316: Toto Bissainthe // Chante Haïti
Tumblr media
Chante Haïti Toto Bissainthe 1977, Arion
“These songs are mostly slave songs taken from the Vodou cult. They speak of the quotidian, of the suffering of exile, and the desire of Africa, not as a geographical place but as a mythical land of freedom. They express their resistance and their refusal: resistance to the colonizer, refusal of his politics, of his religion, of his culture, of his language.”
So begins Toto Bissainthe’s statement on the rear of Chante Haïti, her 1977 collaboration with a small combo of Antillean folk and French jazz musicians: vocalists Marie-Claude Benoît and Mariann Mathéus; percussionists Akonio Dolo and Mino Cinélu (Miles Davis, Weather Report, Gong); Patrice Cinélu on acoustic guitar; and Beb Guérin on the double bass. The songs indeed fuse the Vodou ritual of her native Haiti with the European avant garde sounds of her adopted milieu of Paris, where she had moved to pursue acting and found herself a de facto exile due to the political situation back home. Bissainthe had become a prominent figure in the French theatre, performing in new plays by Beckett and Genet and co-founding Les Griots, France’s first Black theatre company; by the late ‘70s, she was an acclaimed recording artist to boot. Her accomplishments made her a prominent figure in the Haitian diaspora and her activist streak is apparent throughout Chante Haïti, explicitly linking the grief and yearning for liberation in these traditional ceremonials with the country’s contemporary struggles.
Like many songs on the album, the Creole words of opener “Soley danmbalab” mourn the people's estrangement from Mother Africa, a crossing which can neither be reversed or repeated. It begins like a field recording, Bissainthe’s soulful, Miriam Makeba-esque voice set to a chorus of rattles and bells and gurgling masculine whispers. As the song develops, her melody wends like a stream through the dense jungle of percussion, dissonant bass, and counterpoint chanting. Eventually, Mino Cinélu’s arrangement becomes more free, the male chorus imploring the Oungan (a male Vodou priest) to intercede with the creator on the people’s behalf as the tune breaks down into an increasingly abstract bass and drum interplay, while the three female singers exchange birdlike vocal improvisations.
youtube
“Ibo Ogoun (Variations)” is even wilder, evoking a trance ritual, the spirits speaking in many tongues through the celebrants as they seek to summon Ogun, God of Iron and War, to lead the battle of liberation. One of the male percussionists times his tanbou beat so that it hits just as he sings certain notes, creating the illusion that he voice has suddenly lurched down an octave for a moment, almost like a DJ freaking a vocal sample. Bissainthe, Mathéus, and Benoît match the intense drumming with some crazy syncopations, sometimes talking, sometimes hissing and whispering, sometimes wailing and ululating.
Most of the album takes on a more meditative tact, anchored by Guérin’s plangent double bass. On the smoky “Papadanbalab,” an entreaty to the serpent creator Damballa to bear witness to the penury of his people, Bissainthe sways over a slinky jazz bass line, Patrice Cinélu adding mellow acoustic fusion licks. The song seems like a brief stopover in a Parisian club. But even the less overtly intense tracks pack plenty of musical interest. “Lamize pa dous” has this hypnotic rhythm that sounds exactly like a micro house beat—in fact, the first thing it made me think of was Ricardo Villalobos’ Alcachofa, or Animal Collective at their campfire ravingest. The song is about the moment of surrender to death, the winnowing of time represented by water encroaching on all sides, the realization too late that “we spend our lives trying to fill the sea with stones.”
Listening to a record like this, especially in light of Bissainthe’s note on the back excoriating the colonialist ethnographer who reduces Haitian folklore to “excitement and violence,” requires at least a smidgen of awareness from the white listener that Chante Haïti is not intended for them. The traditions it engages with are of deep spiritual significance to many Haitians, both in the ‘70s and today. But for those inside and outside the culture who are willing to approach it with respect, Chante Haïti is a fascinating fusion of Antillean and European musics, and a peek into a profound and secret history.

Although I did a regrettably poor job of documenting the first stage of my Test of Time challenge, I still had some good stories, and I'd like to put them up here if only for my own record-keeping.
So, introducing my founders...
Tumblr media
Min and Ala Berry. When I was naming them, I was going down a list of deities, without much additional info, or (and this is important) any pictures. I was just looking for short names that were not super-recognizable, so the founders weren't, like, Zeus and Hera. Min was an ancient Egyptian deity, and that link is NSFW, even though it is Wikipedia, because Min is an Egyptian fertility deity. A... firm, one might say tumescent, deity. This turned out to be way more appropriate for Min Berry than I ever anticipated. Min and Ala had 11 children, winning the breeding competition for Gen 1, and Min fathered two more children with different women after Ala's passing. No one else even came close to his tally.
Tumblr media
Ogun and Oya Burn. These two dour souls were both knowledge sims, so I guess the scowls are their acknowledgement of a future without a bookcase.
Tumblr media
Esus and Brigid Moss. I've played enough Pleasantview that you'd think I'd know better than to put a redheaded man with a black-haired woman and expect their marriage to be happy and trouble-free. But I'll get to that.
Tumblr media
Limat and Lir Pond. They were initially a very happy couple - every time I went to the bathing springs they were woohooing in one of the hot springs - but things went very wrong for them later in the challenge. I'll get to that, too.
Tumblr media
Geb and Nut Stone. The two most-recognizable deity namesakes in the challenge - at least to me, but I was an Egyptaboo as a child - these two had ten children and a very interesting story in the end. But all of that is for my next post.

Baron Samedi vs. Papa Gede - Revisited
Many moons ago, I wrote this opinion piece regarding the differences between Baron Samedi and Papa Gede. I have since attempted to research this further, as it is necessary I revisit this subject.
It appears that many Westerners like myself come to believe that Baron Samedi and Papa Gede are one in the same, due to a comment that was made by Maya Deren in Divine Horsemen. However, if you look to the back of the book, Deren cites many other sources, including the American novelist Harold Courlander.
Below are quotes from Courlander’s (1944) “Gods of the Haitian Mountains”:
“…Some Haitians feel that BARON SAMEDI and GEDE NIMBO are the same…” (p. 356)
“...In some parts of Haiti GEDE NIMBO is thought to be identical with BARON SAMEDI…” (pp. 361-362)
SOURCE: Courlander, Harold. “Gods of the Haitian Mountains.” The Journal of Negro History, vol. 29, no. 3, 1944, pp. 339–72. JSTOR, https://doi.org/10.2307/2714821. Accessed 22 Dec. 2024.
Similar comments are made in Courlander’s (1960) The Drum and the Hoe:
“...Gede Nimbo, also known as Baron Samedi…” (p. 56)
“...In some parts of Haiti, Gede is thought to be identical with Baron Samedi…” (p. 323)
“...They are so closely identified that some Haitians feel that Baron Samedi is merely another name for Gede Nimbo…” (p. 323)
SOURCE: Courlander, Harold. The Drum and the Hoe: Life and Lore of the Haitian People. United States, University of California Press, 1960. Retrieved from: https://archive.org/details/drumhoe0000unse/mode/2up
Further context is provided in Courlander’s (1973) Haiti Singing:
“Gede Nimbo , also known as Baron Samedi. (Rada loa.) Athough Gede is inferior to Baron la Croix, he is still one of the most important of all the family. In fact, he is one of the most powerful deities of the whole Haitian pantheon. He guards the cemetery and protects the graves, especially those of children. But Gede Nimbo is not simply another loa, he is sometimes a personification of death itself. He is always spoken of as “dressed all in black.” While people may give “pitit lament” or small money to the other loa, they pay heavily to Gede Nimbo. He is not pleasant when aroused. (In Mirebalais, Dr. Herskovits received the impression that Gede Nimbo and Baron Samedi are different loa. In the south they are considered the same.) Dr. Elsie Clews Parsons, who visited the south coast of Haiti on a folk tale collecting trip some years ago, recorded the following impressions of Gede: “He is like Ogun [Ogoun], but ‘worse,’ he is a grande diable. He makes all kinds of motions to make you laugh, but you must not laugh at him, for if you do, he makes you ‘stop laughing,’ which means inversely that he makes you go on laughing forever against your will. Anything you touch, he takes and never returns, and you have to give him more and more. He smokes cigarettes, not cigars. He wears a coat and a hat, and carries a stick. He can make himself short or tall, ‘as tall as a mast.’ ” (p. 34)
SOURCE: Courlander, Harold. Haiti Singing. United States, Cooper Square Publishers, 1973. Originally published in 1939. Retrieved from: https://archive.org/details/isbn_0815404611/page/34/mode/1up
Although Courlander claims that Gede Nimbo and Baron Samedi are considered the same in Southern Haiti, this is contradicted by the source he provides.
Where George Simpson studied Vodou in Northern Haiti, Dr. Elsie Clews Parsons reported his observations from “a recent folk-tale collecting trip to the south coast of Hayti”. He clearly differentiates between Baron Samedi and Gede Nimbo, like so:
"On this higglety pigglety pantheon my notes read: Loi Gede or Gede-nibo talks through his nose (i.e. when he takes possession of any one). He eats only casaba and peppers and herring. He "ties his jaw" just like the dead, with cotton in the nostrils, for he is «master of the cemetery» mait' e cimetière). He is the "head loi". At the capital, Port-au-Prince, "most people have the loi Gede..." His papa loi (devotee) wears habitually (?) a white handkerchief around the head…." (p. 158)
“Loi Ba-un-Samedi (? gives or for Saturday). He is like Ogun, but "worse", he is a grande diable. He makes all kinds of motions to make you laugh, but you must not laugh at him, for if you do, he makes you "stop laughing", which means inversely that he makes you go on laughing forever against your will. Anything you touch, he takes and never returns, and you have to give him more and more. He smokes cigarettes, not cigars. He wears a coat and hat, and carries a stick. He can make himself short or tall, "as tall as a mast…."” (p. 162)
SOURCE: PARSONS, Elsie Clews. “SPIRIT CULT IN HAYTI.” Journal de La Société Des Américanistes, vol. 20, 1928, pp. 157–79. JSTOR, http://www.jstor.org/stable/24720068. Accessed 22 Dec. 2024.
(as a side-note, I fucking love how he uses the phrase “higglety pigglety pantheon”)
Did Courlander make a mistake, or did he correctly observe a regional difference in Haiti?
When reporting his observations in Haiti, Melville Herskovits supplied three different lists of loa from three different sources. He noted the contradictions between the lists, like so:
"Some of the inconsistencies and individual variations in the naming of the gods as demonstrated in these lists may be specified. Outstanding are the differences found in the manner of naming a single god, as when General Ogun is called Ogun Gallone or Papa Ogun, or when Aizan Damballa is listed as two loa, Mait' Damballa and Mait' Aizan..."
SOURCE: Herskovits, Melville Jean. Life in a Haitian Valley. New York, Octagon Books Inc., 1964. pp. 309-319. Retrieved from: https://archive.org/details/lifeinhaitianval0000hers/page/308/mode/2up
The point is, there are legitimate regional differences in Haiti. As a consequence of this, two different credible sources can give you very different answers to questions, including the manner in which certain loa are classified.
With this in mind, it was improper of me to make such accusations against Deren, and Hurston, with this degree of uncertainty. It is possible they were correct; without a time machine, it is impossible to say.
At that, this could potentially explain the representation of Baron Samedi in New Orleans - the “revitalization” may have been influenced by someone(s) from a region of Haiti where Baron Samedi was (is?) equated with Gede Nibo.

Nigeria's security landscape has deteriorated significantly, with the rise of diverse violent groups exploiting the state's weakened control. From July 2023 to June 2024 under President Bola Tinubu's watch, the country witnessed an alarming surge in kidnapping incidents, driven by various actors including Boko Haram, armed gangs, and secessionist groups. Amid these threats, kidnap-for-ransom has emerged as a pervasive issue, affecting nearly every region of Nigeria. In relation to the Zhongshan conflict, a US court makes grave accusations against the Nigerian police and Ogun government
Tumblr media
Serious charges alleging violations of human rights against officials of Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Co. Limited have been brought against the Nigerian police and the government of Ogun State by a U.S. court. According to court records, the executives were beaten, refused food and drink, and taken into custody at gunpoint. Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Ltd. (Appellee) v. Federal Republic of Nigeria (Appellant) US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit released these conclusions. The case was determined on August 9, 2024, after it was debated on April 22, 2024. Court records also show that threats were made against Chinese company leaders. The issue has to do with the dispute surrounding the foreign seizure of Nigeria's presidential aircraft. According to Judge Millett's court ruling, these incidents took place when Ogun State attempted to end its agreements with Zhongshan over the creation of a free trade zone within the state. Zhongshan's parent firm was hired by the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone firm in 2010 to create an industrial park inside the free trade zone. Tenants would be able to use the factories that Zhongshan's parent firm developed and constructed in the park. But in the first half of 2016, Ogun State called off their contracts with Zhongshan, claiming that Zhongshan had deceived Ogun and that another Chinese business should have been awarded Zhongshan's portion of the free trade zone. According to court records, “As tensions escalated, an Ogun official texted a Zhongshan executive advising him to ‘leave peacefully’ to avoid ‘forceful removal, complications, and possible prosecution.’” Following that, Ogun issued arrest warrants for two executives from Zhongshan, alleging "criminal breach of trust." Nigerian federal police detained one executive for 10 days, beating him, depriving him of food and water, and questioning him about the location of the other executive. The arrest took place at gunpoint. The state's earlier negotiations with Zhongshan were overturned, according to Ogun State's Special Advisor on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, who made this announcement on Thursday. According to Akinmade, Ogun State was notified that Zhongshan had temporarily attached three government-owned aircraft in Nigeria to its property in France. This action was taken in response to two court orders from Paris dated March 7, 2024, and August 12, 2024, which were obtained without informing Ogun State, the Federal Government of Nigeria, or their legal representatives. He said that none of Zhongshan's attempts to seize assets owned by Nigerians overseas had succeeded in recouping money from Nigeria. He continued by saying that the airplanes in question are exempt from attachment under French and international law because they are only used for sovereign reasons. Read the full article

Happy New Calendar Year!!! It is 10066 of the Oodua Yoruba Calendar-–-KỌ́JỌ́DÁ
‘Ki Ọ́JỌ́ DÁ: Meaning; May The Day Be Clear or Foreseen; is the name of Yórúbà Calendar. Akù Odùn Tìtún o! Eyìn Omo Yórubà nìlè lókó, léyín ódì! It is 10,066th of the Yoruba Calendar (Kojoda, which means “May The Day Be Foreseen”). The New Year begins on June 3rd (Okodu 3) of the Gregorian Calendar. This means, 10,066th year of recorded Yoruba history since the establishment of the calendar according to Scholars by Orunmila. However we used to have 4 days/week, but later reconciled it with the Gregorian calendar 7days/week (Note). Before the western Gregorian calendar, Yorubas used a lunar calendar. The Yoruba year begins June 3 of this year to June 2nd the following year. The traditional calendar had a 4 day week, 7 week month, and 12 month year. The Yoruba calendar (Kojoda) has a year beginning on the last moon of May or first moon of June of the Gregorian calendar, and an era of 8042 BC. The new year coincides with the Ifá festival. It started about 10,066th years ago, when Ife-Oodaye was populated by the Orishas. It was the work of Orunmila and Obatala. The traditional Yoruba week has four days. The four days that are dedicated to the Orisa go as follow: Day 1 is dedicated to Obatala (Sopanna, Iyaami, and the Egungun) Day 2 is dedicated to Orunmila (Esu, Ifá and Osun). Day 3 is dedicated to Ogun (Osoosi). Day 4 is dedicated to Sango (Oya) To reconcile with the Gregorian calendar, Yoruba people also measure time in seven days a week and four weeks a month. The four-day calendar was dedicated to the Orisas and the seven-day calendar is for doing business. The seven days are: Ojo-Aiku (Sunday), Ojo-Aje (Monday), Ojo-Ishegun (Tuesday), Ojo-Riru (Wednesday), Ojo-Bo/Alamisi (Thursday), Ojo-Eti (Friday) and Ojo-Abameta (Saturday). Oṡu in Yoruba calendar. By • Olalekan Fagbade Governor’s absence, strategy to avoid giving report of one-year stewardship – APC alleges The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has condemned the continuous absence of the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, in the state Government House, describing it as a strategy to avoid giving report of his one-year stewardship. It will be recalled that the governor's spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, had in a recent statement claimed that his principal has embarked on a working vacation to Europe and Asia. Mr Rasheed had said that the governor's trip was to finalise partnership deals with investors and development partners. However, the Osun APC, in a statement signed by the Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal on Sunday, condemned Mr Rasheed's claim, saying it is full of contradictions criminally packaged to hide some information. The party claimed that the governor, contrary to Rasheed's statement, has been holidaying in the United States of America in the last two weeks. It said: “Of course, this is a mere prelude to a foundation-laying for excuses that Governor Adeleke would not be physically present in the state for the celebration of his one-year administration coming up tomorrow. “It was reliably gathered that a recorded statement from the governor would be played for the people of the state in lieu of his physical presence tomorrow. “No one can begrudge another for falling sick or nursing an ailment as such is beyond the control of any human being but God Almighty, however, it beholds on those who are holding the people’s mandate in trust to always tell the truth and stand by the truth. “We know very well that Governor Adeleke has absconded from the state so he would not be able to give due account of his stewardship to the people of the state. “Since November 2022, when he came on board, Governor Adeleke has run the state aground with his sheer incompetence, lack of proper education and his zero administrative acumen. “He is afraid to disclose to Osun people how he has mismanaged over N130 billion in revenue accrued to his government in the last one year. “He is afraid to tell them how he has allocated in the supplementary budget over N10 billion for his food, entertainment and office use while parents of UNIOSUN students are struggling to pay increased school fees his regime forced on them to pay. “Governor Adeleke is ashamed to face the Osun people that one year after, his promise of making Osun another Dubai is a fluke. “Adeleke is distraught to face Osun people because he has failed to provide palliative for them in the face of economic hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and the N9billion he collected from the Federal Government, his demonic government has looted it. “Adeleke is afraid to face the anger of Osun people that while a serious state like Ogun is investing in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, which is capable of making the cost of transportation cheaper, Adeleke in a ploy to line his pocket, is putting Osun money in unsustainable diesel-propelled vehicles purchased over 10 years ago.” The Osun APC also claimed that Adeleke would be laying a dangerous precedent with his absence from the first anniversary of his administration on Monday, as it would be the first time that such would happen in the history of the creation of the state.

Ashley : So, this is the Obversatory, huh? This place looks incredibly big.
Kimial Diehl : Totally looks amazing!
Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupre : Neat place!
Penny Crygor : So, what are the odds? This is a marvelous place! Not too far from where we are.
Grim (Metal Sonic) : So, you reside on this place that orbited around Mario's world for 100 years, and they say they call you the watcher of the stars, correct?
Rosalina : Well, certainly. I helped Mario on his adventures on saving the galaxy and gathered the stars from the many galaxies he traveled across to save his world from Bowser. He tried to conquer the galaxy by making it his own empire.
Ashley : Then what did you say to him?
Rosalina : Well...
*Flashback*
Bowser : Come on, Rosalina! Please, I really need a Galaxy for my own! I really, really, need one and my son needs it too! Could you really do that for me, Rosalina! Pretty please?!
Rosalina : [Thinking] Hmmm...[determined] How about, no. (The Lumas knocks Bowser and Jr off the Obversatory, causing a Smash K.O)
Master Hand/Announcer : GAME!
*Flashback Ends*
Ashley : So, he started that invasion of interrupting the star festival on Mario, or our world that he tried to conquer it all, but luckily, Mario stopped his plans and the Galaxy is saved. So any chances about saving a world like this?
Grim (Metal Sonic) : Earth's in crisis, and the real world is being threatened by the evil forces, used as a diversion by Demon Vibe. And we need your help on saving it!
Kimial Diehl : Yeah! Because that Kishin named Asura is a phony and Demon Vibe!
[RECORD SCRATCH]
Rosalina : Wait a minute. Hold the phone. Did you say Demon Vibe?
Ashley : Well, that's his name.
[Showdown - Yutaka Minobe]
Rosalina : As in...Demon Vibe the Heartless?!
Penny Crygor : Why is that a problem?
Rosalina : I know Demon Vibe. He's that big bad that wanted to rule everything that wants to conquer or destroy the world by swallowing it in darkness. Back in the KH Universe not far from from Smash, Demon Vibe was the primordial heartless to ever obtain the powers by creating the three eye symbols, he plans to create a universe of his own, with the help of a person named Rei Hino. However, when he tried to consume the planet in his universe, he was stopped by the family called the Kusakabe, and banished suffering and wickedness called the Shadow Realm. And Shinra knew that the Evangelist that tried to destroy his world was a creation of Demon Vibe himself. A decoy of his own.
222
Ashley : You mean the Evangelist itself was a decoy, and the Ohkuboverse has been--
Kimial Diehl : --a facade?! Why would a princess knew exactly the truth and is that a problem for all of that matters. Can you think of that, for myself?
Rosalina : Hardly I can. Bet you think that putting the world in despair would be a great idea that will costs our lives?
Kimial Diehl : Not exactly the best kind.
Rosalina : Not mine. That would be Sephiroth.
Kimial Diehl : We'll do respect that we are in debt of saving our world. Not to mention it at least.
??? : Aha! I found you two! Just where have you girls been?
Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupre : Hold the phone. Is that...
[Strange Guys - Hideaki Kobayashi]
Kimial Diehl : Ox Ford. That bald headed weirdo.
Henry : Where would you go from a place like this?
Kilik Rung : So, Kimial. You've been friends with another witch named Ashley, I presume.
Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupre : Kilik!
Ashley : So, you guys are her friends from that place over there? I see. You must be so very clever that you can really manage to be friends with a faker like Maka Albarn. Hmm? [Notices something] Hold on. You're...
[Leonard's Past - Masamichi Amano]
Ashley : Descendant of the World Heroes Force member... Ogun Montgomery. [A vision of Ogun is shown] Just what are...
[flashing images of Ogun brutally killed by Homura Akemi (disguised by the Time Eater)]
Ashley : (in mind) Just what are your demands of living up to the legacy? Now I finally understand on where the pieces coming together. Can Kimial might be a descendant of someone that I've know before?
Kimial Diehl : Hey, Ashley, what's the matter?
Ashley : Oh, umm, I just wandering that if my breathren would be thinking that if someone was the true mother of witches in the Ohkuboverse 1000 years ago. Do you know who could that be?
Kimial Diehl : Well, come to think of it. I do know who the true mother of witches. It was Inca Kas...
Captain Toad : Hey, Princess Rosalina! You got a visitor from earth and he's coming to the Obversatory, immediately!
