“🍼” Elsie and Mary
@unyieldingvalxr (Elsie Marion)
Hurried footsteps, almost running toward her, distract Mary and she looks up to see Elsie making her way forward at a steady clip. The girl has something in her arms, a bundle that she holds close to her chest as if the contents are worth their weight in gold. Setting her work aside, Mary stands and hurries to join Elsie on the path. “What in the world do you have…” Mary bites back a gasp when the younger woman shifts her arms enough that the baby’s face emerges. “Oh,” she pressed her hands against her mouth. “Where did you find him? Or her?” She glances at Elsie worriedly as she speaks. There are many places around here that a child could be dropped… but who would be so cruel as to abandon a baby to the elements this close to winter? Given that there is a war on though, perhaps the parents did not have any choice. Well… she does want a sibling for Thomas. If Abraham will not oblige her request, she sees no harm in adopting.
“Come up to the house, both of you.” She decides after a moment. “We’ll get the baby warmed up, and settled. Then I’ll start asking around town, and see if I can find out where the little one might have come from, and if anyone claims them. If not, I think I can persuade Abraham into giving the child a home.” Or she will simply adopt the child herself, and let Abraham work out the pieces as he bothers to notice them. He has wrecked enough chaos on their home by leaving her in the dark about serious situations… it seems only appropriate that she give him a taste of his own medicine. And another dear little child in their home can only be a blessing, unlike some of the changes he has brought about during their admittedly rocky marriage. At least taking an orphan in from the cold is unlikely to get anyone hanged, unlike hiding spy equipment under the bedroom floor and in their root cellar.

I am So Totally Capable of being normal about Elsie and Rajan, but I’m so scared because now I’m emotionally invested and @quiddie is Out For Blood.
I can’t take another Marion and Jean. Aabria, I’d ask you to have mercy but I know it’s far too late.
Good luck all.

Ciara held up her hands, knowing she looked absolutely ragged after her journey to her father’s camp. Francis’s elegant oldest daughter making the long trip through the swamps to Snow’s Island is a clear clue that something has gone horribly wrong. “Not since I left Pond Bluff—but it was simple enough for me to pass through what checkpoints I came across. I simply claimed that I needed to reach my sick grandmother urgently because she had been cut off from help due to the war. Most soldiers will not hold up a woman on a mission of mercy like that—they have grandmothers and people they love as well.”
Ciara reaches out to take Elsie’s hands, in a bid to hold her in place then to comfort her. “We had to leave Pond Bluff. Tarleton and the British were getting far, far too close. Murphy is taking Mother to Aunt Noreen’s in Fredericksburg. He wanted me to come with them, and then he would double-back to tell you all what happened. I was worried that would take too much time, however. Therefore, I volunteered to come tell you myself.” She glances around the small camp before frowning. “Are Father and Patrick here? I need to tell them as soon as possible.” Ciara had no idea how long she would stay in the camp after that. It would have to be a day or so, but she was a wise enough woman to know that she had no place here. She had a good many skills, an excellent baker and a natural diplomat being on the top of the list, but they were not useful in a militia focusing on guerrilla warfare against the British. Her place was keeping things organized on the civilized front of the family’s situation, and helping her mother manage everything. The swamps… well… those were the domain of her father and her siblings.
@avictimofthejazz (Ciara)
"If ya're here in Snow Island---" Elsie tries to swallow down the cutting edge of FEAR curling up her spine, "wh-- what's happened to Pond Bluff? A-- and -- mother? An-- And Murphy?" Then she pauses, her eyes ghosting over her elder sister as she reaches for a gun. "Ya didn't run into any trouble, did ya?"

Elsie finds herself bristling, her usual path into the swamps is now blocked by the person who haunts her every waking hour and his men. He is not at ALL what she had imagined, this menace and terrorizer of rebels. She turns to leave, but is corralled forwards towards him. "Think it wise ta be out here?" The Swamp Fox's daughter challenges, though she is clearly surrounded.
@unyieldingvalxr
Cocky, he is being awfully, cocky. Well, that is what a p.atriot would say. No, he is sure of himself. Which is more than can be said for the traitorous lass before him. Like father, like daughter, he supposed running the numbers in his head.
"I do," Tarleton replied, awful gentle, one could almost say... charismatic, and charming. Sure, Tarleton the butcher, he shall ride on horseback with that name... lie to his death, unfortunately. His calvary have been out here in the backwater for months, he will not lie, he is exasperated and tired. "But, I won't strike a lady, your father ought to suffer the hempen fever, but you... you are a lady, and you, unlike your father... have manners and dignity I shan't trample on, come along now, unless you'd rather keep up this charade."

A selection of illustrations from one of my (dead) grandpa’s old biology books. This one is “How to Know the Wild Flowers” by Mrs William Starr Dana, 1905. Illustrations by Marion Satterlee and Elsie Louise Shaw.
The black and white illustrations have MS, likely for Marion Satterlee. That suggests Elsie Louise Shaw probably did the color illustrations.

"Truth be told, I miss my trousers." She rumbles begrudgingly. Skirts felt so foreign now, there's almost too much freedom provided by flowy fabric. She grins at the idea of being a distraction so Mol could rob them blind with her remarkable talent of card playing. "Only one thing, with all them studying me--" She starts, "what if one a'em recognize me from the swamps? Then we'll both be sunk." Elsie sighs. "Who is that one officer that ya want me to run through again, if by chance, I happen to see 'em?"
"You look fine." Molly attempted to reassure as she tugged on the sleeves of Elsie's short gown trying to smooth out the wrinkles.
"Besides, the more the men look at you, the better chance I have of winning a hand or two." She offered a faint smile.
Gambling hadn't exactly been at the forefront of her mind when she'd agreed to scout in the city with Miss Marion, but it was the only way they could earn a bit of bribe money for the local authorities.

At Albany, New York, in 1827, Jesse Strang was hanged for shooting John Whipple with a rifle, but the victim's wife, Elsie Whipple, charged as an accessory, was speedily acquitted at the judge's instructions. She had had an affair with Jesse Strang and gave him the money to buy the gun, but the judge found no evidence that she was involved in the killing. In Harpswell, Maine, in 1863, a young man named Thorn was convicted of murdering Elisha Wilson in his bed. Mrs. Wilson, Thorn's lover and accomplice, was not prosecuted. And in Rochester, New York, in 1857, twenty-year-old Sarah Littles escaped murder charges in the death of her estranged husband, Charles, a man described by all as a drunken, blasphemous, unfaithful, syphilitic ne'er-do-well. Sarah, who had been walking out with a new gentleman friend, led her husband to the deserted cliff above the Genesee Falls where the murder took place: afterward she apparently helped push the body over the edge, falling herself and acquiring some telltale injuries in the process; and then she helped carry home and hide her husband's hat and the bloody hammer. With that kind of evidence against her (plus a probably false but alarming rumor of incest), the court couldn't just let her go. She was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to seven years in prison. Her brother, ex-convict Marion Stout, who had wielded the hammer, was hanged at Sing Sing, cursing her for "falsehood, contradiction and imbecility."
These cases were signs of things to come. The double standard of "justice," reinforced by the double standard of conventional morality, grew more entrenched as the century wore on. Radical feminists found themselves oddly aligned with conservative legal theoreticians in demanding equal justice, but their reasoned arguments were lost on high-minded and chivalrous patriarchs. Favoritism toward women under the criminal law was the trade-off men made for stripping women of rights under the civil law. Criminal Marion Stout might cry out against inequitable "justice" and find support from Susan B. Anthony, but the lawmakers—patriarchs all—seemed content with the bargain they had made. They rested comfortably in the knowledge that few men of the class that designed the criminal-justice system would ever fall under its wheels.
Always their question was the same: What motive could any woman have for killing her husband? The answer, for the typical nineteenth-century trial lawyer, was hard to come by, for he was doubly deluded. In the first place, the term "motive" was routinely taken to mean "cause." Inquiring into motive, lawyers sought the immediate event that had caused a woman to react by committing murder. Properly understood, however, a motive is not the cause of the homicide, but the cause for the sake of which the homicide is committed. In other words, a wife does not poison her husband because he is drunk, as lawyers would argue; she poisons her husband for the sake of a future life in which she will no longer have to contend with his habitual drunkenness and domination. Motive so conceived was particularly difficult for nineteenth-century lawyers to understand because of their equally mistaken notions about woman's nature; they did not take women to be reasoning, planning beings, able to act for the sake of some future state of affairs. That women might be capable of such self-determination and control was simply unthinkable. Assuming that women were passive creatures, lawyers usually looked for "motives" outside the woman's volition, in some other agency or force that caused her to behave as she did. They put the blame on menstrual tension, hysterical (ie., womb-centered) disease, insanity, or a male accomplice. And over and over again they blindly asked: What motive?
-Ann Jones, Women Who Kill
