Puppet Master 3: Toulon's Revenge...

The movie itself was epic. The quality, the puppet designs, and of course the main story was all gold. The only thing that bugged me the whole time I was watching was all of the background lore information. Most of it didn't match up to everything we have already got from the last 2 movies.

First, Leech Woman/Lady/Miss Leech..whatever..has Elsa Toulon's soul AKA Andre Toulon's wife. In part 2, she died. Andre did not care at all. Also, I just can't see somebody so kind and lighthearted as Elsa to be so gross and well yk--a scary little dude. I liked the concept of the green elixir to bring the puppets to life--without paranormal ghost possession or whatever. In newer films, especially the axis powers movies, it has been shown that to put someone's "soul" or whatever into the puppet you need their blood. You mix it into the elixir and bring them to life.

ALSO...in part 1 Puppet Master, it is shown Jester hasn't been awakened yet. Andre awakens him before he ends himself. So I don't really get Jester being possessed either. Also, whenever I see the epic one and only Blade on screen.. I don't wanna know that he's actually Dr. Hess.. like come on, man

Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge

This is a bit of a turning point, as in this one, we start getting the puppets being the good guys, and it's pretty unambiguous about that given they're up against the Nazis in a prequel. Here we learn how Andre Toulon (now portrayed by Guy Rolfe, the fourth actor playing him, if we count the young version in a flashback last time) came to the attention of the Nazis, who in trying to get his secrets killed his wife. Said wife, Elsa, is played by Sarah Douglas, so no wonder he's furious about this, they just killed Ursa from Superman II! We also learn here that each puppet is partially animated by the souls of those killed by the Nazis, including Elsa giving life to Leech Woman (Was there a pre-nup agreeing to that?). Given what I mentioned about Part 2, beginning to see why that causes a few continuity headaches, shouldn't he have been way more concerned with her fate there? Also, I was about originally going to ask in here "Whose soul is in Torch, the one he made in Part 2?", however, I forgot there's a Puppet Master comic series after this, and that does end up a big plot point.

Rescuing myself from this path of nitpicking and nerdery, this is another fun one, seeing members of the Third Reich getting picked off by pint-sized terrors is wonderfully cathartic. This one introduces perhaps my favourite of the Puppets, Six-Shooter. He's a very fun design, the gimmick of the tiny guns is great, and I love his laugh (which I'm pretty sure is based off Dwight Frye from Dracula). He's probably the one that shows the most personality in enjoying what he does. Many hold this up as the high water mark of the series, and I think I'll do so too; again, none of these films are exactly high art, or even conventionally good, but you have to love the idea of sentient marionettes taking down the Fuhrer's finest! Mind, where do you from there? Taking down an even more pure evil of course...

Uh oh!!!!! Info-dumping time!!!!!!!!!

Blade is the leader of the group. His outfit is reminiscent of a noir detective, with a black trench coat and a matching trilby. His face is porcelain white, reused from an older puppet of Toulon's. Instead of hands, he's equipped with a hook and blade. His hair is white, and has hidden bullets for eyea. Though most of the puppets cannot talk, Blade's personality can be shown through his actions - he's very friendly, and easily gets along with and leads his fellow puppets. Though he's not one to shy away from bloodshed, he can be easily startled, especially by humans. He also has his own movie spin off coming up soon!

Torch is, technically, the "baby" of the group, and the most recent addition to the puppets. He's made out of metal, and his attire is based off an old military outfit. Instead of a right hand, he has a flamethrower. He was made with the soul of Erich Toulon, the son of Andre and Elsa Toulon, but it is unknown if he retains any personality or memories of Erich's. Torch is very quick to anger, and has a very "fiery" personality. He's quick to anger, aggression, and hostility. Though, he does seem to respect his fellow puppets - especially Blade, who is shown to hold Torch back and calm his anger. He's also shown to be brought to a murderous rage when Leech Woman, the puppet containing his mother's soul, is hurt.

Tunneler is a puppet with doe-like black eyes, and styled in an old possibly WWII-style uniform. He has a drill atop his head, as per his namesake. Tunneler appears to usually be very docile and appears to work better in a team than alone. When he's alone, he often can be prone to capture. His most powerful asset is his drill, and in other ways is very weak and lithe.

Pinhead is definitely the brawn of the group - much more brute force than brains, but has a good heart to make up for it! Pinhead is characterized by his muted red sweater and fingerless gloves. Another trait of note is that he only has one good eye, and his bald, pin-shaped head. He's definitely the stingest of the puppets, able to punch and injure grown adults quite well - for a puppet, that is. He's shown to be quite caring and good-humored - celebrating (via laughing and doing a little dance) when Jester lands a hit to an enemy or cleaning off Tunneler's blood soaked drill with a napkin

Jester, while not the youngest, is more commonly treated as the "baby" of the group in spite of Torch and Blade being younger. He's dressed up in a flashy court jester-like outfit, fit with a purple jester's hat. He also has multiple faces which he can spin around and slect based on his mood (happy, sad, mad, shocked, etc.) Jester is the most pacifist out of the bunch, with only three kills to his name. He's often portrayed as fun-loving and innocent, or at least less mature or weaker than the other puppets.

Six-Shooter is based off American cowboys, and was used in Toulon's plays as the "American savior" come to defeat the nazis. Despite his dastardly looking smile, Six Shooter is a good puppet all around, not afraid to shoot down bad guys to protect the ones he cares about or for people in need. He's often depicted as a bit reckless and a bit of a daredevil, so to speak. He doesn't soeak, but he DOES laugh - which points to him being fun-loving and not as serious as the other puppets. And, as per his namesake, he has six arms, perfect for weilding his six guns, all filled with actual bullets. It should also be mentioned that he doesn't shy away from showing off or doing some sharp-shooting tricks!

Leech Woman is inhabited by the soul of Elsa Toulon, the late wife of Andre Toulon. She was shot and killed by nazis, and was brought back to life by her husband. She seems to retain her memories of her padt life, possibly because of the short time between her death and the transfer of her soul. She takes the form of a woman, a doll actually based off her likeness, in a dress. She's armed with a knife and with an army of leeches at her disposal. She seens retain much of her personality from her life before - calm and good-natured, willing to fight for what she sees as right and what she believes in, with a strong love for her husband and her fellow puppets. She can also be a bit flirty, and loves to dress up in the clothes Andre made specifically for her

Andre Toulon, aka, Decapitron, Andre grew up in France with a dream of becoming a puppeteer. However, for unknown reasons, he went on to study medicine and teach at university. However, this is not before he was a doctor during the war. Healing inhured soldiers showed him the horrors of war, and he was forever scared by the bloodshed it caused. After teaching for a few years, he quit his job to pursure his lifelong dream - puppeteering. He traveled all of the world performing shows before he and Elsa encountered Afzel, who taught them the secret of eternal life and brought their own puppets to life. After World War II began, Andre and Elsa traveled to Europe to produce shows that fought against that nazi party and their teachings. Ultimatrly, both Andre and Elsa were killed. However, just as Elsa was brought back to life, so was Andre, in the form of the Puppet "Decapitron."

There's more characters and more to the story overall, but basically the jist of it!!!

blade and mephisto have the same head, it was just repurposed for blade like the horns were taken off but despite that its the same head

torch has the soul of a pig (which belonged to that farmer couple), which is very odd now that he has the sentience of a human

the puppets have traits and remnants of memories (like feelings based on past experiences) from their human soul, but theyre no longer that person the soul belonged to

decapitron isn’t exactly a puppet with a soul in it like the others, but a body that ghosts can use, like toulon was possessing that doll

anyways the inn is totally haunted, maybe even a demon hanging around there who knows but i bet it has a history that would make it haunted

jester and six are the most talkative, making noises all the time on purpose, while blade is the noisiest, just making involuntary noises whenever he does stuff (like that beginning scene in 1, hes very noisy)

six is the one who’s been around the longest, though he wasnt woken up again until after 2

leech survived the fire but was badly burnt, so she went back to the (empty) inn and woke up six using some formula left over, but only them and broken tunneler were left so they worked on fixing him

the others were taken by camille who didnt want to be there when the cops inevitably showed up, somehow they get back idk

leech had gotten some minor fixes but its only after 5 that she was properly repaired by rick and susie

like leech, jesters design was based on his human soul, despite the clothes its very accurate to what he looked like

tunnelers eyelids can move but theyre the only part of his face that can

torch is very confused about what is going on hes just like a day old and has strong fire powers and he used to be a pig and now hes a little man hes trying to process all that give him some time

he also looks up to blade like an older brother

Torch sure is one nasty puppet, a shame he only appeared in two films in the regular series and in Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. Have you ever the Puppet Master comic book series? They reveal who was Torch as a human.

I adore what Shawn did with Torch as a character in the Puppet Master comic series. It contextualizes so much about why that puppet is the way he is. On one level, he’s a lasting ramification of the things Toulon did when he was undead and insane in Puppet Master II. Toulon got to move on from that and seemed to be forgiven by the others, but Torch was not someone who he would have made into a puppet had he been in his right mind and Torch has to live with the fact that he’s kind of the only one of these puppets who doesn’t want to be there. They all had a choice in the matter and he didn’t. 

Plus, so much of his mean-spirited attitude, his scene with the kid in PM 2, his introduction right after Leech Woman getting burnt and having to essentially lose his mother for a second time, all of that stuff makes sense if he’s Andre and Elsa’s child. 

I’ve got a whole chapter devoted to the comics in the book I’m writing on the franchise (two, actually, one on the 1990 comics and one on the recent comics) and I’m also making an effort to get to the bottom of why Torch was in Puppet Master 5 but not Puppet Master 4 when those movies were shot at the same time.
