individual showjumping final! this course was gorgeous in all respects (especially love the wall that looks like the notre dame rose windows) (and the curled-up lizard topiary thing. love that guy) and also tricky as all hell. only three riders went double clear (bc the oxers are massive and the striding is so so technical).
Canada: Mario Deslauriers on Emerson. i love watching the jumpers move - they’re so forward. two sets of reins. nicely in time, but two rails down. 
Germany: Phillipp Weishaupt on Zineday. drop noseband. some gape between fences. one second over, one rail down. 
Argentina: Jose Maria (jr) Larocca on Finn Lente. started rough with a knocked rail, and the combinations really got them. one second over, five rails down. 
UK: Ben Maher on Dallas Vegas Batilly. mare! nose net. froth. i love watching this mare; she’s got so much scope and so much try. in time, one rail. Just caught the oxer in the double.  
USA: Laura Kraut on Baloutinue. came in nice and quiet, and Baloutinue seems fairly settled. i think she’s my favorite rider in the field. fighting a little in the turns. he tries so hard to keeps his legs out of the way over the last fence but it doesn’t quite work. in time, one rail. 
Austria: Max Kuehner on Elektric Blue P. drop noseband, froth. gape. also knocks the last fence - i think the riders are going to have to take that extra second to come at it perfectly straight. one rail, in time. 
France: Simon Delestre on I Amelusina R 51. rough start, knocks the first fence. gape. coming in close to the red flag on most of these fences. god that’s so much gape. in time, two rails. 
Germany: Christian Kukuk on Checker 47. i do love watching the jumpers move but so many of them are hyperflexed before the round starts and that i could do without. lots of gape -  there are so many stride adjustments in this course. rattles a rail on the double combination, but it stays. double clear!
Belgium: Gregory Wathelet on Bond Jamesbond de Hay. still love this name. hackamore! couldn’t quite clear the water. very fast round. two rails. 
Netherlands: Maikel van der Vlueten on Beauville Z. little awkward over the double combination - think it was a long spot. making full use of the space. double clear. 
UAE: Omar Abdul Aziz al Marzooqi on Enjoy de la Mure. little bit of froth. looked like a touch of sass in one of the lead changes (we've all ridden that). clever striding. in time, two rails. lots of pets for Enjoy as they leave. 
Japan: Takashi Hasse Shibayama on Karamell M&M. rolls the first rail out of its cups, knocks fence two and both in the double combo. elects (smartly) to retire. 
Saudi Arabia: Ramzy al Duhami on Untouchable 32. mare! gape - i can see her tongue in the close-ups. this mare is scopey as all hell - only knocks the oxer in the first double combination. in time, one rail. 
Mexico: Andres Azcarraga on Contrendros 2. having trouble over the oxers. takes the turn to the water fast and just slides to a stop; Azcarraga comes off. 
Brazil: Rodrigo Pessoa on Major Tom. Major Tom has braids in. starts a little under speed/behind the leg. knocks two rails, elects to retire.
USA: Karl Cook on Caracole de la Roque. mare! one of the hackamore girlies (and her noseband is fuzzy!). still don’t like her topline. they’re fighting about speed - Caracole has Opinions. the turn to the card suite jumps is awkward and the combination doesn’t go well. in time, two rails. 
Belgium: Gilles Tomas on Ermitage Kalone. nose net. nice quiet feeling round. in time, two rails down. 
Norway: Victoria Gulliksen on Mistral van de Vogelzang. having a Moment before the round starts. double combination literally trips them up - thought they were both going to fall trying to get over the oxer in the double combination. half a second over, two rails down. 
Brazil: Stephan de Frietas Barcha on Primavera. mare! two sets of reins. fast around the turn to the water, some speed discussions in the ensuing fences. scrapes her way through the triple combination and the card suite fences, but she makes it! really using that fifth leg. if you click with a mare, she will do anything for you. in time, one rail. 
UK: Scott Brash on Jefferson. his stripe and snip are so cool. drop noseband. knocks the oxer in the double combination. in time, one rail down. 
Saudi Arabia: Abdulrahman Alrajhi on Ventago. red ribbon. lots of stride adjustments. tt’s a bit of a slog for them today and you can feel it. uses all of his space to the card suite jumps. one second over, one rail down. 
Netherlands: Kim Emmen on Imagine. two sets of reins. first rail comes down. he’s tired - this is his fourth round this week. in time, three rails down. 
Italy: Emanuele Camilli on Odense Odeveld. hackamore? i think? shadow roll. first rail down. handles the double combination nicely. in time, three rails. 
Sweden: Henrik von Eckermann on King Edward. nose net. makes it through the water and following line by sheer force of will only for King Edward to make a wrong turn. little bit of discussion about it, then Eckermann comes off and takes the bridle with him. insists on leading King Edward back himself (we love to see it). Edward is still worked up - Eckermann is using the elbow in the neck trick to make space. yeah been there (regularly).
Switzerland: Steve Guerdat on Dynamix de Belheme. mare! gape. she is bound and determined to make this course her bitch. good for her! double clear. 
Switzerland: Martin Fuchs on Leone Jei. drop noseband. looked like Fuchs almost came off in the double combination and he lost a stirrup. almost swings left (same as King Edward) but recovers. in time, one rail down. out of the medals, but that was some impressive riding. 
Netherlands: Harrie Smolders on Uricas V/D Kattenvennen. froth. some gape. he’s trying but he’s tired. two time penalties, one rail. 
Ireland: Daniel Coyle on Legacy. mare! love her. she’s ready to get it done. froth. stretching down in the turn to the card suite fences. i think the striding gets fucked up, they knock the next four fences (card suite combination and the two after it). Coyle elects to retire. 
Ireland: Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz. converter reins. knocks the oxer in the double combination, runs into trouble in the triple. in time, three rails down. 
France: Julien Epaillard on Dubai du Cedre. mare! our other hackamore girlie 🎉 her blaze is fantastic. arguing about speed.sShe's scopey as hell and putting everything in. not quite steady enough to the second card suite fence. in time, one rail.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT PETER JULIAN EYMARD The Apostle of the Blessed Sacrament Feast Day: August 2
"The Eucharist is the supreme proof of the love of Jesus. After this, there is nothing more but heaven itself."
Pierre-Julien Eymard, the founder of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, commonly known as the Sacramentinos, and the women-only Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, was born on February 4, 1811, in La Mure, Grenoble, French Empire. His father was a smith whose second wife was Julian's mother. Since childhood, he developed an intense devotion to the Virgin Mary and for the Eucharist.
Before his First Communion on March 16, 1823, he went on foot to the shrine of Notre-Dame du Laus. Later, he came to know about the apparition of Notre-Dame de La Salette and enjoyed traveling to various Marian shrines throughout France.
After the death of his mother in 1828, despite his father's opposition, he entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in June the following year. However, he was dismissed from the formation house because of a serious illness, particularly 'weakness of the lungs' and migraine headaches.
After his father's death in 1831, he succeeded – with the help of his former superior – in gaining admission to the major seminary of the Diocese of Grenoble, where he was ordained on July 20, 1834.
He was assigned as assistant pastor at the town of Chatte, and three years later appointed pastor of Mount Saint-Eynard, whose church and convent were completely dilapidated, and where only a few people were attending the Mass. With the help of his two sisters, Peter began refurnishing the convent and restoring the church.
Although Eymard is known to have revitalized the place, he was dissatisfied with parish work, and decided to join the Marists (the Society of Mary). His two sisters were quite devastated as they had dedicated their lives to serving him.
On August 20, 1837, aware of his religious vocation, he joined the Marist Fathers, where he worked as a well-respected spiritual adviser of seminarians and priests.
In 1849, after meeting in Paris the members of the Association of Nocturnal Adorers, he felt the call to establish a religious congregation completely dedicated to eucharistic adoration.
On May 13, 1856, the Paris bishops consented to Eymard's plans for a 'Society of the Blessed Sacrament'. He left the Marists and founded in Paris the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. Two years later, together with Marguerite Guillot, he established the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, a contemplative congregation for women.
He used to say: 'Religious life is not the end, religious life is only a means;' and also: 'You take communion to become holy, not because you already are.'
Eymard was a friend and contemporary of saints John Marie Vianney, Peter Chanel, Marcellin Champagnat, Blessed Basil Moreau and Pauline-Marie Jaricot.
Peter died on August 1, 1868 in his hometown at the age of 57 due to complications from a brain hemorrhage. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on July 12, 1925 and canonized by St. John XXIII on December 9, 1962, his major shrine can be found at Santi Claudio e Andrea dei Borgognoni in Via del Pozzetto in Trevi. Peter named by St. John Paul II as the 'Apostle of the Eucharist'.
Peter is the patron of Eucharistic Adoration and Eucharistic Congress.

Cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, red currants, pomegranates, goji berries, lingonberries, rose hips, loganberries, and boysenberries. These are some of the most often employed red berry notes in contemporary perfumery that add a sweet, tangy, even zesty nuance to a fragrance.
Nowadays it seems that this family of fruity notes show up in just about every genre whether its raspberry paired with leather in Tom Ford's bestseller Tuscan Leather or strawberry paired with ambergris in Slumberhouse's Sadanne. This week, Fragrantica's international editors discuss some of their favorite fragrances with red berry notes. Think "men's cologne" and red berries might not be the first aroma to come to mind. However, over the last three decades as perfumers have become more and more adventurous we've seen a range of fruity nuances make ther way into the genre. For example, Jil Sander's 1989 Feeling Man put raspberry front and center while Tommy Hilfilger's first men's fragrance, 1995's Tommy, featured a prominent cranberry note.
Polo Red, developed by perfumer Olivier Gillotin in 2013, is first and foremost a red berry fragrance - tangy, juicy, and sweet. Whereas original Polo was a smoky pine forest and Polo Blue was the fresh aquatic, Polo Red takes the old theme of a "tangy red" masculine that we saw in Annick Menardo's 1995 masterpiece Givenchy Xeryus Rouge, replayed in scents such as 2008's Paco Rabanne Ultrared Men minus the spice/woods but with the addition of praline and citrus, and lightens it up with a touch of saffron, and a very understated amber-coffee-wood base accord.
This was an immediate love for me, someone who loves all things juicy and tangy. My problem with Polo Red has always been that, like many other modern Ralph Lauren fragrances, the performance leaves much to be desired. Still, linger it does albeit quietly with an almost musky trail for hours. As I typically do with initial launches, I longed for a scent that would be bolder, richer, and with more prominent gourmand nuances (where's the coffee?). A giant 4.2 oz bottle, procured for a mere $25 USD on an auction site, rarely gets used but when it does I marvel at how much I enjoy it...for the 2 hours that I can actually smell it.

Berries, in all their guises, have entered the realm of "serious" perfumery after they got a boost from the flavours industry and the body products craze for fruity smells during the late 1990s. L'Artisan Parfumeur may have been the pioneer, as far back as 1978, offering a blackberry & musk combo that highlights the natural fruity aspects of the particular type of mud used, but it took years for berries to become the norm for a typically youthful, upbeat, sweetish, happy scent. 
Gucci Eau de Parfum II is all of those things, minus the sweet. The composition on paper looks like a middle-of-the-road berries & musk affair, but the distinct advantage lies in balancing the tartness with the sweetness in that blackberry and blackcurrant chord on top. Therefore it provides a welcome freshness, but none of the less desirable traits we associate with man-made essences reserved for yogurts. Without being a natural smelling scent, it surrounds the wearer with an imperceptible aura which dries down to austere cedar, without being heavy at all.
Although its predecessor, Eau de Parfum I, a heavier oriental with select fans, was abruptly discontinued, this one still circulates and proves to be one of the most likeable berry fruit fragrances that even men can borrow. It's great for office wear, for casual wear, for everyday, for when you don't want to be too bothered by your scent, but want to be surrounded by a stealth mantle of clean tartness. Very pretty.

GUCCI Guilty Black Pour Femme

Being on the edge of leaving floral-fruity compositions behind, Gucci Guilty Black was just on time. I remember I liked Gucci Guilty when it first came out; it was inviting and less floral comparing with other releases that year but I didn’t think a flanker would merge more surprises and be more compelling than the original. After a flirty scented blotter had my attention I decided to try it on my skin; they doused my arm generously and I immediately felt the berry effect at the opening, ideally lined with sweet peppery undertones. It was explosive and enthusiastic, bouncing extensive sweet chords, absolutely it’s less floral and slightly lacks the powdery effect of the original; Gucci Black is absolutely all about berries. It’s fleshy, sweet and smoky; while I was expecting something bolder and darker it was tamed with a beautiful and nice berry sillage on my skin! It’s not wild or stained with a dark heavy tint of bold sexiness as expected but it has the right amount of fruitiness to be considered as a mature scent. The red berry, raspberry and vanilla trio reminds me of some remarkable fragrances while it develops; while lilac remains indicating to keep the entire development from being monotonous.
Personally, I love the earthiness of patchouli in a scent's drydown; here it merges beautifully on an amber/musky base while that fruity opining gets more sour and dry; over time it seems more oriental than it actually is. Black is a modern floriental fragrance that might be not very original but it manages to showcase a lot of “berry” sides every moment; every other note is on a supporting role while berries lead the show without a girly/sweet sticky effect that always scares me when berry or red fruits are listed in a composition. It’s absolutely sour, very smoky, moderately sweet and juicy with a sharp masculine twist at the same time. Nothing black about Guilty Black; it’s rather more of glossy red on me!

Aquolina Pink Sugar Simply Pink

Italy’s Aquolina has made itself a household name with the release of Pink Sugar in 2004. It was a sweet, fruity perfume for younger women that clicked with the public and became a runaway success. Some found it to be far too sweet to work as a “serious” perfume, but then came Simply Pink in 2013, which reframed what a sweet, pink-inspired perfume could be. The shift in notes made a dramatic difference. Most of the pure “sugar�� notes were pulled back, leaving raspberry, strawberry and almond as the full-bodied center of the fragrance. It’s a delightful exploration of red berries in their juiciest form, fresh and slightly bruised, with just a bit of the fresh juice appearing on the surface. Bergamot and green leaves add just enough bright freshness to give the opening spritzes a big blast. It’s hard to match the exuberance of Simply Pink’s opening.
It’s nine years between 2004-13, and you can feel how Pink Sugar’s audience has grown up. The cotton candy accord of the former has been replaced by white flowers and jasmine. The central accords of Simply Pink are where the perfume gets its most serious. It calms down substantially and becomes more floral, sweeter in a denser, darker path (with notes like licorice root and praline accord.) Some intriguing nuances drift in and out - a satisfyingly bitter citrus appears and disappears, a subtle vanilla skates in the background and a steady stream of red berries, now more sweet like jam cooking, bubbles away with some steam escaping. 
The varying temperatures of this scent are intriguing. It is both cool on top (raspberry has an icy, bracing quality,) and dark on the bottom, where jasmine, licorice, sugary praline and strawberry stew away. This stage of the fragrance lasts a respectable number of hours, somewhat linear, but retaining projection. It feels like a wholly natural evolution to see Simply Pink pick up the reigns from where Pink Sugar started its journey. Red berries was a great place to put the focus of this perfume that is “growing up” since berries are on that edge of sweetness and animalic roughness of the forest. This perfume uses them to a delightful end by balancing serious florals and light-hearted sweets to create something that nearly any wearer would find compels them to smile.

Bvlgari Omnia Coral

For years, I avoided any perfume with a mention of red berries, after having my nose recoil in horror numerous times smelling sweet, girly, “happy” fragrances like Aquolina and various Victoria’s Secret editions. I was convinced the whole group was the exact opposite of my taste in perfume. It was Bvlgari’s Omnia Coral that made me give berry perfumes another chance, and the main reason for this was that it lacks the syrupy sweetness of the bulk in berry laden perfumes.   At first spritz, Omnia Coral is very fresh, the bergamot standing out, and it has a fizzy quality that I love to start the day with. The freshness has an almost tart feeling to it, in which I recognize the pomegranate and what I guess is the note of Goji berries – the fruit of the shrub Wolfberry, which is an unusual ingredient in fragrance.     Chef Quentin Bailly won the《Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie》in 2013 at the mere age of 27. The《Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie》began in 1989 in France and has been seen as the patissier’s highest honor, nicknamed the patissier’s Olympics, producing celebrity patissier winners such as Christophe Michalak, MOF Angelo Musa and Belgium Chocolate Master Pierre Marcolini etc. Chef Quentin Bailly began his career at age 16 and have worked with MOF Stephane Glacier and Chocolate master Philippe Rigollot. He now works as an international consultant and a lecturer at the ecole Lenôtre Paris, the most prestigious pastry academy, and opened his dessert shop Chocolaterie Bailly Quentin in 2017.

France: Simon Delestre on I Amelusina R 51. a stallion - look at that crest. so much gape. too much gape, even for a jump course. i want a closer look at his bridle - two sets of reins. 
Ireland: Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz. okay that’s a decent pun. i wonder how old he is; he’s really grayed out. the bit set up looks ridiculous - there’s so many straps. 
UK: Ben Mahler on Dallas Vegas Butilly. this mare has some favorite cities, it would seem. she’s got a nose net thing too. low, tight frame in canter before the round started. they’re also clear and in time! she’s frothing tho 🙁
Germany: Christian Kukuk on Checker 47. nice, plain figure 8 bridle for once. he does a little extra kick with the back legs as he’s in the air over the jump. clear and in time. 
Israel: Ashlee Bond on Donatello 141. it’s always interesting to see how much sheepskin each horse likes; Donatello has it on all three straps of his breastplate. 
USA: Laura Kraut on Baloutinue. i like them. came in nice and quiet, gave Baloutinue some pets before they started. fantastic, chill feeling round/not frantic at all. clear and in time (5 seconds under!)
Netherlands: Maikel van der Vleuten on Beauville Z. for a horse who apparently likes wiggly lines, they looked very straight through the triple combination. also a nice round - boring, as my instructor would say. (that’s a good thing)
Brazil: Pedro Veniss on Nimrod de Muze. i couldn’t help it, i laughed at the horse’s name. there’s some head tossing, especially as Veniss tries to steady him before a fence. clear and in time. 
UAE: Omar Abdul Aziz al Marzooqi on Enjoy de la Mure. pretty dark bay. happy ears, even over the jumps. nice pair. 
Saudi Arabia: Abdulrahman Alrajhi on Ventago. red ribbon tail, watch yourselves y’all. his stirrups are green to match his coat and the saddle pad and ear bonnet. it’s cute. lots of sheepskin on the breastplate. not the ride Alrajhi was hoping for, methinks - he was shaking his head a little after the round. 
Australia: Hilary Scott on Milky Way. a gray mare, as her name suggests 🙂 sheepskin on her breastplate too. four rails down, but a nice ride in other respects. 
Canada: Mario Deslauriers on Emerson. head tossing in the turns and coming up to some of the jumps. two sets of reins - i don’t think it’s a double in the two bits sense, but there’s a definite elevated-control situation happening. looks like there’s a star under his fly bonnet! touch of froth. 
Belgium: Gilles Thomas on Ermitage Kalone. gorgeous chestnut and a big bold blaze. he’s got a nose-fly-net thing. lovely round (clear and under time) and lovely ride (no gape or froth). i like this pair.
