Amid Israel’s ongoing genocidal war on Gaza, maternal healthcare faces excruciating challenges. Deliberate and systematic Israeli attacks on hospitals and medical centers, and critical shortages of humanitarian aid, including medicine, have created a crisis that is endangering the lives of both mothers and newborns. The situation is critical. There are an estimated 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza and some 180 births every day. Israel’s decision in October to prevent food, water, fuel and electricity from entering Gaza created a desperate situation. Inadequate nutrition, exposure to cold and hot weather, the absence of clean water, and poor sanitation weigh heavily on the wellbeing of women and children. The circumstances force them to consume contaminated water, heightening the peril of dehydration and waterborne diseases, particularly among vulnerable groups such as expectant mothers, new mothers and young children. Fuel shortages and the constrained capacity of the few remaining medical facilities exacerbate the difficulty for women in labor to access hospitals. Um Amin, a mother with a few children, confronted with the harsh reality of displacement, recounted her family’s struggles during Israel’s aggression. As bombs relentlessly fell on their neighborhood, reducing their home to rubble, Um Amin had to seek refuge at a school run by the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) in the northern Gaza Strip taking only very few belongings. She was pregnant. And in the school there was little by way of basic necessities such as clean water, food or even clothes for her children. She considered moving south, where food might be a little more accessible. Her husband refused, causing conflict between them.He feared not being able to return. And while she believed that the Israeli army was attempting to force them to leave, she also felt it was a matter of life and death for her children. “It was heart-wrenching to witness my kids fighting over scraps of bread. My 4-year-old started stashing away bread in his pocket for later. I was shocked. Before the war, I never slept without knowing my children were fed. Now, most of the time, I am certain they never feel satisfied.” Her entire motivation to carry on became a matter of feeding her children She denied herself food for their sake, but had also to remind herself of the child within her. “The baby inside me is also a priority, so I had to eat too.” She found the balancing act incredibly challenging, an unbearable burden of motherhood. “I am going to share something I’ve never told anyone I know: I contemplated suicide to escape the weight of this responsibility.”
After the Israeli army unexpectedly stormed al-Rimal, a Gaza City neighborhood, for a second time, Um Amin panicked and fled again, this time going from the UNRWA school to a relative’s house. But her fear caused her to enter preterm labor. A doctor, at the nearby al-Sahaba medical center, had to resort to a cesarean section. It was hell, Um Amin said. There was insufficient anesthesia and she could feel the scalpel cutting into her body. There was no electricity; the doctor had to use a handheld flashlight to see. Um Amin’s cries of pain could not drown out the crashing of shells around her. The operation left her utterly drained. She couldn’t believe she was still alive.She needed nourishment to recover what she had lost during the bleeding and to breastfeed her son. But hunger was stalking Gaza. Food was scarce, there was no white flour in the markets, and Israel was blocking aid trucks from entering the north. “All I had to eat was bread made from animal feed and water. When I had my other children, I relied on foods rich in animal proteins, but it was impossible this time. The price of meat was five times higher than normal.” Unable to adequately breastfeed her child, she had to find infant formula. But the price was multiple times higher than it used to be and more than she could afford. Eventually, she was forced to buy formula that was past its expiry date. “You might blame me, but there was literally no other option. I didn’t have enough money. It wasn’t clumped together, so the doctor told me it could still be used.” She would never find out. Due to the lack of clean water, she prepared the milk with non-potable water from a well. The baby refused to drink.

“By 1900 child mortality was already declining—not because of anything the medical profession had accomplished, but because of general improvements in sanitation and nutrition. Meanwhile the birthrate had dropped to an average of about three and a half; women expected each baby to live and were already taking measures to prevent more than the desired number of pregnancies. From a strictly biological standpoint then, children were beginning to come into their own.
Economic changes too pushed the child into sudden prominence at the turn of the century. Those fabled, pre-industrial children who were "seen, but not heard," were, most of the time, hard at work—weeding, sewing, fetching water and kindling, feeding the animals, watching the baby. Today, a four-year-old who can tie his or her own shoes is impressive. In colonial times, four-year-old girls knitted stockings and mittens and could produce intricate embroidery; at age six they spun wool. A good, industrious little girl was called "Mrs." instead of "Miss" in appreciation of her contribution to the family economy: she was not, strictly speaking, a child.
But when production left the houschold, sweeping away the dozens of chores which had filled the child's day, childhood began to stand out as a distinct and fascinating phase of life. It was as if the late Victorian imagination, still unsettled by Darwin's apes, suddenly looked down and discovered, right at knee-level, the evolutionary missing link. Here was the pristine innocence which adult men romanticized, and of course, here, in miniature, was the future which today's adult men could not hope to enter in person. In the child lay the key to the control of human evolution. Its habits, its pastimes, its companions were no longer trivial matters, but issues of gravest importance to the entire species.
This sudden fascination with the child came at a time in American history when child abuse—in the most literal and physical sense—was becoming an institutional feature of the expanding industrial economy. Near the turn of the century, an estimated 2,250,000 American children under fifteen were full-time laborers—in coal mines, glass factories, textile mills, canning factories, in the cigar industry, and in the homes of the wealthy—in short, wherever cheap and docile labor could be used. There can be no comparison between the conditions of work for a farm child (who was also in most cases a beloved family member) and the conditions of work for industrial child laborers. Four-year-olds worked sixteen-hour days sorting beads or rolling cigars in New York City tenements; five-year-old girls worked the night shift in southern cotton mills.
So long as enough girls can be kept working, and only a few of them faint, the mills are kept going; but when faintings are so many and so frequent that it does not pay to keep going, the mills are closed.
These children grew up hunched and rickety, sometimes blinded by fine work or the intense heat of furnaces, lungs ruined by coal dust or cotton dust—when they grew up at all. Not for them the "century of the child," or childhood in any form:
The golf links lie so near the mill
That almost every day
The laboring children can look out
And see the men at play.
Child labor had its ideological defenders: educational philosophers who extolled the lessons of factory discipline, the Catholic hierarchy which argued that it was a father's patriarchal right to dispose of his children's labor, and of course the mill owners themselves. But for the reform-oriented, middle-class citizen the spectacle of machines tearing at baby flesh, of factories sucking in files of hunched-over children each morning, inspired not only public indignation, but a kind of personal horror. Here was the ultimate "rationalization" contained in the logic of the Market: all members of the family reduced alike to wage slavery, all human relations, including the most ancient and intimate, dissolved in the cash nexus. Who could refute the logic of it? There was no rationale (within the terms of the Market) for supporting idle, dependent children. There were no ties of economic self-interest to preserve the family. Child labor represented a long step toward that ultimate "anti-utopia" which always seemed to be germinating in capitalist development: a world engorged by the Market, a world without love.”

So This Is Love
Leon Kennedy x Reader x Chris Redfield
Tumblr media
Summary; You are in a poly relationship with Chris and Leon
CW; fluff, smut, dp, blowjob, fingering, creepy neighbor, protective boys. I think that's it, MDNI
AN; ahahahha I did it oh my gosh that was hard i'm sorry it took so long its 3.2k words I hope you like it byeee oh also please don't e afraid to send request I need ideas
You're not physically strong, not to say you're a complete weakling either. However, you're definitely considered fragile compared to your boyfriends. They're basically your guard dogs, but you try your best not to rely on them. You're still an independent woman who can take care of yourself. Realistically, you have to be when they aren't around, which is more than you think. They both work for the government, and oftentimes they're both gone around the same time. You do your part of course, make sure the house is nice and tidy, groceries are stocked for when they come home starving. They need all the nutrition they can get. You like to give them a taste of domesticated peace when you are able to. Being self-employed definitely has its perks when it comes to scheduling. The boys insist you don't even need to work, but you don't want to seem useless. You're grateful for them, and you like to show it. Who knows what you'd be doing if you hadn't met, let alone date Leon S Kennedy and Chris Redfield. You'll admit, when they're home, you're putty in their hands. Only after you've taken care of them though, you want to make sure they're safe and sound at home. To them, you're their precious flower, their safe haven.
Currently you're walking home from the market, which happens to be right outside of the neighborhood. It's quite convenient since you don't have a car, you like walking around anyway. You have three filled totes of foods, you've been needing to fill the fridge. Both your boyfriends have been on a mission for the last two weeks. The time has been lonely and boring, but you're proud that they're saving the world. As you approach the house, you notice your neighbor staring at you. His name is Gary, and he's usually sitting in the dark or watering his front lawn.You offer a warm smile, although he is a creepy older man, you try to be friendly. He slowly waves at you.
“Need a hand, doll?” Gary steps forward in your direction. You let out a nervous chuckle and shake your head. “I'm alright, Mr. Dawson, thank you though.” You politely decline as you approach your porch. The older man stops at the fence dividing your yards. He keeps a smile on his face, one that shows his dirty, cracked up teeth. All that smoking really did a number on him.
“Where are those strong men of yours? Shouldn't they be helping their little lady?” He questions, raising a brow. You roll your eyes as you fumble with your keys, trying to open the door.
“They're at work, but don't worry, I can take care of myself.” This wouldn't be the first time he's tried to get close to you, in a way that is more than friendly neighbor. Anytime the guys aren't here, he's trying his best to get to you. Means he's scared of them, but you're not so easily put off. Having two special agents as boyfriends has its perks when it comes to self defense. Fortunately, Gary hasn't pushed too far.
“Don't you ever get lonely when those boys are gone all the time?” The old man asked with a tilt of his head, his brows furrowed slightly. You sigh as you finally open the door, you turn your head to him, pick up your grocery totes, and give him a fake smile.
“Nope! They never make me feel lonely, have a good day Mr. Dawson!” You quickly enter the house and close the door. While it's supposed to be a ‘neighborly’ conversation, you always end up uncomfortable. The way he looks at you always makes it worse. You shrug it off and continue with your day, putting away the groceries and organizing the kitchen. You hear the sound of your phone going off, you received two messages. Both from your boyfriend's.
Hey baby, Leon and I will be home tonight.
So excited to see you princess, expect cuddles.
You smile brightly as you read the messages, they're finally coming home! You just have to do something special, maybe make their favorite meal. You gasp as an idea pops into your head. You quickly go to your room and search through your closet. After a couple minutes of digging through your clothes, you find a lingerie set you recently got. It's lavender lace, with a little bow at the top. It perfectly cups your breasts, and shows off your curves. You put it on and wear a blue silk robe that Leon gifted you. Humming softly, you fix your hair and check the time. They should be home in a couple hours, so you decide to set the table and prepare to cook dinner.
“You know Claire can't keep a secret.” You hear the door open from the front room, the sound of Leon and Chris's chuckles blessing your ears. You jump off the couch and watch as they take their shoes off. “That's true, I remember when we told her about asking Y/n out. She was so close to slipping we had to go for it.” Chris laughed before seeing you leaning on the wall of the kitchen.
“Hey baby girl!” He smiles as he holds his arms out for you. You quickly go into his arms. Chris chuckles and spins you, making you giggle. Leon turns and beams at the sight of you in the shiny robe he got you. He steps forward and hugs the both of you.
“I missed you guys so much, you have no idea.” You say teary eyed, when they come home alive and safe is when you process the fact that their jobs are incredibly dangerous. You never know if you'll lose one, or both. The boys let you go and smile at you, each of them holding your hands.
“We missed you too, princess. Was everything okay while we were gone?” Leon asks softly, kissing your knuckles. You smile and nod slowly.
“Everything is clean and food is ready.” You say softly as you examine them for any injuries. You only find a few bruises here and there, which is better than most times. The two smile at you.
“Let's eat then, hm?” Chris goes to the kitchen and serves the plates for all of you. You sit at the table and smile as you all begin to eat. Chris and Leon talk about the mission, or as much as they're able to. Then they insist on hearing how you did.
“It was good, mainly work and cleaning. I started doing some work outs in the garage, figured it would be good.” You admitted as you picked at your food. Chris and Leon looked at each other before back at you. Chris is the first to speak up.
“That's great, baby girl. Leon and I would love to work out with you if you need pointers.” He tilts his head as you think.
“Yeah, I'd like that. Just.. nothing too intense please. I'm still learning.” You say softly as you look at them. Leon gives you that sweet smile, from the pictures you've seen, that boyish charm never left him.
“We'd never push you too hard, princess.”
“We actually have a routine idea, but.. might be too intense for ya.” Chris hums out, his tone feigning sympathy. You perk up a bit as Leon smirks.
“What is it?” You ask, tilting your head curiously. Leon takes each of your plates and rinses them off before setting them in the dishwasher.
“It definitely would work up a sweat. Even knocks the wind out of us doesn't it, babe?” He glances over to Chris, earning a chuckle.
“Maybe you, but I never get tired.” Chris stands and goes behind him, squeezing his ass. Leon jumps and wacks him with a hand towel. You blush, but smile. You always enjoy watching them give each other affection. You stand up and bite your lip.
“Can you show me what it is?” You ask, innocently opening your robe just enough for them to notice the lingerie underneath. It grabs both of their attention.
“I suppose we can teach you, but you have to listen to us. Think you can do that baby girl?” Chris makes his way over to you, pulling you gently by the waist. You smile and nod.
“Use your words.” He orders.
“Yes, Chris.” You sway nervously, starting to feel your heart race in anticipation.
“Good girl.” Chris praises with a kiss to your hairline. Leon hums and goes over to tug at Chris’s jeans.
“Let's go then, wanna give my lovers a good time.”
~~~~
Leon and Chris guide you to your shared bedroom. They begin to take off their shirts and pants, leaving themselves in their boxers. You giggle at this, they aren't very good at hiding their eagerness. You can already see the bulges. Chris’s cock definitely has more girth to it, while Leon's got the length. You love the balance, they both make you feel heavenly when you make love. The joy of sharing such intimate moments with the greatest men you know will never get old.
Chris is the first to initiate, stepping behind you and kissing at the back of your neck. You giggle in response, his stubble being very ticklish. Leon smiles, adoring the sound of your laughter. He'll do anything to hear it, do anything to make both you and Chris happy. He steps forward and grabs your hands, wrapping your arms around his neck. He wastes no time, connecting your lips in a heated kiss. Chris smiles and rubs his calloused hands along your curves. Leon gently parts from you, moving some hair out of your face as you pant. You glance over and see the curtains open, also noticing Gary’s open as well. You start to feel uneasy and shudder. Your boyfriend's notice this.
“What's wrong, princess?” Leon's deep, but gentle voice rings through your ears. You look at him and point to the open window curtains.
“Mr. Dawson has been making me uncomfortable… again.” You say quietly, gripping Leon's shirt. The blonde quickly looks at Chris, already seeing a look of anger in his eyes.
“Easy there, big guy.” He hums calmly to Chris. While Leon is definitely frustrated by how your neighbor is making you feel, he tends to be the more level headed one. Chris on the other hand, is not afraid to humble someone. He's ready to bang on that door and give Gary a what for.
“Fuckin creep, we really need to get her a gun.” The brunette hisses to his boyfriend. Leon chuckles and pets your head.
“We'd have to show her how to use it first. What do you think, baby?” He looks down at you, a gentle smile appearing. You melt at the sight of him, what a man. Leon and Chris are your fucking gods. You'd do anything to please them.
“I'm willing to learn.” You say softly, wrapping Chris’s arms around your waist, making him relax again. He cracks a smile and kisses your head. Leon slips out of your grasps and goes to close the window, making sure the curtains completely cover it. Chris sways with you and you smirk as you remember what you're wearing.
“I have a surprise for you, gentlemen.” You hum as you go to the foot of the bed. Leon returns to Chris’s side, both of them looking at you curiously. You slowly untie your robe before letting it fall to the floor, revealing your lingerie. The blonde and brunette gape at the sight of you, taking in your appearance.
“Holy fuck, I'm gonna take a bite out of that cake.” Chris growls, stepping towards you. He lifts you up with ease before tossing you on the bed. You squeak at this, followed by a giggle. He then crawls over you, kissing at your neck again as he starts to take off your set. Leon watches with lust darkening those blue orbs. The scene unfolding in front of him is like a dream. Once Chris has you completely naked, he immediately plays with your breast, making you moan. Your nipples become hard and sensitive.
“Such a lovely girl.” He praises you with a low tone. He then looks over to Leon, noticing him biting his lip.
“Come join the fun, pretty boy.” He gestures the blonde over. Leon's cheeks flush at the nickname, but he's quick to join. Chris carefully kneels beside you as Leon is on your other side. You watch as Chris grabs his throat and pulls him for a kiss. Loving, but also rough. It's a sight that has you squirming, it'll be engraved in your brain. The way Leon whimpers into the kiss all needy is delightful to your ears. You carefully run your hand along the blonde's abs, down to his inner thigh. The sound of his sigh is heard as Chris parts from him, smiling. They both look down at you and you give them an innocent smile.
“Such a good girl,” Leon hums as he trails his hand down to your core, rubbing his middle finger through your slick. You whimper and buck your hips. “She's so wet, Chris.” He breathes out lovingly.
“Oh I bet, poor thing has been missing our dicks, hm?” Chris coos to you, earning a quick nod. He chuckles and pats your thigh.
“On your knees, baby girl.” He orders, you're quick to follow, switching to your hands and knees. Leon laughs a bit at how eager you are, gently rubbing your ass. You smile at him and shake it. Chris slaps it, making you yelp. You glare at him. He laughs and moves behind you, taking a look at your glistening pussy.
“You're right, Lee. She's soaked.” The brunette growls as he watches with lustful eyes. Leon moves over in front of you, finally taking off his boxers to reveal his hard cock. Your mouth waters as you watch it hit his stomach. Leon smirks and cups your cheek.
“Want a taste, princess? Go ahead.” He says in a husky tone. You gingerly lick at his tip, gliding all the way down to his balls. After a moment of doing so, you take him into your mouth, earning a deep groan. Chris smiles at this before leaning down to lick a stripe along your pussy. You moan at the feeling of his tongue, lifting your hips a bit more. Leon grabs your hair, making a ponytail to hold as you bob your head. His head falls back as he moans, while Chris eats you out like a starved man. You suck on your boyfriend hungrily, eyes rolling back as you already feel your climax approaching. Chris smirks and slides two fingers into your clenching hole, pumping them in and out of you. The sound of Leon’s moans grows louder as he grips your hair.
“Fuck- I’m so close princess.” His chest rises and falls with quick, heavy breaths. You feel him twitch in your mouth, bobbing your head a little faster to help him finish. The ache in your jaw is painful, but so worth getting to see Leon come undone. His load shoots into your throat, a loud moan escaping him. His back arches as sweat beads on his forehead. A string of curses follow as you slowly lift your head, letting him go with a pop. You swallow his load and smile at him as he rubs your head. Chris continues to fuck you with his fingers and tongue, a wonderful feeling. The growing feeling of warmth and tightness in your core is making you go dumb, whimpering for him to go faster. As you feel your orgasm about to reach its peak, Chris stops completely. You whine at the sudden emptiness, making the buff man chuckle.
“I thought we should try something new tonight. How about you take both of us at once?” He suggests, sliding his boxers off. Your eyes widen, cheeks turning red as you look at Leon. He smiles at you and places a gentle kiss on your nose.
“It's up to you, princess. We promise to be careful of course.” He soothes, you think about it for a moment. It’s definitely something you’ve dreamed of, but knowing how big they are, you wonder if they’ll even fit. It’s at least worth a shot, that’s what lube’s for, right?
“I think I’d like that.” You look back at Chris, a sweet smile on your face. Chris returns the smile and rubs your hips. He lifts you up effortlessly, making you giggle. Leon adjusts himself so he’s laying flat on the bed. He then reaches over and grabs a bottle of lube from the drawer of the nightstand. Squeezing a generous amount on his hand, he begins to rub his dick. You watch with fascination before Chris hovers you above Leon. You slowly settle yourself onto him, there’s little resistance due to the lube and how wet you are. You then lay down on his chest, leaving yourself open for Chris to enter. Leon rubs your back while Chris lubes up his dick as well. He lines himself up with your cunt, but doesn’t enter yet.
“What’s the safe word, baby girl?” He asks softly, not wanting you to end up uncomfortable in any way.
“Red.” You answer quietly, giving him the go ahead to enter. As he slowly slides in, you tense up, biting your lip.
“Relax, Y/n. It’ll ease up shortly, deep breaths.” Leon guides her through it as she squeezes his forearm. Once Chris is bottomed out, he stops, groaning deep in his chest.
“So damn tight.” He and Leon look at each other and smile, wordlessly in agreement that their girlfriend feels like heaven. They have to hold back from moving so that you can adjust. Fortunately, it doesn’t take long for you to let them know they can move. Chris is the first to start thrusting his hips. At first, the stretch is big and of course a little painful; but as they move, you can feel the pain fade into pleasure. Your mouth hangs open as soft moans escape you, taking comfort in the way they both have you sandwiched. It feels so good, so safe to be in between them. Leon whimpers as he feels you clench, whispers of praises being spoken in your ear. While Chris is growling and occasionally degrading you.
“Pussy’s so tight for me, baby. You like being a dirty whore for us, huh?” He grabs your hair, lifting your head a bit as you mumble.
“Yes sir, please- i’m gonna cum!” You moan out, Leon chuckles and cups your cheeks.
“Go ahead, sweetheart, cum for us.” As he gives you permission, you feel the knot in your core snap. A loud moan falls from your lips as the overwhelming sensation of your orgasm takes over. The feeling of you tightening around them only urges Leon to follow. He groans as his second climax takes over, holding you closer. Chris finishes last as usual, he grunts as he thrusts harder into you, making you whimper. The feeling of both of them filling you up is just so amazing. The movements come to a stop, all of you laying on each other as you breath heavily. The boy’s look over you to make sure you’re okay, and they can’t help but smirk as they see their cum ooze out of you.
“Alright then, bath time.” Chris stands and lifts you up, Leon goes ahead and sets a warm bath for all of you. He kisses Chris, then you. You’re incredibly grateful to have these caring men in your life.
Hi hi!!! I love your headcanons so much, they're all well thought out. Even the funny ones! Do you have any headcanons for your pet au fanfics?
Oh?
Uh
Actually. I did not have any particular headcanons to be honest
But I'll throw these out for thoughts:
- demons are seen as high end pets and slaves (pretty usual for the au), but are usually shockingly affordable with the exception of 'pure' bloodlines that track directly back to Muzan (the kizuki in particular). A high end demon like Upper 6 could cost several grand to own.
- Muzan was defeated, permanently weakened, and given the option to release his demons from his will, kill them all, or be killed. He then went into hiding, hoping for a day when he's strong enough to gather his army again. He also altered the demons to give them the ability to reproduce with each other. Because many demons end up killed and can no longer be created via Muzans blood, they would go extinct otherwise and Muzan needs his demons to exist if he ever has hope of regaining power.
- demons have adapted to be able to handle a bit of sunlight, though prolonged or heavy exposure sickens them quickly, and kills them. They cannot regenerate in sunlight at all. Wisteria will still halt their regerative abilities and kill them.
- demons no longer eat human meat, unless it's given to them or they happen to be the extraordinarily rare 'wild' demon. 'Wild' demons, who have escaped human enslavement, are generally killed upon capture. 'Domesticated' demons can eat any variety of raw or lightly cooked meats, but human blood can be used for extra nutrition and is purchased from special donation markets where humans are paid quite well to give their blood
- because muzan was adamant about insuring the species survival, demons go into a 'rut' period of about a week to two weeks where they are much more likely to seek someone to mate with. Humans have figured out how to use hormone injections to stop it from happening or even to force a demon to enter their rut. This period is exclusively referred to as Rut, not heat.
Each of the clones handle it in different ways in my au.
For example. Sekido claims to be unable to go into rut, but the truth is that he is so stressed about his brothers and whether they're even alive that his hormones are imbalanced and prevent it. If he knows they're alive, or better yet, if they happen to be with him and safe, he may be able to enter this period but he's so good at hiding it that you're likely just gonna think he's particularly grumpy that week. At least until he's suddenly getting you involved with his needs.
- urogi is actually impressively in control of himself, at least until you give the ok to go further than snuggling in his nest. Then he's a beast. Lasts about a week but goes into rut the most. Please prepare to lose all the soft things in your home because he WILL steal them for his compulsory nesting. Aside from that, he seems affected the least. He's still a happy, sweet demon, and he mostly just wants to cuddle and be close to his favorite person.
- Karaku is terrified. He hasn't had a natural rut in a long time, so when he finally feels safe enough that his hormones level out and he enters one, he freaks out. He associates these feelings with horrific things thanks to his abusers, so he tends to get fearfully aggressive towards anyone who approaches him- even his own brothers. Do NOT try to touch him, he will panic and think he's right back 'THERE'. If he, by some miracle, comes to you for any physical attention, keep your hands strictly above his waist.
Eventually, he will allow Sekido close to guard him from any potential harm as he hides in his room. Bring him extra blankets. He likes being hidden in soft, warm things. The better he can hide, the less frightened he will be.
If you need to ask him something, have Sekido ask for you so that his poor brother doesn't feel like your presence is in the room.
How you treat Karaku during his rut will make or break the little trust he has in you.
- Aizetsu's previous owners always had these sessions blocked via drugs, so he's actually never gone into rut before and doesn't know how to handle it. Like Karaku, he hides. He is embarrassed easier than normal during his rut and honestly just needs a gentle hand.
Eric turns into the baking supplies aisle, tapping his thumb against the cart in rhythm with the Christmas music playing overhead.
He hadn’t intended to stop at the grocery store on his way home; after slipping on a patch of ice in front of a school field trip on his way to work, dropping and shattering his favorite work mug in the break room between meetings, and being told for the umpteenth time that another client has gone with another publisher, Eric, if you don’t start showing improvement then we’re going to have to look at other alternatives, all Eric wanted to do was go home and take a long, warm bath. Start that food critic’s memoir he picked up at a flea market a few weeks ago. Maybe—finally—clean out and reorganize his disaster of a spice cabinet, something to take his mind off things.
Just forget this day ever happened.
But then his editorial assistant accidentally deleted one of their client’s manuscripts while performing a mass exodus of unused files, and just like that, Eric went and cried in the bathroom because the day officially got worse than he ever thought it could get.
By some miracle, Dex down in IT had been able to find an old save of the file on the system’s hard drive. It didn’t have most of the notes Eric added for corrections or changes, nor did it have any of his assistant’s annotations. Really, it was the most bare-bones copy, but it was the entire manuscript in it’s most recent glory.
For that, Eric would’ve kissed Dex right then and there.
He loves Nursey too much to do that, though, so instead he did what he always does: he hugged Dex tightly, asked him what his favorite dessert was (snickerdoodle cookies), and at five o’clock he took the Green Line to West End and walked a few blocks to the best Whole Foods in Boston.
“Now you’ve gotta be kidding me,” Eric murmurs, standing in front of the rather unfortunate-looking flour selection. Usually, there’s a complete inventory of all types—bread, whole wheat, all-purpose, self-rising, pastry—and that’s half of the reason Eric goes twenty minutes out of his way to shop here. Yet all that’s before him now is a couple of bags of all-purpose and a full row of cake flour.
Great. As if this day couldn’t get any better.
He pulls the shopping cart close as a family enters the aisle and considers his options. Normally, he prefers using a half-and-half combination of whole wheat and all-purpose, but after last week’s batch of pancakes, he’s out of whole wheat. He could get the cream of tartar and ground cinnamon now and stop at the Stop & Shop near his apartment for the flour, but that place is hit-or-miss at best, and with how his day’s going he doubts they’ll have any in stock either.
Maybe he could forgo whole wheat flour this one time and just go with the all-purpose, but he really does love the taste it gives, not to mention it adds a bit more nutritional value. Nursey has been going on and on about how Dex is trying to eat healthier after losing his college-athlete physique, and—damn, maybe Eric should’ve offered to make something other than a dessert. Is it too late to call and ask if Dex would rather have some homemade protein bars? But then Nursey messaged Eric right before he left work with a bunch of crying emojis, thanking him and saying he was definitely going to steal some of the cookies from Dex, even though Eric’s pretty sure Dex would give Nursey most of them anyway, and—
“Bittle?”
Eric startles.
Looking up, he stares at the man before him for a moment before his heart skips a beat.
“Jack?” He asks dumbly, because it is Jack, standing there in an old, threadbare Samwell hoodie with a ball cap pulled low on his head.
He’s a little soft around the edges and worn down in that way all professional athletes are after retirement, but he’s still unmistakably Jack Zimmermann with that small little quirk of a smile and the way his eyes are piercingly blue in the fluorescent lighting of the store. His hair still curls around the ear like it did whenever he used to let it grow out but there are flecks of gray in his temple now. His jaw, even after all these years, is still so pronounced but it’s not as sharp as it was back at Samwell, hidden under a layer of scruff. He’s still wearing god-awful yellow sneakers, except they’re a newer pair from a different brand, bright and spotless.
“Hey, Bittle,” Jack says, warmer and surer.
Eric uncrosses his arms. “Jack,” he says again, feeling himself smile, “gosh, I can’t believe it’s—it’s been so long! Jack! How are you?”
On a reflex, Eric steps forward to hug Jack, and there’s this absolutely mortifying moment where he realizes he’s going to hug Jack Zimmermann, the Jack Zimmermann he hasn't spoken to in seven years, the Jack Zimmermann he hasn't seen outside of the NHL Network in ten.
But then Jack meets him halfway, pulling him into a hug with both arms wrapped around Eric’s shoulders, and it’s like the last decade never happened, the weight rolling off his shoulders as easily as could be. It’s like Eric’s back in Providence, back in Samwell. It’s Jack’s apartment and the front porch of the Haus and the bed of Coach’s truck in the thick Georgia humidity.
(It’s being in love with your best friend.)
“I’m good,” Jack says, his chest rumbling. “Great, actually.”
He pats Eric’s shoulder once and with that, they pull away from one another. “That’s good,” Eric says, pulling his shopping cart closer so he can lean an elbow against the handle. “How’s retirement been? It’s been, gosh, almost a year now?”
“Just about. It'll be a year this February."
“You miss it?”
Jack tilts his head. “Eh,” he drawls out, “honestly yeah, I do. But, well…”
He gestures down toward his knee, and it takes Eric a few seconds to remember that Jack's retirement had more to do with an unfortunate check and less to do with the fact he was thirty-seven. Eric immediately backtracks. “Oh, shit—lord, excuse my language, I didn’t mean—”
“No, no, it’s fine,” Jack chuckles, shoving his hands into his pockets. “The knee has its days, but besides that, it's good as new.” He pauses. “Sort of.”
Eric’s blushing ‘till high noon, he’s sure of it. "Well that's good, then," he says.
It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas starts playing overheard and they stare at each other for another awkward beat. Finally, Jack clears his throat. “But, uh, how have you been? I think Shitty said you were at…Morris…”
“Morris Press,” Eric says, pulling at the skin between his thumb and forefinger, mentally slapping his cheeks. He’s usually never this bad with talking. “But yeah! I’ve been there for six years or so now, it’s a really great job. Helping others do what I always dreamed of is just, you know, a really fulfilling feeling.”
“I bet,” Jack says, and he’s got the little smile on his face again.
Another, not-as-awkward beat.
“I mean, I never thought I’d go into publishing, but…,” Eric starts, and he doesn’t mean to ramble, really; it’s an accidental slip that he starts going on about his job and his coworkers, the projects he’s helped publish, how publishing his own cookbook right out of Samwell led to now, just talking Jack’s poor ear off in the middle of the store. Jack gives his little comments here and there, like he used to, and doesn’t once make Eric feel like he’s holding him, and that—that’s exactly why Eric finds he can’t stop himself. The easiness of it, how natural and comfortable it is. How the warmth of a dormant love flares somewhere in Eric’s chest because it’s different but it’s not.
He doesn’t stop until an older woman cuts in asking to get to the flour, and Eric takes a breath. “Goodness, I rambled there,” he laughs. “I suppose things haven’t changed all that much.”
Jack hums, looking at Eric with this unreadable, nearly intense expression that Eric would describe as soft, probably. If he looked into it too much. He’s nearly about to let Jack go so he can go home and panic-bake a pie and call Lardo about this entire day when Jack suddenly says: “Would you want to get coffee or lunch or—or something, sometime?”
Eric falters.
Then he decides that, maybe, this day isn’t a total bust.
