Personal Graded Unit: Inspirational Photographers

For this Graded Unit, I have looked at several artists who have had experience in both location fashion photography and Clean White portraits. Here are a few of the artists I researched more into and their images:

Andrew Atwell

Andrew Atwell is a Chicago-based photographer, who gave up practicing law to pursue his dream passion to become a film photographer, working for various production companies when he moved out to Los Angeles. Atwell eventually returned to the Midwest to practice fashion and editorial photography and has shoot several models and created beautiful images and portraits.

A lot of Atwell’s images take place in stable environments such as; deserts, lofts, cities and studio-based controlled environments. The images seem to use different blending mode with a colour lock-up to make the images appear more editorial, artificially lit and colourful, using digital editorials via Photoshop.

Atwell uses more than just one size of framing, not only does he capture full figures and headshots, he will also capture a lot more in frame. He will also take images of the subject’s face at full frame, up-close shot, and he also likes to take portraits of full top half of the body, head and shoulders with arms coming in off screen.

His images will have the model’s face in frame the whole time, full frame or cropped. His subjects often look right into the camera whether they are turned away or facing the camera. The colours of fashion his subjects wear is a mixture of crisp white colours, summer red and orange colours, and denim and leather style of jackets. His choice of mixed colours brings more life and light into the frame, as opposed to being shot in natural lit environments with dark shadow seeping off-screen.

Jörg Friedrich

Jörg Friedrich is a German commercial and a location photographer. He is also a portraits and wedding photographer, outdoors, on location and studio portraiture. He has a few photography studios near his hometown of Frankfurt and likes to travel and capture fashion-style portraits around Germany during the summertime.

Friedrich likes to capture his images in a cinematic style of shooting. A lot of Friedrich’s portraits have the same amount of framing with the subject’s full figure in frame, whether it’s in the middle or on the side of the frame.

Most of his location portraits captured are usually women wearing often black, white, and red vibrant colours of clothing in city street locations with the use of natural light and artificial light, both from source speedlight devices and light from buildings in the image’s background.

Many of Friedrich’s images appear to have the same time-of-day settings between morning, noon and night shots. A lot of his portraits will be captured during a dusky sunset setting, a night with city lights, or spring / summertime lit days.

Friedrich’s portraits are all combined with a mixture of vibrant editorial colours and Black & White conversions. His colour images use colour masks, photo filters and channel mixers due to the look of colour embedded in the images.

Daria Koso

Daria Koso is an American photographer based in Miami, whose work is mainly focused in the fashion and editorial photographic industry, with her work displayed in advertising campaigns and lookbooks. She has captured images for many magazine publications such as; Playboy, InStyle, Ellements, Miami Vibes and Scorpio Jin.

Daria also plans and books fashion shoots, capturing multiple fashion-inspired portraits, and she shoots these images with a basis of natural sunlight and flash speed lighting effects. A lot of her fashion shoots whether its studio or location-based capture feminine beauty with women’s summer dresses, lingerie, and beachwear. A lot of her portrait settings are captured and created in hot summer-set environments on location such as; deserts, sandy beaches, mounted areas and studios.

She also shoots professional nude portraits of women, mainly in studio. Her images are a mixture of colour and Black & White conversion portraits with strong light and bold black shadowing. She has captured location female nudes or partial nudes for Playboy Magazine.

Daria often travels to New York and Los Angeles to shoot her images on location, she is also a professional image retoucher when it comes to optimising her images. The images appear to be shot in secluded areas as the subject/s in frame are alone in the given location or set.

Her capture of the female face is fantastic because all of her portrait from up-close or in distance will feature the subject’s face in frame, whether it’s the just the head or full body.
