My adult advice is if you do pursue something you're passionate in for a career (or really if you go about getting any job) that being treated like shit is not fair to you. Working over 40 hours for your dream job a week, working 60 hour crunch hours for months for your dream job, working with no health insurance for years, your dream job paying you a wage too low to live where you need to in order to do the job so you're financially getting worse, your job not hiring enough people because you care about the work too much to let it fail so they just overwork you and have you do 2-3 peoples jobs, your dream job does not protect you from work hazards and you feel you'll lose your job if you bring it up? You don't deserve any of that shit. You deserve better. Whether your job is some boring thing you don't care about, or your absolute favorite thing in the world that you care about deeply and find to be the meaning of your life, you deserve to be treated fairly. You deserve to not be overworked to the point of suicidal or sick, you deserve to be able to go to the doctor and take your kids to the doctor and know if your kid gets a long term illness you can get long term treatment, you deserve to not have the entire success of a company fall on your shoulders to do multiple jobs if you weren't the supervisor who decided Not to adequately hire, you deserve to be able to go pee when you need to, you deserve to have adequate protection from dangers to your life. Period. No matter what job. If you're being treated like shit, you don't deserve it. It's not a price you should be expected to endure, not even for your dream job. It's a fucked up situation that real people caused by deciding to treat their employees badly.

Steve Harrington knew how to haggle. Raised by the most cutthroat business man in all of the state of Indiana, if not the United States as a whole, he knew the ins and outs of getting the best deal possible. He used this to his advantage a lot more than anyone knew.
The first time he brought out Steven Elias Harrington, son of Richard Jay Harrington was when he first got forced to sign NDAs to keep quiet about everything going on in Hawkins, Indiana. Despite only having shown up at the end, he still had a fat stack of papers to work through.
And he worked through the entire thing, taking his sweet precious time to read the entire thing, word for word. He signed nothing that day, letting the government employees watch as he took notes on every little detail, humming to himself, scoffing, and overall being as annoying about it as possible.
"These are terrible. Do better." He didn't say that exactly, but it was the general consensus as he gave them a verbal dressing down that would make his father proud (and his father was never proud). He made demands for money, for protections, for anything that he could think of. By the end, the government had agreed to provide him with a heaping helping of cash (enough to buy a house and help him live a comfortable life for the next twenty-or-so odd years), government provided medical insurance (complete coverage for the rest of his life), and a full ride scholarship for any college he wanted to go to.
Suffice to say he had rung that towel dry of anything he could ask of it. He knew that those government employees wished nothing but the worst for him, but he was satisfied with what he got, and he happily signed the fifth NDA they provided him with, flourishing his signature with relish.
Then, he became even more wrapped up in the whole thing when Dustin Henderson decided to raise a baby Demogorgon in his basement. A lot happened in those forty-eight hours, but the main one was that he got attached to the little shits, so he told them in no uncertain terms that they were not to sign anything before he looked the paperwork over.
They scoffed, rolled their eyes, but ultimately agreed. It was a very amusing few days, to say the least. The government agents (the same ones as last time) showed up with their giant stacks of paper, and came face to face with Steven Elias Harrington, and he could just see them die a little bit inside. He could practically hear what remained of their souls wither to dust.
And again, he forced them to sit as he read through every NDA, taking notes, scoffing, humming, and overall being a nuisance to them and their time. Then, he got the kids' attentions (as their eyes started to glaze over after minute thirty) and began his process.
The looks of pure awe, too, would be treasured for a very long time as he got their college tuitions paid for, government-provided medical insurance for the rest of their lives, and of course a big fat pile of cash ready for when they would turn seventeen years old. Each of them had enough money lined up for them that they wouldn't have to worry about anything until maybe their late fifties to early sixties if they were bad with their money.
And of course, he got himself another big pile of cash and access to the best lawyers in the United States if he would ever have need of it.
After that, he shouldn't have been surprised when everyone came to him for help post-Battle of Starcourt (dubbed by Dustin, of course). This time, he took two solid weeks pushing and pulling Uncle Sam in this direction and that to make sure everyone got what they needed. (Another fat stack of cash for everyone, legal protection for whatever they'd need it for, and a cover story that made everyone look the best that they possibly could. He also got college payment for Robin, since she wasn't there the first time, as well as the same medical insurance he got everyone else). Those government employees looked at Steve like he was the devil himself.
"You kinda are," Robin told him one day, after Steve recounted the specifics. "I mean, you are bleeding the government dry."
He gave her a grin. "Absolutely, I am."
Then, he and his merry band of misfits saved the world, stopping the Upside Down for good. The same government goons showed up, and instead of doing what they tried to do the previous time, they just came to Steve with all of the NDAs, and asked in the most sarcastically professional voice imaginable, "Are these up to your standers, Mr. Harrington?"
He gave his charming, King Steve smile and told them that he'd read it over. In the hospital room that held Max and Eddie, Steve pulled up a table and allowed everyone to watch as he flipped page after page, noting down the loophole phrases and weak protections, and every single trap meant to put them into a worse-off position and he threw it in the government's faces.
In return, he forced everything his heart could imagine out of them.
Another giant hunk of change for each of them.

A cover story so beautiful, so concrete that it got even the most closed minded to look at Steve's People and call them heroes.

"I'll save you both a seat," he told him with his sweetest, most charming smile.
The government agents left, and in their wake, Eddie Munson looked at him like he hung the sun, moon, and stars in the sky.
"Wow," was all the metalhead was able to get out for a while. "Just wow."
Robin glanced between Steve and Eddie, leaned into his side and quietly sang, "The lovers, the dreamers, and me."

VoxTek™ Employment Contract
I, @helluvahotelfan , invoke the infernal powers of Hell to complete the following contract between myself and the Overlord, Vox. Hereafter, "the employee" will refer to Jenn, "the employer" will refer to VoxTek™, "the Overlord" will refer to Vox, and "the contract" will refer to this agreement, signed and sealed by a handshake.
Payment: to complete this contract, the employee signs over possession of their soul to the Overlord. For as long as the soul remains in the Overlord's possession, the terms and conditions of this contract are considered valid. Additionally, the Overlord cannot kill or willfully maim or harm the employee while this contract is in effect.
Terms: The employer will provide housing(1), a competitive(2) salary, the latest(3) model of Hellphone, insurance (4), two weeks of paid training, 30 vacation days per year (5), 30 days of sick leave per year (6), a free upgrade to replace or enhance a body part(7), a 200 year(8) retirement plan, and 24/7 protection from reasonable(9) threats. The employee will fulfill the job description provided below to the best of their ability.
Conditions: This contract remains in effect provided both the employee and the Overlord wish to continue adhering to the terms. At any time, either party may request breaking the contract. The request must be accepted by the Overlord. The Overlord reserves the right to change the job assigned to the employee in the event of subpar performance.
Job Title: Junior Data Collector
Department: Research & Development
Job Scope: Junior Data Collectors follow instructions from Senior Data Collectors and report to Project Leads all data obtained throughout marketing, testing, and further analysis. Data Collectors observe tests, trends, and other indicated measurements at the direction of Project Leads and record data as instructed by Project Leads. Data Collectors are expected to report accurate figures. Data Collectors may, on occasion, be asked to participate directly in Projects but never to the extent Hazard Pay would be required. Any injuries incurred as a result of Data Collection are to be reported immediately to the Project Lead.
Hours: Mandated work hours are 1000-1600, Monday-Thursday unless Project Leads get approved for a different work cycle.
(1) Housing starts at one bedroom, one bathroom, kitchen and washer/dryer included 550 square foot apartment. Housing can be upgraded through promotion or by registering dependents with Human Resources. (2) Competitive rates based on job title and relative cost-of-living analysis for Pride ring standards. Salary will always be 400% of current housing cost. (3) Latest model refers to latest model to pass all safety checks and either is commercially available or in phase 4 of production. (4) Insurance covers health, vision, and dental plans, as well as maternity/paternity leave, Family Medical Leave Allocation, and associated costs. (5) Unused vacation days roll over but will not exceed 75 days. Vacation days accrued past 75 days will either be paid out to the employee in a lump sum, signed over to another employee, or forfeit. Decision must be made within 1 month of employment anniversary date. (6) Unused sick leave rolls over but will not exceed 60 days. Illness or injury requiring more than 60 days to recover but at no fault of the employer will be deducted from vacation days. Illness or injury incurred during the execution of job duties will not be charged to the employee. (7) Available upgrades subject to change depending on demand. Specific upgrade offered: replacement of one eye with a VokTek™ High Definition digital recorder. Any data or information recorded by an upgrade becomes property of the employer with employee consent. (8) 200 year retirement plan based on projected life expectancy increase following the cessation of Exterminations. In the event Exterminations resume, this requirement will be lowered to 50 years. (9) Reasonable threats are those not provoked by the employee, provided the employee remains within designated areas when directed by senior personnel. Ex: leaving the approved VoxTek™ Extermination Bunker during an Extermination or insulting an Overlord/Sin/Ars Goetia are examples where the employer is no longer liable for the employee's protection.

One of the central contradictions of capitalism is that in order for it to function the people in charge of huge multi-national corporations are expected to act in the corp's best interests, but are incentivized to instead prioritize any short term gains over long term ones.
Capitalism does not seek out good design, good products, happy customers, satisfied users, or sustainable environments. It seeks only short-term profits.
Everyone's lives and quality of life for some short-term unsustainable capitalism
As opposed to capitalism which is burning the planet to the ground with climate collapse for short term profits for billionaires
Healthcare Insurance (not healthcare delivery) Insurance is one sector of the economy where capitalism does not work very well because the short term incentive to cheat is too strong.
Reality - this is 20 years too late. Many of us knew this back in the 2000s. Wall St, traders, investors put short term profits above US jobs and technological lead.
Marx was right about capitalism inherently leading to crisis. Short term cost-cutting through wage reduction benefits companies, but over a long period it shrinks the economy by reducing the spending power of workers. The post-WW2 boom masked this for a while, but no more.
Capitalism prioritizes profit, which can result in the exploitation of workers through low wages, poor working conditions, and limited job security. Companies operating with a wellbeing economic lens prioritize long-term investments in their employees over short-term gains.
Western capitalism outsourced itself to death to chase short term profits (throwing our industrial working class under the bus). On the other hand China can plan for the long term and exploited this shortsightedness to build up its industrial capacity and know-how.
@raginrayguns looking for people talking about capitalism and short-term profits on twitter gets a lot of hits but it's noteworthy that many of these conceptions of "short-term" range from 5 to 10-20 or even 50 years, and just mean "not sustainable indefinitely" or "cause long-term damage", they are not literally talking about the figures for the next quarter.

I did not sleep at all last night. I even went and laid down in the guest room after That Guy got up where I usually pass right out but I didn't sleep in there, either.
I feel like All the Shit.
Long morning ramble.
Sleeping in a night cap is annoying but it's keeping my ends from being fried for longer. My hair's texture was already chef's kiss, now it's double chef's kiss.

That Guy said that he has to run the car tax payment to town on his way home from work today but DO NOT try to walk home if he's not there when I get off work because it's going to be nearly 100F and wait for him to pick me up.
He also said he'll have to start looking for another car, which should have been done a very, very long time ago because I could have been working as soon as Son expressed and demonstrated that I wasn't needed by him anymore. Don't take that the wrong way, I don't mean he said "I don't need you." he said things like he'd like to go to the bus stop by himself and has shown that he can be trusted on his own, etc.
I did intend to get my own car (or a truck), but if he buys one and doesn't expect me to pay for it (though he may expect me to pay for it) that lets me put more into savings for later.
I think That Guy is suddenly aware of how difficult he's made it for me to work all this time, which is interesting because I really did think he did it on purpose and then was blaming me.
He was saying that to drop me off and pick me up at the mail room job he'd only be able to work 4 hours a day. Granted he'd earn more in that four hours than I will in 12 hours even with this moderately big pay rate. And I was like yes, that's why I'd been limiting my job search to positions on your normal route (as he'd demanded), but this job pays much more per hour than any of the others I can do locally and I have experience which makes it more likely I'd get in, so it's worth the extra time and effort in my opinion.
$19.23/hr is THE highest income I've seen locally for almost ANY job, actually... There was one federal job that requires a TS clearance that pays like $65/hr, most are paying around $15 with some management positions offering $17 - $24. The gas station I'm at is actually one of the lowest at $10 though there are some places offering $8.50. Because they can.
He did say he'd thought it was a federal mail position and I'd get the Big Bennies and retirement but I'd just be an employee of Goodwill so not get the USPS packet. I'm not the only one that's been confused by how the job was listed.

It's like he's only just now understanding what telling me to get insurance, which meant getting a job because he won't let the insurance companies look at his finances to prove that I can afford insurance and won't sell a policy to someone with less than $1k in the bank and no income, MEANS.
It means me being even more physically exhausted, in more pain, chores not getting done, falling asleep at the dinner table while eating....
He really did not expect me to throw myself out into the world like i have, and does not seem to have understood just how much of an inconvenience me working would be for him.
Like, he was crunching the numbers because he doesn't want to be thrown into a higher tax bracket even if it means more money coming in overall, but I think I'd be filing separately anyway so I can get back as much as possible without it being on a check in his name.
I wonder if the mail room folks get any sort of tax preparation deals since we're working IN an IRS office... Wouldn't that be nice to be able to say "It's my turn" and go sit down with an IRS prepper and do your taxes in person to be sure they're very correct?
So, I think I mentioned already the hours are 6:30-3 which is kind of nice as I do like getting my day over with early and I'd still be getting up at 3:30 with That Guy anyway so it's not like I'd have to change my sleep schedule at all.
The lady on the phone also cleared up some confusion for me about why the job listing said Goodwill, then IRS, and talking about custodial jobs????
So, I'd be an employee of Goodwill, and Goodwill contracts out those employees to other places, specifically the local Goodwill contracts out to federal and military establishments (the IRS building is on a small National Guard base so I do have to go through a checkpoint and get the car searched which is annoying and I hope I don't have to do that EVERY day, like I hope I get an ID card I just scan and can get in or something...) and their contract has been running so long with this IRS branch that Goodwill's sign is on the building.
The custodial job mention was them pointing anyone that IS severely disabled toward that job instead of the mail room position because the custodial job is slow paced which makes it suitable for people with developmental delays who may need more time to complete a task. But the whole job listing was a mess.
I do need to ask when the next bid is, because I could get hired on, the contract be rebid, and Goodwill lose which would leave me with no work until another contract was picked up, or could also mean a pay cut if they have to undercut another contractor to get the lowest bid and it's good to know what to expect.
She also said that some of the small mail crew, which is about 5 people (to me that is a lot because I'm used to being alone in the mail room) bring in knitting or crochet projects because it's slow now and then. That's generally when I would pick up a broom or a bottle of cleanser but I wouldn't mind crocheting at work :P
Also need to ask about lunch because the work day is exactly 8 hours so unless lunch is paid, I'd not be getting paid for 8 hours of work every day.

Anyway I've been feeling the guilt about maybe jumping jobs so soon (my start date would likely be mid August if not a little later), but I also helped find a vendor for something the gas station needed and that helps two people [who aren't me make more money... hm....] so I guess I don't feel too bad.
Manager asked me if I bake because people have been asking for fresh baked goods and I said no, I hate cooking and you can't make me do it, BUT I know that one of Son's classmates' moms bakes and is selling things through the local 7-11 so I'll ask if they'd be interested and they are. They should get in contact with the gas station any day now.
My suggestion is that the baker take some samples to the gas station and go talk to Manager in person, but I'm not the one running the business.

I Saw the TV Glow Deviation: If Owen Had Social Media
This obviously has spoilers. The film is on streaming so definitely watch it if you can first. Using they/them pronouns for Owen given those spoilers.
Most viewers accept the hypothesis that Maddy is right, and the mundane world where she and Owen live is the Midnight Realm, meant to torture Tara and Isabel while they slowly suffocate. It explains why there is no social media, memes or mentions of current events. This life is a cheap copy of our world, and no dental insurance even!
But what if it did?
Suppose the 2010s arrived the way they did in our world. Meaning Owen has seen social media rise. On a whim they google the Pink Opaque, and find fanart on deviantart, fic on A03, headcanons and video edits. People have written their continuations of the show. One blog even reviews each episode, having a "Racism Alert" and tracking all the microaggressions and subtext that plagues poor Isabel. So that when Owen on streaming sees the other version of The Pink Opaque and sees Isabel is a white blond girl, they know something is very wrong. Especially thanks to the black fandom of The Pink Opaque. They also call bullshit and some teens talk about a class-action suit against Netflix for fraud and whitewashing.
In their free time, Owen keeps Googling. And they have a LOT of free time during COVID lockdowns, when his boss keeps paying all the employees not working. Owen insists he is grateful for having a nice boss and being able to pay his bills.
Tumblr exposes Owen to fandom. They sees the good and the bad: the rule 34 art, people who insist that fanfic authors continue their stories after abandoning them for ten years, some fan-artists getting shamed for not drawing Isabel's hair and skin properly. Wikipedia tells Owen that Tara's actress went on to do a sitcom about friends doing wacky side hustles when their jobs get outsourced. Isabel's actress quietly retired after season five of The Pink Opaque. Some forums and YouTube videos quietly assert that being a black teen lead in the 90s-- both actresses were the age. oftheir characters-- was not a safe career choice.
Other people talk about queerness. Owen learns the terms for asexual and aroace. They feel a sense of relief. This is a part of them. It's perfectly normal to not like girls or boys, or men and women in this case because Owen is no creeper. Others talk about transitioning, and the symptoms for gender dysphoria. For some reason, these posts make Owen's heart pound and he gasps for air. He doesn't follow those users.
It leads to the same conclusion: this isn't his home, or his world. Because the kinning culture reminds him that another random stranger isn't Isabel. Even Isabel's actress isn't Isabel; Owen watches a video where, at the first San Diego Comic Con held since lockdown ended, she talks quite calmly about how she was blacklisted, no pun intended, after The Pink Opaque ended. In fact, the showrunner fired her because he insisted she was "difficult to work with" when in fact, Isabel's actress was pointing out that the Luna Juice drugging looked too similar to a drug overdose and the writers hadn't considered how traumatic filming such a scene would be for her and Tara's actress. Isabel's actress said she didn't want other black girls to watch the show and feel that horrible fate engrained into their minds; she's introspective, talking more confidently than her character ever had. Marco and Polo's actors, a set of identical twins who went on to film an evil wizard movie, had taken the time to check on her after the multiple takes, and even bringing her chocolates as an apology. They argued with the showrunner a lot about some of the raunchier jokes and fanservice, despite knowing they could be replaced at anytime.
She discusses how she had pushed back before, how her parents were constantly on set and making sure no one was hurting their daughter because her parents were not stupid about Hollywood dynamics or racist subtext, and their protection had worked for years until it didn't. There was a reason Isabel had curly hair and not ironed waves, why her bathroom had pomades and picks that her actress used.
Maybe the showrunner had gained too much of an ego after five seasons of success. Or maybe he wanted to move on to direct the next X-Men film. He had beaten out Bryan Singer for the part.
There were rumors he slept with the underage teens on the show, extras and regular characters alike, grooming them; Tara's actress refused to confirm that rumor because she would play the game to fulfill her dream of becoming a serious performer. Isabel's actress understood, even if she didn't agree. But Isabel's actress asserts the rumors were very true, and she doesn't care anymore because she refused to sign NDAs about illegal behavior no matter the hush money or the harassment. It's not like she's returning to Hollywood; she does the convention circuit for the fans who thanked her for saving them, for being a positive role model. Tara's actress is currently married to a former producer on The Pink Opaque, who looks no different from other genetic white dudes. She and Isabel's actress meet up for drinks occasionally.
Isabel's actress apparently went to college and got her PhD in anthropology. Though the revenue from The Pink Opaque and its reruns meant that she never had to work again, she didn't want to be Isabel anymore. Because Isabel no longer belonged to her. Isabel belonged to the fans that saw her, saw themselves in a black teen facing a hostile magical world. And Isabel belongs to the people watching this video. Like Owen.
Owen sits long after the video ends. Most of the comments say in all caps, "I KNEW IT!" and "There goes my childhood." On Tumblr, the post with the video gains 100,000 notes in less than five hours.
They could respond. Perhaps they could say, "She isn't Isabel. And this isn't the show I remember." Or, "Maddy was right."
Owen doesn't respond.
The next shift at the Fun Center starts a few hours later.
Owen doesn't call in sick, send an email apologizing. They just don't go. Because it's a new moon, meaning no one is watching from the sky. It's time to leave.

Investing 101
Part 2 of ?
In my last post I explained what stocks are, why companies might want to issue shares and some of the types of stocks. I also explained dividends and why some stocks are called Growth and others called Value stocks. The next logical question is, "How do I buy stocks?"
For most beginning investors, their 401K or IRA is their first opportunity to purchase stock. My recommendation to my kids (which I followed myself) is to set your 401K withholding at least high enough to earn the maximum employer match. Most employers will match a fixed percentage of an employee's 401K withholdings up to a maximum amount. Not withholding at least enough to get the maximum employer match is like taking a salary cut. This is 'free money' from your employer but only you save enough to take advantage of it. 401K plans are almost always administered by a large brokerage firm and through that firm participants are offered a variety of investment options, some more limited than others. I will talk a bit more about the various investments options later.
If you're already investing in your 401K and you still have after-tax funds you'd like to invest (in stocks or other investments), there are a few options.
The simplest, lowest cost option is a direct stock purchase plan (DSPP) which enables individual investors to purchase stock directly from the issuing company without a broker. I've never done this, but it's possible and if you're a big fan of a company and want to be a long term investor, you may want to consider it.
The more common approach is to open an account with a Broker. From Investopedia, "Brokerage firms are licensed to act as a middleman who connects buyers and sellers to complete a transaction for stock shares, bonds, options, and other financial instruments. Brokers are compensated in commissions or fees that are charged once the transaction has been completed." When you open an account with a broker, they take care of all trading paperwork and send you investment reports and tax forms.
ETrade and RobinHood are examples of Discount Brokers (low cost, self-service). They execute your trades (buying and selling) for very low fees and include online resources for the investor to research investments. It is easy to set an up account online and start trading using their mobile apps.
Full Service Brokers like Morgan Stanley, Ameriprise, Edward Jones, etc. operate on the other end of the spectrum. These firms execute trades like the self-service brokers but their account relationships include the services of a Financial Advisor. Ostensibly, the Financial Advisor is periodically meeting with you to review your portfolio, rebalancing your investments to ensure continued alignment with your goals and risk tolerance and recommending investments to buy and sell. Financial advisors generally charge an annual fee of 1% or more of the value of your portfolio. These brokerage firms also have online investment research materials, but the idea is that the Financial Advisor is actively helping you steer the ship.
Alternatively, you can consult a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). These individuals can help manage your broader financial life (including investments, budgeting, insurance needs assessment, estate planning), though CFPs generally aren't brokers (i.e. they don't execute stock trades). Rather than charging a percentage of your portfolio as a fee, CFPs generally have a fixed hourly rate. That hourly rate might seem steep, but it is almost always less than the fee of a full service broker/Financial Advisor.
Assuming you're already investing enough in your 401K to get your employer match, which investing/broker relationship should you pursue? Because full service Financial Advisor fees are a % of your portfolio, these advisors tend to pursue relationships with wealthier clients. If you don't have a large portfolio, it can be difficult get the time/attention of a full service broker. (True story, 30 years ago a friend who was also our financial advisor fired Beth and I as clients when his firm raised its minimum portfolio threshold to exclusively service wealthy clients. I'd like to think he regrets that decision now.) A caveat to this is if your parents have an established relationship with a broker/advisor - then that advisor may be more enthusiastic about managing the adult child's portfolio. (Yes, this is an example of white privilege.)
If you're just starting out (ex <$100K portfolio), I think engaging a fee-based CFP 2-3x a year and opening a Discount Brokerage account is the way to go.
I know several investors with large portfolios who also prefer the Discount Broker strategy, however, because they loathe the idea of paying 1% of their portfolio every year to a financial advisor. There is plenty of research supporting this strategy for large portfolios... after all 1% every year really adds up. Over 20-30 years the 1% annual fee can be very expensive. Despite this, Beth and I have always used a Full Service Advisor.
Beth and I are both CPAs and financially literate, why would we pay the higher fees for a Full Service Advisor? We pay an advisor so we can sleep at night. When I was still working I checked my portfolio balance no more than once or twice a month. I check it more often now, but that's mostly because I simply have more free time. I've never spent any mental energy trying to research good investments. Most importantly, I've never had any emotional attachment to an investment. Every quarter or so we will meet with our advisor and he recommends investments we should sell, either because they haven't performed well or sometimes because they have performed well and have 'topped out'. I never feel any guilt or blame for investments that haven't done well because I didn't originate the investment idea when we bought it. I don't feel tempted to hang on to the investment in hopes that it will rebound and I will be proven right. I can be completely objective and devoid of emotion. And that's one of the reasons I've never lost any sleep over our investments.

Severance, flip phones, far from home: the impossibility of opting out
I finished Severance by Ling Ma about a week ago. I loved it so much. I am not in school anymore and I am having a hard time trying to fulfill my desire for intellectual conversation. It’s not like I’m not learning anymore. I’m learning so much. These days, I am filling in the gaps of my learning in the sections of life that I chose to put off while prioritizing academia. I’m learning to take care of myself, complete tasks, hold myself accountable, and generally survive. It is hard and I miss the conversations I would have in school that felt like they truly challenged and deepened my worldview. Reading has been a great solace to me in that way but it often feels lonely to read something and not get to discuss it with others. I can never simply read or watch something without wanting to dig in and discuss the implications. I like to use fiction to interrogate real things. I have so many thoughts about Severance and what it had me thinking about in my own life as I read it. I decided to write it down to at least converse with myself as I did so. I'm posting it online to see if anyone would want to engage in conversation with me as well. It is not in MLA or whatever. I’m not in school. I can write how I want.
I think that the title of Severance is very layered. On the surface, it references the phenomenon of severance checks (payments given to terminated employees that are fired due to layoffs or retirement). The payments are based on the amount of time that an employee has worked for the company. Effectively, it aims to take care of the people that have taken care of the company until they can find new work. Severance describes how companies have cut long-term employees and these checks in order to maximize profits at the cost of minimizing quality. This seems to echo a larger trend that the novel revolves around: a cutting off (or severance) from our interconnectivity under our current systems of hetero-patriarchal white supremacist colonial capitalism. What a mouthful. But basically… Society is severing us from the things that make living meaningful, and for many, possible.
The characters of the book all seem to be struggling with the desire to opt out of this system (who wouldn't want that?) The narrator, Candace, immigrated to Salt Lake City from Fuzhou as a child. This severance from her ancestry, culture, and family was done in aims of giving her a better life in the United States. In many ways, it was an action done by her parents in order to attempt to opt out of the struggles of life in Fuzhou, made increasingly difficult under global capitalism. Even so, the choice was really just opting into a new set of struggles. The book describes the complex effects of this immigration on Candace and her family. In addition, it describes the guilt of leaving and the burden of feeling as if you are in a country that despises you while you must constantly prove yourself to it.
Candace’s ex-boyfriend felt dehumanized by the working in corporate America and therefore lives on the fringes of the system, skimping by. He believes himself to be opting out of the system. In this quote, Candace interrogates his lifestyle.
“I know you too well. You live your life idealistically. You think it’s possible to opt out of the system. No regular income, no health insurance. You quit jobs on a dime. You think this is freedom but I still see the bare, painstakingly cheap way you live, the scrimping and saving, and that is not freedom either. You move in circumscribed circles. You move peripherally, on the margins of everything, pirating movies and eating dollar slices. I used to admire this about you, how fervently you clung to your beliefs—I called it integrity—but five years of watching you live this way has changed me. In this world, money is freedom. Opting out is not a real choice” (205).
The illusion of opting out is a privilege. Jonathan, unlike Candance, is American. This gives him the ability to exist in America without questioning or proving his belonging. He does not carry the weight of supporting his family or really anyone but himself. Even so, he barely manages that. Candace, not afforded many of Jonathan's privileges, works for in a corporate office. Jonathan, idealistic and blind to his own advantages, is consistently criticizing this choice.
I have always had dreams of opting out. I've spent much of my life dreaming of this. I think that part of why I went to college was to opt out of joining the workforce for four more years. I studied art because it seemed like that would be opting out of the monotony of having a Real Job. I bought a flip phone to opt out of smartphone addiction. I moved across the country to opt out of my family.
Severance depicts a world-ending incurable pandemic. The illness is called Shen Fever and it is somewhat akin to a zombie apocalypse without the eating of humans. The sickness comes for everyone, even if it does demolish the areas with the least privileges first. In the end, everyone is susceptible. You cannot opt out. You cannot buy your way out of an incurable disease.
You cannot buy your way out of climate change, even if you can avoid its consequences for longer. Sure, you may be privileged enough to be given the illusion of opting out but this planet is deeply, densely interconnected. You are not opting out. You are delaying the inevitable.
Over the summer, I went to an anarchist bookstore in Philadelphia and bought a book called Meaningful Flesh: Reflections on Religion and Nature for a Queer Planet. I would read the essays on my breaks from work, trying to see if I could be someone that reads academic theory in my free time. It ended up being very dense and difficult to get through but it was incredibly interesting to me. I was reminded of the second essay of the text when reading Severance. It is called, “Irreverent Theology: On the Queer Ecology of Creation” by Jacob J. Erikson. The essay aims to queer our ideas of nature and matter with a theological lens. That is a massive oversimplification of the text but I don’t want to stray too much from my original point here. I just wanted to include a quote from the essay to gesture to how these concepts in Severance have resonances in so many areas of life.
“For this particular nature-cultural moment, we must be irreverent of old stories and ideas in our constructive creativity. Ideas of pristine nature, untouched wilderness, essential selves, essential genders, and uncomplicated assumptions of desire and sexuality, deaden and violate the messy and embodied realities of creativity, embodied ecology, and enfleshed divinity” (74).
Collectively, we have attempted to sever ourselves from the environment that we are interwoven with, dependent on, and constantly in conversation with. The consequences are far-reaching and the effort is inevitably futile. You cannot sever yourself from the environment that sustains you. You are the environment.
On Saturday, I took an Uber home from my friend’s house and chatted with the driver. We talked about daylight savings and how stupid it is. Why make the sun go down sooner? I wish I could opt out of it, but then I’d be an hour early to every event from now until spring. I told him that I thought that the government was supposed to get rid of this system but apparently they were too busy committing genocides. We talked about Palestine and how clear it is that what is happening is devastating but how some people still blindly support Israel. We agreed that people have lost a fundamental part of their humanity: a severance from the part of themselves that sees innocent people dying and is devastated and outraged. In America, we have the choice to participate in these colonial ideologies, push against them, or to not have an opinion (to “opt out"). It is an American privilege, the illusion of opting out of mass murder. None of us are separate from this conflict. Our tax dollars are being spent on the weapons that do the killing.
I am a white American. I have a large array of privileges that give me the illusions of choice. But at the end of the day, none of my choices have truly opted me out. At the end of the day, these severances have only handicapped me in other ways. I have gotten lost and missed appointments that I could have simply typed into Google Maps on a smartphone. I walked to urgent care by myself when I could have called my mom to pick me up if I didn’t move so far away. I carry the debt of my art degree and I will be making monthly payments from now until forever. I don’t have enough money to get out of an unhealthy living situation. How free am I? How much have I opted out? You can opt out and be crushed by the weight of what it means to be alone, still dependent and existent within the system you’ve supposedly broken out of. But if you opt in, do you get sucked in? What choice is there?
“To live in a city is to take part in and to propagate its impossible systems. To wake up. To go to work in the morning. It is also to take pleasure in those systems because, otherwise, who could repeat the same routines, year in, year out?” (290).
In Severance, the fevered mindlessly repeat patterns. Their condition is an identifiable sickness. Yet, at the same time, Ma also gestures to the fact that it is not too different from the condition that we all share. Our daily repetition, often mindless, trying to find pleasure. The condition one must adopt to survive in this world. The sickness is not individual, it is collective. The cure is not individual, it is collective.
My coworker is moving home across the country after moving away from his family many years ago. He told me about how stressful the process has been for him. I could relate a lot to what he had said. The unsustainability of not having family closeby. The feeling of - what am I proving? The unsustainable nature of being alone and the sometimes equally unsustainable nature of family. Every choice seems to be a choice to sever yourself from one thing or sever yourself from another. Either way, the choice is rarely to come together. The deeper we just get into becoming a mess of severed pieces.
I got a flip phone back in 2021 when I took a year off from college. At the time, I had fallen headfirst into a lot of the crushing realities that I had never really wanted to face. I was back home living with my family. I was coming to terms with my health, my sexuality, my lack of funds, my place in the world. I was cut off from my illusions of Making it Big and was faced with what Making it Small would entail. I was trying to shoulder the weight of the world that seemed to slowly be collapsing. I got a flip phone as an experiment, to see if I could do it, to see what it would feel like. I wanted to know what it would be like to have to figure things out on my own, to be in silence, to be present in the moment that I was in. I wanted to stop opting out of being alive.
About a month ago, I switched back to my smartphone on a whim. To see if I could, to see what it would feel like. It hasn’t solved anything. It hasn’t cured me. It has made my life easier in a lot of ways but harder in others. I miss the way I could walk around with a built-in excuse as to why I had not seen your email. I liked not having the pressure of every piece of knowledge at my constant disposal. I miss the way I felt I could walk around the world without trying to sever myself from it. I would walk in silence instead of trying to impose some soundtrack onto my reality, the soundtrack of the life I’d rather live.

I love your insights and agree that Jensen’s deal with Amazon seems to fit more like a actor’s holding deal. If I understand how those work, it’s where the studio pays the actor a salary for a year to hold them to try and find a role for him/her in a tv show or movie. Is that correct?
You’ve said Amazon doesn’t pay actors very well, so what is your guess to Jensen’s salary that Amazon is paying him? (Is that how he was able to afford a $10million mansion in Connecticut?)
Do those work like typical salaries (weekly/monthly) or because it was also tied to his production company, was that annual salary paid to him in an upfront sum with hopes the ackles would use the money to develop a project?
given the strike, the ackles cannot develop anything, do they have to refund any money back to amazon?
Thank you and yes, in typical holding deals the actor will receive a salary for at least one year while the studio finds a suitable project for them. Similarly, Jensen would get paid X amount of dollars for the term no matter what. He would get a check every month that comes out of the millions in his deal, this will go to pay for overhead of running Chaos Machine, including employee salaries., office space, etc. So any advanced money the Ackles received is their's to keep even if there are no project(s) for Amazon's original programming.
With that said, I highly doubt that the CMP received the typical starter $10 million for production overheads as the deal was to hire Jensen for his acting (and his fandom). Jensen may have received $1 million in retainer fee instead.
As for the Ackles' ~ investment in Connecticut, he's going to sell that house in a year or two to an Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust, then use the “sale” and the equity in the CT house to buy another house, just like he did with the Colorado house that was brought when he sold the Austin lake house (at half the market value) to the same trust. For example, if the Ackles put down at least 20% for the lake house, when the property’s value goes up by 20% (and it will), the Ackles have now made a 100% ROI and that’s before considering rents and tax write offs. Then when the houses like the lake house is sold for real in 10, 15, or 20 years, it will be sold at it's actual market price. It's a classic use of these types of trusts to make money by reaping the actual profit from the real sale and on top of the previous profit when the house was first sold into the trust.
