Sasza
[Large Text: Sasza]
Hey! My name is Sasza and I use he/him pronouns. I am a disabled artist who loves to write and draw characters like me. I am autistic, (mildly) intellectually disabled and have several physical conditions including dyspraxia, severe hyperkyphosis, cranial nerve diseases (causing double vision, chronic pain and a facial difference among other things), and HSD. Sometimes I use a cane. I'm very passionate about accessibility and disability representation in all kinds of media - books, comics, video games, and any other kind of art that's out there.
Bert
[Large Text: Bert]
Hello! I'm Bert (previously Mason), and I use he/they pronouns. I am a writer who loves to write plays and fiction with characters like me and my friends. I am autistic and have ADHD, I have psychotic PTSD and a DID system. Physical health-wise I have migraines, fibromyalgia, and a lateral lisp. I love talking about representation and ways we can make a kinder and more inclusive space everywhere we go.
Sparrow
[large text: Sparrow]
Hi, I’m sparrow, they/he for me. I’m a disabled artist who makes a lot of disabled characters like myself and probably like a quarter of the world. I have autism and ADHD, among other brain things, as well as chronic pain in both my jaw and my knee and ankle. I also have POTS and some sort of sleep disorder. I am a sometimes cane user as well. I really enjoy research and thoughtful art that makes people feel seen. Aside from that, I am a huge fan of historical fiction and really enjoy fantasy as well.
Rot
[Large text: Rot]
My name is Rot, I use all pronouns including neo pronouns as well as any rot and insect themed nounself pronouns. I’m an artist who loves putting disability in my stories. I’m mostly undiagnosed due to medical neglect and have chronic fatigue, hypersomnia & chronic pain that ranges from mild to debilitating. My known disabilities are pots, ganglion cysts, nerve damage, autism (level unknown), asthma, GERD, anxiety and psychosis. I have a metal implant, use a cane and am mostly verbal and use aac infrequently. I have experience with temporary palsy, needing carers (family members who stepped up, not hired carers) and being in a wheelchair, though I currently don't have any of those.
Virus
[Large Text: Virus]
Hello! I go by Virus and I use She/Her but anyone can use any pronouns for me, have fun with it. I'm a writer—mostly fanfiction—who has been in fandom very long and used to be a classical musician. I have Hypermobile Ehler Danlos Syndrome along with it's fun co-morbidities (MCAS, POTS, Gastroparesis, Fibromyalgia, and Von Willebrandes). I also have Pan-Hypopituitarism which is the following: Adrenal Insufficiency, Hypothyroidism, Diabetes Insipidus, Precocious Puberty, Growth Hormone Deficiency, Hyperprolactinemia/galactorrhea, as well as High Estrogen and Testosterone issues. I have Pituitary Dwarfism/Proportional Dwarfism, Myoclonic Epilepsy, and a Speech Disorder. I used to have a Port-a-cath, Picc-Lines, and a feeding tube, amongst many other things. Phew, now that that's over. I love every art form with a favour towards music, writing and the fiber arts. I love seeing representation no matter how big or small especially in medias that rep is often glossed over!
Rock
[Large Text: Rock]
Hi! I am Rock; any pronouns are okay. I am a writer, mainly of sci-fi and fantasy, and I love adding all sorts of disabled characters. I am hard of hearing (mild-moderate bilateral hearing loss) and have profound auditory processing disorder. I have scoliosis, POTS, and lower-body muscle weakness so I am a full-time mobility aid user. I am also intersex; I have several hormone deficiencies among other conditions as a result of my intersex variation. I am excited to join the mod team!
Aaron
[Large Text: Aaron]
Hey, I'm Aaron, he/him. I'm a writer of fantasy, science fiction, dystopia, utopia, and historical, and I like writing incorporating casts of disabled characters into all of them and reworking magic, technology, and science to accommodate them. I have a TBI, a lot wrong with my speech, cognitive issues, slight developmental disability, myofascial pain syndrome, medium support needs autistic but fully verbal, OCD, multiple types of anxiety, PTSD, depression, severe ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, articulatory initiation anomia, medically significant migraines, a chronic headache, chronic pain, and chronic fatigue. I'm also visibly disabled (one of those people who looks autistic) and transmasc. And I can't wait to see what amazing things you guys come u with.
Zohar
[Large Text: Zohar]
Hello everyone! I'm a new mod, and you can call me Zohar. I'm a writer of fantasy and sci-fi for the most part, and definitely prioritize disability, LGBT, and Indigenous representation in my work. I am Blind with a form of Albinism/strabismus/ptosis, along with some hearing loss. I am intersex/transgender with mixed gonadal dysgenesis (XO/XY Turner Syndrome) that goes hand in hand with GHD/pituitary dwarfism and affects my skeletal and hormonal health. I also have POTS and complex DID caused by RAMCOA and am comfortable answering asks about that. He or She pronouns is fine with me. I can't wait to help out here!
Icarus
[Large Text: Icarus]
Hello all! My name is Icarus (He/Him). I'm a new mod here and a writer of original work (Primarily contemporary short fiction and cosmic horror) with some fanfiction on the side. I have been diagnosed with ADHD, autism, PTSD, Tourette's Syndrome along with several other mental and physical health conditions. I also had epilepsy, asthma, and a heart condition as a child but have since grown out of them. I am currently seeking a diagnosis for something causing a few different symptoms including chronic pain, mobility issues, sensitivity in my joints/bones, progressive vision loss (Currently to the point where I have very little to no peripheral vision), and dizziness/fainting episodes. I am a full time cane user at the advice of my physio. I am also a gay trans man and in full-time university studies.
Jess
[Large text: Jess]
Hey y'all! I'm Jess, and I use she/her. I'm 35, and I work full time behind the scenes in the grocery industry (in an office, designing shelf layouts!). I enjoy writing and reading slice-of-life stories mostly. I especially like exploring how certain magical elements can be parallels for disability. I also do art, including some 3D illusion chalk art. As for my disabilities: I have multiple sclerosis, and a few issues that have come from that, including severe permanent damage from optic neuritis. I was briefly 100% blind in my left eye, but a small amount of vision returned. The residual vision causes some hard-to-describe double vision, so I wear a completely opaque occlusive contact lens on my bad eye to help me see more clearly. I also had a period of time when I suffered from paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia, a rare movement disorder. I also have a body-focused repetitive behavior disorder (dermatillomania) and visible scars from that. I'm looking forward to being helpful!

hello, here is the long-overdue bran post in which i ramble about this kid’s health in one place rather than scattered across the tags of various posts. content warnings for general discussion of chronic/terminal sickness in someone relatively young.
the Fae Incident (summarized): bran was Taken by the fae and kept in the fae realm for about a week. he lost track of time entirely while there. they did not provide human food and only offered fae food. bran went without food for several days before eventually succumbing to hunger and eating the fae food. when feldmire stole him back, bran’s transition from the fae realm back to the human realm was so abrupt and violent that his soul shattered. a shard of Fae soul lodged itself in one of the gaps left behind.
the Effects:
observant people often suspect something is physically wrong with bran upon meeting him. he is thin, pale, and looks perpetually tired.
as a result of eating fae food, bran can no longer eat human food and must eat the fae food feld steals for him. human food tastes like mud and rot to bran and makes him sick if he eats more than a bite. feld only steals small amounts of food to avoid punishment from the fae, so bran never has much to eat. the fae realm also messed with his sense of time, so he loses track of time and forgets things easier now. he can still lie, but the Fae shard in his soul means that lying now causes him discomfort (throat pain/soreness).
i use comparisons moving forward because i find it helpful, but feel free to ask for clarifications if you have any questions! importantly, bran’s sickness is chronic and his condition will worsen over time.
bran’s abrupt departure from the fae realm to the human realm resulted in a condition similar to the decompression sickness experienced by deep sea divers who return to the surface too quickly. it causes bran fatigue, headaches, numbness, joint pain, and trouble thinking clearly (brain fog). these symptoms were worst when he first left the fae realm, but they have lingered as a result of his damaged soul.
bran’s soul is splintered and missing parts. there is a shard of Fae soul lodged in one of the gaps left behind. this happened because multiple fae had a hold on bran when feld dragged him across the barrier between realms. bran’s human body rejects this shard, similar to transplant rejection in which someone’s immune system attacks a transplanted organ/tissue (specifically, like a heart transplant). this causes fevers, body aches, shortness of breath, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, low blood pressure, and other flu-like symptoms. simple tasks that used to be easy now tend to wear him out.
some days are easier than others. sometimes his symptoms flare seemingly at random, but they also flare in response to non-fae magic. this is why the magic-filled inn can feel suffocating at times and why bran often prefers escaping outside. he has adjusted to a constant low level of pressure from maude’s magic, but any additional magic (from guests, for example) tends to hurt him. he can no longer use magic himself without hurting more.
these symptoms will take a bigger and bigger toll on him over time, especially the high fevers that can last for days and barely respond to any medicine maude gives him. this means that bran’s life expectancy is… not great, without some miracle treatment.
then, on top of everything, there’s also the trauma from the incident. in addition to his soul being shattered, he was injured while leaving the fae realm, resulting in the scar on his neck and face. he has nightmares and trouble sleeping in general. he is hyper-vigilant, restless, and startles easily, which exhausts him even more. he is quieter, more withdrawn. he often acts mature for his age.
he dislikes talking about the incident and tries to avoid thinking about it, yet he cannot escape the memories of the fae realm that haunt his thoughts and appear in his dreams and sketches. part of him desperately wants to return to the fae realm because he believes it would hurt less, but he stifles this desire as much as possible because he knows how much maude and arthur sacrificed to save him. in general, he rarely admits how he’s truly feeling.
#|༄| headcanons#|✧| bran#(i just…. have many thoughts abt bran and chronic illness and aaaaaaa)#(it’s a rough time and a major part of his character)#(also i try my best to portray it well but please feel free to tell me if i can ever improve in any way)#(i always appreciate constructive criticism! <3 <3)

Amanda the adventurer post TV show Headcanons
here are some of me and my twins @thequasarwinds headcanons for Wooly and Amanda after they escape the TV show in our AUs. anyone is free to use these with credit!
(This isn’t really a HC just a thing in our AUs) Wooly and Amanda have altered appearances from their original bodies, Wooly is the most notable as he basically just looks like a Sheep furry, but Amanda has some slight changes too
Upon first ever leaving the TV show they have a short period of intense confusion, delirium and slight amnesia before everything starts to go back to them
they’re memories of before the TV show is incredibly vague and they both feel a level of disconnect from them. Almost as if they’re experiencing someone else’s memories.
^^ Because of this Amanda chooses to go by Amanda instead of Rebecca as she feels almost completely disconnected to the girl she once was. But she still would have bouts of completely hating the name Amanda due to its negative associations but feeling so disconnected from Rebecca it causes her to struggle a lot with depressive like symptoms and identity issues (though she canonically already has symptoms like that so I guess the preexisting symptoms grows worse)
^^ Wooly is similar except he has less memories of who he was so he doesn’t have any name to feel “disconnected” from. The name “Wooly” is simply what he’s use with and what he’s more comfortable with due to this fact.
^^ more AU specific)) Wooly barely has any memories before the show, actually, mostly just feelings. Due to this the show is sort of all he knows, especially regarding his identity
Wooly struggles a lot with personalization, he struggles with what he exactly likes, what his hobbies are and has a very poor sense of self.
Amanda (and most likely Wooly too but we just don’t have enough information on who he is and where he is in canon to say much yet) has pretty bad scaring due to her rotting. Most of it is around her hands feet and mouth area, leaving her walking with a limp and in need of assistance for long periods that she’s moving.
^^ because of this she at times has some kind of cane/ crutch for the long periods of walking/ running. It’s probably very personalized for her, with it being decorated in different kinds of stickers and painted in exiting colors.
Amanda has a slight level of aching and a form of chronic pain in her feet and hands, especially in the areas that were more rotted away
they both have a sensitivity to noises, bright lights, and tactile sensations due to how simplistic everything was in the TV show, the detail in the real world can make them overwhelmed and nauseous easily.
^^ Wooly gets a lot more overstimulated then Amanda however, due to the fact he was the most accepting of being in a TV show and his habit of being completely dissociated while in it causes him to be not use to a lot of sensory stimulation (though other factors could’ve caused this too), so he often can’t handle a lot of simple activities like going to a slightly busy restaurant.
Wooly struggles a lot with complex roadmaps and city maps as a whole and has a hard time remembering it all. He especially is not use to this level of complexity since his role of the side kick didn’t really allow him to build up those skills. He gets overwhelmed by the number of streets and is quick to get delirious by it, especially if he’s alone without Amanda or anyone to guide him. He’s use to there at the very least being a viewer who can help him out.
(This is also more of an AU thing and not a HC but people are free to use it as well, it’s useful for visual story telling and thematic purposes) Wooly has small little horns that is tied to his age as well as his emotions. Since he’s a child so therefore a lamb it’s only short little nubs that will grow gradually as he ages. But it’s also tied to his emotional well being and development as a independent person (he struggles with being his own person) if he goes through something particularly traumatic again they will grow but at the same time if he goes through something especially healing to him or happy they will also grow. (Amanda is kind of jealous of these horns since she finds them cool but she tries to convince herself its not and usually tries to keep it to herself. It’s hard for her though since Wooly is honestly stoked to have horns and keeps “rubbing it in” )
Amanda and Wooly are still trying to live a normal life, so they do (at least try to) go to school. But among a lot of other things they feel disconnected from their peers
Amanda especially feel’s disconnected and almost gets afraid to go to school, she’s afraid she’s going to hurt them, as the only time she really interacted with kids her age or kids any younger was in the TV show when she was forced to lure them away. She also feels simultaneously older yet younger then all of her class mates. She’s also an emotional unregulated child, so she’s afraid she’s going to have outbursts and hurt them.
Wooly on the other hand tries as hard as he can to integrate into normal society but it hasn’t been easy for him. (Besides the obvious of him literally being a sheep) It’s hard for him to connect with a lot of his classmates due to a multitude of factors, but he still desperately tries as hard as he can to act like he’s just a completely normal kid. He almost wants to forget all about the TV show in favor of something more normal.
Wooly is a teachers pet and is completely terrified of breaking a lot of the rules. He’s also the kind of person to remind the teacher about tonight’s homework, but not to be annoying he genuinely believes in the usefulness of homework and “educational prowess” it’s also a rule and he’s afraid of any of his teachers getting fired if he doesn’t.
Amanda is the most mischievous yet also the most generally educated compared to the rest of her classmates. Her teachers often don’t know what to do with her, so they often opt for her to try and teach the kids around her table when they have an assignment she already knows. Amanda likes feeling like “the smartest” but she also absolutely hates having to teach her class mates as it makes her fears even worse. She complies however since she is at heart just a helpful sweet little girl.
Wooly and Amanda don’t like eating meat and has a hard time eating it if they have to. The association with the Meatman and what the meats were is too much for them. Wooly acts more openly squeamish and nauseous while Amanda acts more scared and repulsive.
there’s probably a whole lot more Headcanons that I missed but that’s what I remember! I’ll probably update this as time goes! Hope you all liked them! I… uh- wasn’t expecting a lot of them to be so sad? I’m sorry about that ^^,

So no pressure at all not to answer if you don’t want to. Just if you do know…
*could* House still have his leg amputated? Would it help?
Initial disclaimer: I am not a doctor and I don't claim to be, any misconceptions are my own!
So we know that amputation was originally on the table in 1999/2000 when House initially had his infarction and then brought back into the limelight in 2011 when he committed bathtub butchery. But outside of those two acute incidents, could he have an amputation in the interim?
It's sort of a multipronged question because amputations, particularly above knee amputations (AKA) are pretty involved, risky surgeries. There's a lot of significant vasculature in the thigh that can be difficult to control. The femur in the thigh is the strongest bone in the human body, breaking a healthy adult femur is the equivalent of cracking concrete. Contrary to what House says when he claims surgeons are going to err on the side of "caution" and take his leg to protect themselves from complications, there are a lot of risks involved in taking a ~70 lb limb from the body. Patients after an AKA are 4x more likely to suffer a cardiac event. It's not just about preserving function if at all possible (though that is a concern). AKA is lower risk than, say, allowing a necrotic muscle to continue to rot inside the body, but if a healthy person with a mobility device walks into a surgeon's office and says, "I would like to have my leg amputated because of chronic pain," many surgeons are resoundingly going to say no.
That is especially complicated by House having had an infarction, a blood clot. Muscular infarctions are rare and almost exclusively happen in diabetics, so for House to have had one as a nondiabetic man in his late 30s/early 40s, he probably has something unusual going on in his blood to cause atypical clotting factors. He should be taking bloodthinners to prevent another infarction from occurring. By definition, that makes him a higher risk patient for any surgeon--he comes off the bloodthinners for surgery, putting him at risk for another infarction, or he doesn't and he's now at risk for hemorrhage.
Add to the equation that House is American in the world run by insurance--no insurance company is going to approve an amputation in a guy who's walking with a cane. Some would probably try to slide it by as a cosmetic/elective surgery to escape any financial responsibility, so he'd be looking at around $50,000 out the gate for surgery alone.
But the question will it help? is one that... really can't be answered. Again, contrary to what the canon displays, phantom limb pain is seldom easily fixed and can become chronic, plus the physiology is extremely poorly understood, so it's much more difficult to treat than standard acute or chronic pain. There's a pretty good chance that, with time and healing after amputation, House would have a fairly normal, pain-free existence, given he'll always be disabled and he'll face the struggles of using a prosthetic/walker/crutches/whatever mobility aid he chooses. There's also a chance that he could continue to live in chronic pain, now less treatable, while healing a surgical incision and learning how to walk again. It could fall either way. (And potential complications, ie a second infarction, cardiac event, no limitations, there's a lot to work with.)
All of that said--this is just in terms of my experience and limited knowledge. I think amputee!House is something that should be explored more often in fandom, from all sides of the equation (1999, 2011, favorable outcomes, unfavorable outcomes). It's worth mentioning that within the scope of the House MD universe, House does believe that he would be a happier person in less pain if he had had his leg amputated.
In terms of fanworks, anything goes! (I mean I literally wrote a soliloquy on how/why Wilson's cancer is considered terminal while simultaneously writing my WilsonLives!AU, so it's safe to say we should all be comfortable hurling realism in the toilet for the sake of Fix It FanFiction.) There are no rules, medicine as we know it doesn't exist, you can do Whatever You Want for the sake of the narrative.

Sorry if this comes off wrong, really not my intention
But you zombie au makes me think a bit of warm bodies. Mooostly your bit talking about how the infected are still aware enough to want to crave connection with each other.
Cause that's kinda what warm bodies is about. It's more a romance story but the overall theme is basically using the trope of zombies and infected to represent disconnection. From yourself, society, the people you care about. (More or less)
And that kinda stuff always hits me a lot when people use the zombies trope like that or include bits of that in their stories especially as someone who frankly struggles so much with it. Namely dissociation and chronic pain.
So when you mentioned in your au that people are still aware and seek out some sort of connection in some way im just very big teary eyed over it especially over the fact that like. Idk. The whole. You are suffering. You are in pain. You are so scared. You just want someone to care about you.
Idk it's got me thinking about that whole thing again and augh. Personally one of my favorite tropes.
HEEHEE I'm glad you like that aspect!!
I decided to make the infection work like that when I was thinking about curly's own infection and how it'd work for the narrative. I didn't really like the idea of him completely losing his humanity and there being a chance of him snapping and attacking the crew or whatever, mostly because of how he's treated in-game after the crash? He gets dehumanized, most notably by jimmy, treating him as either a sobbing inconvenience or a symbol, and his appearance haunts him. He is treated, in some ways, as a kind of monster, when he is just.... a severely injured and disabled man. And he doesn't have agency and can't make any choices for himself.
While zombie!curly isn't in quite as severe a state, the gang does still treat him to some degree as not entirely human. He's treated as a ticking time bomb of cannibalistic wrath, and a harbinger of rotting doom should anyone get too close unprotected. But he still has more agency than canon curly does, at least. For a while he can still speak, and emote through facial expressions, and he still has some use of his hands and feet, even if he is weakened. He's in agony, sure, but it's not quite "complete immobility" levels. He has some options. I didn't want to take away what agency he does have by letting there be an actual chance of him turning into a monster later on, fulfilling the fears the rest of the crew have about him.
Also something something "our worst moments don't make us monsters" something "when does it make me monstrous" (<- magnus archives reference) curly's darker decisions later in the au's story are his own and not dictated by a zombie infection, just his own anger and pain.
And after deciding on that aspect of the story, the rest of the zombies' behavior stuff came p naturally!
Tldr: it didn't feel right to make a character who already lacks so much agency in a story about what makes a monster Lose their agency in a way that makes them inherently monstrous in this au, and that led the way for the more.... sympathetic I guess? zombie behavior!
#fg's answers#asks#mw zombie au#hope all that made sense#also dw about comparing my au to various zombie media!! a) theres bound to be similarities regardless#and b) i threw in some more direct references on purpose here and there!! ill probably show more of em as i make more art

Alright I’ve thought about it a bit, let’s rant about just how horrifying the curse Simon was afflicted with would be! Consider this like a part one of sorts for Simon’s Quest analysis stuff cause I could talk about this one game for hours on end—
I’m gonna put a cut here because warning ⚠️ descriptions of decay, gorey stuff, disease, and some pretty bad mental effects. Stay safe guys, don’t read further if you can’t handle those topics!
I’ve seen multiple different descriptions of it from different media and manuals, but, just from this little line alone, this is already a pretty awful fate for the guy. High emphasis on the word decay. That in itself can imply a lot of different things, sometimes all at once. And keep in mind too, he’s had this over the course of 7 years. Simon is probably already an absolute wreck from this wayyyyy before the game even starts.
First of all, getting hit on the back is a bad spot for any kind of infection or spreading disease (closest irl counterpart). That’s awfully close to a lot of vital things you don’t want something spreading to including the spine, lungs, heart, etc etc. Especially for deeper cuts because we’re talking Dracula level injury here, not like a paper cut or something. Hell, too deep of a hit on the back might cause some nerve damage, not to the extent of paralysis in his case, but general chronic pain from a wound that won’t heal properly is uhhh… not great. :( I’ve also seen some media say that the curse causes wounds to not heal, bleeding, the American manual even mentions it effecting the soul, awful stuff. I generally like to think “Bloody Tears” is referring to Simon tbh.
Another thing, with afflictions that cause decay generally the smaller appendages start getting hit hard with it first. It’s the same way for a lot of other conditions; fingers, toes, earlobes, anything protruding like that because the body considers them lowest priority in a survival situation like that and it wouldn’t kill you to lose them. Necrosis especially has things start turning ruddy colors, blacken, and start forming holes in the layers of skin (@ @ ;). Obviously this alone is excruciating. Poor dude has to walk for days on end like that…
And slowly deteriorating could also imply some form of wasting. Fats usually go first, then muscle, which is also very not good when you’ve gotta beat the clock to survive. Scary thing is that the brain is like 60% fats and not immune to any of this whoops—
Something I don’t really see anyone consider very often when talking about the curse (not that I’ve seen many people talk about this 💀) is how absolutely mentally fucked up Simon would be from it. Just the terror of knowing you’re slowly rotting to death would be enough to drive most people into some kind of despair or panic, but seeing and feeling all the gruesome details of it is even worse. Being in constant pain and stress isn’t good for anyone, especially someone who is already weakened from illness. But the sheer mental deterioration this guy would be having from the decay itself oh my god (0_o ). Looking up widespread brain shrinkage like that and uh some of the early signs are already stuff like seizures and extreme headaches. Add the fact that he doesn’t really sleep much for upwards of 7 days and it’d be an absolute miracle if this guy wasn’t hallucinating and/or completely hysterical by this point among other things. I mean, no wonder so much of this game is running around lost and confused, not only are people lying to his face, Simon is probably just barely keeping his shit together the whole time.

Impulse is a bad back haver
Cleos joints are wack due to rotting but her pain and capabilities is on a moving scale so she has a collection of different mobility aids she uses at different times and for different activities
Skizz is an amputee and of course bad shoulder from past injury
Wels has a bad knee
Grian's got arthritis, and it's especially bad in his wrists/hands, and so a lot of times more fine motor skills cause pain for the rest of the day or he's incapable of doing them
Oooo? Tbh I love these cus 👀👀👀
Impulse with a bad back is mood tho cus ours doesn't work well either <3 (we have horrible posture 😔)
Also additions from us cus we think about giving them disabilities sometimes:
Bdubs with chronic pain and partial blindness from the LL wither. His (mostly) uninjured eye also has a heavy lid due to nerve damage.
Impulse has somewhat bad knees and a toe with a wiggly/weak joint. Basically just a form of hypermobility. Nearly forgot to mention him being an amputee, he's down one arm <3
Ren has a slipped rib that just refuses to fully heal, he's got a permanent wiggly rib. (Also probably has hypermobility, we still haven't decided).

What Causes Bad Breath
Bad breath may be the sign of a medical disorder, such as a local infection in the respiratory tract, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic learn more bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbance, liver or kidney ailment.
Bad breath, also known as halitosis. Bad Breath is usually caused by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. Certain foods, such as garlic and onions, contribute to objectionable breath odor. Bad breath can also be caused by dry mouth (xerostomia), which occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Saliva is necessary to cleanse the mouth and remove particles that may cause odor. Dry mouth may be caused by various medications, salivary gland problems or continuously breathing through the mouth. In many people, the millions of bacteria that live in the mouth (particularly on the back of the tongue) are the primary causes of bad breath. The mouth's warm, moist conditions make an ideal environment for these bacteria to grow. Most bad breath is caused by something in the mouth. Particles of food remain in the mouth, collecting bacteria, which can cause bad breath. Canker sores may be related to bad breath, especially if they accompany periodontal disease.
Food that collects between the teeth, on the tongue and around the gums can rot, leaving an unpleasant odor. Poor oral hygiene leads to bad breath because when you leave food particles in your mouth, these pieces of food can rot and start to smell. Tobacco products cause bad breath. Bad breath is usually caused by the bacteria that live in a person's mouth. Severe dieting-Dieters may develop unpleasant "fruity" breath from ketoacidosis, the breakdown of chemicals during fasting. Bad breath is also associated with sinus infections because nasal discharge from your sinuses into the back of your throat can cause mouth odor.
Strep throat, tonsillitis and mononucleosis can cause bad breath until the throat infection clears. A person may not always know that he or she has bad breath. This phenomenon is because odor-detecting cells in the nose eventually become accustomed to the constant flow of bad smells from the mouth. Dry mouth — Difficulty swallowing dry foods, difficulty speaking for a prolonged period because of mouth dryness, a burning sensation in the mouth, an unusually high number of dental caries, dry eyes. Infections in the mouth — Gums may be red, swollen and bleed easily, especially after brushing or flossing; pus may drain from between teeth; a pocket of pus at the base of a tooth; loose teeth or a change in "fit" of a denture; painful, open sores on the tongue or gums. Systemic (bodywide) illnesses — Symptoms of diabetes, lung disease, kidney failure or liver disease.

Ranting, Sorry.
I'm reading this book called A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. It's an excellent read, I recommend it so far. Very human and very personal and very intimate—just great all around.
It centers around this character named Jude and his relationships with several friends in his circle. How he perceives being a disabled adult, while also becoming very successful in the field of law, the ins and outs of sexual trauma. It's deep, it explores it all.
The thing I'm choosing to focus on right now, however, is him and his thought on being a disabled person. For reference, he was in an accident—it scarred his back, his body developed chronic pain, and he's reliant on walking aides for his mobility. One of his largest fears in the book is that his friends, his colleagues, the acquaintances that wade in and out of his life, they will see him as less of Jude and being a person; but rather define him wholly by his disability. That they'll use it to mock him, to force him to be less than and degenerate under their feet, that it'll come back to bite him in the ass. He worries that he's perceived as just the way he walks or talks or moves. That he is less human and more the thing that separates him—does this all make sense?
Anyway. I am someone who has chronic migraines and chronic pain. His fears are my fears, even if mine are lesser and more invisible. (Solely because there is nothing visible on me to highlight me as disabled, but it's still there. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.) And I have people in my family who are disabled, who I've been advocating for since I was younger.
But this makes me more aware of how people interact with or talk about disabled people online.
Here's an example:
Some twenty minutes ago, give or take, I was scrolling on TikTok. (Which, in itself is a hellscape and has rotted my brain like the spread of mold.) But somebody on there is posting clips from Michael J. Fox's documentary, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (which you can watch on Apple TV+).
And in these clips, Michael J. Fox talks very openly, while also recalling solemnly, the diagnosis for Parkinson's Disease. His complete and utter shock. The way it was described to him as being degenerative, incurable, etc. Even the slight horror in the realization that he's young at the time of this diagnosis, that it will affect his acting career, things along these lines.
Which, to take a quick sideline here, Parkinson's is a pretty devastating disease. It's a disease in the brain that causes the breaking down of a person's nervous system. Which affects how a person may move—things like tremors, stiffness, loss of balance as some of the first signs. And again, it's incurable. It's something that just unfolds as a person ages. It doesn't go away. There's no way to extinguish it, does that make sense? The best way to soothe the symptoms is by taking medications, but these medicines do not eradicate the disease.
Okay, now that I've explained a little bit.
I was just baffled, completely and utterly baffled by what people were saying in the comments of these clips. Things like "It's so hard to watch," and "It's been hard to see him go through this for decades," and the list goes on. But those being the two that truly, honestly, angered me to my core.
This is what A Little Life was talking about. When a person opens up about their disability, they are hoping for support, for enthusiastic and positive questions: How can I help? Is there anything that I can do that would better support you? And especially comments like, This does not change how I view you. And you are the same person to me.
Because that's what it should be! You shouldn't see a disabled person and want to look away because it's hard on you to see. How absolutely diabolical to hear. Take off the skin of being uncomfortable for a moment, a second. I want you—if you've made a comment like any of the negative ones that I've seen or you've witnessed these comments with your own eyes—to imagine what it's like for the disabled person in some ways.
The person may be used to their disability, but that doesn't mean that all insecurities are immediately out of the question. Maybe they're hidden, maybe they're skin deep, maybe they're so far inside of them that it takes the absolute most to pull offense from them.
But disabled people, myself included, want to be viewed as just a person. Like anybody else. That's it. Watering disabled people down to just their disability, or how their disability makes you uncomfortable—that's an awful thing to do, it's an ableist way of seeing the world.
Have more respect and dignity. And keep the uncomfortable to yourself. We deserve the same space and existence as you do. No matter celebrity status, career level, gender, sexuality, or otherwise.
Making comments on how difficult it is to see a disabled person experience their disability, that is a horrid thing to do. And I hope every single person realizes that.

HELL YEAH alright
gonna divide this up by his various lives bc otherwise it's a Mess <3
some warnings ahead for descriptions of intense wounds, necrosis, body decay, and general infection. be careful pls
Prior to first death
rly likes robotics work and engineering so he has made his own little robots and such in the past
designed his own headset bc he is hard of hearing, wanted something to help him be able to discern noises better and also adjust volume bc Overstimulation
got a major injury to his right hand that ended up severing tendons and causing injuries that were not heal-able so he had to get it amputated. decided to work on a robotic hand to replace it and eventually finished it (he was right handed so it was a bit of a struggle)
First death
got his heart punctured in battle and it was basically useless. ponk gave him what was essentially a pacemaker and jack later adjusted this with more. robotic things (very technical wording I know /s)
basically had a large plate of metal over the left side of his chest leading to the robotic heart
u can kinda see the mechanism from outside. not super well, but he did use some glass that makes seeing it a little clearer
Second death
very badly burned his legs and left side of his body especially
ended up with a major infection in both legs and his left arm
needed to amputate his left foot and needed a permanent brace for his right
left shoulder to his hand was entirely burnt down practically to bone, also needed that amputated
decided to build off of the mechanism on his chest and made a fully robotic left arm connecting to a shoulder socket he'd also made
made a pretty basic foot prosthetic that was also robotic but not very. his left leg is now surrounded by wire/metal supports that move his leg bc it can't move well on its own
his left eye was burned out in the lava, so he built more onto his headset. made a visor to help him visualize things better and fix his depth perception w only one eye
the 3D glasses design was a bit of a dark joke on the fact that he doesn't have the depth to use 3D glasses
also fixed his headset to be able to adjust volumes better. would've done it ages ago but he just never found the time until the need was forced upon him
Third death & revival
most of him is metal/robotics by now and that's what he looks like headed into the doomsday battle
but techno blade kills him by basically shattering his skull with his sword, killing him and sending him to hell :]
literally clawed his way out of hell out of pure spite
when he made it back, he was very faded and his body was Not stable enough for him to last long
so he spent all of the time he had immunity (y'know like when u log in and ur safe from attacks for a few seconds? he had that for a few hours bc it's an Exceptional Case) trying to. fix himself
basically, he had healed somewhat from respawning but respawning doesn't fix ur issues (as jack has learned in the past) and so his skull still has a massive hole in it
so he spends several hours trying to fix up his own head with various parts and pieces until he's not on the verge of immediately dying again
this is also, despite immunity, Very fucking Painful
but he manages to Somehow make himself stable enough to live
and no one else realizes he's died, they just think he got injured and once again fixed himself back up the only way he knows how
Post-revival
everything is going relatively smoothly. he now has massive chronic migraines but that makes sense. he did have a good amount of trauma to his skull and it's not exactly. healed in a way that is "correct"
but he starts to notice some strange things
his skin is darkening in places, turning unnatural colors that really don't seem pleasant. he's starting to constantly smell rot, like there's something dead following him around. his his skin is getting uncomfortably loose almost and he's not sure what's happening
until it starts to actively slough off
and then he realizes the rotting, dead smell is him. the unnatural color of his skin is necrosis. and his skin, muscle, even bones are starting to necrose
and he is (reasonably) terrified. why isn't this killing him? how is he alive?? how in the fuck can he stop himself from literally decomposing?????
and he sticks to the same solutions he always has. he starts building
and every time he seems to have made a solution for one thing, another part of him fails. he makes a better stomach (or rather "energy core" bc who needs food anymore?) and right when he finishes that, his liver fails. he supports his spine as the nerve endings start to decay, but right as that project comes to a close, his shoulder dislocates from it's socket. etc etc etc
his current big project is basically making a hard drive to replace his brain because ooh boy it's going fast and he's not sure how well it'll work but he's gotta try
so we get to current day jack, an emotional wreck because he's always left behind and a physical wreck because he is literally falling apart as the days go by.
#i woke up this morning and was like how can i fuck up c!jack manifold and this was the solution </3#but yeah! hes literally falling apart and that is very Distressing so hes going through some shit man#this is a result of me being conflicted on jack being a robot initially or not and this is what i decided on :]#this way he can br fully human and fully robot. much more internal conflict#anyway im gonna make a tier list of the stinkiest dsmp characters and jack will be at the top#dumbass thots#dsmp tag#jack manifol??#infection tw#decay tw#ask to tag

The main bulk of my suffering is directly related to the manufactured "opiate crisis" that has caused untold pain and suffering for so many millions of people for so many, many years. In this essay, I intend to place my experiences in their proper context, as one of a sharply growing series of victims of medical malpractice stemming from the fundamental shift in our society from seeing pain patients as people to be treated, to deriding them as addicts to be suspicious of.
Though it says volumes about our society that we see addicts as fundamentally 'bad' people who deserve homelessness and death instead of as human beings, often times human beings who are suffering greatly and turn to the only thing that makes life even mildly bearable. But that's neither here nor there. (For more information about addiction, see https://tinyurl.com/rat-park )
Our story begins in 1996, when Purdue Pharma (Stamford, CT, USA) released OxyContin, a sustained release oxycodone preparation that is also sold here in the UK. In the US, where such things are legal, it was aggressively marketed and promoted as less dangerous and less addictive than other opiate preparations. (Source & more information about OxyContin's marketing: https://tinyurl.com/oxymarket )
Anyone who thinks a $200 million a year marketing campaign would not spill over to the UK is more than merely obtuse, but likely willfully ignorant. The entire 'opiate epidemic' is an American import, and it started there: with an unscrupulous American company that would stop at nothing to make money.
Lulled into a false sense of security by Purdue's claims of minimal risk of addiction, doctors began prescribing OxyContin much more liberally and for much more than they originally would have. This increased availability set many people up for addiction and overdose deaths.
To most people, that is the bulk of what the 'opiate crisis' is. But there is a secondary crisis unfolding quietly behind closed doors. In the USA, there are "Don't Punish Pain" rallies that at least try to draw attention to the situation ( https://dontpunishpainrally.com ), but here in the UK we are entirely forgotten and buried under the British 'stiff upper lip' mentality. It is completely hushed up, no one talks about the fact that the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction. (For example: https://tinyurl.com/opiate-pendulum )
The government and/or the NHS have enforced involuntarily tapering of chronic pain patients' medication. Medication we need in order to not spend our lives screaming in agony. The pain management clinic has already warned me that it is, direct quote, "when, not if" I will find my own medication terminated, ready or not.
But there will be no 'ready'. Chronic pain does not get better with time. Chronic pain does not go into remission. If you know someone with chronic pain who appears to be 'getting better', I can promise you it is merely that the sufferer has learned to better conceal it. It's a saying in the chronic pain community, "We don't fake being ill. We fake being well."
We have learned that the average person only has about two weeks of compassion in them, after that you're treated as a freak for not getting better already, or outright accused of malingering. After all, with all of modern science, can't you just go to the doctor and get a pill and be done with it? Our concept of illness is either 'you go to the hospital, get treated, and come out okay' or 'you go to the hospital, waste away, and die'. Chronic pain patients, who never get better, but aren't actively dying, don't fit in to our society's 'concept' of illness.
People who offer to help us out for the social brownie points of helping the poor cripple soon discover that we're not going to die, we're going to continue to need help for the forseeable future. Rather than gracefully admitting that they don't have the ability to help us in perpetuity (which would be perfectly understandable!), most people choose to lash out at us, we must be abusing their kindness, they helped so we must surely be better by now. Compassion fatigue seems to hit every single human being that interacts with us, as if merely existing while disabled is wearing on their ability to remain civil. (Compassion fatigue: https://tinyurl.com/2-week-fatigue )
Doctors have even less compassion than that. In the backlash of the 'crisis', they have begun to treat anyone who complains of pain, unilaterally, as a drug seeker. And those of us already in treatment? Are addicts in need of rehab. (More examples: https://tinyurl.com/drs-no-compassion )
Despite study after study (Studies: https://tinyurl.com/no-taper ) showing that tapering chronic pain patients unequivocally causes severe harm, up to and including death, the pain management team said to my face that I am, direct quote, "addicted to heroin" and "no different from my four year old grandson, demanding a choccy biscuit because he doesn't know they'll rot his teeth. And I have to smack him and tell him NO! And I'll smack you, too, if it'll get you off those drugs!" (Somehow my complaint that a doctor had literally smacked his hands in front of my face to demonstrate that he was sincere in his threat to physically assault me.... mysteriously got lost.)
I have been denied treatment for other (non-opiate) methods of reducing my pain because, direct quote, "it doesn't matter as long as you're on those drugs, opiates actually make you more sensitive to pain in the long run, so there's no sense trying anything else if you won't get clean." They talk to me like taking my medication responsibly, as prescribed, is the same as shooting up black tar. All in the hopes of bullying or shaming me into "voluntarily" tapering.
Honestly just living under these conditions alone would be enough to snap my mental health in half, but you have to remember that I'm not only facing all of this systemic bullying and professional misconduct while also living with pain that has often been compared to late stage cancer and chemotherapy ( https://tinyurl.com/fibro-chemo ), as well as debilitating fatigue, and a shroud of fog hanging around my brain and clouding my memories and judgments (and at times, my ability to speak English). Everyone's first reaction is "did you report them? you should report them. why didn't you report them!" as if I'm too stupid to have thought of that myself. But I don't have the energy for the lengthy bureaucratic nightmare that is dealing with the NHS's administration, especially not when I could have my entire life destroyed by a doctor's bruised ego penning into my file "patient was uncooperative and combative, suspect drug abuse".
It's only a matter of time before I choose suicide over another sleepless night of laying in bed and praying for death. And when that time comes, I hope that my name is added to the long, bloodstained list of people who have killed themselves not out of any sort of depression, but because their entire existence is built on pain and suffering and enough becomes enough for the last time. Drop my body on the steps of the CDC, which is the main driving force behind the opiate witch hunt. Maybe death will at least bring me some measure of peace.

ITS MY BLOG AND I GET TO INFODUMP ABOUT MY CHARACTERS >:D
Disability and gender experience
CW for ptsd, panic attacks, su*c*de [I will talk about at the end if you still want to read this and will add another warning] , gender dysphoria, mild transpobia and abelism both internal and external
Disability
Lyla has osteoarthritis that is due to Burns' pretty fucky genes. She found this out when one evening they literally couldn't get out of bed for anything due to intense pain in the knees. Waylon had to come and get them and when he got there Lyla was pretty much on the brink of tears. Lyla then got a diagnosis. At first she was frustrated because it changed everything about his daily life. He was prescribed pain medication that dulls the pain to a manageable degree and was recommended to use a cane to get around during mild flare ups. It initially upset her. He thought she was too young to be going through something like that and hated having to limit how much they work. They later realized that stigma was ableist and bullshit and eventually sucked it up and decided to just embrace his new way of life and let her Grandfather help him learn how to cope due to experience with chronic pain [which means its lifelong] . On some days they get around just fine with pain meds but on bad flare up days they have to use a cane or chair to get around. She eventually mastered working with the aids and can even pop a sick wheelie on his chair. The pain still gets to them and it really sucks but he does swallow his pride and allow themselves to rest and be supported by others.
Sometimes with her partner Ashley he'll get snuggled and taken care of by her. Lyla is pretty dang light like his grandfather and Ashley has no problem carrying him around. Lyla secretly loves being carried. He's pretty fucking privileged to have Mr.Burns allow her disability support. Lyla is very privileged. Sometimes they like to make his cane/chair look cool with spray paint and whatnot. Very cripplepunk. Lyla probably found a disabled community of people his age to help her feel less alone.
Abbey has undiagnosed innatentive type adhd and ptsd that she gets full on panic attacks from. Neurodiversity was something taboo and not talked about in her childhood and didn't even realize she was struggling more than she should be. As a child she struggled paying attention to long boring sermons/lectures and was shamed alot for it. She didn't understand how she occasionally made people uncomfortable with very weird and unconventional topics she talks about. Loud sudden stimuli and intense buzzing overwhelms her and can make her cry. She didn't do very well in school and barely graduated high school. She prefered watching her favorite movies and playing dolls with her sister over studying. She's extremely sensitive to fabric and only has certain types of blankets and clothes that she can stand. She absolutely hates the feeling of fabric draping against her legs too much so sometimes she either wears tight-ish pants and avoids skirts/dresses. She hates sitting and walking in dresses. She never wanted to wear them lol they feel bad to her. She refuses to sit up straight and will cross her legs. Abbey hyperfixates on animation, cinema, and dollhouses. She likes binging movies and making doll projects. She tends to bond with people through movies and model making. She struggled to make friends outside of her circle and just stayed friends with people she grew up with at her church. They all escaped that mormon hell. Abbey struggles with her emotions and usually gets overwhelmed too much which can often leave her drained and tired. She has an intense oral fixation and uses stim necklaces to chew on, before she would chew on her sleeves, pen caps, pens, her hair, her shirt, her sleeves, bottle caps, ect. She was a very curious kid and tried to eat playdough, dirt and grass lol. None of them where good. She is decent at working at the video store and feels happy with her job being related to her interests. Because hrt therapy is so expensive she doesn't feel she can afford any kind of therapy or medication and it's very overwhelming for her to have to prioritize one aspect of her health over another. But with financial support from close friends and her boyfriend Tim she gets by ok.
Gender
Lyla assumed that it was completely normal to have a fuzzy fluid gender due to believing gender is a lose concept for most people. He didn't realize most people have static genders that don't change at all. It wasn't something they never questioned. Later in Lyla's 20s they started to learn more on gender and realized she wasn't as cis as he thought they where. The term genderfluid fit his experiences perfectly. They never felt still in their gender. Even if they felt more towards one gender over another it wasn't a firm feeling. It felt fluid and lose. As a teen they dressed in goth fashion and was a self proclaimed tomboy. But they realized tomboys or most gnc women didn't dress up very feminine on somedays or even wear dresses. She loves wearing dresses and she loves wearing lose jeans and a lose men's tee.
Lyla's gender tends to shift weekly but it may present or change depending on who they're with or what media/environment they're exposed too. For example he might feel more feminine with certain friends and more masculine with strangers. Sometimes they feel more comfortable being agender or a nonbinary genders with certain people such as their partner. Sometimes they only use certain pronouns with certain people. He/she/they at work, she/he with parents, she/he/they/it with siblings, she/he with some friends, and she/he/moths/rots, rats, its with their partner. Lyla will either tell people upfront on pronouns for the week or use a pin.
Most of the time clothes don't dictate their gender that week but there are some key differences. Lyla will not wear dresses on more masculine days and may draw on facial hair with a mascara brush. On more feminine days they dress more like a nature witch and loves floral stuff. They are more likely to have fun with makeup on those days.
Lyla doesn't want to undergo any kind of surgery or hormone therapy. Lyla may bind a bit with a sports bra but doesn't really feel uncomfortable with his chest and mostly doesn't mind having visibile tits on masc days.
Abbey always felt different from her birth sex and felt very frustrated learning she wouldn't just naturally grow into the chest and genitals she wants growing up. It was an extremely taboo and forbidden subject but despite that something inside her soul knew she was a girl. Her parents pushed very strict gender roles on her growing up and causes her to struggle with her femininity as an infertile woman who could not stand dresses. It made her feel a bit lost but she later felt better knowing other women cis and trans who don't conform to gender roles.
Abbey gets intense physical dysphoria from her crotch and for a long time she had to just deal with it until surgery was an option. Some days she could tolerate it but some days [especially when she got on estrogen and felt very hormonal] it was unbearable and a wet dream or boner would trigger a depressive episode that consists of cacooning a cover, watching her favorite movies and long naps. It was a toll on her mental health that was already pretty bad. But emotional support, understanding and patience from her friends and boyfriend helped her carry on though it. She eventually does get bottom surgery and it's a HUGE weight off her chest.
Abbey usually dresses in sweatshirts, graphic tees and cute jeans. Whatever's comfortable on the skin. She wore tank tops more when her tits grew in. And they grew in pretty dang fast and big and ah it hurt. She's a c cup which she loves but God they where tender for awhile. Double puberty isn't fun. Her transition was a bit rough and long being low middle class but she pulled through.
TW for su*cide. Leave the post now if this triggers you.
Abbey is a suicide attempt survivor. She suffers ptsd from her own husband taking his life leaving her a widow. She felt trapped and tired in her unbalanced emotions and uncertainty of ever feeling okay or getting the medical attention she needed and attempted to OD. Fortunately she was with Timothy who immediately called an ambulance. She was very tired and at first a bit disappointed she was still alive but also a bit relieved. She then had to cope with feeling suicidal.

ohh god the brain muscles go brrrr here’s 50 headcanons @bnharpchub / u got me to do this so u get tagged too :knife: @symbol-of-terror
1. daiten knows japanese and english, and knows some russian. however, learning too many languages can be confusing due to the language she was taught as a child ------- a mix of multiple languages meant to create a language barrier between the people in a cult and regular denizens.
2. while daiten doesn’t know much of anything else regarding biology, daiten was taught some and still studies cardiovascular and the muscular system, as well as knowing an equivalent of what a training EMT would know.
3. daiten usually pulls one or two fingers back towards her palm when she holds something, but she stopped this when she chose to hide her quirk and switched to only controlling her quirk through her quirk. because of this, her hands are pretty cold the majority of the time.
4. something alike to the last regarding to control, daitens main support items are a bandage like material that goes over areas with arteries ( not all of them, just a few ) to ensure that no one dies if a civilian panics and grabs her. the material doesn’t constrict her movements.
5. daiten eats alot and tends to eat healthily. she takes vitamins and quirk nullification drugs even, because her quirk often doesn’t allow her body to absorb nutrience properly.
6. she’s been taken care of by her foster father since she was ten years old. she doesn’t call him dad often and calls him by his name or his nickname.
7. daiten has a hard time getting close to people and tended to avoid it.
8. she likes the smell of gingerbread and honey.
9. daiten prefers more dull colors like greys, browns and blacks. bright colors tend to make her eyes hurt.
10. daiten excels at science and hero studies but is terrible at math and home ec.

17. daitens quirk causes alot of chronic pain that’s hard to deal with sometimes.
18. she was in the house when tenko destroyed it. she avoided being crushed by the rubble because of the crib she was in but she had a open triangle shaped scar on her side that’s mostly faded.
19. daiten has a quirkless cousin from her mothers side that she has no idea about. he’s nine !
20. daiten was close to a year old when the shimura incident happened.
21. she had a tendency to call tenko koko when she was younger. the nickname was one of her first babbled words
22. daiten has c-ptsd.
23. daitens blood isn’t the only thing that’s destructive. every single cell in her body is destructive in some way.
24. her room is extremely clean to the point where it doesn’t look like anyone other than a quiet guest stays there.

Seriously, is playing Video Games as BAD as mom says?
If you grew up playing video games like I did … you’ve probably heard lots of conflicting information about games from your parents and people. Some say too much gaming will ruin your vision or rot your brain … While others claim it improves your hand-eye coordination, response time and can even make you smarter so what exactly does gaming do to our brain and body?
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with video games.
I would stay awake for more than 48h till I wake up with keyboard marks on my face, red eyes and my body is so tired to even get up and drink some water... trust me I am not exaggerating. After all that I would go to sleep only to dream about the perfect headshot with that “AWM”.
But there were physical effects, too. My thumbs turned into machines, quick and precise. During especially difficult levels of play, my palms would sweat. My heart would race. I’d have knots in my stomach from anxiety. It was the same feeling I’d sometimes get from watching scary movies or suspenseful TV shows.
These days the gaming industry is booming and becoming more like sports with fans, medals and everything! and thanks to smartphones and free games like fortnight and League of Legends … Gamers are increasing more than ever before. So, given that we can play virtually anywhere at any time How is all this gaming changing us physically?
Scientists are discovering that playing video games can change the way we act, think, and feel. Whether these changes are good or bad has become a subject of intense debate.
Action games like counter-strike, overwatch and PUBG are some of the most popular with gamers these days and probably you’ve heard once or twice your grandmother says “these games will make you more violent from all the blood you see!”
Whenever a wave of teenage violence strikes, movies, TV, or video games often take the heat. Some adults assume that movies, TV, and video games are a bad influence on kids, and they blame these media for causing various problems.
But media don’t necessarily cause violence, says James Gee. Gee is an education professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
“You get a group of teenage boys who shoot up a school—of course they’ve played video games,” Gee says. “Everyone does. It’s like blaming food because we have obese people.”
Video games are innocent of most of the charges against them, Gee says…
Well, based on 15 years’ worth of study researchers have found that action games biggest positive effects were on perception: how our senses interpret external stimuli like sights and sounds, spatial cognition: which helps you orient yourself in navigating 3d environments and top-down attention: the ability to focus on one object while ignoring distractions.
A good video game is challenging, entertaining, and complicated. It usually takes 50 to 60 hours of intense concentration to finish one. Even kids who can’t sit still in school can spend hours trying to solve a video or computer game.
“Kids diagnosed with ADHD because they can’t pay attention will play games for 9 straight hours on the computer”, Gee says. “The game focuses attention in a way that school doesn’t.”
The captivating power of video games might lie in their interactive nature. Players don’t just sit and watch. They get to participate in the action and solve problems. Some games even allow players to make changes in the game, allowing new possibilities.
Different games have different impacts on the brain and that has to do with what you’re asked to do … just like food it doesn’t have the same vitamins after all, does it?
“Failure is key to success”.
Ask anyone who has ever had any success in anything if they have ever failed. You will get a big clear “Yes!” because everyone has failed at something. Most people probably know about Thomas Edison and his spectacular failure rate but here are a few other examples:
J.K. Rowling -known for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series- was rejected by 12 publishers
Einstein didn’t speak until he was 4 and didn’t read until he was 7
Van Gogh only sold 1 painting in his lifetime
Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team.
In games you get 1000 lives and more! We don’t stop playing till the game says “Game Over” but then we click on “New Game” or new try.
“Gaming could be good for pain relief”.
a 2012 literature review published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that in the 38 studies examined, video games improved the health outcomes of 195 patients on every front, including psychological and physical therapy.
Plus, in 2010, scientists presented research at the American Pain Society's conference, which found evidence that playing video games, especially virtual reality games, are effective at reducing anxiety or pain caused by chronic illness or medical procedures.
"The focus is drawn to the game not the pain or the medical procedure, while the virtual reality experience engages visual and other senses," said Jeffrey Gold from the University of Southern California.
“Better Decision Making”.
Shawn Green from the University of Rochester wanted to see how games affect our ability to make decisions.
The study had a group of young adults with no gaming experience play an action game for 50 hours.
A second group of the same age played a slow-paced strategy game instead.
After the study, Green had nothing but good things to say:
“Action video games are fast-paced, and there are peripheral images and events popping up, and disappearing. These video games are teaching people to become better at taking sensory data in, and translating it into correct decisions.”
A colleague of his even went on to say that shooters can change the brain by dramatically enhancing many of our low-level perceptual functions. Definitely good news for all the Halo and Call of Duty fans out there.
“Games Can Help (Not Hurt!) Your Eyesight”.
Who grew up without ever hearing their parents say “you’re going to go blind watching that screen all day”.
For a while, it did seem like they had a point since we tend to blink much less frequently while playing a game.
This can cause serious problems like eyestrain and dry eye syndrome.
Another team of researchers from the University of Rochester sought to prove if games really worsen our vision.
The 2009 study involved having a group of experienced first-person shooter gamers plays Call of Duty and Unreal Tournament 2004 while more casual gamers played slow games like The Sims 2.
After testing, those who played the first-person shooters showed signs of having a better vision than the others.
Daphne Bavelier, the leader of the study, discovered that playing action games improves an ability called contrast sensitivity function.
This ability helps us discern between changes in shades of gray against a colored backdrop, which is very beneficial while driving at night.
“Video Games May Help Treat Depression”.
A few years back researchers in New Zealand sought to find out if video games can be used to treat mental disorders like depression.
This was done with SPARX, a game specifically designed to provide therapy to teenagers in a way that’s more active and enjoyable than regular counseling.
Over 168 teens with an average age of 15 participated, with all of them having shown previous signs of depression.
While half of the group received traditional counseling, the other group got to play SPARX.
The game involves creating avatars to rid the virtual world of enemies representing gloomy, negative thoughts.
Every stage also introduced general facts about depression, including ways to relax and deal with negative emotions.
Here’s their conclusion after discovering that SPARX players did better at recovering from depression than the other group:
“SPARX is a potential alternative to usual care for adolescents presenting with depressive symptoms in primary care settings and could be used to address some of the unmet demand for treatment.”
“Games has a purpose, meaning and can actually help!”.
Darfur is Dying is a video game made in 2006 by Students at the University of Southern California that provides a window into the experience of the 2.5 million refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan. It is designed to raise awareness of the genocide taking place in Darfur and empower college students to help stop the crisis. The game was developed in cooperation with humanitarian aid workers with extensive experience in Darfur.
First, you choose a Darfurian character to represent your camp. Next, you are instructed to go out and get water, which is the goal of the game. You are warned about the implications of some of the game's rules,
In the game, the user chooses a Darfurian character out of 7: a guy at the age of 30, a 26 years old woman, 5 kids from 10 to 14 years old from both genders to find some water... but watch out hide yourself from the Janjaweed militia! Upon success or failure, they learn that their chances of succeeding were predetermined by their gender and age if they are still young the militia takes them, if they are adults they get killed or raped. The navigation system in the game enables the player to learn about the situation in Darfur, get involved with stopping the crisis.
As we saw no one plays a game and doesn’t gain something ... either you get a positive impact or a null impact. We haven’t seen any area that has been damaged where there is worse performance.
Playing video games can be very high speed, can create a lot of chaos, create a lot of multiple environments where you have to make decisions, and all of these are forming skills in brain so … No, I think games really help improve our cognition and awareness training our brains making us better Human beings.
But of course, too much of anything is going to be bad after all.
You will get more learning gained from smaller sessions spread out over time than one BIG block.
When it comes to my own experience, I’ve played games for more than 13 years never suffered any gaming related injuries. While may I never know if gaming helped my brain, I do know it didn’t destroy it … so take that mom!
