Today, we especially pray for migrants, refugees, and those affected by wars, whose rights to education have been threatened, that they may be respected and protected.

Following the example of the Sacred Heart of Your Son, Jesus, help us to cultivate welcoming societies, promoting and integrating those who had to leave their support networks out of necessity.

Give us Your Spirit of boldness, so that our words and actions responsibly strengthen the safety of those we are called to embrace because of their inherent dignity. Amen.

Exile (A Rook Fic)

aka Rook de Riva and Viago fight after her fuck up and she begins her exile feat. a splash of Lucanis and Illario for funsies

This wasn’t a fight between a Crow and her Talon. 

It wasn’t a power struggle between an assassin and the man who molded her into a weapon. 

It was a fight between a girl and the man who raised her.

Viago pushed Hemlock into his office. She’d survived her stunt on the Antaam, survived eight (well, seven… actually six, Hemlock didn’t think Teia’d want her head) Talon’s calling for her to an example of what happens when a Crow royally fucks up long thought out plans. 

Viago circled his desk, palms flat on papers that had been abandoned when he’d been heard. When he had to get to Hemlock first. 

Hemlock assessed the blood stuck under her nails, the First Talon’s call for her head ringing in her ears. “Vi–” 

“Leave your leathers, your knives, you can have ten min–” 

“Wait.” Hemlock’s stomach dropped, her silver eyes blinking in confusion. “You can’t–”

“Hemlock.” Viago rose from the desk and stalked towards her, all precise and deadly Talon that he was. Hemlock could smell his cologne, the poison seeped into his clothes, if she truly focused, Hem could smell Teia’s lotion streaked through his hair. But Viago bore down on her, hovering, in a way that prickled the fear she hadn’t felt since before he’d found her. “Hemlock, look at me.”

If Hemlock could stand to look into his eyes, Hem would see the horrid mixture of frustration and anger and inkling of sadness hidden in his dark eyes. Instead she focused on his shoulder, on the floor, his desk. “Get away from me, Vi.” 

“Do not–”

And for her final mistake of the night, Hemlock slapped Viago, determined to put space between them again. The sound reverberated through the office. 

And in a snap, Viago was her Talon again. 

And Hemlock landed against the bookshelves so hard, the walls shook. 

Even dazed, Hemlock drew her knives, because surely he’d hate her more if she didn’t. But Viago dragged her up by her pinkish hair and kneed her in the stomach before dropping her again. 

Viago’s one mistake was turning his back as Teia entered the room. Hemlock rose, clenching her blades and was mere seconds away from the blade piercing Viago’s shoulder. But in a simple move, her Talon slammed the smaller girl against the desk. 

“Hemlock,” Teia admonished, slowly closing the office door. When Viago slammed Hem’s head against the corner of the desk. “Vi…”

Just kill me. Just kill me. Just–

And Viago pulled away. His eyes meeting as Hemlock’s formed unshed tears. Her breathing caught. 

Just go. Just go. Just go. 

Slowly, Hemlock slid from the desk and wiped her eyes before tears fell. Her pointed ears burned from anger and embarrassment. 

With horribly unsteady hands, Hemlock unclipped her cape. 

“Pack your–” 

But Hemlock threw her blades across the desk. 

“I’m clearly not meeting expectations anymore. And apparently dropping me into a canal knowing I can’t swim is both too easy and admitting failure, so…”

She removed her Crow equipment–the leathers, the belts, her gloves. Hemlock emptied her pockets of what little gold she carried with her, let her favorite charms fall to the floor (a snake arm band from Viago that reminded her of Emil, a bracelet from Teia when she made it from Fledgeling status, a small crystal cat from Vi that served as a good luck charm that clearly ran out of luck.), even let her staff fall backwards, uncaring if it broke.

Lastly, Hemlock plucked the vials of poison she’d been trained to dose herself with daily since she was thirteen and gently set it on the corner of his desk. 

With a pointed nod, Hemlock brushed by Teia and left the Cantori Diamond . 

Did she have a plan? No. 

Did she care? Kind of… Not really… No. 

Hemlock leapt across rooftops and weaved through the city until she was certain she was no longer being followed. She rested on a ledge against a wall of climbing vines close to Cafe Pietra. 

“Long night?” A horribly familiar voice emerged from the window above. When Hemlock peered up, Lucanis Dellamorte cocked his head before sipping his coffee. 

Illario Dellamorte peered down at her, leaning over with his own mug in his hands, eyes roaming her bare arms and weaponless form. “Catarina would be overjoyed to find you like this.”

Hemlock scoffed, rising and plucking away Illario’s coffee. She took a pointed sip, then thoughtfully considered Lucanis. 

I could get away from Illario… Lucanis, however… 

But in a moment of good fortune, or mercy, Lucanis looked away. 

And Hemlock threw the hot coffee in Illario’s face before jumping from the ledge and resuming her disappearing act. 

Catarina Dellamorte already wanted her dead, why not add to the list? She just needed to get out of the city. 

Cold and exhausted, with a pounding migraine, Hemlock passed through the city limits. Anxiety prickled her nerves, she never left Antiva unless for a contract or an event, she always had a plan, Viago’s carefully laid agenda laid out in front of her–kill, acquire, incapacitate. 

“Ready to go?” 

Hemlock blinked out of her thoughts to consider the Dwarves that emerged next to her. Varric and… Lace, if she remembered correctly? Antaam prisoners before her grand fuck up. 

“You cleaned up quickly,” Hemlock managed. She didn’t want to know about the aftermath, how much more she’d fucked up. 

“Ah, well, you should see the other guys.” Varric nodded to herself, “You have an idea of what you’re doing next? Happens that we do need a Crow.” 

“Ah, well…” Hemlock motioned to her weaponless form. 

“We can work out the specifics on the way.” Varric started off. “Let’s go, Kid.”

So I will do 4. A time Rook made a personal enemy (granted it's a bit of a childish "enemy" we're talking here):

The belltower chimes eleven times as Chiara's quick footsteps hit soundlessly across the rooftops, on the way to the hideout. Viago would kill her if he knew she's been sneaking out every other night for the past month, but as long as he doesn't catch her, she should be alright. He should be glad she's practicing her stealth, really. Then again, when is Viago ever glad about anything?

She hops over a low wall, skids down half a roof, catches herself on the dormer and jumps across the narrow alley below with practised ease. Another few steps and a quick climb up the side of the tower, carefully sticking her toes in the gaps between the bricks and she hops through the window into their sanctuary.

Illario is waiting for her, lounging on a few of the pillows they've collected in here to make the place more comfortable. He gives her a nod when she flops down next to him, uncharacteristically quiet as he hands her the ridiculously expensive bottle of wine he must've nicked from Caterina's collection. It's half-empty already.

"Rough day?" Chiara asks.

He shrugs. "Nothing new. Just reminded again that I'm the disappointing grandson."

"Bullshit," Chiara says. She takes a sip from the bottle. "Your grandmother has some stupid bias thing going on. You're gonna be a great Crow. Maybe, one day, you'll even be as good as me."

He chuckles at that, and Chiara smiles at the win, hands the bottle back to him.

"Besides," she continues. "I doubt your cousin's all that. I've never met the guy, but from what I've heard, he's all stab, no charm."

"He's... good at what he does," Illario says slowly. "I'm good at what I do. Caterina prefers Lucanis, it seems."

Chiara rolls her eyes. "Well that's stupid."

Illario nods, takes a sip of wine, and another. He's still upset, she can tell. It twists something in her gut to think about how Caterina is making him feel like he's lesser. It's not fair. She knows how hard he works for her approval, even if he would deny it if anyone said so.

"She wants Lucanis to be Talon after her," Illario says after a while.

"What?! You're not serious!"

"I heard her talking to Emil about it."

"Fuck that," Chiara says. "That's your title. Fuck Caterina and her bias, and, you know what? Fuck Lucanis, too. He can't take this from you, I won't let him."

Illario chuckles, puts the bottle down at his side and she squeaks as he pulls her into his lap. "What're you going to do about it, tiny de Riva?"

"I don't know yet," she says, "but I'll figure it out."

She means it, too. Illario deserves to be First Talon. And Lucanis? Well, if she ever does meet him, she'll make sure he knows it, too. There's no way she's going to let him take this from her best friend, not if she can help it.

Once Upon a Pixar (2026)

Hello. It's me, and this is the Pixar version of Once Upon a Studio called Once Upon a Pixar.

(The film opens with the headquarters at Pixar as the employees leave for the day.)

Pixar Intern: It's so incredible to think that George Lucas started Pixar back in 1979 until it was founded by Steve Jobs in 1986 40 years ago today. To think of all those talented animators and unforgettable characters who have been a part of the studio over the years.

Pete Docter: Yep. (as he and the intern turn around one last time) If the characters could talk to each other.

(Pete Docter and the intern leave as the door closes while the title comes up: "Once Upon a Pixar". The camera zooms into a photo picture of Woody, Jessie and Bullseye running on a record player. Woody glances back as everything seems quiet in the lobby.)

Woody: Psst! Atta. Princess Atta. You there?

(Princess Atta flies into the lobby and over to his picture.)

Woody: Is that it? They all gone?

Princess Atta: Yep, they're all gone.

Woody: Yee-haw! (he, Jessie and Bullseye leap out of the picture) Come on, Jessie, this is it.

Jessie: Let's get everyone. Yodel-ay-hee-hoo!

Joy: (gasps) There's the signal! All right, everyone! (she, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust jump out of their production cell) It's picture time!

Elio Silos: That's tonight?

Joy: That's now.

Ember Lumen: The 40-year group photo. (she and Wade jump out of their production cell as well) And the sun's going down. Come on, Wade, let's feel the burn!

Wade Ripple: Ooh, a fire pun. (chuckles) Got to like that.

(Suddenly, Arlo and Spot come out of their production cell as Wade gasps and goes against the wall.)

Arlo: (chuckles nervously) Sorry.

Woody: Picture time, gang!

Mei Lee: (chuckles) Okay, here we come!

(Mei Lee, Miriam, Abby, Priya and Tyler jump out of their production cell while they laugh.)

Abby: Wake up, everyone!

(The Oozma Kappa come out of their production cell as Squishy yells while Russell, Carl and Dug walk down the hallway.)

Russell: Whoa!

Dug: Awesome!

Russell: Oh, Mr. Lightyear! Get the folks upstairs!

Buzz Lightyear: Roger that, Russell. To infinity and beyond!

(Buzz Lightyear flies upstairs as Lightning McQueen drives happily down the hall with Mater.)

Mater: Yee-haw!

Merida: (jumps out of her production cell) It's picture time! (runs to the lobby) We're meeting at the lobby!

Flik: Okay! See you there!

(Miguel Rivera and Riley Andersen ride on Dim as Dim flies to the lobby.)

Miguel Rivera: (hollers)

(Francis gives a fun ride to Dash Parr.)

Dash Parr: Whoa! Higher! (laughs)

(Francis chuckles as Remy and Emile slide down the stairs as Luca Paguro lands on the floor and sighs as he catches Nemo.)

Nemo: Water.

Luca Paguro: (shudders and rushes to the counter)

P.T. Flea: No, no, no, there's no time for snacks!

Luca Paguro: Uh, Andy! A little help here?

Andy Davis: Oh, uh, let me see here. There we go, a nice bucket of water.

(Luca Paguro dunks Nemo to a bucket of water.)

Nemo: (grunts)

Linguini: (chuckles) Oh, waiter! There's a fish in the bucket! (laughs)

(Ernesto de la Cruz tries to get candy from the vending machine while he curses in Spanish as Mr. Incredible and Frozone walk down the hall.)

Mr. Incredible: Yikes! Do you think all the villains might catch up?

Frozone: Hmm. (freezes Syndrome in his frame) Not all.

Syndrome: (strains)

(Rex goes to the elevator with Imelda Rivera, Manticore, Ian, Barley and Laurel Lightfoot.)

Imelda Rivera: Going down?

Roz: Hold the elevator. I'm going to the lobby.

Rex: Huh? Oh, you've got to be joking.

(Joe Gardner hums to "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" while he draws Hector Rivera.)

Brook Ripple: Hey, black man. Shake a leg, will ya?

Joe Gardner: The leg won't make a difference, it's all in the wrist.

(Hector Rivera bursts out of the drawing as Joe Gardner shrieks in surprise.)

Hector Rivera: Ay! I haven't seen a fall like that since Spain. (fixes the chair) Oh! Much better.

(At the men's room, Hopper, 4*Town and Chef Skinner freshen up as Chef Skinner blows a kiss and chuckles. Suddenly, Tuck and Roll appear in front of his eyes, laughing, as Jessie opens the door.)

Jessie: Let's move it, gentlemen!

(While Lorenzo Paguro tries to free his wife Daniela Paguro from her picture, Giulia Marcovaldo walk with Buster, Mr. Mittens, Larry and Machivelli.)

Giulia Marcovaldo: Uh-huh. Meeting at the lobby. Don't eat the rats.

(Scud tries to eat Remy and Emile but Dante pops up and scares Scud away, thus saving the rats' lives. While Izzy and her team walk by, Mei Lee and her friends watch a cartoon on a TV.)

Izzy Hawthorne: Come on, everyone, you're gonna have nightmares.

(Zurg pops out of the TV and scares Mei Lee and her friends away, laughing. Back at the elevator, Roz makes it in time.)

Roz: Thanks very much for holding the elevator.

Rex: (groans)

Evelyn Deavor: I'm also going to the lobby as well.

Rex: Huh? Oh, come on!

(While M-O is being followed and annoyed by Dot, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson follow down the stairs, where Mr. Anderson is the one to drop his wallet and they laugh. Buster picks up the wallet and runs off with it.)

Mr. Anderson: Hey, Buster! Andy, get your dog!

(Woody follows up the stairs as he looks amused when he sees Underminer leading Colette Tatou with his hypnosis watch.)

Woody: Underminer? Underminer! You-- You stop that now, Underminer!

Rosie: Don't worry, Woody. (chuckles) I got this.

(Rosie hits Underminer offscreen unconsciously.)

Woody: Huh. (gasps) Wow.

(Woody looks up at photographs of John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich and Joe Ranft while he takes his hat off.)

Buzz Lightyear: Oh, Woody, where are you? We're at the lobby!

Woody: (chuckles) Got to go, but thanks. (puts his hat back on) On with the show.

(At the lobby, Woody rides on WALL-E with a fire extinguisher)

Woody: Yee-haw!

Mike Wazowski: Coast is clear, Sheriff.

Woody: Great! (holds the door open) Right this way, everybody.

(Sulley bumps into the door.)

Woody: Oh! Sulley, are you okay?

James P. Sullivan: (grunts) Never better, Eastwood. (accidentally trips the trash can)

Stinky Pete: I knew I'm surrounded by... (gets startled by Slim who rides on EVE) Idiots!

Slim: Tallyho! Whee! I'll show you the world! (laughs)

"Quite fancy, that your god is." A taunting whisper coming from the shadows sent chills down the young priest's spine. "Granite floors, gold cups, and free flowing tributes—"

"He's blessed the village this year— granted us a bountiful harvest and protected us from the harsh winter." Emilio rebutted.

"Is that what you tell yourself? That it is your god who did all this?" Abe's laugh reverberated all over the church, the sound bouncing along the walls that Emilio could swear it sounded like it came from all directions.

"Tell me, what does your god look like?" Abe came whispering, his voice an overlapping sound of every form he can take shape of.

Emilio's breath hitched in his throat. The words that cannot make it's way outside his lips felt like acid in his tongue.

MWW Artwork of the Day (5/25/23) Emile Friant (French, 1863-1932) Ombres portées [Cast Shadows](1891) Oil on canvas, 116 x 67 cm. Musée d'Orsay, Paris

In 1891, Friant presented four paintings at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. One of these was "Cast Shadows" which he was careful to place prominently when submitting his works. He had already depicted young couples, outdoors and indoors, always carefully building his composition around an interplay of looks and hands. He did the same in 1891 but in a much more radical way. The protagonists are placed in front of a wall. The frontal light source, directed upwards, highlights the hands and faces. Beneath the dark clothes, their bodies are reduced to silhouettes. This treatment recalls an extract from Pliny's Natural History recounting how painting was invented: "[Dibutade] was in love with a young man; when he left for foreign lands, she traced the shadow of his face, projected on to a wall by the light of a lantern".

🛶🥫👒 Five Run Away Together / Le Club des Cinq contre-attaque

Sadly, this is the one book for which I haven’t been able to find all the illustrations online, and which I don’t currently own a copy of. I’ll update this post if I ever get my hands on an original copy and find the full set of illustrations, but until then that's it.

I am very happy to report that I have now found a copy of the book with the original Baudouin illustrations. It was all the more frustrating not to have an original copy of this particular book because 1) both as a kid and now, this book was and remains one of my favourites, and 2) once upon a time, I DID own this elusive book: it was among those that belonged to my mum when she was a child; unfortunately at some point, I exchanged some of the FF books with a friend who lent me some of hers in return, the idea being that we would switch back all the books to their original owners after reading them, but time passed and we never made the switchback :(

I was so giddy to finally get my hands on a copy that I couldn’t resist including some of the black and white illustrations as well as the full-colour ones!

Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):

Julian, Dick and Anne arrive in Kirrin Cottage to stay with George for the holidays. They discover that Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin have hired a temporary cook because their regular help Joanna [Maria] had to take a few days off. The new cook, Mrs Stick [Mme Friol, later Mme Friot] is decidedly unfriendly and comes accompanied with her equally unfriendly husband, their nasty, tiresome son Edgar (Emile) and their mangy-looking dog Tinker [Théo], soon dubbed Stinker [Fléau (scourge)] by George.

(Julian uses a water hose to separate the two dogs who have been fighting, and can’t pass on the opportunity to douse Edgar)

The Five plan to spend time exploring Kirrin Island but their happiness is spoilt when Aunt Fanny falls ill and has to leave with Uncle Quentin to be treated in a far-off hospital.

(Julian [dark-haired, as he is always depicted by this illustrator] comforts an uncharacteristically weeping George, upset about her mother’s illness)

With George’s parents away, things soon escalate between the Kirrins and the Sticks, as Edgar keeps on mocking the kids in general and George in particular, and Mrs Stick delights in denying them tasty meals, only giving them just enough to get by. The kids retaliate as much as they can, but they don’t want to antagonise the Sticks too much while Aunt Fanny is still ill.

(A triumphant Julian and Timmy bring back the Sticks’ dinner after the Five have been denied anything but bread and cheese)

Mrs Stick repeatedly tries to poison George's dog Timmy, prompting George to hatch a secret plan to run away to Kirrin Island. When Julian catches her leaving, she decides to allow the other children to go with her.

The children settle on the island, reacquainting themselves with the place, but realise they can’t sleep in the ruined castle because the roof fell in. Unsure what to do, they decide to check out the wreck to see if it could make a decent sleeping place. It doesn’t, and they finally settle in a cosy little cave in the cliff.

(After settling in the cave, the kids spend a nice day relaxing and enjoying the island)

While exploring, the children find evidence of other people visiting the island and suspect smugglers. The discovery of a young girl's toys and clothes point to something sinister going on. They decide to set up a watch and hide their presence as much as possible. And indeed they soon discover that none other than the Sticks have come to the island and intend to stay!

The children discover the Sticks have imprisoned a young girl, Jennifer Armstrong, on the island and are holding her for ransom. After tormenting the Sticks into a retreat, the children rescue the girl and take her to the police, who are amazed to see the child "the whole country is looking for."

(The children make animal noises to frighten the Sticks in the echoing dungeons: Dick is the cow 🐮, Julian the sheep 🐑, and George the horse 🐴!)

The police accompany them back to the island in time to trap and arrest the Sticks. The kidnapped girl's father allows her to spend a week with her new friends on Kirrin Island.

I wanted to make a reference to the Wall-E Title cover

But I didn’t know how I would add the trash everywhere and Amphibia itself so I just decided to add in Trash cube towers instead

now I did Marc-E’s design a bit different to Wall-E to make her feel more distinct and unique in her colorless, lifeless environment that is

post apocalyptic Amphibia and I do apologize if they looked like they been traced over is because yeah they’re traced

but in my defense I am terrible at drawing humans & other creatures that are not Dinosaurs

Once Upon a Lamp - Group Photo Notes (Heartwarming)

Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank, Dicker, and Ego genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as evil as they were, are seen respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace, and GO-4 being here means the other robots didn’t hold any grudges against him for following AUTO’s orders.

Not only that, most of the main casts seem to be cramped together. On one side of the crowd, Ian and his family all together; and on the other, the Monsters, Inc. and WALL-E casts. Linguini carries Remy in one hand with his other rested on Colette, who holds Django and Emile, the living and dead Riveras are all together, as are the Lumens and Ripples with Ember and Wade bridging both families, the Bao cast, and the Inside Out emotions and human characters, albeit grouped separately, with the emotions being toward the front of the crowd and the humans toward the back, right in front of the Cars cast all standing side by side, and the main Toy Story cast stand front and center. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes.

Several of Pixar’s official couples are seen holding each other close. Special mention to Ember snuggling into Wade’s chest, WALL-E and EVE standing with their hands locked together, Greg and Manuel leaning their heads towards each other, Flik and Atta embraced together (same applies to John and Mary), and Maudie and the Clan Dingwall hunk sharing a loving look, with a special shout out to the already married couples showcasing their love.

The larger characters (like the Cars and Good Dinosaur casts) offering their bodies for the smaller characters or carrying the smaller characters (Sulley with Boo, Helen with Jack-Jack, Presto with Alec, Carl and Russell with Kevin’s babies, Elinor and Fergus with their triplet sons, Embarrassment with Envy, Massimo with Machiavelli, and Izzy with Sox) is nothing short of adorable.

The fact that Pixar didn’t leave out anything they made. Not just the highly recognizable movies, but the short films and SparkSports, no matter how overlooked they are, are included, too.

The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.

Marlin, Dory, and Nemo peeking out from above the water of the coffee pot carried by Hank is nothing short of cute.

Mater can’t help but have the biggest grateful smile on his face, as if he’s aware of the hatred he’s gotten over the years and is happy to be a part of a photo celebrating a milestone. In fact, he seems to be on the verge of tears, which McQueen and Cruz notice, prompting McQueen to give Mater a tire bump to the wheel well.

Mr. B. cracks a little smile at the camera, putting his stoic exterior aside for a moment.

Day and Night sing and smile with one arm around the other, still having put their differences aside after the radio tower message.

Bambino looks up at his papà and nonno being genuinely happy, having never gone back to arguing. Similarly, Sanjay and his father look at each other with clear signs that their relationship hasn’t regressed to being too emotionally distant.

The chiefs of the clans Macintosh, MacGuffin, and Dingwall embracing their sons is certainly a touching sight. Lord MacGuffin patting his son on the back like he did at the presentation of the suitors, especially.

Being stationary volcanoes, Uku and Lele are unable to leave their photo. Thankfully, they have Thunderclap to hold it so they can be in the group picture.

Joy and Sadness hold hands together and give each other a gentle look. Also, Anxiety actually looks calm for once, and Ennui also doesn’t shy away from smiling.

Riley, Grace, and Bree all carry Knick together while Riley’s parents carry the Miami and Florida knick knacks, Val and the Fire Hawks carry the Egypt, Jamaica, Palm Springs, Israel, and Death Valley knick knacks, and Coach Roberts carries Sunny Atlantis in her fish bowl.

Spot stays on Arlo’s back while looking at the camera.

While not in her panda form, Mei has her red hair, panda ears, and panda tail, showing that she never stopped embracing her panda.

The cast of Lightyear stand toward the back of the crowd, giving the impression that they’re fully aware of their box office bomb and are letting their more successful friends be in front of them.

Izzy gives Sox a neck scratch.

Alisha and Kiko’s inclusion also counts due to their backlash following the movie’s release.

After everyone finishes singing, Forky, Heimlich, the gawky bird, Boo, Jack-Jack, Stu, WALL-E, one of the triplets, and Embarrassment wave at the camera.
