Emperor Mansa Musa (c. 1280 - 1337) a fourteenth-century emperor of the Mali Empire, is the medieval African ruler most known to the world outside Africa. His elaborate pilgrimage to the Muslim holy city of Mecca in 1324 introduced him to rulers in the Middle East and Europe. His leadership of Mali, a state which stretched across two thousand miles from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Chad and which included all or parts of the modern nations of Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad, ensured decades of peace and prosperity in Western Africa.

In 1312 he became emperor following the death of his predecessor. When he was crowned, he was given the name Mansa meaning king. MHP was knowledgeable in Arabic and was described as a Muslim traditionalist. He became the first Muslim ruler in West Africa to make the nearly four-thousand-mile journey to Mecca. Preparing for the expedition took years and involved the work of artisans in numerous towns and cities across Mali.

Accompanied by thousands of richly dressed servants and supporters he made generous donations to the poor and to charitable organizations as well as the rulers of the lands his entourage crossed. On his stop in Cairo, the Emperor gave out so much gold that he generated a brief decline in its value.

He brought Arab scholars, government bureaucrats, and architects. Among those who returned with him was the architect Ishaq El Teudjin who introduced advanced building techniques to Mali. He designed numerous buildings for the Emperor including a new palace named Madagou, the mosque at Gao, and the still-standing great mosque at Timbuktu. That mosque was named the Djinguereber.

His pilgrimage boosted Islamic education in Mali by adding mosques, libraries, and universities. The awareness of his other Islamic leaders brought increased commerce and scholars, poets, and artisans, making Timbuktu one of the leading cities in the Islamic world when the most advanced nations from Spain to central India were Muslim. Timbuktu was the center of Islamic Sub-Saharan Africa.

Just 50 years ago the Nigerian Naira was worth more than the South Korean Wan. It is difficult to conceive, given that now the Naira has plummetted 70 pecent against the dollar in 2024, Bloomberg Africa reported. Now fresh from a staye Visit to France, the Niherian president cum CIA asset has presented plans to privatize state refiners.  Now Old Order Hedge Funds can buy refineries at bargain basement prices and leverage it against the local population. It is a brilliant idea for sustained poverty.  The cratering Naira is not a new phenomena, rather it is a part of a long-term Monetary Policy plan to keep Nigerians in perpetual poverty.  In unvarnished terms, Nigerian leadership may not have been fully aware that their deal was a containment trap for their economic future.

Rarely is containment spoken about so openly as it is today in the case of China.  But containment is not new as we see with the history of Nigeria.  In 1912 the British introduced fiat through the West African Currency Board, its first attempt to contain and manage Nigerian assets. However, external financial containment seems oddly bizarre (without a completely zero-sum mindset), that any state has the right to crush or control the fortunes of another nation. Yet, daily such macabre conversations are had with cavalier disregard in newspapers, on business talk shows and in financial news reports.  Just recently the US levied more Tariffs against China, with the Sino-nation retaliating with bans on some precious rare earths,  Reuters reports.  Essentially, some old order actors have determined to team up against a developing econony to thwart its growth.

But the world has been rather lax in its understanding of the methods and lengths that old order architects will take to destabilize economies. And destabilization of economies and stated have never been more important than today in the face of declining empire. Just recently, the Jihadists Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham attacked Aleppo and toppled the government, joined shortly thereafter by the Israeli Regime invading Syria's Golan Heights, Al Jazeera reports.  The overthrow is a direct vilolation to UN Resolution 2254, one of many rules that fail to protect people and property.

Economic destabilization of states has been a mainstay in many quadrants of the world seeking development.  But in times of collapse, nation-states have been required to fall or remain in perpetual chaos.  So whether political or economic, many are unaware that they are making disasterous longterm deals. These deals often hamstring their economy and regions for decades, making scalable business an impossibility.  Entrepreneurs will not be flocking to Allepo or Haifa in the sustained chaos and carnage.

African states rank among the top tier of  those who assume their longtime adversaries will provide loans, helpful monetary policy and military back-up that transforms their nation into a thriving metropolis.   Unbeknownst to many, Africa has become a charade of sorts, with burgeoning cityscapes, paved roads and tons of hidden poverty and desperation.   Desperation that turns young men into cannon fodder for mercenary groups and rogue governments supplied externally with small cash and small favors. Many of the most celebrated cities and centres hide massive poverty behind the face of a paper thin bourgeoisie.  But this pattern repeats across the Global South.

African states have been the target of financial containment for decades.  Leaders smile and take photo ops with foreign ministers from adversarial former colonial powers. And oddly, despite all of the MOUs and agreements signed, nothing improves on the ground. And aptly, the first US president to visit Africa, fell asleep at a working meeting with heads of state in Angola,  Sky News reports.  It seems the information about financial containment never seems to reach the decision-making centers of African heads of state. 

But it would be naive to suppose that only African heads of state fall for old order financial gambits.  It's obvious too in Asia, where the bubble economy has been a go-to ploy by empire. The Plaza Accords offer a grand example, but it would not be the only time the empire has struck back against the East and West Asia. It is only lately that the masses have begun to understand just how completely their economies have been sold to decades of dysfunction.

While Kenyans were busy protesting a lopsided deal with the Adani Group, the US was busy chipping away at Bharat, its "regional Quad partner."  Perhaps its newest Non-Nato ally is also being intentionally chipped away too?  It was erroneously assumed Bharat would not be a threat to the old order. Unfortunately, Undia unwittingly triggered a Thucydides trap in its constant interactions.  It seems those that get closest are targetted the more viciously.   Few understand just how far down the old order has crashed, not understanding that they too may become an existential threat.  States like India would do well to be vigilant in uts financial, trade and military deals and especially where civil society meets. Color revolutions will do just as well, where economic containment fails.

Adani Group represents a specimen of  economic and business ingenuity that defies empire.  It and those similar are problematic in that they reveal the flaws or loopholes in the economic containment model.  They also stand as grim indicators of emperial decline for the zero-sum rationale. Global south successes defy the pre-established gambits and traps set against it by monetary policies, lopsided trade deals, and unequal currency arrangements. 

Financial success and autonomy is a staggering blow to the zero-sum congition of those who have bet on India's decline.  As in earlier analysis on colonialism and the Western dialectic revealled, the genius of indigenous populations to capitalize on unequal terms has always mystified the Rules Based Order traders.  It is why unequal exchange and violence has been necessary to maintain hegemony.  Just recently several gold mining operations like Canada's Barrick Gold and Australia's Resolute Mining have been tapped for $500 Million and more in fraud against developing states in Africa's Sahel, SABC News reports. The global south is poor because the "Broke World Order" has been stealing from it for decades!

Recently it was revealled by a new report that the US State Department funds 50 percent of the OCCRP Investigative journalism nonprofit's budget.  The revelation has come as the BJP Party has accused Washington of destabilization and a smear campaign against Bharat, via the NGO. USAID as its highest benefacyor leaves questions about the integrity of the organization much like the US National Endowment for Democracy has come under scrutiny for uts role in color revolutions. In recent times the US has supported Five-Eyes member, Canada, in its claims regarding the murder of a Khalistani separatists as well as level claims of its own.  It is doubtless now, that being a friend to the US is indeed fatal.

Perhaps it is because no one is really a friend of empire. Not even its functionaries are so well protected, as the chaos expands in old order agencies, governments and financial centers. A pandoras box has been opened that cannot be closed. Le Monde reports that the French government has collapsed.  This in the face of crushing debt, raging domestic discontent, international misteps and a president who evidently does not know how to fix any of it.  Bloomberg also reported that London is fast losing its place as a finacial cener as it continues to alienate capital and growth. Germany recently announced a new military aid package to Ukraine amid massive deindustrialization and a new report that indicates even its services sector is failing, Bloomberg L.P. reports.

These are times where all that was tried and true have been tried.  And now there is only a desperate survival at the core. Aleppo was toppled in less than two weeks.   AllAfrica News has reported that Mozambique has been under seige for months as militants and chaos overun a once peaceful southern African state.  Sadly, the culprits are all known in the region.  An open secret of lost opportunity and regional betrayal. Obviously these are precise destabilizations.  Often using the same rogue actors in Africa and the Middle East. 

Containment of finance has been critical, to maintain hegemony, as we see every effort exhausted against Russia.  As the old order strips away its financial apparatus, it becomes soberingly clear what it will take to wrest control from the Rules Based Order presiding happily unbothered over the genocide in Gaza and the financial mechanizations of the world.  It is not just the dollar and its obserd interest rates that are used to contain, but monetary policies, treaties, technology, trade deals and agreements that seek to shoehorn nations into financial ruin.

While the term, "decoupling" was a big buzzword in 2022 to contain China, it may well become the future of financial freedom and prosperity for those seeking to improve their fortunes.  Decoupling from weaponized systems, currencies, institutions and agreements meant to contain may be the future of the brave new world evolving. A world that spins ever mpre violent as the rules based order reveals its only real law, "He who has the gold (and the guns) makes the rules.

Nigeria: New IBA report focused on gender disparity in the legal profession is published A new report from the International Bar Association (IBA) Legal Policy & Research Unit (LPRU), focused on gender disparity in Nigeria's legal profession, reveals a dearth of women in senior positions in the judiciary with only 33 per cent occupying senior roles. Furthermore, the report reveals that, currently, only four out of 37 attorneys-general in the country are female.

According to the data accumulated for the 50:50 by 2030: A longitudinal study into gender disparity in law – NIGERIA RESULTS REPORT, women make up approximately 40 per cent of all lawyers in Nigeria. The country's public sector has the highest representation of women in senior positions, with 61 per cent of practitioners being female, followed by the corporate sector, with 55 per cent. Law firms have the second lowest number of women in senior roles (43 per cent), behind the judiciary (33 per cent). In England and Wales, 64 per cent of lawyers in the public sector are women, of which 57 per cent hold the most senior positions. Similarly, in Uganda, 57 per cent of lawyers in the public sector are female, with 62 per cent represented at a senior level. In the Spanish legal profession, 62 per cent of lawyers across the public sector are female, although in this jurisdiction, only 38 per cent are in the most senior positions. A similar trend is also observed in the Nigerian legal profession, with 68 per cent of female lawyers represented in the public sector and 61 per cent working in senior roles. In terms of initiatives, flexible working arrangements, and coaching and mentoring programmes for women are the most popular across all four jurisdictions. The nine-year global project, launched in 2021, was conceived by Almudena Arpón de Mendívil, IBA President and a partner at law firm Gómez-Acebo & Pombo in Madrid, Spain, who stated at its inception: 'Despite good intentions, despite the merits and talent of so many women, we still don't reach the most senior positions across the legal sector mainly due to discriminatory obstacles placed in our paths. This directly clashes with the principles defended by our profession. The legal sector cannot afford this contradiction and should lead by example. With the benefit of raised general awareness around discrimination, it is time for increased action. Obi slams Nnamani, seeks evidence of ethnic, religious bigotry’

The Presidential Candidate Of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has responded to allegations of ethno-religious bigotry against him by Senator Chimaroke Nnamani. Nnamani, had in a statement on Monday accused Obi of whipping up ethnic and religious sentiments in his quest to win the presidency. The ex-Enugu State Governor accused Obi of exploiting the nation’s fault lines to advance his personal cause. Nnamani, who lost his re-election bid to a candidate of the Labour Party last Saturday, accused Obi of other sundry infractions. In response, Obi in a letter addressed to Nnamani, a known acolyte of the President-Elect, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, said, the Enugu Senator must have mistaken him for someone else because the facts on ground do neither support nor justify his claims. Obi’s letter read: “Throughout these electioneering campaigns, you have consistently cast aspersions on my person, despite my always being respectful to you as an elder brother, and never publicly or privately commenting negatively about you. ���I am really surprised that you as my dear elder brother would go out of the way in the exercise of his fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in our law to go into saying what he knows is not true. “I find it very shocking that you had to label me as an ethnic and religious bigot and as one who indulges in a campaign of hatred. “In this instance, I like to state unequivocally that I am the direct opposite of what you said in your statement and what my campaigns have been. “I want to believe that my dear elder brother must have mistaken me for someone else because, in this campaign, I have consistently championed issues-based campaigns, and maintained so, even using illustrations and data to buttress my position, to the extent that I have been accused of using data wrongly and media houses had to create fact check desks just to monitor and address issues I raised during campaigns. “I have been on record to have insisted severally throughout the country that I should not be voted for based on any ethnic or religious link, but to be considered based on Character, Character, Capacity, and Compassion. Au Sénégal, les journaux consacrent leurs commentaires à la visite du Président de la République Macky Sall dans la ville de Thiès pour les raisons d’une tournée économique où il est accueilli par une liesse populaire. ‘’Bes Bi Le Jour’’ parle ainsi d’une alliance Macky-Idy sous le titre ‘’Mburu ak sow’’ (mélange lait caillé et du pain) pour parler de la relation entre le chef de l’Etat, Macky Sall et le président du Conseil économique social et environnemental (Cese), Idrissa Seck (surnommé Idy), un natif de cette ville, Thiès qui accueille le Président Sall. In my research I learned that the word comes from tribus in Latin. Its earliest usage was in the time of the Roman empire where there were three original tribes, but more were added to organize the voting system.  At first, tribe may have been related to ethnicity, but as more were added, it became about geographical location, rather than kinship.   Tribe was a territorial voting unit in the Roman state. I've seen the word used to talk about Celtic and Germanic histories. It also became associated with the Hebrew people of the Torah and Bible. You must have heard of the 12 Tribes of Israel. The connotations evolved, and the problems with it began when it got into the hands of anthropologists. (Ironically, I have a degree in anthropology and I think it's a fascinating discipline; Good thing my favorite anthro professor back in my university days wisely recommended that we understand the controversies around the term.)

Truth be told, it offends many people. Here's why:

#1 For European missionaries and explorers who went out to conquer people, the word "tribal" was synonymous to "savage" and "primitive." It's mainstream connotation is rooted in colonial-era racist ideology. The word immediately conjures stereotypical imagery of brown people with bones in their noses or naked warriors running around in a rainforest

I cringe whenever I see that word in a news article. And I see it so often in journalese. Stories about developing countries often feature phrases like tribal healer, tribal land, tribal conflict, tribesmen, tribal chief, tribal wear, tribal name, tribal rhythm. The word is so problematic, I don't even know where to begin. I will suggest this - get some education on its history.

The Myth of the Noble Savage

The word plays into a historic imagination that classifies indigenous people outside of Europe into two categories of savages: the noble savage and the brutal savage. That leads me to number two.

The bottom-line problem with the idea of tribe is that it is intellectually lazy.

#2 Societies are constantly changing. No matter where you go, you're bound to see it. Technology, the spread of ideas, education, globalization, all of these elements contribute to sociocultural changes. But the word "tribal" freezes societies in a primordial past (real or imagined) where people wore animal skins and ran with wolves. I think it's hard for many people in the Western world to accept that societies in Africa (in other developing regions around the world) are dynamic. It's hard for some to grasp concepts of modernity in such places.   Even the most remote, far flung communities are not the same today as they were just 20 years ago.

Doubts about the utility of the tribe as an analytical category have almost certainly arisen out of the rapid involvement of peoples, even in the remotest parts of the globe, in political, economic and sometimes direct social relationship with industrial nations. Westerners have romanticized certain ethnic groups, like the Maasai in eastern Africa, because they have this romantic idea that the Maasai people are living the exact same way as their ancestors did. Untouched by modernity. But that's simply not true. And where does this desperate need to have ethnic groups permanently living in primordial or precolonial states come from? Is the "primitive," noble savage look more marketable for tourism? That leads me to number three.

#3 The relentless attempt to cast Africans are primitive, unchanging people relates to another popular notion that the past, when there was no internet, airplanes or sliced bread, was more peaceful, more pure and less complicated than modern times. The problem with that is that it pushes an identity (based on a misconstrued premise) on other people. It's someone from the West saying I want the kind of African who lives in a thatch-roofed hut in a village in Niamey, not the African who lives in a  brick home in a Harare suburb.  Africans are constantly being defined by the Western world, submitting to the names and descriptions put upon them. In my favorite work by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun, the character Odenigbo says, "But my point is that the only authentic identity for the African is the tribe...I am Nigerian because a white man created Nigeria and gave me that identity. I am black because the white man constructed black to be as different as possible from his white. But I was Igbo before the white man came.” (I'll talk about Africans using the word tribe further down!).

#4 The word "tribal" distorts reality because it leads to misguided ideas of what is authentic and what is not. This is when a Westerner, looking at a picture of expensive cars parked at a chic hotel in Accra, says "this is not the real Africa." I hear the comment very often because there's this prevailing perception that the real Africa is "tribal." Its stick, bones, dirt and chiefs draped in leopard print. Anything outside of that, according to that line of thought, has been touched (contaminated, even) by the Western world, therefore is inauthentic. Again, it's that insistence on denying dynamism, that change happens. And that prerequisite applies to people, too. The African woman who graduated from Harvard Business School, works as a bank executive and wears Chanel suits is not a real African. The woman chopping firewood with a naked baby on her back is and gets bonus points for authenticity if the child has flies swarming around the face.

#4 For peoples who experienced oppression, suppression or marginalization from European colonizers or their descendants, the word "tribe" triggers memories of a traumatic past.  This is especially true of Native Americans, also called the First Nations. (I remember learning about the Trail of Tears in elementary school and feeling quite sad about it.)  Thousands of Native Americans were brutally uprooted from their ancestral lands when Europeans and their descendants decided to forcibly expand their presence in the Americas. Today, the U.S. government still officially uses the word "tribes" to refer to Native Americans, but I have read that they prefer to be called "nations" or "people."

#5 There's also this thing with numbers. British anthropologist and evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar, originator of the Dunbar's number theory, said that 500 - 1,500 people (who follow their ancestral culture, beliefs of unity, laws, and rights; are self-sufficient and have strong emotion towards their lands) can be classified as a one tribe. Those are pretty much the same numbers that other nineteenth century anthropologists used, defining a tribe as a human society made up of several bands. A band was a small, egalitarian, kin-based group of perhaps 10–50 people. So when you're looking at the large ethnic groups in Africa today, some numbering millions, they can't be described as tribes.

Tribe has no coherent meaning. What is a tribe? The Zulu in South Africa, whose name and common identity was forged by the creation of a powerful state less than two centuries ago, and who are a bigger group than French Canadians, are called a tribe. So are the !Kung hunter-gatherers of Botswana and Namibia, who number in the hundreds. The term is applied to Kenya's Maasai herders and Kikuyu farmers, and to members of these groups in cities and towns when they go there to live and work.

Tribe is used for millions of Yoruba in Nigeria and Benin, who share a language but have an eight-hundred year history of multiple and sometimes warring city-states, and of religious diversity even within the same extended families. Tribe is used for Hutu and Tutsi in the central African countries of Rwanda and Burundi. Yet the two societies (and regions within them) have different histories. And in each one, Hutu and Tutsi lived interspersed in the same territory. They spoke the same language, married each other, and shared virtually all aspects of culture. At no point in history could the distinction be defined by distinct territories, one of the key assumptions built into "tribe." ~Pambazuka News

Zambia is slightly larger than Texas. The country has approximately 10 million inhabitants and a rich cultural diversity. English is the official language, but Zambia also boasts 73 different indigenous languages. While there are many indigenous Zambian words that translate into "nation," "people," "clan," "language," "foreigner," "village" or "community," there are none that easily translate into "tribe." Sorting Zambians into a fixed number of "tribes" was a byproduct of British colonial rule over Northern Rhodesia (as Zambia was known prior to independence in 1964).

#6 In anthropological theories of social evolution, "tribe" is lower than "civilization." After studying early cultures in Central and South America, American neo-evolutionary cultural anthropologist Elman Rogers Service devised an influential categorization scheme for the political character of human social structures: band, tribe, chiefdom and state.

A band is the smallest unit of political organization, consisting of only a few families and no formal leadership positions. Tribes have larger populations but are organized around family ties and have fluid or shifting systems of temporary leadership. Chiefdoms are large political units in which the chief, who usually is determined by heredity, holds a formal position of power. States are the most complex form of political organization and are characterized by a central government that has a monopoly over legitimate uses of physical force, a sizeable bureaucracy, a system of formal laws, and a standing military force.

With this understanding, again, many of the large ethnic groups in Africa's modern nation states cannot be called tribes.

But... a lot of Africans use "tribe" to describe themselves. The word is taught in schools across African countries, because the secular educational system was largely created by Westerners. That's the basis of the ongoing  "decolonize education" campaign in South Africa. Check this out: When Africans learn English, they are often taught that "tribe" is the term that English-speakers will recognize. But what underlying meaning in their own languages are Africans translating when they say "tribe"? In English, writers often refer to the Zulu tribe, whereas in Zulu the word for the Zulu as a group is isizwe. Zulu linguists translate isizwe as "nation" or "people." Isizwe refers both to the multi-ethnic South African nation and to ethno-national peoples that form a part of the multi-ethnic nation. When Africans use the word "tribe" in general conversation, they do not draw on the negative connotations of primitivism the word has in Western countries.

But there has been a decades-long push by many African scholars and media professionals to get media outlets, textbooks and academia to stop using "tribe" and "tribal." Some have addressed their concerns to The New York Times, among other news publications.  Here's how Bill Keller, New York Times' Pulitzer Prize-winning executive editor from 2003 to 2011 responded:

"I get it. Anyone who uses the word "tribe" is a racist. [. . .] It's a tediously familiar mantra in the Western community of Africa scholars. In my experience, most Africans who live outside the comforts of academia (and who use the word "tribe" with shameless disregard for the political sensitivities of American academics) have more important concerns."

The logic here is, since the real Africans are using the word themselves, then what's the big deal? Well, for all the reasons I just presented and more. And recently we're seeing a wave of companies and organizations come out to announce that they will not longer use "tribe" and "tribal." The New York Times is now using "ethnic group" and "ethnic." (I have issues with ethnic. At a Walmart, I noticed that the aisle for hair products tailored to people of African descent was the "ethnic hair" aisle; that's literally what the sign said). These entities may have been motivated by political correctness or could be trying to save face. I don't know. I know that, what to do about the tribe/tribal word is a conversation that matters.
