There's a reason why Odysseus sounded so broken when he had to choose between him and his crew. Let's not forget that.
Relistening to the thunder saga and people LOVE memeing on Eurylochus for the "but we'll die" line. You think Odysseus would just forget that he led this crew into battle for 10 years? That Eurylochus is his brother in law?? because they mutinized??? if Eurylochus would've done the same, like Odysseus had said, then Odysseus would've done the same in Eurylochus position. Hell the entire point of their development is that they changed into each other. Of fucking course he sounds so broken, he fought with these men for 10 years. Newsflash, one mutiny isn't gonna change that he actually cared about them. He had their backs, patched them up, lifted their spirits when they were down, fought like all hell to make sure they were okay before the Underworld Saga. He. Cared. About. Them.
That's why the choice was so difficult!!
“What did he think was gonna happen???” Eurylochus thought his captain was still in there. He had no idea just how far gone Odysseus was. He had known him as someone who cared for his men. Even after Scylla its difficult to accept someone you thought you knew so well had changed so drastically.

“Captain?….But we’ll die.”
Eurylochus sounded so small. Like a little boy talking to someone who’s supposed to be his friend and not understanding what’s happening because it doesn’t make sense.
Nobody touch me.

tel/ody/pen stuff i’ve had in my silly brain for a while
first off i see everyone talking about how long it takes for telemachus to get used to odysseus actually being there and getting to know him as a person rather than a legend, but.. however. the first ‘i love you’s. cause odysseus is used to telling telemachus he loves him. i mean thats his kid, he knew him as a baby, and he knew he loved telemachus. but like. tel doesn’t know odysseus. like he does, but barely. he knows odysseus is his father and he’s used to the idea of that, and he knows he’s supposed to love him, but they missed 20 years of each other’s lives. so? when doesn telemachus tell ody he loves him?? great question. it happened 8 months after odysseus returned, right after dinner and story time. it slipped out as telemachus left the dining hall and bid his father goodnight. it came naturally and telemachus didn’t even realize what he’d just said. odysseus was WRECKED.
for the first few weeks after odysseus got back, telemachus slept in his and penelope’s room. like they wpuld just NOT be apart. even after that they still never let each other out of their sight for too long. guys seperation anxiety and abandonment issues in this family are SEVERE but they do work through it it’s okay
once he’s comfortable, telemachus tells odysseus secrets and stories not even penelope knew about.
odysseus has a hard time seeing telemachus as an adult and not an infant. like it’s so weird for him to believe that the child he once held in his arms is a man now.
subsequently, odysseus and telemachus do a lot of infantile father-son things together. to make up for the years they lost. they skip rocks, swim in lakes, tell really stupid horror stories. and then they rule a kingdom as king and prince. they talk business, travel, kill suitors.
odysseus and penelope rule the kingdom EQUALLY!!!! this is so important because its set in ancient greece, when queens were typically only used to bear princes and to adorn the king. penelope has just as much say in what does and what does not happen in ithaca. they’re partners. in marriage, crime, and ruling.

Whatever you do, don't think about Eurylochous' soul drifting down the River Styx repeating "Captain? But we'll die..." over and over for the rest of eternity.

“I opened the wind bag while you were asleep” This isn’t an apology for going against direct orders— This is an apology for doubting Odysseus’ authority when it came to protecting his men. This is Eurylochus admitting he was wrong for assuming Odysseus’ wouldn’t protect his men by warning them about the dangers and those consequences . This is an apology towards Odysseus for believing that he would ever lie, or not tell the complete truth, when it came to the crew’s safety.
“Eurylochus, light up six torches” The wildest thing about ‘Scylla’ is that telling Eurylochus to light six torches wasn’t Odysseus’ response to his apology. It wasn’t the actions he chose due to his anger and betrayal of Eurylochus.
It was predetermined.
Odysseus isn’t angry at Eurylochus. Odysseus knows the sacrifice that needed to be made, and that is why he could not verbally forgive Eurylochus. He couldn’t say “it’s okay, we’re past it now,” because he was about to ‘ruthlessly’ kill 6 of his own men. I say ‘ruthlessly’ because think about how much more ruthless it wouldve been if Odysseus forgave Eurylochus, then killed six of his men.
Essentially, ‘Hey captain, I’m so sorry for doubting that you ever had the safety of your crew as a second priority when it came to your own reasons. So glad you’d never be like that and I’m SO sorry I ever did think you WOULD do that. So glad to have this cleared up ❤️’
‘Ummmmm Captain what the FUCK was that. Why did you JUST go against everything my apology stood for.’
Scylla was one of my favorites as soon as I first heard it, but THEN you add Eurylochus’ apology into the mix and what he really means with it.

If I had a nickel for every time a talented goofy man read a book about another talented goofy underdog man that uses his wits to get through any situation
and then made a WHOLE ASS MUSICAL about said goofy man that he read about where he goes through his trials, tribulations, loses all his friends, and turns into a shell of what he once was....
AND THEN stars in his own musical as the leading man.
I'd have have two fucking nickels????????
Which is fucking weird that it happened twice.
I am the monster raw raw raw.
