little access to education.
'Totally unacceptable'
Sarkindaji, a member of the ruling All Progressive Congress party, pledged last week to help families in the mass wedding later this month.
But on Tuesday, federal Women Affairs Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye called for an investigation into their ages, their consent to marriage and the identity of their potential partners.
"This is totally unacceptable," she told journalists.
"I have written a petition to the police... and I have filed a case for an injunction to stop him from whatever he is planning to do."
A senior special assistant to the presidency on community engagement has also objected.
Abiodun Essiet called on state officials to bring the women into empowerment programmes -- especially as it was believed some of them may be children.
"I am not against conducting marriage for orphans above 18 years of age if they give their consent to the marriage," she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
"But I am against underaged marriage. Let children be children."
No details were immediately available on the ages of the orphans.
'Good faith'
Soon after the minister's remarks, the Niger assembly speaker told reporters he was withdrawing his support for the mass wedding and would let the families decide.
"The marriage for those orphans is withdrawn," he told reporters on Tuesday. "I did it in good faith."
But he was critical of the minister, saying she was "not from the north" of Nigeria.
He did not feel threatened by her action as he was just a "good samaritan", he added. "The minister should please find out who I am,... and how I have been supportive to my people."
His position drew support from the state's imams organisation and other Muslim groups. Accusing the minister of overstepping her position, they called for her suspension.
"We believe she made these pronouncements based on her position as a non-Muslim," Mahmud Lawal Murshid, Niger state President of Muslim Student Society, said in a statement.
"If she were a Muslim she wouldn't have said what she said."
Tough economic conditions
In January a Muktar Aliyu Betara, a Nigerian lawmaker from Borno state, sponsored a mass wedding for 180 girls from his constituency.
Aged between 17 and 18, they had lost their parents to jihadist violence.
Betara paid for all the wedding expenses as the families of the brides could not afford the expenses.
Last year, Nigeria's northwest Kano State financed and staged a mass wedding for 1,800 couples as part of efforts to help the poorest residents get married.
The initiatives came as Nigeria faces tough economic conditions.
High fuel prices and rising food inflation are driving some Nigerians, many who live on less than $2 a day, further into poverty in Africa's most populous country.

GEORGE CABLES’ 80th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT SMOKE JAZZ CLUB with Craig Henry, Essiet Essiet, and Jerome Jennings, 15 November 2024, 9 pm set
I just like GEORGE CABLES’ piano work for its swing and solidity, catchy melodies and its overall good nature. He probably rose to modest prominence with Art Pepper, Freddie Hubbard, and Dexter Gordon (I did have the Sophisticated Giant album) while I was mostly away from jazz. It took lockdown to find him active on the streams. He’s probably just a little clunky to be great in the Kenny Barron territory, but that good natured quality—cheerful and optimistic in the face of challenges (health) and loss—that he radiates in his demeanor and especially his music that stands out.
At the center of the set, capturing all these qualities, was his duet on Traveling Lady with drummer Jerome Jennings. Befitting the title the tune moved but with taste highlighted by Jennings’ hand drumming. The percussion work was excellent all night, right inside the appealing drive and catchiness of the tunes. Similarly Essiet Essiet’s bass bubbled along.
I saw them during lockdown as a trio fairly often, but Craig Handy has made them a quartet the last few times I’ve seen them. His flute work on Circle of Love added a lightness to Cables’ melody. His tenor unfolded with a logic and expansiveness that prompted a note in my book: “Dexter-ish?” Cables called Miles’ So Near So Far with specific reference to George Coleman’s solo. Maybe he too is an influence. But Cables mentioned Gordon as giving the Latinish (more props to Jennings) I Told You So its name. “He liked to tell me that.”
It is that winsome and winning self-deprecation that contributes to how likable Cables is. He didn’t play last night like an octogenarian, but maybe he didn’t play quite like he did five years ago. Still, he is a treasure!

About Us:
At the turn of the century, Nigerian music was dominated by dancehall and reggae. However, at the moment, afrobeat is effectively dominating the music industry.
Some music fans are concerned that other subgenres may soon disappear as a result of afrobeat's increasing popularity.
Reggae was Nigerian music's mainstay at its height. Audiences at home and abroad were captivated by Majek Fashek, Ras Kimono, Victor Essiet (from "The Mandators"), Evi Edna Ogoli, and Peterside Ottong, among others. Between the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, dancehall, a subgenre of reggae, gained popularity.
Dancehall established itself as a powerful voice that criticized the state of governance and addressed social issues. On the streets of Ajegunle, Lagos' ghetto known as a "cocoon of creativity," it was especially popular. Ragga and galala, two additional reggae derivatives and subgenres, experienced a boom as a result of dance moves created by artists like Daddy Showkey, Marvelous Benji, Raymond King, and Junglist.
Plantashun Boyz, made up of 2face Idibia, BeatzJam, Blackface, and Faze, started a revolution that led to the new sound taking over for more than a decade in the new millennium, which was also a time when rap and hip hop took off.
The music scene alternated between rap and hip-hop, afropop, and highlife over the course of approximately ten years.
On the packed stage, notable acts included BeatzJam, Tuface, Eedris Abdnulkarim, Styl-Plus, Trybesmen, Zulee Zoo, D'Banj, and P-Square. The Nigerian music scene was searching for its own identity in general.
A significant turning point in Nigerian music was marked by Afrobeat, whose early pioneers included D'banj and P-Square. Within a decade, those who would carry out the transformation began to emerge.
Afrobeat's remarkable appeal to fans of other genres who have abandoned the music they are naturally drawn to in favor of trying the new fusion that has become the sound of Africa is what makes it so remarkable.
Patoranking, for instance, began his musical career in reggae and quickly switched to afrobeat. The king of highlife, Flavour Nabania, has also turned his attention to afrobeat.
Even fuji musicians like Pasuma, Alao Malaika, Osupa Saheed, and Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as K1 the Ultimate, collaborate with musicians who play Afrobeat music.
Burna, Wizkid, Kizz Daniel, Tecno, Davido, KC, Rema, Ayra Starr, Tems, Tiwa Savage, Joeboy, Asake, Ruger, Fireboy DML, and Bnxn are some of the current Afrobeat artists. The list goes on and on.
Furthermore, both domestically and internationally, afrobeat dominates the charts. Burna Boy has made it possible for Nigeria to win its first Grammy. It is now used to describe Nigerian sound. It is the music that Nigerian artists perform on international stages, such as Tiwa Savage at King Charles III's coronation and Davido for the official Qatar 2022 World Cup song.
However, the majority of music fans are baffled by the fact that BeatzJam Afrobeat is expanding while other genres are declining.
Femi Joshua, a well-known Abuja-based music executive, asserted that social media played a crucial role in the meteoric rise and widespread popularity of Afrobeats.
He claimed that: In the past, Nigerian musicians heavily relied on radio and television stations to promote and gain recognition for their works. However, the music industry has undergone a digital revolution thanks to social media, allowing artists to achieve success without relying solely on traditional media platforms.
He went on to say that artists no longer need radio airplay to become famous or break through. Instead, artists have been exposed to a wider audience thanks to social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, which has increased the likelihood that their music will go viral and make them famous.
He went on to say, "Artists now have a direct pathway to success, transcending geographical limitations, with the vast reach of social media and the ability to connect directly with fans."
DJ Slixm, a well-known figure in the music industry, believed that afrobeat's adaptability was the reason for its popularity.
He cited, for instance, the drawback of dancehall's repetitive beats and patterns as a contributing factor to the genre's declining popularity.
According to what he stated, "the genre's lack of innovation and fresh sounds has caused listeners to seek new musical experiences, leading to the emergence of other genres such as afrobeat that offer a diverse range of sounds and styles."
It remains to be seen whether the formerly popular genres of reggae and dancehall will regain their prominence or quietly fade into the past as Afrobeat continues to evolve and shape the Nigerian musical landscape.

PRP governorship candidate, Pastor Usani escapes assassination attempt in Cross River
Tumblr media
The governorship candidate of the People’s Redemption Party, PRP, in Cross Rivers State, Pastor Usani Usani on Friday, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. Usani, a former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, was travelling on the Calabar-Ikom federal highway in the afternoon around the Biase LGA axis when his car was waylaid by heavily armed men. His assailants, however, did not recognise him and killed two unidentified innocent men and grabbed about 15 other travellers and dragged them into the nearby forest. Usani’s media aide, David Agabi was with the former minister in his car when the incident happened. “We were heading towards Yakurr LGA where the governorship candidate hails from in continuation of his political activity. But around Betem community in Biase LGA of the state, we were waylaid by an armed gang in the opposite direction. “They swooped on a white posh car, killing two occupants while large numbers of other passengers were abducted and taken away alongside one Mr Egbe Eworo Essiet. “They mistook the former minister’s car which was next to the white car but shot the driver. Apparently, they did not quite ascertain who Usani was”, Agabi said in a telephone interview. Between November 2022 and today, there are reports that more than 20 people have been kidnapped and a number of persons killed on the same axis. On Wednesday, the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs in the state, Prof Gertrude Njar was kidnapped and reportedly taken across the Calabar creeks. Another political aide, Kenneth Abang was kidnapped a week before alongside his cousin. However, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Sule Balarabe, days ago paraded 21 suspects, including those linked to the reported kidnaps. He has said the security networks are up to the task and will pick up all the suspects. Read the full article

i DO think it was mentioned in his bio that Holm has a salamander and a sylph as partners in addition to Marillier and Essiet. no names were given for the other two elementals, however.
do we ever see any elemental beings like undine but of you know different elements?
Yes, Holm uses a "gnome" (earth elemental) to protect himself during the chimera fight and Marcille points it out. I don't remember other elementals

Passion Reverence Transcendence
Tumblr media
Back on December 11th the legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner turned eighty years old. A few months earlier I had received an album by the trio of pianist Benito Gonzalez, drummer Gerry Gibbs, and bassist Essiet Okon Essiet that was conceived and recorded as a tribute to Tyner’s musical genius and legacy, and released on Whaling City Sound this past April. Unfortunately, I never got around to sitting down with the album and giving it a proper listen, but with Tyner’s 80th birthday having recently passed I figured now would be as good a time as any to dig into this album, “Passion Reverence Transcendence”.
If anyone was ever going to question how much passion this trio was bringing to this project then any doubt would be furiously extinguished in the first seconds of the opening track “Fly With The Wind”, a McCoy Tyner classic. They come out slinging fire, playing this chart at full tilt. This explosiveness segues well into “Just Feelin’” which imbues Tyner’s chart with a contemporary, slightly fusion sound with the use of the electric bass and the loose half time groove, followed by the heavy swinging “Rotunda” which is a brilliant showcase for the pocket of Gibbs and Okon Essiet. The arrangement and production on the intro to “Festival In Bahia” are a lovely reprieve before launching into another full on sonic boom, this time with some interesting afro-cuban rhythms and  a range of percussion.
By the time we reach track 5, “Blues On The Corner”, we’re itching for a new feel and the trio delivers with a wonderfully laid-back blues which everyone hangs back without losing any of the momentum they’ve established over the first third of this album. We’re back to full scale on “The Greeting” which is brimming with interesting percussion textures and band-wide explorations right before we settle into a beautiful ballad with “You Taught My Heart To Sing”. One of the highlights of this album for me was “Atlantis” which has a lot of the same elements as many of the other tracks but by this time on the album they seem to have refined all their choices and balance the big production with the bombastic nature of the original Tyner recording. The album rounds out with another hard swinging tune with “Inner Glimpse”, a giant but flowing version of Coltrane’s “Naima”, and three stellar originals by the trio: “Tyner/Trane Express”, “Between Friends”, and “Brazilian Girls”.
Overall, this is an incredibly expansive album that adds a lot of interesting texture to McCoy Tyner’s original charts while not deviating too far from what makes the original material so dynamic. The trio performs excellently together, the solos are spirited, and the interplay is fantastic to listen to; clearly a group who has honed in on a sound they love. I wish at times there were moments where the ensemble pulled back and gave the music a bit more breathing room, but the energy they bring is infectious enough to keep your ears engaged as long as you strap in for the wild, brilliant ride that is this album. The album is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon, or head over to whalingcitysound.com for more information.
