The Nightingale Family-DC x DP prompt
(Shameless Addams family inspired prompt)
News travels fast in Gotham, especially in affluent circles. A new family has arrived in the city, old money at that. They had taken up residents in the old mansion overlooking the Historic Gotham Graveyard.
The Nightingales had a way of letting their presence be known. They were rarely seen in public. The eldest Jasmine Nightingale however had made waves working at the Gotham Asylum as a psychologist. She was often escorted by her younger brother Dan Nightingale. The public really started talking when Jazz was seen talking with Harley Quinn.
There were two children that lived in the Nightingale manor. They were elusive to say the least as the family didn't attend the parties of Gotham.
It wasn't until Damian Wayne got an invite from his classmate Danielle to visit their manor that someone saw the lives of Nightingales. This invite had been received after Damian carefully befriended the youngest Nightingale to investigate their connections.
That's how the Waynes ended up at a dinner party.
The manor was bleak to say the least and that's saying something in Gotham. The buildingbwas made from black stones and gargoyles perched on the roof. The garden was wilted and full of thrones that crept up the walls.
Bruce felt a sense of Deja vu as he approached the door and rang the bell. Tower bells rang out as the face of Jasmine Nightingale appeared. She was dressed in black dress pants and blazer. Her lips were painted to match. Her red hair had a striking white streak through it which had become a fashion trend since the family's arrival to girls wanting to seem mysterious.
"Good Evening. It is so nice to meet the infamous Waynes." She shook Bruce's hand. Behind her, the sounds of clanking metal was heard. "That is just my younger siblings playing. You don't you boys join while I talk to your father.
Despite only being a fresh-faced 20 year old Jazz carried herself like a confident adult. A certified genius in psychology who graduated early she also handled the inmates at the Asylum well enough that escapes are at an all time low.
"She's got it all" was what Harley said.
Bruce's admiration of the young lady was only matched by his suspicion. The house the Nightingales lived y had once belonged to the Al Ghouls. There was no telling yet if there was a connection.
He took a seat in the living room with Jazz tea already prepared. She poured two cups of black tea. Not black as in the type of tea but the color of the drink. Bruce cautiously sniffed the black liquid, it smelled earthy and acidic. Poison.
"Do you like it? I made it myself. I added the belladonna myself. It has a sweet taste so you don't need sugar. The kids have sweet tooths but we avoid added sugars. They love nightshade." She smiled drinking.
Bruce put the cup down. So they drink poison at a young age. They must be part of The League of Assassins. But why are they here?
"If you don't mind me asking. Why did you move to Gotham? Your parents-" Jazz put a hand up as she finished her cup.
"Mr. Wayne I'm sure you are no stranger to parents leaving before their time nor the concept that not all parents deserve children. Now I can't confirm or deny if that is the case for use but you can understand that it's a private matter." Jazz said sternly.
That wasn't an answer.
Upstairs Danny and Danielle played with Elle's new toys. Swords from Dan's trip to Portugal. He even sharpened them. They were currently tearing through the mansion.
Tim and Damian caught them while Danny had successfully pinned Elle to the ground.
"Dami! Help!" Elle yelled catching Danny off guard as Damian tackled Danny to the ground.
"Alright, alright. You can go next." Danny rolling Damian off him and passing him the sword. "Im taking a break."
Danny loved playing with his little sister but baby games are tiring.
"They let you play with swords," Tim exclaimed. This wasn't something he expected, sure it was normal for Damian but Damian is weird and was raised by assassins. Damian didn't do it for fun, it was training.
Damian and Danielle ran off while fencing.
"You must be one of the Waynes. Elle has been excited to have your brother over." Danny said politely if not a bit dismissive.
"Eh, yeah. Your sister said we should join you." Tim said a bit awkward. " You have another brother right?"
"Oh, yeah. He travels alot but he's relaxing right now. He's probably swimming." Danny shrugged.
Tim had heard of Danny. They went to the same school but Danny was part of a program that allowed him to come to school when he felt like it. The program is for young engineers who want to work for Wayne Industries. He mostly worked on small experimental projects. So far Danny's superconductor tech was revolutionary but impossible to replicate. Danny somehow managed to make a more effective coolant than anything they had created in the lab.
"You have a pool?" Tim knew that the mansion didn't have a pool.
"Of water? No." Danny shrugged but gave no further answer.
"I see, so what do you do?" Tim tried to sound normal like he was talking to his friends and not someone he was trying to probe.
"Anything, everything. I was going to recalibrate my telescope but I have a laser to test." Danny walked off expecting Tim to follow.
Testing was just cut a bunch of things in half. Tim got some great info on making an explosive ice canister and foam bombs. Tim made sure to get his number to hire him to make some gear for him.
The Nightingale kids were absolutely lawless. They destroyed everything in their path.
Elle had dragged Damian to her room to show off her toys. She used to travel with Dan until she started school. She picked up a bunch of items. Cult artifacts, shrunken heads, voodoo dolls, cursed puppets, knives, swords, and the homemade taxidermy Elle made from roadkill. She also had a pet dodo bird named Ernesto who had a bed next to her bed. Ernesto took a liking to Damian and sat on his head. The way he shows his affection
Soon enough Dan came upstairs to check on Elle and Danny.
"You kids, need to get ready for dinner. Sharpen your nails and teeth." He said before going back to the kitchen.
"What does that mean?" Damian asked.
"You don't sharpen your nails. Well good luck at dinner." Elle said bemused.
Dinner was...horrifying. Watching the family chat happily as they ripped apart the moving food as it came to life. Damian was actually excited as he skewered the cheese and broccoli casserole that screamed at him.
"Father, why can't we do this at our home?" He asked.

Weekend !

MAGAZINES TRANSLATION PROJECT
Hi Swifties, I need your help! There are a few exclusive interviews that Taylor did with non English-speaking magazines that need to be translated, and I don't really trust Google Translate. I'm doing this for the interview archive, but of course you'd be credited. If you don't speak any of these languages, please consider reblogging this post or sending it to the people you know speak these languages! 🙏🏻
Here's some of the languages that I need: French, German, Japanese, Portuguese. I speak German so technically it's not as urgent, however, I don't have much time lately, so if you want to translate from German, go for it. Please note that there may not be an interview in some links. I have no idea.
If you know some other magazines that are not present in this list, feel free to send them in.
Below the cut the links with the magazines scans divided by languages.

Automne 1923 - Champs-les-Sims
4/7

Hi maia i just wanted to thank you for genderqueer i found it the other day in my library and translated into my language no less! There isn't a lot of progressive talk about trans issues in Poland and the translation of your book was the first book about nonbinary person in my language that i think i've ever seen. I never thought i would ever get to read it because the shipping prices are so high so i genuinely cried while i saw it on the shelf. I don't know how involved you are in translation process but it was such a well done job and the note the translators wrote at the beginning tought me more about nonbinary culture in my country than i've ever hoped i would get to know. Also I was wondering do you consult with translators what set of pronouns to use in other languages? I imagine it's a hard decision when the gender neutral pronouns don't have a direct counterpart. Sorry for rambling and thank you once again for this amazing book and for sharing your story <3
Thank you so much for this message! I am so glad you were able to find a Polish version! Polish and Czech were some of the very first foreign translations we sold, and I remember being very surprised, but very happy, because it was a few years ago when I was starting to hear about a rising wave of conservative politics in Poland. But a publisher took a chance on it and I'm very grateful <3
Yes, I generally consult on every single translation, for exactly the reason you pointed out: pronouns are different in every language! Some languages already have a widely used gender neutral pronoun set. Some languages have one that's new, but being developed by trans and nonbinary people today (like elle in Spanish). Some languages don't have any gendered pronouns to begin with! Because the English edition contains two different nonbinary pronoun sets (they/them/theirs and e/em/eir) we also have to decide how to distinguish between the two. What I always tell the translation team is: I would rather the translation be useful than faithful. I don't want to try and replicate the English. I want the book to demonstrate a pronoun set that could be practically used in the language it's being read in.
Generally, the publisher hires a professional translator and then often a second person who is trans or nonbinary to read over the translation and to write a forward, such as the Polish edition has. I believe the French edition has a forward as well. The only other language aside from English I can read halfway decently is Spanish, so I am always really glad to hear from someone who has read any of the other versions saying it was well done!
And for anyone else interested in Gender Queer in other languages, currently it has been released in Spanish, Polish, Czech, French, Italian, and Dutch with Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), German, Japanese, and Korean forthcoming.

L'olivier blanc. Known as Olea europaea var. leucocarpa, has been around for centuries and is an ancient variety of olive trees, also known as leucolea (meaning white olive tree). The natural habitat of the white olive tree can be found in its natural habitat in Greece, "Magna Graecia". It is also present in southern parts of Italy, in Tuscany, and especially in Calabria, as well as in some areas along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea in North Africa, Portugal, Malta, and the west to the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean.

Gilt leather shoes in 16th c. Ireland
Drawing of a 16th c. Irish shoe by A. T. Lucas over a gilt leather wall hanging from the National Museum Machado de Castro in Portugal
In his 1518 description of Irish clothing, Laurent Vital says the following about shoes worn by Irish women and girls:
They wear little shoes with single soles, very pretty and cute, finely worked on top with other colors of leather and sometimes adorned with gilt leather, as if they were gilded, like the shoes which were bought for children at fairs in past times. (translation by Dorothy Convery, edited by me)
In this post, I discuss what Laurent Vital meant by gilt leather and how it might have been used in 16th c. Irish shoes.
Sadly, we do not have any surviving examples of gilt leather shoes from medieval or early modern Ireland. This is unsurprising, because gilt leather is a fragile material which can be destroyed by excessive moisture, (Gilt Leather Society 2019) and most surviving Irish shoes have been found in damp locations like bogs, crannogs, and wells (Lucas 1956, Miller 1991, Nicholl 2023).
As Vital points out, although medieval doretz de cuyr or gilt leather looks like gilding, it is not really gold. Gilt leather was made from carefully prepared leather that was sealed with rabbit-skin glue and then had silver foil placed on top of it. The foil was then painted with a yellow varnish, giving it its golden appearance (Pereira 2012). Gilt leather could be stamped with patterns or painted with designs.
Painted gilt leather on a writing box belonging to King Henry VIII, made circa 1525 Victoria and Albert Museum collection
Learning what gilt leather actually was left me puzzled as to how the Irish made shoes out of it. Early 16th c. Irish shoes were largely made using a turnshoe or turn-welt construction. These methods involve sewing the shoe together inside out and then turning it right side out. In order to turn successfully, the shoe leather needs to be thin and flexible. Turnshoes are typically soaked in water to soften them before they are turned (Miller 1991, Nicholl 2023). I would expect that the layers of rabbit-skin glue and varnish in gilt leather would make the leather too stiff to turn. Also, as previously noted, being soaked with water is bad for gilt leather.
Although there are no surviving Irish examples of gilt leather shoes, there are a few continental European examples of episcopal sandals from the 12-13th centuries which appear to be embellished with gilt leather.
All of these shoes have a base layer of plain leather; the gilt leather is an applique which is glued or stitched on top. This method of construction is consistent with Vital's description that Irish shoes were estainnet i.e. adorned or plated*, with gilt leather. This method also explains how it was possible for Irish shoemakers to make shoes with gilt leather. Turnshoes of plain leather could be appliqued with gilt after they were turned right side out.
*estainnet: modern French étamer: to tin plate or to plate with metal
Irish shoemakers probably used gilt leather that was imported from Spain. During the Middle Ages, gilt leather was made in Spain and Portugal. It was not made elsewhere in Europe until the 17th century. (Pereira 2012). 16th c. Irish merchants imported luxury goods like silk and wine from Spain (Flavin 2011).
Neither Vital's account nor period illustrations give us any idea what kind of designs these Irish gilt shoes had on them. Rinceaux or scrolling foliage motifs like those on the sides of the 16th c. St. Brigid's shoe shrine are a likely option.
Further reading: Robert Gresh of the group Wilde Irish has written an interesting article on evidence for the use of gilt leather in 16th c. Irish armor. Download here
