today I opened up the bubble drop game with the intention of getting the merging to work
instead I:
adjusted the scaling factor
added the Next Bubble preview, and
animated the dropper line
and then after doing all of those, I started on the merging. Figured out how to get them to notice that they hit other things, and to determine if those things are other bubbles of the same size.
Currently, two bubbles of the same size, upon colliding with each other, both vanish. (Except for a few cases in which only one of them vanished and the other didn't notice the collision at all. current theory is that the one deleted itself too fast for the other to notice it had been hit. I'll try to fix that tomorrow. either delay the free or have both try to free both. or maybe just have the one which is gonna spawn the new one free both.)
Having trouble getting them to spawn in a new bubble of the next size up. At first I wanted them to emit a signal, like the dropper does when dropping bubbles, but I couldn't figure out how to connect it to the level scene, since the bubbles are instantiated during runtime instead of in the scene tree in the editor. Then tried using add_sibling but that's not really working. Idk. maybe I'm calling it wrong.
it's past midnight, so I'm going to poke it some more later. just wanted to note this all down before I sleep so my brain can release it.

Fuckin' intermittent car problems, man
Had a weird resonant shaking at a specific speed for a while maybe 6 months ago, seemed to resolve with tire rotation & wheel balancing.
Just had a bunch of big maintenance done last month including on the suspension, followed by alignment. Car felt great to drive for a couple of weeks. Suddenly shaking again. Took it back to the mechanic to have them check on the work they did, that all still looked good. They said my wheel balance looked weird.
To the tire shop. Had them balance all 4 wheels. They gave me a deep discount because they just did that like 2k miles ago, but they found an imbalance and corrected it.
Shaking was like, better? different? happening at ever so slightly lower a speed?
Drove 140 miles on Saturday, just tried to stay away from the resonant speeds to avoid the shaking as much as possible. Seemed... maybe fine? Questionable. Wasn't loving it by the time I was almost home.
Seemed worse on Sunday and Monday. Colleague who's a former auto mechanic and lifelong Car Guy offered to take a look next time we'd be on site together, which is today.
So I drove to work today when I'd rather take public transit on a weekday morning, specifically so that my buddy could help me try to figure out what might be going on. And so of course, of course the problem did not happen when I was driving it in this morning. And it did not happen when buddy and I went for a test drive. Gahhhh

new coding challenge
Software coding is a highly creative pursuit. But for the past few years, I've put most of my software effort into maintenance and troubleshooting. I've written *some* new code, of course, but a lot of that was for demos and tests. I'd begun thinking of myself as primarily a maintainer, not an innovator.
For the past 6 weeks, however, I've focused on writing a new open-source library from scratch. So far, it's 7,000 lines of Java and 5,000 lines of C++ (excluding blank lines and comments).
Sustaining 250+ lines per day is possible only because a lot of what I'm writing is boilerplate requiring scant creativity. At this point, the design is mostly set. The API is closely based on another project. The biggest challenge has been boredom.
That's why on 11 July (when Gradle v8.9 was released) I pounced on the opportunity to upgrade all my projects, even though it was boring, routine maintenance. At least it was a different flavor of boring.
I look forward to finishing this phase of the project and getting back to maintenance and troubleshooting.

Recently I've been picking it up as a hobby and got selected for a few auditions. Some I plan on auditioning for require singing, and I have tried to record my singing, but my high notes aren't being picked up
I use OBS to record, and have messed around with most of the filters I use. I tried adjusting my gain, my open threshold, my everything, really. I've tried leaning closer to the mic, I've tried leaning farther from the mic. It's a HyperX Quadcast

Guide: Manual Keybinding in Veilguard
I’ve been having some issues with the keybind menu — certain keys are hard to assign. I’d try to assign a key and the box just wouldn’t update. I noticed some other people have had similar issues, both before and after the recent keybinding patch.*
This will likely be fully patched eventually, but in the meantime I worked around it by manually updating my keybind file. It’s easier than you’d think! Here’s how:
Exit out of Veilguard so it’s not running.
Go to File Explorer and search for “Veilguard”. A couple folders will come up.
Check in these folders until we find a file named ProfileOptions_profile.
Right click > open in Notepad.
We’re now going to see a long file with a bunch of lines. Don’t be alarmed by the size, we’re going to use ctrl-f to jump through it.
Each line that includes “.button” represents a keybind. The words are the action we’re trying to do, and the number right after “.button” tells us which keyboard key is bound to that action. We can find a table for those keyboard codes here.**
*I don’t have inside knowledge, but I suspect the trouble comes from keys that are also used to navigate the keybind menu itself. I think the menu gets confused when those keys are pressed, and doesn’t bind them properly.
**Games use various different mappings from keyboards to number codes. Huge shoutout to _eits on reddit for figuring out which number mappings Bioware uses. The reddit post also has some more in-depth info if you’re interested in that, e.g. for mouse mapping. It’s technically a guide for Anthem but most of the info also applies to Veilguard.
Example
Let’s say we wanted to remap “skip” to “/“. If we check the table, the numeric code for “/“ is “53”.
For this example, let’s assume “skip” is currently mapped to “[space]“ (code 57).
Now that we know what number codes we’re dealing with, we can go back to Notepad. We can ctrl-f for the word “skip” OR the number “57” until we find a line that looks like:
GstKeyBinding[...]ConceptSkip.button 57
Now we can plug in the numeric code for the key that we actually want. So in this example, we would change it to
GstKeyBinding[…]ConceptSkip.button 53
Once we’ve updated the line, save the file and close it. Open Veilguard and go to Settings. Confirm that the keybind menu is showing the desired key for that field. So, in this example, we would expect that “skip” is now bound to the “/“ key.
For most keybindings, we’ll probably need to do a bit of trial and error to find the right name. This file isn’t meant to be player-facing, so it uses a lot of weird/obsolete names for different actions. For example, opening the pause wheel is referred to as “PingPartyMember”. If you’re nervous about making changes, save a copy of the file first, so you can go back to the old version if needed.

A weird build issue
Today I released version 0.3.1 of the software library I'm working intensely on. At this point in the project, I expect releases to go smoothly, but this one didn't.
For this project, a release consists of 4 different software artifacts, each one built by a different job, running on a different build host: one on Windows, one on Linux, and so on. First I build normally, to ensure the project is in a working state. Then I "push a Git tag" that causes the build hosts to upload their artifacts to a staging repository. Since the build hosts and the staging repo are owned by different vendors, I generate a security token at the staging repo and feed that token to the build hosts, to assure the repo that I authorized all 4 uploads. Then I log into the staging repo and publish the uploaded artifacts.
It's a complex process, which took many tries to get right. However, it worked for 0.3.0 release, just 4 days ago.
Today, the normal build worked perfectly, but when I pushed the tag, all four uploads failed with permission errors. Logging into the staging repo, I discovered that the security token had a different value than I expected. Apparently it changed sometime in the past 4 days.
At this point, I got a little nervous, since *I* hadn't changed the token. But perhaps someone changed it for a good reason, such as in response to a security breach. It wasn't difficult to update the build hosts with the new token and restart the failed jobs.
The 2nd time around, one of the 4 jobs failed with a permission error. The other 3 were fine. I was puzzled. All 4 jobs were using the same token, stored in the same place. As far as permissions were concerned, either they should all succeed, or they should all fail. I double-checked the token and re-ran that job. It failed again.
The failing job was the one running on Windows. And I noticed that the first character in the token was a slash (/). And on Windows a slash is used to indicate a command-line option.
Perhaps the token didn't work on Windows because at some point it got passed in a command line, where the slash was mistaken for a command-line option and skipped, or erroneously escaped.
I generated a new token with no slash, re-ran the failing job, and it succeeded. So probably that slash was the issue.
Chalk up another weird build issue! I should gain some XP for this one...
