Wonderful Colorful - The Beauty & Fashion set that got me published!

Wonderful Colorful

A few months ago, at the end of July, I shot with my model friend Yesica Camacho and my girlfriend/makeup artist. We decided to try and aim for one of the biggest social media magazines, Ellements Magazine. It was really exciting because she got some new make up, I learned how to skin retouch and have been practicing enough to finally feel confident in doing it on other people other than my girlfriend. I also had recently got a great deal on a Godox AD600BM, with a softbox modifier. So I was set for my first studio beauty shoot, except for everything went wrong that could go wrong… Let me tell you.

So I we got started at about noon, and the first look took absolutely forever to get right. The make up took a long time to get right, the light was not wanting to work sometimes. I could not get the lighting the way I wanted. It was very frustrating because I had my vision, but I just could not get it to look right. Yesica this whole time has such a positive attitude and dancing around being silly , and really just uplifting the mood. As soon as I noticed her being herself, I definitely got some spark to light up the creativity juices in my brain. I sometimes forget to let the model be themselves. When you try too hard to pose someone, you quickly start to forget that photography is not about the perfect pose, it’s about the perfect angle to make someone look good. So Yesica kept doing her, and I would stop her and then slowly re position her for the vision I have. If it weren’t for her great attitude, I don’t think I would have even got close to any of the shots I got. Yesica did the make up for the first few looks, and we got the first few looks done around 7 PM. Yea, don’t ask me why it took so long, but it kept taking forever. We needed help so we could get a full editorial shot.

My make up artist and girlfriend Maddie, came by later on to try some looks on Yesica and to help us in our time crunch. She did an excellent job with the rest of the looks. The theme for Septembers issue was “Pop Art & Color”, I believe my team and I did a pretty good job this time around. However, we all look back on this day, and have learned from our mistakes. We are planning to do this again really soon. So stay on the look out for that.

I did also want to speak about my thoughts about online magazines. I had fun trying to submit to something and sort of compete with other photographers to get on this magazine. But I realized really quickly that these magazines aren’t picking the best photographers to be in their magazines. They are picking the photographers that can probably get the most people to buy their magazine, which makes sense in a business point, but it makes no sense in the community aspect. What I mean is, I (the photographer) have to submit to the magazine, wait a month or so before I can release any of the images in case I get chosen, If chosen, I don’t get a free copy of the magazine. I tell all of my friends and family to support me and the fact I got published, except I don’t make any money off of anyone buying the magazine. All I get is the “exposure”. So all of this, just to say I was in a magazine, that doesn’t make it competitive to be in? Not worth my time, honestly the last time I submit to an online magazine.

I do however, want to make my own magazine that is competitive, that has useful and helpful information. I want to make a magazine everyone can relate to… So stay tuned… Below is the full “Wonderful Colorful” Set!
