Love the enthusiasm people have nowadays for saving the environment and being more mindful of invasive, feral cats. I've seen lots of younger folks especially more willing to consider elimination of cat colonies, which is a HUGE step towards removing ferals from our ecosystems. But please for the love of god be realistic about your expectations, and stop acting like you'd rather do nothing than do TNR.
On paper, it sounds like it would be so simple to just trap and humanely euthanize any unadoptable, feral cats en masse and have the rest adopted. This plan sounds great; no more cats sick and dying on the streets or in the woods devastating local wildlife, yay, problem solved right? Not at all.
In reality, you have to make compromises. You cannot-- no matter how many like-minded people you have-- make a massive feral-cat-humane-euthanasia project happen. At least not today, and not in most of the states. Every. Single. Feral cat colony that is requested for spay/neuter at my work has a caretaker who is advocating for them. Sometimes these people are lovely, understanding, and willing to stop at nothing to help these cats. Sometimes they're genuinely out of their minds and we need to take MONTHS of our time and resources slowly working away at their colony and helping to educate and make them understand the importance of this.
And in both of these scenarios, no one requests we euthanize these cats. A neighbor may threaten to shoot them, an HOA may be passive-aggressively harassing the caretaker, but the people who are asking for services and taking responsibility for their colony never have once asked that we kill them. And we have to work with that!
We can't just say "Sorry, we know what's best actually so we're going to take it from here!" People would flip the fuck out if we told them that about any part of the TNR process, much less euthanizing their entire colony. We HAVE to work with these people who are actually willing to reach out for help, and show them and others who have colonies that this needs to happen. When one colony is sterilized and helped, other people see that and begin to trust that TNR isn't evil, that spaying/neutering isn't a horrible thing to do to your cats, and that they will be overall healthier when they're not only fixed but are also receiving resources and upkeep from a rescue.
TNR is about compromise, it's about taking responsibility for colony management NOW, rather than deciding we don't have a "perfect" solution and waiting decades for anyone to come up with something better or for public opinion to change.
It's so fucking frustrating to see ecologists and other accredited rescues bashing TNR, because we simply have no better solution! If we went with mass-euthanasia we would have NO ONE working with us, no one funding us, and no one with colonies wanting to let us help them. We can't even get half of the local population to agree that spaying/neutering isn't a terrible thing to do to your animal, how the hell would we convince them that these ferals shouldn't exist here anyway?
All of that shit to say: I'm tired of people on their soap boxes saying TNR doesn't stop the problem, its time consuming, it's ineffective, etc. It IS effective and its the best solution we have. It takes time for a fully sterilized colony to disappear, but over the years they will. And at the end of the day, I would so much rather TNR colonies than scare off the people taking care of them and have a larger, disease-ridden colony that is suffering and has devastated the ecosystem further

This is a reminder for those who handmake Christmas presents that now is not too early to start. It may in fact be a good time to start if you have a lot to make/your craft takes a long time. You should maybe start it now, whether that's brainstorming or actually doing the crafts!

Israel will try to paint this assassination as a victory, as if killing 200+ journalists, the highest number in recent history, says anything other than how defeated and cowardly this genocidal entity is. What a desperate attempt to silence the truth. Fuck this dying entity.

The filter relies on manually curated open-source blocklists, including the ‘nuclear’ list, provided by uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist,” DuckDuckGo said in a post on X. “While it won’t catch 100% of AI-generated results, it will greatly reduce the number of AI-generated images you see.
