Walter Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552-1618 CE) was an English courtier, soldier, mariner, explorer, and historian. A one-time favourite of his queen, Elizabeth I of England (r. 1558-1603 CE), Raleigh organised three expeditions to form a colony on the coast of North America in the 1580s CE. The colony was abandoned but the expeditions were notable for introducing tobacco and the potato to England. Unsuccessful at colonisation and falling out with his queen when he married one of her ladies-in-waiting, Raleigh turned instead to finding El Dorado, the fabled golden city of South America. Once more, success was elusive. Back in England, the adventurer was accused of treason by King James I of England (r. 1603-1625 CE) and imprisoned in the Tower of London for 13 years. Writing poetry and an important work of history, the beached mariner was improbably freed in 1616 CE to explore one last time South America. This final expedition was another failure and led once again to imprisonment. Raleigh was executed in the Tower in 1618 CE.
Early Life
Walter Raleigh (or Ralegh as he himself preferred) was born c. 1552 CE in Devon, the son of a member of the local gentry. Educated at Oxford University, Walter volunteered to serve in France to assist the Huguenots there against Catholic oppression. Moving on to Ireland in the mid-1570s CE and establishing a plantation there, Walter was a young captain involved in putting down the Irish rebellions against English colonialism. Raleigh hardly covered himself in glory, though, when he participated in the massacre of 600 surrendered Italian troops at Smerwick in 1580 CE.
From 1581 CE Raleigh arrived at court and his family connection to Elizabeth I's childhood nurse was a helpful point of introduction to his monarch. He made a positive impression with his height, good looks and quick wit. Although 20 years her junior, Raleigh's charm and poetry soon attracted the good favour of his queen. Polite and chivalrous - at least in outward form, Raleigh's eccentricity is illustrated by the likely fictional story that he once lay down his cloak upon a puddle so that the queen need not get her feet wet. Raleigh's good relationship with Elizabeth was helped by his position as captain of the Yeoman Guard which gave him more access to his queen than most. The relationship thus had practical and often lucrative consequences. Over time, Raleigh accumulated large estates in the southwest, Midlands and Ireland which went along with his political influence as a Member of Parliament for Devon and Cornwall. He was given royal monopolies for tin and playing cards, and licences for taverns for 30 years. Rich and proud of showing it, critics once quipped that Raleigh's jewelled shoes alone cost a ridiculous £6,000. The pinnacle came when he was knighted in 1585 CE. All this social progress came despite the rumour Raleigh was said to have denied the immortality of the soul and questioned Elizabeth's foreign policy as not aggressive enough; Raleigh once joked, "Her Majesty did all by halves" (Guy, 289). Perhaps, for this very reason, Raleigh was never admitted to the Privy Council, England's executive seat of government.

THOMAS SEYMOUR, 1ST BARON SEYMOUR OF SUDELEY
c.1508-1549
Thomas Seymour was the brother of Queen Jane Seymour the third wife of King Henry VIII of England and the uncle of King Edward VI.
Seymour was said to have been attractive and a favourite to the ladies at court. When Henry VIII died, Seymour married the king’s wealthy widow Catherine Parr in 1547.
Parr was living with Lady Jane Grey, 11, and Princess Elizabeth, 14, when Seymour, 40, started preying on Elizabeth. He would flirt with her, tickle her, slap her bum and go into her bedroom when she was in bed. Her governess didn’t approve of his beheavior and the situation got so dire that Elizabeth had to wear clothing to bed so he won’t find her in her bedwear. Parr who was so in love with Seymour, she did very little to stop him. At one point Parr held Elizabeth down whilst Seymour cut the princesses black gown ‘into a thousand pieces.’ When Parr was pregnant in 1548 she had to send Elizabeth away due her husband’s activities with the young teenager. Parr gave birth to a daughter Mary and Parr died not long after and all her wealth went to him. After her death, Thomas pursued Elizabeth and wanted to marry her, Elizabeth wisely avoided him.
His brother Edward was the Lord Protector to the young king Edward VI. Seymour wanted the control and favour of the king, and became so irratic that in January 1549 he broke into King Edward’s apartments. The king’s spaniel woke up and started barking and Seymour panicked and shot and killed it. One of the king’s gentlemen who slept in the king’s chamber awoke and screamed out, ‘Help! Murder!’, Seymour was arrested and sent to the Tower of London. Seymour was executed on 20 March 1549 on Tower Hill and his property was seized by the Royal Crown. His daughter Mary died before she reached adulthood.

FIRE OVER ENGLAND (1937)

FIRE OVER ENGLAND
1937
Fire Over England is a historic film directed by William K. Howard and written by Clemence Dane, based on the novel by AEW Mason (1936). The film is set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I during English victory over the Spanish Armada.
The film stars Flora Robson as Queen Elizabeth I, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, and James Mason. This was the first time Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh appeared together on screen (they were a couple in real life). Leigh’s performance in this film helped convince David O. Selznick to cast her as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939).
The original title of the film was ‘Glorianna’, and was filmed at Denham Studios in England. They used a large water tank to film the Spanish Armada scene using model ships.
This was the first British film to premier in Los Angeles, the film gained positive reviews initially, however the film lacked historical accuracy. Today the film doesn’t rate as well with modern audiences this could be largely due to it being historical fiction as well as using many characters that didn’t exist in real life.

ELIZABETH R (1971)
ELIZABETH R
1971
Elizabeth R is a historic television 6-part series which stars Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I of England. It was filmed at Penshurst Place and Chiddingstone, Kent. The TV series begins in 1549, with Princess Elizabeth’s ascent to the throne and ends with her death in 1603. It was so popular when it was first broadcast that they had to replay it immediately afterwards due to audience demand. The series was created after the success of the TV series the ‘Six Wives of Henry VIII’ (1970). Glenda Jackson played Elizabeth I once again for the Mary Queen of Scots (1971). Costume designer Elizabeth Waller recreated many of Elizabeth’s actual gowns, adapting them from her portraits. The dresses went on display at Hampton Court Palace.

On This Day In History . 15th January 1559 . 👑 Elizabeth I was crowned Queen of England
◼ After the new Queen had sworn the oath & been anointed, she could sit in St Edward’s Chair & receive the sword, armils, mantle, ring & sceptre, & be crowned. She was crowned with three different crowns, one after the other, with fanfares marking each crowning. . ◼ Elizabeth was then dressed in gold right down to her shoes, & with the sceptre in one hand & orb in the other, she processed onto the stage where she sat in the throne. There, her people greeted her & Oglethorpe, & the Lords Spiritual & Temporal paid homage to their new queen by kneeling at her feet & kissing her cheek. . ◼ The coronation pardon was read, & this was followed by the coronation mass, which included the Epistle & the Gospel being read out in both Latin & English. Elizabeth then kissed the Bible. Oglethorpe, defied his new queen by elevating the host, at which point Elizabeth withdrew to change into her purple robes. . ◼ The Queen then processed from the Abbey, through Old Palace Yard & back to Westminster Hall to enjoy her coronation banquet. Elizabeth was now the official queen, & her coronation & accession had been a huge success. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #TheYear1559 #Thisdayinhistory #ElizabethI #QueenElizabethI #HouseofTudor #TheTudors #Tudor #TudorDynasty #History #RoyaltyinArt #TheVirginQueen #QueenofEngland #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #D15Jan #ElizabethIofengland #onthisday #instahistory #royalhistory #westminsterabbey #Thequeen #RoyalFamily #Historyfacts #Tudors #tudorhistory (at Westminster, London) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7W-W7hAUJV/?igshid=6sdbkswejzz8

On This Day In History . 17 November 1558 . Queen Elizabeth I's accession . . 👑 Elizabeth became queen at the age of 25, & declared her intentions to her Council & other peers who had come to Hatfield to swear allegiance. The speech contains the first record of her adoption of the medieval political theology of the sovereign's "two bodies": the body natural & the body politic: . 'My lords, the law of nature moves me to sorrow for my sister; the burden that is fallen upon me makes me amazed, & yet, considering I am God's creature, ordained to obey His appointment, I will thereto yield, desiring from the bottom of my heart that I may have assistance of His grace to be the minister of His heavenly will in this office now committed to me. & as I am but one body naturally considered, though by His permission a body politic to govern, so shall I desire you all ... to be assistant to me, that I with my ruling & you with your service may make a good account to Almighty God & leave some comfort to our posterity on earth. I mean to direct all my actions by good advice & counsel'. . 👑 As her triumphal progress wound through the city on the eve of the coronation ceremony, she was welcomed wholeheartedly by the citizens & greeted by orations & pageants, most with a strong Protestant flavour. Elizabeth's open & gracious responses endeared her to the spectators, who were "wonderfully ravished". . 👑 The following day, 15 January 1559, Elizabeth was crowned & anointed by Owen Oglethorpe, the Catholic bishop of Carlisle, in Westminster Abbey. She was then presented for the people's acceptance, amidst a deafening noise of organs, fifes, trumpets, drums, & bells. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1558 #D17Nov #ElizabethI #QueenofEngland #ElizabethIofEngland #HouseofTudor #Hatfieldhouse #Monarch #Queen #Tudor #Tudors #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #OnThisDay #RoyalHistory #historyfacts #historic #TheTudors #OnThisDay #virginqueen #EnglishHistory (at United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4-h_-kgxVF/?igshid=6uqprcqlgyad
