⛰️ — as you may know, hurricane helene devastated appalachia. if you enjoy my blog or southern gothic aesthetic, consider contributing to the efforts to aid appalachia in these difficult times. we are one of the poorest areas of the country. we are one of the most overlooked. this was a catastrophic amount of destruction and loss. the mountains will recover, but the people here will take a little longer. generations will feel this devastation. please do what you can and take care of each other.

Photos and words taken from various Facebook posts:
Appalachia was never prepared for this.
I’m sharing in hopes to raise more awareness and also to encourage any type of support that can be provided to Appalachians.
Entire towns have essentially just been washed away. So many people have lost everything they had, some even losing loved ones.
Below are some organizations I have been seeing locals share to help with the recovery efforts:
-RISE Erwin https://gofund.me/bad8e5ab
-American Red Cross https://www.redcross.org/donate/dr/hurricane-helene.html
-Unicoi County Animal Shelter https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=QRXK7CAJK2GCE
-Report Missing Persons 1-800-824-3463
-United Way of East TN Highlands https://unitedwayetnh.org/help/
There is a lot more to the NC Mountains than Asheville.
Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Vilas, Sugar Grove, Elk Park, West Jefferson, Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Sylva, Cullowhee, Brevard, Bryson City, Hendersonville, Cherokee, Waynesville, Burnsville, Candler, Canton, Spruce Pine, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, Linville, Marshall, Maggie Valley, Newland, Grandfather, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, Old Fort, Morganton, Marion are just a few of the cities and towns that have been flooded and/or destroyed. The counties of Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Ashe, Watauga, Transylvania, Burke, Caldwell, Alleghany, Madison, Buncombe, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Clay, Cherokee, and Swain are devastated and in need of the same help, some even more.
Other counties that fall under various definitions of Western North Carolina include: Alexander County, Catawba County, Cleveland County, Surry County and Yadkin County. When these counties are added, they form a total regional area of roughly 11,750 square miles (30,400 km2). This makes the region roughly the size of Massachusetts. Western North Carolina holds 11% of the state's population.
There are millions of people up there with no electricity, no communication, no water, and no way to get out or let rescue teams even know where they are. I am not taking anything away from Asheville and the utter destruction there or any other areas in NC that have damage. The level of destruction is unimaginable. But it's not one or two cities or towns that are in need of help.
This does not include the destroyed areas in the Tennessee mountains, Western Virginia, Georgia, or South Carolina.

Hey! I'm not sure whereabouts in Appalachia you're located but with everything coming out of the WNC/AVL/ETN area hope you are safe!
Thank you so much for checking in. <3 I'm from Southwestern Va, so we did get hit by the storm. Lots of trees down from mud and water escaping the mountains, and some people had power poles and lines go completely through their homes. We were without power for a few days, but others aren't getting their'n back until tomorrow evening at the earliest. One of the worst parts is not being able to reach out when the disaster does happen: most of us live outside of town, so cell service is out of the question, especially when the power goes out.
Massive tree down on the side of the small bridge going toward town.
But we didn't get it as bad as some did. Some places in Appalachia got completely wiped out, namely places in North Carolina and Tenessee. People are missing, animals gone, homes and businesses are completely underwater. Majority of us who're in Appalachia are lower income, so the devastation really hits home when those affected could never be able to afford to get anything back. It's absolutely heartbreaking. Some photos for reference:
Ashville, NC.
Asheville, NC, residences.
Interstate 26. Erwin, TN. I did find links to some fundraisers if you or anyone else would like to donate to help (by no means do you have to, just knowing and getting word out there is help enough <3):
RISE Erwin
American Red Cross
Unicoi County Animal Shelter
United Way of East TN Highlands
If you're in need of food in the Ashville Area, Mercy Chefs are donating free meals
Christ in Action, if you're needing help with debris clean up.
Samaritan's Purse if you or anyone you know is in need of oxygen after losing power or equipment.
Hunger and Health Coalition for Boone, NC.
Send supplies via Amazon for Unicoi relief.
Hotel Assistance
Call 1(800) 824-3463 if someone you know or love is missing.
#Thank you again for checking in on me#It means the world that you care <3#Sending so much love your way.#national news update#appalachain mountains#natural disasters#appalachia#north carolina

If you are speaking over Appalachians and Floridians about Hurricane Helene to endorse a presidential candidate, screw you.
I've seen too many people on social media (including family members) say "if you vote for x this November, this won't happen" and I'm tired of it. People need help right now. People need supplies and support right now. Do not wait until November to just vote. We have at least three more tropical storms and hurricanes on the way and with how unpredictable the weather's been lately, they could be just as bad.
If you can reach one of the places affected, see if you can volunteer to gather supplies. Check on your friends and family who live in the Southern Appalachia and offer to help.
If you can't because of the awful flooding, please at least donate. Here's a trustworthy charity.

8hrs ago as of early morning oct 19, in Hartford TN, still a huge amount of unmet need.
Erwin, today. Burn piles going and still so much to go.
Hot Springs' river is still piled high just like this roadside, with a little hollow in middle where the mud-tan river flows through. Boarded up windows, pancaked buildings, veins and veins of roads unpassable.
We still need help.

Idk that some people realize how much water came through NC and Erwin and through East TN. This is the “House on the Rock” it sits right beside the CSX main line the bottom picture shows you how high it sits with normal water levels the top picture was after the storm was over

A link from a friend on here with a community close to their family
And then a link with a number of places you can donate
appalachia is devastated. towns i loved, towns i visited all the time, are gone. not damaged, GONE. they are leveled to the ground. there is nothing left but rubble and ruin. people are dead. appalachia is poor to begin with and relies on tourism for a lot of its income, and multiple of those tourist locations are just...gone.
my town is okay, but it's flooded and wrecked. trees are blocking all but one way out of our neighborhood. power lines are hanging limp in the roads. we've been without power for over 24 hours and will continue to be without power for likely another 24+. disabled people and poor people are GOING to die from this. gods save appalachia.
#i am not technically appalachian#but im a southern#and i have southern pride as in this area is my home

K-9 Cat presents: Madcap
Recorded and Produced by James Sims of Pinehouse Sound and Design
Artwork by Jonathan Afonso
K-9 Cat is a solo lo-fi / indie project spawned from singer/songwriter, Chris Erwin after he moved to Nashville, TN in 2018. Previously, he fronted the Orlando, FL-based indie-rock band, Captains Of April. Using unconventional recording techniques, Chris is hoping to capture songs that have been stockpiling in his head for many years and to find the audience who will appreciate the unique approach that differs from the mainstream music industry.
Chris has recently relocated to The Azores Islands, off the coast of Portugal, where he has made a new home for the K-9 Cat project.

This is so terrible. Not treating your employees like human beings just leads to tragedies like the recent deaths caused by management at Impact Plastics in Erwin, TN, where managers refused to allow workers to evacuate in the middle of a hurricane until the building began to flood and the power failed. By then it was too late.
There was only one road people could use to escape and it was washed out. 11 people were swept away by the floodwaters and 6 of them died. They shouldn't have even been working that day, there was plenty of warnings about the approaching Hurricane, but to Corporate America profit will always be more important than people, even the lives of their own employees.
I know a company that does both these things and no surprise, when you shop there, the employees are always miserable and agitated. You should kill your managers in such situations imo. The only reason I receive treatment slightly above this is i'm lucky enough to have managers who are also bothered by these business practices. The water one is especially bad if you have heat intolerance, I was so sick regularly before I switched to a department with more leniency regarding water.
Depending on where you live these things may violate labor laws though so if you're in the same situation look into it. However in my experience any labor law violations happen without consequence regardless
